Tulsa (2-1) vs East Carolina (1-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Tulsa Will Win

Since when did Tulsa start playing (occasionally) killer D and getting phenomenal play out of the offensive front?

This team is the absolute real deal defensively, doing a fantastic job on third downs, holding up well against the run – allowing just 141 yards to Oklahoma State, and not allowing much of anything happening in the backfield.

East Carolina doesn’t have the pass rush to bother the Golden Hurricane backfield and the offense isn’t moving the ball consistently enough on third downs.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why East Carolina Will Win

The Pirate offense has been good at doing a little of everything right.

The passing game threw for over 200 yards in three of the four games, and the running attack hit the 300-yard mark in three games, too. The O is good enough to find a way to work against this Tulsa D that’s going take away one part of the attack.

The wins might not be coming, but the Pirates are doing a great job of controlling the tempo and the action – they should have the ball for around 35 minutes.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Tulsa’s defense is going to take control early on. UCF and its high-powered passing game went off, but that’s the only thing that has worked so far on this D.

East Carolina will find enough of a passing game to keep this from getting out of hand, but the Golden Hurricane will come up with the key third down stops the Pirates won’t.

Colorado State (0-0) vs Fresno State (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Colorado State Will Win

Where did it go wrong in Fresno State’s 34-19 loss to Hawaii at home last Saturday?

The Bulldogs were able to move the ball well, but they turned it over four times, and shockingly against a Hawaii team – even with its new coaching staff under Todd Graham – the run defense got destroyed.

Fresno State gave up 323 yards on the ground, and new Ram head man Steve Addazio is going to want get the attack rolling right away. There’s a good mix of speed and thump in the Colorado State backfield, the offensive line will be okay – at least that’s the hope – and the passing attack should have enough to stretch the field in the opener.

Colorado State has tape on Fresno State. It’ll get running. However …

Why Fresno State Will Win

Fresno State QB Jake Haener threw three interceptions in the opener, but he’s a talent who should settle in.

So many teams across the board are a whole lot better than they looked in their openers, and that should be Fresno State. The timing away a bit off, RB Ronnie Rivers didn’t get rolling, and it was hard to get control of the game with Hawaii running so well.

However, the talent and pieces are there on offense to more balanced – the running game isn’t going to be that mediocre too often – and the defensive line should once again be great at getting into the backfield. The Bulldogs generated four sacks last week, and they should live behind the line against a new-look Ram offensive front that will be good in time, but has to be sharp from the start.

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado State’s offense will try to run right away, but it’ll have limited success against a Fresno State defense that’s going fix the glitch after not being able to handle Hawaii QB Chevan Cordeiro when it took off.

The Bulldog O will still sputter a bit, but it’ll have a sharper all-around Game 2. Being at home doesn’t mean what it normally does, but Fresno State isn’t losing two in a row.

Georgia Southern (3-2) vs South Alabama (3-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The Eagles have been fantastic at controlling the block, controlling games, and handling the tempo by owning third downs on both sides of the ball. It’s been holding on to the ball for a Sun Belt-high 33:42 a game.

South Alabama likes to try controlling the game on its own and dominate the clock, but that’s not happening against this rushing game.

The Jaguars have a fantastic run defense – more on that in a moment – and the numbers will show it, but it only faced one offense that’s remotely like they’re going to see when they walk into Allen E. Paulson, and that was the Tulane attack run by former Georgia Southern head man Willie Fritz.

Tulane was the only team to run for over 200 yards and five yards per carry against South Alabama, and it won.

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why South Alabama Will Win

Will the Georgia Southern running game be able to work?

It didn’t get going last week against Coastal Carolina, and the Eagles lost. It failed to hit 200 yards against Louisiana, and it was a tight 20-18 loss. The Eagles hit well over 200 yards – over 300 in two of the games – in the other three games and won them all.

South Alabama has allowed fewer than 100 rushing yards in three of the five games – won them all – and allowed over 200 just once. The defensive isn’t great at getting into the backfield, but it’s an active bunch that’s great at getting around the ball. Combine that, with an efficient passing game, and the Jaguars can control the game.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

The South Alabama defense will keep this close throughout the first half, but Georgia Southern will do a better job of controlling the game, it’ll own third downs, and it’ll have a good enough game in the secondary to get past the loss to Coastal Carolina and get back in the Sun Belt chase.

