2023 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria vs. Canada odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Nigeria vs. Canada odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Nigeria and Canada meet Thursday in Group B play at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Kickoff from Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is set for 10:30 p.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Nigeria vs. Canada odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Nigeria is embroiled in controversy, as the team is in a dispute over failure to pay wages and reported broken promises. It’s possible that Nigeria could potentially boycott the match in protest, so that’s one thing to watch out for. Nigeria is led by F Asisat Oshoala, who won the Champions League trophy in 2022 while playing for Barcelona.

Canada is the Olympic champion from the most recent games in Tokyo in 2021 and is led by F Christine Sinclair. The team’s all-time leading scorer is making her 6th World Cup appearance. She has found the back of the net 190 times in 323 international appearances.

Nigeria vs. Canada odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:35 a.m. ET.

  • Moneyline: Nigeria +800 (bet $100 to win $800) | Canada -280 (bet $280 to win $100) | Draw +360 (bet $100 to win $360)
  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)
  • Both teams to score?: (Yes: +130 | No: -180)

Nigeria vs. Canada picks and predictions

Prediction

Canada 3, Nigeria 0

Moneyline (ML)

It will cost you more than 2 1/2 times your potential return betting Canada (-260) straight up on the 3-way line. That’s too much risk, although the defending Olympic champs should get out to a quick start against Nigeria.

There is just too much turmoil to consider rolling the dice on the Africans for the upset bid.

The best bet is to take NO (-180): BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE?, as it is likely Canada records the clean sheet. However, my personal limit for a standalone wager is -180, so just pass if this line gets more expensive.

Over/Under (O/U)

The lean is to the OVER 2.5 (-115). The Canadian side is experienced, especially with Sinclair at the helm. The Nigerians enter this tourney in shambles and it remains to be seen if they’ll have their hearts in it or if they even take the pitch.

We’ve seen on-pitch protests before, where a team has stood around, allowing the other team to move down and score. That shouldn’t be ruled out, as the Africans could potentially make a stand in protest. Over bettors would love to see it.

2023 Women’s World Cup: Australia vs. Ireland odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Australia vs. Ireland odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Australia faces Ireland Thursday on opening day of the 2023 Women’s World Cup in a Group B match. Kickoff from Sydney’s Accor Stadium — also known as Stadium Australia — is set for 6 a.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Australia vs. Ireland odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Australia received an automatic bid for hosting the World Cup — as did co-host New Zealand, which is in Group A. Nigeria and Canada join Australia and Ireland in Group B.

The Aussies are 5-1-0 (W-L-D) this year, going 2-1-0 in friendlies and 3-0 in winning the Cup of Nations tournament in late February. Their lone loss was a 1-0 setback to Scotland April 7, but they rebounded with back-to-back wins — 2-0 vs. England April 11 and 1-0 vs. France July 14. Their defense has been solid, allowing just 3 goals in the 6 matches.

Ireland is 1-3-1 (all friendlies) since January, most recently suffering a 3-0 shutout by France July 6. Ireland was also blanked in back-to-back matches by the USWNT 1-0 and 2-0, April 11 and April 8, respectively. The win came against Zambia, 3-2 June 22; the draw was a 0-0 result vs. China Feb. 22. Ireland finished second in Group A qualifying, posting a 5-1-2 record before defeating Scotland 1-0 in a 2nd-round playoff. Ireland scored 26 goals and allowed 4 in the 8 qualifiers.

Australia ranks 10th and Ireland 22nd in the Women’s FIFA World Rankings.

Australia vs. Ireland odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.

  • Moneyline: Australia -350 (bet $350 to win $100) | Ireland +850 (bet $100 to win $850) | Draw +450
  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: -140 | U: +100)

Australia vs. Ireland picks and predictions

Prediction

Australia 2, Ireland 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

Australia (-350) should benefit from playing on its home soil. The Aussies should receive an extra boost of energy from their fans. Plus, they have F Sam Kerr, arguably the best player in the tournament. She ranks No. 1 on ESPN’s best players of the World Cup listing.

Expect Kerr to help put on a show as Australia wins its opener. However, at -350, the price is too steep to back here.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (+100).

Ireland has the talent to perform well offensively, but it hasn’t shown it over the past several years. As mentioned, the Girls in Green have been held scoreless in 4 of 5 games this year. Their final 6 games of 2022 involved shutouts with 4 matches ending in a 1-0 final. The 4 forwards Ireland brought have a combined 60 caps but just 10 goals, so it hasn’t been a strong offensive side the last few years.

While Kerr is incredible for Australia, the Ireland defense allowed just 3 combined goals in the 2 friendlies vs. the U.S. in April. Australia has gone Under this total in 3 straight games and has held its opponent scoreless in 4 of its last 6 games. The Aussies have 3 players on its backline with 100+ caps and GK Lydia Williams has 102 as well.

