Jacksonville Jaguars pass-rusher Yannick Ngakoue is seemingly growing frustrated with his current situation as he remains on the team’s roster under the non-exclusive franchise tag. After expressing that he didn’t want a long-term deal earlier in the month, he reiterated those statements Tuesday by saying the organization was preventing him from taking care of his family and suggesting that both sides move on.

The 25 year old pass-rusher didn’t stop there, however, and took to Instagram to back his former teammate, Jalen Ramsey, who was traded last October. With Ramsey having issues with the organization, too, Ngakoue stated that Ramsey’s stance against the Jags organization was justified because he knew the truth about their front office.

As many can recall, Ramsey’s saga with the Jags started after a verbal altercation with Doug Marrone Week 2 when the Jags were playing the Houston Texans. That led to an interaction with then front office leader Tom Coughlin in which Ramsey says he was disrespected. Long story short, things got nasty and Ramsey demanded a trade, which resulted in the Los Angeles Rams picking him up for two first-round picks.

The Jags made an attempt to extend Ngakoue in July through a short-term deal, but according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, those negotiations ended abruptly. That led to Ngakoue taking a similar stance to Ramsey towards the organization, so it appears his mind might be set on sitting out if he isn’t traded.

With the draft coming up late next month, interest in Ngakoue should intensify and the Jags may be able to get another first-round pick for this year of next. In the meantime, it appears they will continue to take offers as none of them have seemingly wowed the Jags.

Yannick Ngakoue on future with Jags: ‘It’s obvious my time is up in my current situation’

Yannick Ngakoue reiterates that he wants out of Jacksonville but they may not be so quick to part ways with him.

Earlier in the month, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue made it clear that he wants to move on from the Jacksonville Jaguars and he’s ending the month echoing those sentiments.

After Mike Garafolo reported that multiple teams had interest in trading for the young pass-rusher, Ngakoue responded to the report via Twitter by reiterating that his time in Jacksonville was up and insisting that both sides move on.

Ngakoue’s relationship with the Jags took a massive spiral last year after the team didn’t put forth a strong enough effort to extend him. Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Jags offered Ngakoue a short-term deal worth $19 million annually in the early part of July, however, those negotiations ended prematurely by the end of the month.

With Dave Caldwell now running the front office (again), he stated that the Jags wanted to make Ngakoue their top priority after the 2019 season, but the damage done during Tom Coughlin’s tenure seemingly outweighed those statements. The team eventually had to end up franchising Ngakoue under a tender worth $17.7 million, which led to the point we’re currently at.

Heading forward, things should get rather interesting in terms of interest in Ngakoue as the draft is set for late April. Teams who weren’t able to land a marquee pass-rusher during free agency could now turn to the Jags, who clearly won’t let Ngakoue go unless the value is right.

Report: ‘Multiple’ teams have reached out to Jags about Yannick Ngakoue trade

The Jags seem to have a lot of interest from other teams for Yannick Ngakoue heading into draft month, but what teams make sense for him?

With the most important part of free agency behind us, the biggest question on the minds of Jacksonville Jaguars fans has been whether or not Yannick Ngakoue will be on the team this regular season. Earlier in the month, he made it clear that he doesn’t want to sign with the Jags long-term, which in all probability will lead to a trade of some sort.

Heading into draft month, as expected, there will be no shortage of suitors for the young pass-rusher who turned 25 Tuesday. Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, multiple teams have contacted the Jags about a trade, but as expected, the Jags have made it clear that the deal must be a good one to come off the former third-round pick.

In just speculating, one would have to think the Jags want at least a first-round pick (and maybe more) for Ngakoue when looking at what the Seattle Seahawks got for Frank Clark and the San Francisco 49ers got for DeForest Buckner. With two first-round selections already for 2020-21 and 12 selections for this April’s draft, adding a first for Ngakoue for this year or next would be huge for Dave Caldwell. Clearly, the veteran general manager is in the process of a rebuild, and if he can’t have Ngakoue on the team to make it a quicker process, flipping him for a first-round selection is the next best thing.

