Colts agree to trade QB Carson Wentz to Commanders

BREAKING: The Colts have agreed to trade QB Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders.

The Indianapolis Colts have agreed to trade quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Colts are reportedly getting back a package of draft picks that will include two third-round picks.

After just one season with the Colts, Wentz is already on his way out. There are still three years left on his current contract but the guaranteed money ends after the 2022 season.

After a disastrous 2020 season with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Colts acquired Wentz for a 2021 third-round and conditional 2022 second-round pick. Since the conditions were met, that second-round pick turned into a first-rounder for the Eagles and wound up being the No. 16 overall pick.

Though he certainly improved on his 2020 numbers, Wentz proved to be more of the same quarterback we had seen throughout his career. He showed flashes of brilliance but his erratic accuracy, inability to convert quick passes and a hero complex that led to questionable decision-making ultimately resulted in extremely volatile play.

For the 2021 season, Wentz made every start for just the third time in his career. He completed 62.4% of his passes for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 94.6 passer rating. He ranked 16th among NFL quarterbacks according to Football Outsiders’ DVOA metric.

The nail on the coffin was the final month of the season when Wentz completed 58.3% of his passes for 615 yards, five touchdowns, two interceptions and an 86.1 passer rating. His 4.4 QBR in the Week 18 play-in game against the Jaguars was one of the worst starting performances in Colts history.

With Wentz now gone, the Colts will look for another quarterback. What that holds remains to be seen, but Indy is cutting their losses after just one season.

It should be noted that this trade does not become official until March 16 at 4:00 p.m. ET, which is when the new league year begins.
