San Jose State (1-0) vs New Mexico (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why San Jose State Will Win

The nice part about the 17-6 win over Air Force was how the team got the double-digit win even though not everything worked.

Arkansas/Texas A&M QB Nick Starkel threw a pick, but he hit 22-of-29 passes for 226 yards and two scores.

The defense gave up over 200 yards to the Air Force running game, but it didn’t get gouged. The team was able to keep control of the game enough to get up in the second half and hang on thanks to a bend-but-don’t-break game from the D.

Getting Rocky Long as the defensive coordinator is great, but New Mexico has a long, long way to go to merely be okay on D. The nation’s worst pass defense last season will get dinked and dunked on all evening.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why New Mexico Will Win

The coaching staff really is good.

Danny Gonzales is a hot young head coach in his first big gig, and bringing Long back to the program to handle the D was an inspired hire. It might take a while for the defense to make strides, but it won’t be nearly as bad – especially against the run.

The Spartans did nothing on the ground against Air Force with just 68 yards and the longest gain just seven yards. The offensive front did a nice job in pass protection, but it wasn’t ever able to get anything going.

Offensively, New Mexico has experience and explosion, but it all has to start clicking. Tevaka Tuioti is a terrific quarterback who just needs to start healthy, and the receiving corps has just about everyone back.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Just how quickly can the great Lobo coaches get this thing rolling?

The offense should be able to move the ball a bit, but can the defense handle Starkel and a San Jose State passing game that won’t be amazing, but should be able to get things moving just enough to overcome another bad day from the ground game.

San Diego State (1-0) vs Utah State (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why San Diego State Will Win

The Aztecs were close to perfect in the first half of the 34-6 win over UNLV, and they were pretty good even when they took their foot off the gas.

The running game averaged over six yards per carry with 287 yards and three touchdowns, and the defense controlled everything else. UNLV only converted one third down chance and rolled up a mere 186 yards of total offense.

Utan State’s offense didn’t do a thing in the 42-13 loss to Boise State, getting down 28-0 at halftime and finishing with a mere 203 yards of total offense. Boise State was good at getting into the Aggie backfield, and San Diego State should be great this week after generating five sacks and 14 tackles for loss.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Utah State Will Win

Boise State could throw to take advantage of Utah State loading up against the run. San Diego State is still suspect through the air.

The Aztec running game was great against the Rebels, but Utah State’s defensive line is good enough to look and play a whole lot better than it did in Boise.

San Diego State is very talented and very good, but it’s still not going to be a wild air show. Carson Baker only completed 12-of-25 passes for 137 yards and a score – the running game handled everything – and this week the Aggies should be able to load up and make the Aztecs and take away that other dimension.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Brady Hoke and his Aztecs came up with a fantastic first game against UNLV, but Utah State is a whole lot stronger an opponent.

It won’t be the walk in the park last week’s game was, but San Diego State will still be San Diego State. It’ll play with more of a faster tempo than it did under Rocky Long, but it’ll still grind, count on the defense, and maintain control of the game throughout.

Nevada (1-0) vs UNLV (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Nevada Will Win

The passing game worked great against a Wyoming defense that should be a whole lot better than it looked in the 37-34 Wolf Pack overtime win last week.

Carson Strong threw for 420 yards and four scores, Cole Turner and Romeo Doubs each came up with over 100 receiving yards, and the defense did a great job until a late Cowboy rally.

Nevada dominated the time of possession battle, and it should be able to lock down against a UNLV team that couldn’t get the offense going in last week’s 34-6 loss to San Diego State. But …

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why UNLV Will Win

San Diego State’s defense is special. UNLV might not have been able to do much of anything right – especially in the first half – but that was the opener for a team in rebuild mode.

There’s talent for new Rebel head coach Marcus Arroyo to work with, but the team needs help.

Nevada couldn’t stop getting flagged against Wyoming – it turned the ball over 12 times – and it turned it over twice. If the Rebels can start converting a more third down tries and come up with a few more sustained drives, they should show off the offense that’s eventually going to be dangerous.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

And here we go with not only the UNLV opener in the shiny new Allegiant Stadium, but it’s the battle for the Fremont Cannon.

UNLV has managed to pull this off two years in a row, but the team isn’t going to be there quite yet to get it done against a Nevada team that will get the passing game going in the first half, and will get a big day out of the defensive front throughout.

Hawaii (1-0) vs Wyoming (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Hawai’i Will Win

Hawaii has a … running game?

The 323 yards put up on Fresno State in the season-opening 34-19 win were the most by the program since putting up 344 in a win over Nevada back on early October of 2016.

QB Chevan Cordeiro ripped off several big runs, Miles Reed came up with a 109-yard day, and the program known for its high-powered passing game was consistently good for a full four quarters.

But the pieces are still there to throw.