Oklahoma (3-2) vs Texas Tech (2-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Oklahoma Will Win

It seems like it’s starting to kick in for Spencer Rattler.

It’s going to take a little while for the star prospect from last year to get every aspect of the Lincoln Riley offense down, but it’s almost like finding a way to get through the finish of Texas win might have been the spark.

He misfired on a few throws against TCU, but the explosion was there in the 33-14 win, averaging over 15 yards per pass with no picks and two touchdown passes.

Texas Tech’s pass defense is the worst in Big 12 so far. It has been hit for over 300 yards in each of the last two games and three times in the five games, and Rattler is about to make it three games in a row.

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Is this a new Texas Tech?

Seriously, it beat West Virginia with just 169 passing yards?

A scoop-and-score from the defense helped, but the Red Raider offense was outgained by 90 yards overall and still mangled to pull it off.

New QB Henry Colombi has been a good mid-range passer – he hit 22-of-28 passes against WVU, but there weren’t many big plays – and connecting on 76% of throws is enough to help the team be the best in the Big 12 on third downs. This might not be the typical Texas Tech team, but if this all starts to work, it’s going to do a better job of controlling games.

What’s Going To Happen

Usually, Texas Tech would bring the firepower and the passing game to keep up with an improving but shaky Sooner team. The OU passing game is still efficient, and the defense has built on what it did last year and hasn’t the upside to be a whole lot better as the season goes on.

Oklahoma has won eight in a row in the series and will keep it all rolling as Rattler is going to look terrific against a defense that won’t get to him often enough.

Oklahoma State (4-0) vs Texas (3-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

So what’s the problem with Texas, besides the issue with the fight song?

It’s fine offensively – it leads the Big 12 in scoring – but there’s a wee bit of a turnover issue. It’s okay defensively, but there’s no pass rush and the secondary has been hit hard in various shootouts. However, there’s one big problem overall.

The run defense. When it’s good, Texas wins. When it’s not, Texas loses. It’s 0-2 when allowing over 200 yards on the ground, and 3-0 when it doesn’t.

Oklahoma State leads the Big 12 in rushing, averaging 216 yards per game. The offense stalled against Tulsa to start the season – that was a weird game in a whole slew of ways – but it kicked in full force on the ground over the last three games.

The Cowboys don’t have to rip off huge runs, but as long as they’re able to averaging somewhere close to five yards per carry, they’ll control the action. But …

Why Texas Will Win

The Texas run defense problem is volume. Keep hammering on this group, and it’ll break. However, it’s only giving 3.5 yards per carry, and it’s doing a decent job of forcing fumbles and other mistakes.

Yeah, Oklahoma State leads the Big 12 in total defense. But it struggled a bit last week when it finally faced a decent O in the 24-21 win over Iowa State, and no one’s confusing Tulsa, West Virginia or Kansas with Clemson offensively.

Texas is going to bring the most explosion, the best passing game, and the best all-around offense Oklahoma State has seen by far.

This is Sam Ehlinger’s day.

He was great against Oklahoma, but Texas lost. Last year, he hit 72% of his passes with four touchdowns and ran for 70 yards. He certainly knows the Cowboys, but …

What’s Going To Happen

This isn’t your 2019 Oklahoma State team. This defense really is good, and the running game really is fantastic.

In so many ways, this is it.

Oklahoma State has to play four of its last five games on the road – including Oklahoma and Kansas State – so for all intents and purposes, a loss makes it very, very hard to get to the Big 12 Championship. A loss also realistically ends any possibility of the conference getting back to the College Football Playoff.

Texas already has two losses, and one of them is to Oklahoma. Lose a third game in four, and forget about shot at playing for the Big 12 title – and ramp up the Tom Herman hot seat, too.

Oklahoma State lost last year, but it has won four of the last five in the series.  Ehlinger will be great, the Texas offense will be great, and the game will be great.

Chuba Hubbard will be great, too, with his fourth straight 100-yard game as the Cowboys run for 250 yards in the win.

TCU (1-3) vs Baylor (1-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why TCU Will Win

Baylor’s offense can’t run.

A struggling ground game is equaling fewer first downs – fewest in the Big 12 – and an offense that’s having problems scoring. That the Bears have only scored seven times in 11 red zone trips is part of the issue, too.