When looking at who could use Ngakoue, the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, and Seattle Seahawks (if they can’t retain Jadeveon Clowney) all make sense. At the moment, Philly, in particular, seems like the best spot because they are ready to win now and could be the most willing to part ways with their first-round selection of 2020 (No. 21 overall) or one next season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have loaded up on draft picks for the next two years and their riches got better Monday — well, slightly. The original fifth-round selection they received from the Baltimore Ravens (No. 170) for trading Calais Campbell Sunday was upgraded. Due to the Ravens receiving a higher fifth-round selection from the Atlanta Falcons during their transaction for Hayden Hurst, the Ravens will now be giving the Jags the newly acquired fifth-rounder (No. 153) instead.

The Jags will enter the 2020 NFL Draft with 11 picks after trading Campbell. The transaction also put the Jags in position where they have multiple draft picks in the first, fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds.

With the Jags heading towards a rebuild a lot of the late-round selections could provide the team with depth if they keep a majority of them and they may even get lucky on some like they did with quarterback Gardner Minshew II. More early-round selections could be coming in the future, too, as Yannick Ngakoue has come out to say that he doesn’t want a long-term deal with the Jags.

3 trades to keep in mind if Jags shop DE Yannick Ngakoue

Despite publicly stating he didn’t want a long-term deal with them, the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to place the non-exclusive franchise tag on defensive end Yannick Ngakoue Friday. While there is a slim chance he could suit up in black and teal at least one more year, it’s more likely Ngakoue will get his wish of playing for another team in the coming months.

Of course, the idea of trading Ngakoue has caused fans to wonder what the compensation for such a player would be — and luckily — several examples occurred last year which could give fans a general idea. Here are the three most identical situations that Jags fans should keep in mind as the Jags try and come to a solution:

Kansas City Chiefs DE Dee Ford traded to the San Francisco 49ers (March 12, 2019)

Almost exactly a year ago, the Kansas City Chiefs made a trade with the San Francisco 49ers to send Dee Ford their way for a 2020 second-rounder. Afterward, the 49ers locked him up with a five-year deal for $87.5 million.

Seattle Seahawks DE Frank Clark traded to the Chiefs (April 23, 2019)

Last offseason, the Seattle Seahawks parted ways with pass-rusher Frank Clark by trading him to the Chiefs, who needed a new pass-rusher after trading Ford. In return, the Seahawks got the Chiefs’ 2019 first-round selection, a 2020 second-round pick, and they swapped third-round picks for 2019. Clark also got his desired deal (five years $105.5 million with $63.5 million guaranteed).

Houston Texans trade pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney to Seahawks (August 31, 2019 )

After going through some of the regular season without Clark, the Seahawks realized they needed to boost their pass-rush and made a trade with the Houston Texans for franchise-tagged and disgruntled pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney. The Texans received a third-round pick, linebacker Jacob Martin, and pass-rusher Barkevious Mingo and agreed to pay $7 million of Clowney’s salary. However, the Seahawks agreed not to franchise Clowney a second time, which is why he has a good chance to hit the market this offseason.

Which deal should the Jags shoot for?

In my opinion, the Jags should shoot for the compensation that the Seahawks received in the Clark trade, however, a second-round pick feels more likely. That could prove to be ironic as the Seahawks have been rumored to be considering a trade for Ngakoue, who is a scheme fit when considering the Jags’ defense is the same as Seattle’s in a lot of ways.

Now, if the Jags had any chance of getting a first-rounder (which is slim) their best chance would be with a team picking late in the draft order because it’s hard to imagine any other teams giving up an earlier first-round selection. The Philadelphia Eagles (No. 20), Buffalo Bills (No. 22), Miami Dolphins (No. 26), Seahawks (No. 27), and Baltimore Ravens (No. 28) have been teams who people have associated Ngakoue with in the back of the first-round.

Of these teams, the Seahawks know that a first-round pick wouldn’t exactly be unfair for the Jags because they received one for Clark. However, aside from them, the Jags may have to settle for a second-round pick and a few other draft picks if they did business with anyone else.

