USF vs East Carolina Game Preview

Why USF Will Win

Was it just a case of finally playing someone it could beat?

USF was awful to start the season, but outside of the easy win over Florida A&M from the FCS, there weren’t any games the team was supposed to win.

And then it got Tulsa and lost in a 32-31 thriller – both teams were on the same level. And then head coach Jeff Scott finally got his first win over an FBS team with a 34-14 blowout of Temple last week.

East Carolina is also in the USF wheelhouse.

The Bull running game went ballistic on the Owls with 421 yards. Jaren Mangham took off for 152 yards and two scores and Kelley Joiner added 126 – now they all get their shot against an East Carolina run defense that been strong but should give up 200 yards.

As good as the Pirate offense has been at times, it’s awful on third downs converting just 25% of the time and coming off a 1-of-12 day in the loss to Houston.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why East Carolina Will Win

Yeah, USF played a bunch of teams it shouldn’t have beaten – NC State, Florida, BYU, SMU – but the pass defense really is that mediocre.

The D couldn’t stop much of anything that those four teams tried to do, but Tulsa put up 535 yards with a dangerous and balanced attack.

East Carolina is coming off its worst rushing day of the season 82 yards against Houston – but the passing game has been consistent and should be able to keep pushing the ball down the field against a secondary that allowed multiple scoring passes to ever FBS team but Temple.

It’ll help that the USF defense is the worst in America in sacks with just four sacks and one in the last four games.

On the other side, the ECU D might have issues against the USF running game, but the line should be okay at getting bend the line.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be fun.

East Carolina has a defense this year to go along with the normally good offense, but USF is starting to find its groove.

The Bull running game will be good, the East Carolina passing attack will be great, and the home team will generated two key takeaways to pull off a solid win.

Coastal Carolina vs Troy Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

What did Appalachian State do that was so right in the win over Coastal Carolina?

It got off to a hot start, it was more physical on the offensive line and ran well, and the defensive front was able to get out on the Chanticleer playmakers in open space and swarm, holding the O to just 55 rushing yards.

Troy has to run well right away. It’s coming off its best running day of its season with 200 yards in the win over Texas State.

The defense is No. 1 in the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss – it can get into the backfield and bother the Coastal Carolina running game before it gets started.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Troy hasn’t seen anything like this.

It had to deal with the Liberty offense and all of its playmakers – and held up reasonably well – but it was still a 21-13 loss.

Appalachian State played as well as could be asked for in the win over the Chanticleers, and it was still close in a 30-27 fight.

It took a monster offensive performance from the Mountaineers, and Troy doesn’t have that much firepower. There’s not much from the ground attack and there’s nothing happening with the passing game down the field.

The Trojan D might be great, but get down early, and forget it.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Coastal Carolina will bounce back fast.

The speed of the Chanticleer offense will offset the Trojan pass a wee bit, and there won’t be enough turnovers to matter.

Troy takes the ball away a ton thanks to it pressure, but Coastal Carolina’s offense will be efficient and won’t screw this up after a great first quarter.

Virginia vs BYU Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

Head coach Bronco Mendenhall is coming back to his old stomping grounds – he was terrific as the BYU head coach from 2005 to 2015 – and he’s bringing a team with a high-powered attack that’s bombing away on everyone.

Only WKU has a better air show than the Cavaliers who are averaging 405 yards per game while not ignoring the ground attack, especially over the four-game winning streak.

BYU has the defense to hold up, but it can’t make mistakes. It’s been awesome overall in turnover margin, but it turned it over four times in the loss to Boise State, and it struggled defensively on third downs in the loss to Baylor and allowed Washington State to convert 64% of its third down tries.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why BYU Will Win

The Cougar pass defense might be able to do just enough to hold up.

It’s used to facing strong passing games – Arizona State, Baylor, Washington State – and held up okay.

It got bombed on by Utah State, but the two turnovers helped on the way to the win. That was the only game the Cougars allowed multiple touchdown passes.

Arizona, Utah, and Baylor all threw one scoring pass, and that’s it along with the two given up to the Aggies. The secondary will allow Virginia to hit the midrange passes, but it’s not going to allow a whole slew of big things.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia is used to playing in close battles – it’s been in fun fights in three of its last four games, winning them all – but it’s not going to generate the takeaways needed to win the Bronco Bowl.

Both teams will bomb away. Expect more than 700 passing yards between the two, but BYU will run a wee bit better.

The home field will matter here. It’s the first time back in Provo for the Cougars since the loss to Boise State, and just the second home game since late September.

Louisville vs NC State Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

The running game picked a great time to come up with its best performance of the season.