Nevada’s Carson Strong bombed away for 420 yards and four scores in the overtime win over Wyoming last week, and now it’s up to Hawaii to be adaptable.

Week 9 College Football Schedule, Predictions

Why Wyoming Will Win

25ish degrees.

It’s supposed to be about 80 in Honolulu when the ball is kicked off in Laramie, where the temperature should be somewhere around the mid-to-high 20s.

Hawaii is still Hawaii and should be able to throw enough to matter, but the running game that worked so well last week should have problems against a Wyoming defensive front that did a great job of getting into the Nevada backfield and allowed just 76 rushing yards.

This is still a good Cowboy defense – it’s a whole lot better than it looked in the loss – and the team should do a far better job of controlling the clock.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Wyoming should be a whole lot better at home – chalk up last week to a bad opener.

However, Hawaii was terrific in the opener under new head coach Todd Graham with enough tweaks to dominate Fresno State on the road. It’ll be able to run well again, and the talent is still there from last year’s great Rainbow Warrior team to make this a fight, but Wyoming will go back to being Wyoming in Laramie.

SMU (5-1) vs Navy (3-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Navy Will Win

313 yards. That’s what Cincinnati came up with on the ground in last week’s 42-13 win over SMU.

Memphis and North Texas hit the 200-yard mark, and overall, SMU is allowing 194 yards per game. The defensive front decent enough to get into the backfield, but that’s not the point against Navy.

The Navy ground game hasn’t been as strong as it should be, but when it hits 200 yards, it’s 3-0. It’s 0-3 when it’s under 300, but it’s also got a bit of a passing game to worry about, too. Running is what Navy wants to do, but Dalen Morris is able to hit his downfield passes.

Week 9 College Football Schedule, Predictions

Why SMU Will Win

Navy’s running game is good, but it’s not nearly as dominant as it was last year, and it’s not close to being as strong as it needs to be. The bigger problem is a defense that’s not able to hold up against teams that try to establish the run.

SMU is thought of as a big-time passing team – and it is – but it’s impressive when it tries to run, averaging 4.5 yards per carry with a few blowup games including 14 rushing touchdowns.

Navy’s defensive front was rolled from the start, getting beaten up by BYU for 301 rushing yards, allowing 369 against Air Force, and getting hit for 5.7 yards per carry so far.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

SMU will balance out the offense and should have a whole lot of success.

Yes, SMU couldn’t handle the Cincinnati running game last week, but the Navy offensive line isn’t nearly as strong as the Bearcat front five – it’s not going to bash away.

Navy will have a few good scoring drives, but it won’t control the clock or the game like it needs to. SMU will get up early and Navy won’t be able to work its way back.

UCF (3-2) vs Houston (2-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why UCF Will Win

The passing game has been phenomenal.

There might be issues with depth, defense, and closing out tight games against good teams, but there’s no one better at keeping up with the Houston offense than Dillon Gabriel and a Knight passing game that that’s hit the 400-yard mark in four of the five games and 330 yards against Tulsa.

As always, the offense runs a ton of plays – a TON of plays.

UCF averages over 90 plays a game. By comparison, Houston – whose offense isn’t exactly ground and pound – runs about 75. The stress and pressure will be on from  the start against a pass defense that got hit by BYU for 400 yards and by Navy – Navy? – for 206.

Just assume a 450-yard day from Gabriel and go from there.

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why Houston Will Win

Just assume Houston QB Clayton Tune already has 300 passing yards.

The Cougar offense doesn’t bomb away like UCF’s does, but it doesn’t always have to. The defense really is okay in several ways with a pass rush that should get to Gabriel early on and with a secondary that might get hit hard, but will come up with several third down stops.

UCF’s defense has been a rumor far too often.

It allowed over 200 rushing yards in three of the five games, and he’s allowed everyone to hit the 200-yard passing game with ease.

The Houston offense will work.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

You want offense?

No, really. Do you want OFFENSE?

Getting 35 points probably doesn’t even get you in the door.

Both teams will trade big shots with a combined 800 passing yards and a whole lot of fun plays. The weather is expected to be perfect, the offenses will be great, and the team with the ball last will win.

It’s the fourth road game in six for UCF, it’s a huge moment for Houston, and in a wild game, the Cougars will pull it off on the final drive.

Temple (1-2) vs Tulane (2-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Temple Will Win

The offense and the team are doing a whole lot of things right.

The O is great at moving the chains, the team isn’t getting flagged enough to matter, and the secondary has been solid – although it’s misleading to say it leads the AAC in pass defense.

There are plenty of good parts to a team that’s slightly better than 1-2. The Navy loss could’ve gone either way late, and there’s no shame in losing on the road to Memphis.

It’s all about stopping the run against Tulane, and the Owls are just good enough to keep everything in check. Getting into the backfield doesn’t matter too much against the Green Wave, but not allowing the gashing runs is everything. Temple allowed 3.9 yards per carry.