Franchise tag deadline pushed back to same day as legal tampering period

The franchise tag deadline has been moved back again and will snowfall on the same day as the legal tampering period.

After pushing the franchise tag deadline back two days to Thursday, March 12 last month, the NFL and NFL Players Association have decided to push the deadline back once again. Per ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the deadline will now fall on Monday, March 16 (11:59 AM EST), which is the same day that the legal tampering period begins.

This news comes after the NFLPA decided to push back the voting deadline towards accepting or declining the new proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement from the NFL and its owners on Monday. Instead of it being on Thursday as originally planned, the deadline will now fall on Saturday, March 14. There have been players to come out and publicly support the new labor deal, while others have voiced their displeasure for it, so the extended time will hopefully lead to some cohesion.

As pointed out by Pro Football Talk, this move makes sense with the players still deciding on how they will vote because a new CBA could change the rules for pending free-agents. A prime example is the situation unfolding with the Dallas Cowboys, who have two notable stars who want new deals in quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver Amari Cooper. Under the current CBA, teams have the ability to use both the franchise and transition tags in 2020 and that would be handy for Jerry Jones to keep both off the open market.

As many are aware, the Jags elected to use their franchise tag on defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who came out to say he didn’t want a long-term deal with the Jags last week.

As mentioned above, the legal tampering period is scheduled to begin directly after the franchise tag deadline. The new league year and free-agency   will begin a few days later on Wednesday, March 18 at 4 p.m. ET.

Yannick Ngakoue to be franchise tagged by Jaguars

After stating his desire to move away form the team, Yannick Ngakoue is going to be franchise tagged by Jacksonville.

Pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue came out publicly Monday morning and stated his desire to move on from the Jacksonville Jaguars following four stellar years with the team. Reports came out last week stating that the pending free-agent was potentially looking for an average of $22 million per year, which would make him the highest-paid defensive end in the league.

The Jaguars were unable to satisfy the 24 year-old’s expectations and as a result, Ngakoue is unsurprisingly ready to move on from the team. Almost simultaneously alongside Ngakoue’s announcement, Adam Schefter of ESPN announced that the Jaguars are set to franchise tag Ngakoue with the following tweet:

The announcement from Ngakoue doesn’t come as much of a surprise given his recent social media activity. Over the weekend, he teased the announcement for Monday and swiftly crushed the hopes of one Jaguars fan, who responded with “pls tell me you’re staying in Jacksonville” only to be put down by an emphatic response.

Having made his intentions clear, there seems to be little chance that Ngakoue actually reports back on the tag. Therefore the Jaguars might use their premier talent as trade bait to acquire even more picks in the upcoming NFL Draft. There’s been some recent precedent for similar moves amongst teams across the league, as Dee Ford, Super Bowl winner Frank Clark, and Jadeveon Clowney were all subject to similar fates just last year.

Ngakoue won’t have the luxury of going through the free-agency process and hearing pitches from teams, but there will be a number of teams eager to trade for a player with 37.5 sacks in four seasons. Whilst this isn’t the clean break he perhaps wanted, Ngakoue’s mind appears to be set on playing elsewhere — or not playing at all.

Yannick Ngakoue says he doesn’t want a long-term deal from Jaguars

Jaguars DE Yannick Ngakoue says he’s informed the Jags that he doesn’t want a long-term deal with the team.

Monday morning, star pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue announced that he has no intentions of signing a new contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars via social media.

The news comes as no surprise, as the 24 year-old former Pro Bowler has been hinting at wanting a change of scenery through his Twitter and Instagram accounts for weeks now. Having grown agitated by the lack of urgency the Jaguars showed in re-signing him, Ngakoue thanked Jaguars fans for their support throughout the start of his career, but didn’t shy away from the fact he is eagerly anticipating a new beginning elsewhere.