At 3-3 and in desperate need of a win to stay in the hunt for a bowl game, the Cardinals rolled for 331 yards on the ground. Trevion Cooley ran for over 100 yards, and QB Malik Cunningham put up 133 yards and three touchdown.

Throw in the steady production from Jalen Mitchell, and with Hasaan Hall running for over 100 yards in the previous game against Virginia, and the ACC’s great running game has a ton of weapons.

Get that attack going, rely on the defensive front to generate enough pressure to force a few stops, and hope this gets into a shootout.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why NC State Will Win

The ACC’s best defense is amazing against the run.

Louisiana Tech was able to come up with 139 yards, and that was the best anyone’s been able to do. The D hasn’t allowed more than 100 yards on the ground in four of the last six games – it’s allowing 93 rushing yards per game.

The offense doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter, the defense is phenomenal on third downs, and it should all work against an inconsistent Cardinal team that has way too many holes.

NC State has one of the nation’s most consistent passing games – 230 yards or more in every game – but it’s 0-2 when it doesn’t get to 120 rushing yards. Louisville allowed 86 yards on the ground against Eastern Kentucky, and 35 in the loss to Virginia – but the Cavaliers threw for almost 500.

The Wolfpack will blow past 130 yards on the ground, but …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can NC State’s pass defense come through?

It’s 4-0 when it doesn’t allow 200 yards through the air, it had to much of a fight against a bad Louisiana Tech team that threw for 341, and it lost when Mississippi State almost got to 300 and gave up 325 to Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke.

Louisville has thrown for 200 or more in every game but last week against Boston College, and that’s when it ran wild.

NC State’s defense was great against a whole lot of mediocre offenses, but it hasn’t faced anyone with Louisville’s versatility and balance. There’s going to be one problem …

The Cardinals will turn the ball over in a key spot, and the Wolfpack won’t.

Notre Dame vs North Carolina Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

Which North Carolina will show up?

It’s a maddeningly inconsistent team that can’t come up with the same game twice, but when the running game is working and Sam Howell gets time to work, it’s all deadly.

The Notre Dame offense is far more consistent, but it’s still not all that great.

The Irish passing game will get its 200 yards, the running game will be decent-not-amazing, and the team scores when there’s a chance and lets the defense do the rest.

Unfortunately for the Irish, star S Kyle Hamilton is out with a knee injury, the secondary has allowed 240 passing yards or more in five of the last six games, and Howell has throw two or more touchdowns in every game since the opener against Virginia Tech.

The Tar Heel passing game will move the chains and should be able to dink and dunk on the Irish secondary all game long, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The defense continues to be really, really good.

It’ll give up yards – again, decent offenses can throw on this group – but the front hasn’t allowed much of anything since the opener against Florida State, the takeaways are still coming, and the pass rush stepped it up after a lull with a good game against USC.

No, the Notre Dame offensive line still isn’t quite up to where it needs to be, but it’s improving. The running game came up with its two most productive games of the season, and North Carolina doesn’t have a consistent enough pass rush to be that big a concern, but …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Tar Heel defense get behind the line? It really is a measuring stick for the team – it’s 3-0 when coming up with three sacks or more, and 1-3 when it doesn’t – and it’ll get to the Notre Dame quarterbacks with at least three sacks.

Even so, Jack Coan will hold up well – he’s coming off of two straight solid games, at least for what the offense needs – the Irish defensive front will stop the Tar Heel running game, and it’ll be yet another routine-looking win as those keep piling up.

Wake Forest vs Duke Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

Time to get the O going.

Duke doesn’t have enough on defense to hold up against the Wake Forest offensive machine, but it can run, it’s got enough of a passing game to bomb away, and it needs to keep up the pace.

The Demon Deacons might be fantastic, but they don’t control the clock and they don’t do much of anything against the run.

Army, Syracuse, and Louisville might all have special running games, but allowing close to 1,000 yards in three games is a whole lot.

The Wake Forest D has given up over 500 yards of total offense in each of the last four games, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The team keeps on winning even with the porous defense.

On the flip side, Duke’s defense is last in the ACC in passing yards allowed, it’s last in the ACC in scoring and total defense, too.

You want to run on this group? Go ahead. You want to bomb away? Give it a shot.

The Wake Forest offense doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter, it’s got a great way of answering scores with its own good drive, and for all of the problems on defense, it gets into the backfield.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Wake Forest is too good at generating the big play at the key times to ever be out of this.

Don’t be shocked if Duke hangs around, though.

The clunker in the 48-0 loss to Virginia and 38-7 disaster to North Carolina were more of an outlier for this team. Wake Forest will pull away with a big burst in the second quarter and cruise, but Duke will peck away just enough to make the other side continue to try.