Despite Kerr’s excellence, BET UNDER 2.5 (+100).

2023 Women’s World Cup: New Zealand vs. Norway odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s New Zealand vs. Norway odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

New Zealand battles Norway to commence the 2023 Women’s World Cup Thursday. Kickoff from Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, is set for 3 a.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the New Zealand vs. Norway odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

New Zealand has played 9 friendlies in 2023, losing all but 2 of them. It beat Vietnam 2-0 July 10 and drew Iceland 1-1 April 7. New Zealand lost by at least 2 goals in 5 of its 7 matches. Its closest competitions were 1-0 defeats to Argentina Feb. 23 and to Italy July 14. New Zealand, which ranks 26th in the Women’s FIFA World Rankings, received an automatic World Cup bid as a host.

Norway, which ranks 12th in the World Rankings, is 1-2-2 (W-L-draw) in 2023. Norway’s most recent friendlies were a 3-3 draw with Sweden April 11 and a 4-2 loss to Spain April 6. The Norwegian women went 1-1-1 in the 2023 Tournoi de France, placing 3rd in the February 4-team tournament — beating Uruguay 1-0, drawing France 0-0 and falling to Denmark 2-0. Norway qualified for the World Cup by going 9-0-1 in its qualifiers, placing atop Group F behind a dominating 47-2 goal advantage.

New Zealand vs. Norway odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 6:26 p.m. ET.

  • Moneyline: New Zealand +850 (bet $100 to win $850) | Norway -350 (bet $350 to win $100) | Draw +450
  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: -175 | U: +125)

New Zealand vs. Norway picks and predictions

Prediction

Norway 1, New Zealand 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

New Zealand (+850) may be at home, but it didn’t showcase enough to truly get behind the energy that being in front of its own fans will bring. It won’t be worth a gamble — even at +850 — against a Norwegian team that cruised through its qualifiers.

However, backing Norway at -350 doesn’t make much sense given the minimal reward.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (+125).

All 3 of Norway’s Tournoi de France matches finished Under 2.5 total goals, including a 1-0 win and a 0-0 draw. Norway has one of the best defenses in the tournament, giving up just 2 goals in 10 qualifying matches. Its most experienced player is D Maren Mjelde — the team’s captain has 165 caps.

Five of New Zealand’s last 6 matches have finished Under 2.5 goals, with 2 matches finishing with just 1 goal. New Zealand has scored just 3 goals in its last 9 matches. Against a quality defense, it will likely struggle to get opportunities.

TAKE UNDER 2.5 (+125).

New Zealand vs. USA Women’s National Team odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s New Zealand vs. USA odds and lines, with USWNT expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The United States Women’s National Team battles the New Zealand Women’s National Team Tuesday. Kickoff from Wellington Regional Stadium is set for 10:05 p.m. ET (HBO Max). Below, we preview Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the New Zealand vs. USA odds, and make our best USWNT bets, picks and predictions.

The USWNT will have 2 tune-up matches at New Zealand to prepare for the SheBelieves Cup, which kicks off on Feb. 16 with the USWNT against Canada. The USWNT is No. 1 in FIFA’s women’s world rankings. They haven’t lost or drawn in 11 matches, dating back to a 0-0 draw with the Czech Republic on Feb. 17, 2022.

New Zealand ranks 24th in the world. After these 2 matches, they’ll face Portugal and Argentina twice in the coming month and a half. The last New Zealand national team win was against South Korea on Nov. 30, 2021, albeit they have only played 3 other matches since then. They drew the Czech Republic in the SheBelieve Cup last year.

New Zealand vs. USA picks and predictions

Prediction

USA 3, New Zealand 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

Unless it is against a top-5 opponent, almost every USWNT game will get a pass on the moneyline as the odds present no value either way. They have simply been too dominant to bet against, but at (-2500), that just isn’t even close to enough return to bet on the USWNT.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 3.5 (+120).

The value is here to bet against goals, and the reasoning is mainly due to what happened last time these teams met and then what the United States should be looking to accomplish.

For starters, USWNT won 5-0 on Feb. 20, 2022. That isn’t a shocker, but they had just 4 shots on goal and 5 fouls while only having 59% possession. They weren’t playing at their top game with 3 of those 5 goals being own goals by Glasgow City D Meikayla Moore.

Those mistakes are unlikely to repeat themselves, and otherwise, the USWNT didn’t showcase much attacking dominance. Similarly, the USWNT  likely will be playing different combinations to try to figure things out.

The USWNT has gone Under this total in 7 of 12 games last year and in 4 of its last 5 matches. New Zealand has gone Under this total in 2 of 3 matches last year. With the USWNT trying to figure things out and the trends from last year, back the UNDER 3.5 (+120).
