On the road at Kansas State is a trap game
Before facing off against Oklahoma in the annual Red River Shootout, Texas faces Kansas State on the road in a possible trap game. The Longhorns are not new to playing on the road the week before the RRSO, as they traveled to Morgantown in 2019. Any game before a rivalry matchup is cause for concern as the team may be looking ahead, but it is extra dangerous with Kansas State.
The Wildcats played really well against Texas in Austin this season, with Cameron Dicker having to hit a game-winning kick as the clock expired to give the Longhorns the victory. Kansas State will now be in year two of head coach Chris Kleinman and will more than likely be seen as a dark horse to make the Big 12 championship game. The Longhorns must prepare for this game properly or it may turn into bad news.
Historically, Texas does not have the best record when traveling to Manhattan to face Kansas State. All-time, their record is 2-5 on the road against the Wildcats in Big 12 play. One of the two wins did come in 2018 when the Longhorns pulled out a gritty 19-14 win.
This game will also be coming off a bye for Texas, giving them more time to think about the Red River Shootout instead of Kansas State. No matter who is scheduled the week before that game, you will always wonder if the distraction will cause Texas to suffer in the game prior. Coming up against a good Kansas State team on the road may be fatal and could open the Big 12 season poorly for the Longhorns.