Baylor simply hasn’t been able to score over the last two games after rolling Kanas to start the season.

But it’s really about the inability to run the ball.

The 2019 Bears averaged 4.6 yards per carry with 35 touchdowns. They only managed to run for fewer than 100 yards three times. Once was in the Big 12 Championship against Oklahoma, once was in the Sugar Bowl against Georgia, and the other time was a 99-yard day against TCU.

Baylor has failed to run for 65 yards – with no scores – in each of the last two games.

Why Baylor Will Win

TCU’s offense has come to a stop.

Kansas State and Oklahoma have okay defenses, but they’re hardly the killers that should only decent teams to just 14 points. TCU rolled past 450 yards in each of the first two games, and failed to get to 360 in either of the last two – both losses.

What’s been the problem? The Horned Frogs can’t convert on third downs, the running game hasn’t been effective enough, and the takeaways aren’t coming to help make everything easier with just four on the year and one in the last two games.

Baylor might have a slew of issues, but it’s not having a turnover problem. It’s not going to hand TCU easy points.

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor hasn’t been able to find any sort of a groove so far.

The team has only played three games, it’s had to deal with virus issues, and it’s all happening with a new coaching staff and a whole slew of new parts to last year’s great puzzle.

It’s losing the tight games – at least so far – that the 2019 team was able to win.

TCU is 0-3 at home, 1-0 on the road, and it’s lone win came against Texas in a thriller that could’ve and should’ve gone the other way.

At home, Baylor will finally get just enough of the offensive parts moving to win a very close, very tight battle with QB Charlie Brewer carrying the team in the fourth quarter.

Kansas (0-5) vs Iowa State (3-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

It’s all about improving and finding parts to build around, and freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels appears to be someone who can be one key guy going forward.

He wasn’t phenomenal against Kansas State – he has yet to throw a touchdown pass this season – but he ran for two scores.

Kansas isn’t doing a whole lot of things right, but its not getting penalized, it’s generating a little bit of pressure behind the line, and the pass defense hasn’t been totally miserable. However …

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Jayhawk offense simply can’t score. The offensive line isn’t doing enough to give everyone time to work, there aren’t any long drives to take control of games, and as promising as Daniels is, there’s nothing big happening down the field yet.

Iowa State has been rocky, but the offensive line has been outstanding in pass protection and the O isn’t making enough big mistakes to give the Jayhawks easy chances.

KU has yet to come up with more than 370 yards of total offense and failed to get to 200 in two of the previous three games. A few early Cyclone scores end this.

What’s Going To Happen

Five wins in a row and nine in the last ten years. Iowa State doesn’t historically own a whole lot of series, but there haven’t been any problem against Kansas. It’s not going to change now.

It’ll take a total Cyclone meltdown for this to be anything but an easy double-digit win. Coming off a loss to Oklahoma State, Iowa State will be focused.

Kansas State (4-0) vs West Virginia (3-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcat defense has been able to step up after starting quarterback Skylar Thompson went down.

This is the Big 12, where 400-yard days of total offense just get you in the door. Texas Tech was able to get 404 yards on the Cats, and that’s it – no one else has been able to crank up the O, and that includes Oklahoma.

Will Howard was terrific against Kansas and isn’t turning the ball over, the defense leads the Big 12 in takeaways, and the team has been able to keep on rolling through a whole lot of adversity.

As always, the team seems to be able to create a whole lot of breaks – no one has yet to make a field goal against the Cats, missing all five attempts.

However …

Why West Virginia Will Win

Kansas State isn’t great on third downs on either side of the ball, the pass rush is just okay, and the run defense can be pushed when tested. Turnover margin hasn’t been everything for the Wildcats, but it has played a huge role.

West Virginia only lost the turnover margin once – the -2 came in the win over Baylor.

The offense has stepped up the passing game, the defense has been excellent against the run, and the team leads the conference in total defense thanks to a strong line and a great pass rush.

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia is 3-0 this season when allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards, and 0-2 when giving up more than the mark. Kansas State’s ground game isn’t dominant, but it’s had no problems getting over 100 yards in any of the last three games.

However, West Virginia is 3-0 at home. The defenses are going to keep the score low, with the Mountaineers coming through with enough of a passing game in the fourth quarter to bounce back from the loss to Texas Tech.