Ngakoue was drafted by the Jags in 2016 in the third-round (No. 69 overall). Alongside cornerback Jalen Ramsey and Myles Jack, who were taken in the rounds before him, the trio made for general manager Dave Caldwell’s best draft class. However, only Jack and Ngakoue remain on the team and that number could decrease soon.

Heading into this offseason Caldwell said he would make signing Ngakoue his top priority, however, it’s unknown if the two parties had began contract talks afterward. Owner Shad Khan also said he spoke with Ngakoue after the season and expressed his willingness to keep the young pass rusher.

Throughout his four years in Jacksonville Ngakoue was able to garner a career total of 122 tackles, 37.5 sacks (good for second in franchise history), and 14 forced fumbles. His Pro Bowl season came in 2017, after he put up a career-high of 12 sacks and six forced fumbles.

Yannick Ngakoue says he has a PSA to make, but it likely won’t concern a new extension for now

Yannick Ngakoue’s Twitter has been garnering a lot of attention and he now has a PSA to make from it according to him.

The Twitter and Instagram accounts of Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue have provided fans with some interesting content as of late, and it a appears more is on the way. Friday, the young defensive end tweeted out “PSA Monday. Stay tuned.” He also included a checkered race flag emoji in the tweet, which seems to be his signature stamp of a victory lap.

When asked by a fan if he was staying in Jacksonville, Ngakoue replied “Good Try,” so it appears whatever he has to announce likely doesn’t involve a long-term deal.

The feeling is that Ngakoue will be franchise tagged before hard long-term contract negotiations begin — if they begin at all. Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell somewhat hinted that the team’s focus for now would be free agency and then the draft in his Combine presser.

Caldwell also specifically mentioned the franchise tag when  on Pro Football Talk’s show this week.

“You try to do what’s best for your team [as a general manager] obviously first, and then the player,” Caldwell said to Chris Simms and Mike Florio. “In this case, the player has rights, the team has rights. We didn’t negotiate — at least I didn’t negotiate the rules of the franchise tag or the transition tag and all that stuff. So, we’ll use everything in our power to keep Yannick [Ngakoue] here and hopefully it’s on a long-term deal and if it’s not it would be for a year on a franchise tag.”

To tag Ngakoue, it’s going to cost the Jags upwards of $19 million, which they currently have thanks to the releases of linebacker Jake Ryan and defensive tackle Marcell Dareus which put them at $21.4 million, per Over the Cap. With such an astronomical figure, one would think the Jags would do everything in their power to concoct a long-term deal, which should come with a lower 2020 cap figure.

Should Jags make Yannick Ngakoue the NFL’s highest-paid DE?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are heading towards a busy offseason and one in which they may have to extend defensive end Yannick Ngakoue. In all probability, they will have to place the franchise tag on him initially, but according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN, the young pass rusher’s mind could be on setting the market with a deal worth $22 million annually.

With such a deal, Ngakoue’s annual salary would be lower than just two pass rushers: Khalil Mack ($23.5 million per year) and Aaron Donald ($22.5 million per year). However, for a franchise that has struggled this past decade to find a true pass-rushing threat on the edge, an extension is definitely worth considering.

Since entering the league in 2016, Ngakoue has far exceeded the expectations of a third-round selection and has proven that he clearly deserved to be a first-round pick. Over the span of four seasons, he’s accumulated 122 tackles and 37.5 sacks, a number that puts him only under Tony Brackens when it comes to franchise players taking down the quarterback. Additionally, his ability to create turnovers (has 14 forced fumbles since being drafted) has basically been unmatched since 2016.

The counter-argument for Ngakoue getting paid has been his ability against the run. However, it’s an area of his game where improvement was made in 2019, and at the end of the day, the ability to get to the quarterback in today’s pass-happy league is the trait of his game that counts the most.
When taking all of this into account, one couldn’t blame the Jags for paying Ngakoue if they did. After all, their culture is one that hasn’t left the best impression on the league and its players, and finally paying one of their own could help repair that.

Now, we’d like to hear from you all at home. Should the Jags make Ngakoue the highest-paid defensive end in football? Let us know in the poll below.
