The Patriots dropped their season opener 20-7 at the Miami Dolphins Sunday. New England was held off the board except for a 3rd-quarter touchdown by RB Ty Montgomery on a 6-yard pass.

QB Mac Jones was 21-for-30 passing for 213 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He dealt with a back injury but remained in the game. WR Jakobi Meyers led all pass-catchers with 55 yards on 4 receptions (6 targets) as RB Damien Harris paced the backfield with 48 yards on 9 carries.

The post-Ben Roethlisberger era began in earnest for the Steelers as they picked up a 23-20 overtime victory over the division-rival Cincinnati Bengals to start their season Sunday.

QB Mitch Trubisky was 21-for-38 for 194 yards and 1 TD; 75 of those yards went to TE Pat Freiermuth. Star RB Najee Harris struggled to get things going as he picked up just 23 yards on 11 carries and only added 3 yards on 2 receptions — although he did catch Trubisky’s lone TD pass. Harris left the game with a foot injury and did not return, although early suggestions are that it may not be serious. Harris was spotted in a walking boot boarding the team bus.

The Steelers fear they lost LB T.J. Watt, who left in the 4th quarter, to a torn pectoral muscle. Watt finished with 22 1/2 sacks in 2021 and would leave a major hole on the defensive side of the ball for Pittsburgh.

Patriots vs. Steelers head-to-head

The Patriots have a slight 17-16 edge in the all-time series, including a 4-1 mark in the postseason. New England has won 6 of the last 7 meetings, with the most recent matchup coming in 2019 — that’s notably before the Jones era began for the visitors and before the Roethlisberger era ended for the home team.

New England has only covered the spread in 1 of its last 7 games dating back to last season.