Boston College vs Syracuse Game Preview

Why Boston College Will Win

The Eagles have to take back control of their season by taking back control of their third down chances.

The offense was just fine over September when it was able to come up with a whole lot of third down conversions and – at least for the first three games – third down stops. Over the last three games – all losses – the O hasn’t been able to keep the chains moving, converting just 13-of-45 tries, 29%.

Overall, Syracuse’s defense hans’t been too bad on third downs, but it’s allowed teams to convert 40% or more in four of the last five games.

This might seem like a nitpicky thing, but when it comes to dealing with Syracuse,  controlling the clock and the tempo matters because …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Syracuse Will Win

Syracuse is killing it on the ground.

Even against Clemson – when it ran for 165 yards – it averaged 5.5 yards per carry and was effective. It ripped through Wake Forest for 354 yards, pointed on Virginia Tech for 314, and it’s getting massive seasons out of RB Sean Tucker and QB Garrett Shrader.

So how is Boston College doing against the run?

It was amazing to start the season, but it couldn’t stop Clemson. Right now, you and the people in the Starbucks drive-through line could hold the Tiger ground game to 104 yards, and Boston College allowed close to six yards per carry and 231 yards.

Last week, Louisville ran for 331 yards in its 28-14 win over BC.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can Syracuse do what it does well, or can Boston College get its groove back and kickstart an offense that hit a brick wall?

A little of both, but Syracuse is playing like a team with the arrow pointing up – it’s playing well even in the losses – and Boston College is having too hard a time scoring.

Florida State vs Clemson Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

The running game has kicked it all in.

All of a sudden. the season has turned around with a three-game winning streak thanks to well over 200 yards on the ground in each one – with 365 yards last week against UMass – as the team plays with more and more confidence.

With the running comes the overall control – the offense is converting on third downs now. That was a big, big problem in September, but now everything is moving with 19-of-34 conversions over the last three games.

And then there’s the other team’s offense – it’s a mess.

Raise your hand if you thought by late September that Clemson would have the nation’s 115th-ranked offense and DJ Uiagalelei would be/might be benched?

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Clemson Will Win

Can the defense get it back?

That was the galling part about the 27-17 loss to Pitt. Besides being the first double-digit regular season defeat since the 2014 season, the one positive about this year went away as the D allowed over 400 yards for the first time.

But the talent and upside are still there as long as the offense is able to do something.

Syracuse is running wild on everyone – it only gained 165 yards on the Tigers. Georgia was held to 121, Georgia Tech was held to 95, and for the year, no one has hit the 170-yard mark on the ground.

Florida State can throw a little bit, but if it’s not running wild, it can’t win this.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Clemson’s offense hasn’t pushed past 21 points against any FBS team this year.

The defense will bail the team out by swarming all over the Seminole backfield and preventing the big, gashing runs that this offense can crank up, but it’s still going to be like pulling teeth to get the other side to put this away.

Virginia Tech vs Georgia Tech Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The running game has to keep on working.

The Hokies might have lost to Syracuse in a 41-36 shootout, but the ground attack had its best performance of the season with 260 yards thanks to a breakout 151-yard, three-touchdown day from freshman Malachi Thomas.

Now the Hokies need to do more of that, and then some.

Georgia Tech’s offense can’t move the chains. It’s last in the ACC in third down conversion, it doesn’t control the clock, and part of that comes from a run defense that’s hit-or-miss.

Virginia was able to run for 240 yards in its 48-40 win over the Yellow Jackets, and this week needs to be the Hokies’ turn.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Virginia Tech does a whole lot of things right, and then it loses.

It hasn’t beaten an FBS team since taking down Middle Tennessee back on September 11th, mainly because the offense is too inconsistent – the inefficient passing game has gone bye-bye at times over the last few weeks.

Even with last week’s outburst against Syracuse, the O struggles to get past 350 yards. That wasn’t the worst thing when the D was picking up the slack, but now teams are running wild on the front seven.

Pitt cranked up 208 yards against the Hokies, and then Syracuse took things to another level by ripping off 314. Georgia Tech might have lost to Virginia, but it ran for 270 yards.

What’s Going To Happen

Call this a bowl elimination game.

Virginia Tech is starting a brutal final run of four road games in the last five, but the schedule isn’t that bad. Georgia Tech is starting a nice stretch of three home games in the last five, but it has a hard ceiling of Notre Dame and Georgia at the end.

Both teams desperately need this, but Georgia Tech needs it more. At home, its offense and running game will be a bit stronger.
