There has never been a talent issue in Austin. It has more been what former coaches have done with the top talent they accrued.
For Steve Sarkisian, he has already shown in a small dose that he can maximize players, and we may see a perfect example of that in 2023. The Longhorns are the favorites to win the Big 12, and are viewed by some as being legitimate College Football Playoff contenders.
On top of their possible on-field success, they are also viewed as having a wealth of potential 2024 NFL draft picks.
“There’s nine, 10 players that you look at this year who are legitimate NFL draft prospects,” Miller told Inside Texas’ Bobby Burton on On Texas Football. “That hasn’t been the case for a long time at Texas.”
He highlighted Quinn Ewers and Xavier Worthy, while also showing love to Ja’Tavion Sanders who exploded this past season. If the Longhorns have a draft as successful as they are projected to, a lot of streaks will end.
According to On3, Texas has had five players drafted just three times since 2012. Until Bijan Robinson was taken in the first round this year, they hadn’t had a first rounder in seven drafts. If Ewers performs as expected, he would be the first Texas quarterback to go in the first round since Vince Young did back in 2006.
Texas fans continue to have more reasons to be excited about what could be the best season since 2009.