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why Tulane Will Win

That Tulane running game really is good when it gets going, but the team can do more than that.

The pass rush continues to be fantastic, coming up with two sacks or more in every game but Navy – who doesn’t really throw – and the pressure has to come against an Owl team that finally dealt with a good pass rush against Memphis, and struggled.

If Tulane can be solid on the ground, keep doing a good job of not turning the ball over, and stall the Temple O with pressure behind the line. Do all of that, and the recent rough slide should turn.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s the problem for Tulane. The running game hasn’t worked well enough over the last three weeks – failing to get to 200 yards in any of them – and they were all losses. Tulane got to over 200 last year against Temple and lost.

However, Tulane is coming off a rough run of three road games in four weeks with the last three games against Houston, SMU, and UCF. As long as the weather doesn’t play a huge factor one way or another, the Green Wave should be good enough on the ground and on the defensive line to stop the three-game losing streak.

College Football Free Predictions, Previews Winners and Whiners: Week 9

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

From Winners and Whiners

We’re in Week 9 in College Football and we’re now one week away from the Pac-12 and MAC starting up. The Big 10 opened up with a bang as Wisconsin and Ohio State dominated, while Penn State was shocked by Indiana in overtime on a controversial two-point conversion. This week, No. 3 Ohio State take on No. 18 Penn State, Texas faces No. 6 Oklahoma State and Memphis takes on No. 7 Cincinnati.

(note: some of these picks were made by our Editor and are subject to change)

*Ohio State looked very impressive in their first game, crushing Nebraska 52-17. Justin Fields was sensational, completing 20 of 21 for 276 yards and two TDs. Penn State lost their first game on the last play in a 36-35 loss at Indiana. The Nittany Lions missed star RB Journey Brown, who has a medical issues. They also will now be without RB Noah Cain, who suffered a season-ending injury against the Hoosiers. There is going to be more pressure on PSU QB Sean Clifford, who rushed for 119 yards, but was intercepted twice. The Buckeyes want to make a statement. Lay the 12 on the road.

*Texas travels to Stillwater to take on an undefeated Oklahoma State team. The Cowboys are coming off a 24-21 win over Iowa State and they’ve been winning with defense. That’s the most points they’ve surrendered all season as they are allowing just 12 points per game. Texas is coming off a 27-16 win over Baylor and their defense actually showed up for that one. Texas hasn’t won in Stillwater since 2014. Keep that streak alive. Take the Cowboys and give the 3.5.

*Cincinnati has a long shot of making the playoffs. They are off to a 4-0 starts and have looked very impressive doing so. They passed their first road test last week, when they demolished SMU 42-13. They take on a strong Memphis team, who had already lost at SMU 30-27 on Oct. 3. They bounced back with wins over Temple and UCF at home. The Bearcats have won with defense, as they are allowing just 12.5 points per game. QB Desmond Ridder has 723 yards  passing and had 179 yards rushing against SMU. The Tigers average 38.8 points per game and 548.8 yards. QB Brady White has 17 TD passes in four games. Memphis has dominated Cincinnati lately, but that ends here. Their defense is just not up to par. Lay the points and take Cincinnati.

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The team does what it does, it does it very well, and then, it moves on.

So SMU has a high-powered offense and came into last week’s game on a roll? Cincinnati has a strong running game, a nasty defense, and it’s doing most of the little things right.

The pass defense isn’t a rock, but it doesn’t allow a whole lot of big things down the field – just one touchdown pass given up with eight picks – and the offense keeps finding ways to get the job done.

This isn’t necessarily a high-powered attack, but it all clicked against the Mustangs with QB Desmond Ridder running for 179 of the team’s 313 yards on the ground. Memphis has an okay run defense so far, but no one has tried pounding away quite like the Bearcats will.

Memphis allows over 260 yards of total offense per game more than the Bearcats do, but …

Why Memphis Will Win

The Tiger offense is humming.

It hasn’t seen anything quite like the Cincinnati defense yet – the Bearcat secondary and tough play up front will be a problem – but it has the diverse offense that can take what SMU wanted to do last week and ramp it up.

Memphis is getting a huge year out of QB Brady White, the running game is grinding just fine – even if it’s not the home-run hitting thrill show of the last few years – and there aren’t enough turnovers to be that big a problem.

The Tigers have to get up early. Cincinnati has an offense, but it’s not quite the shootout type of team Memphis is. Take UC out of its comfort zone and make it press, but …

What’s Going To Happen

No one has been able to do that yet. No one has been able to knock Cincinnati off of its game.

Memphis will get its shots in, but after losing twice last year – including in the AAC Championship – and dropping five straight going back to 2013, don’t think this doesn’t really, really matter to the Bearcat program.

The UC running game will control the tempo and the clock with answers for every Memphis score that will seem like a momentum-changer.

The Tiger lines are good. The Bearcat lines are better.
