Baylor vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

The passing game continues to be be terrific.

It might not bomb away like Texas Tech’s attack or be ultra-efficient like TCU’s, but it’s connecting on 70% of its throws with Blake Shapen doing a nice job of keeping everything moving.

It’ll all work for at least 200 yards against the Mountaineers, the running game will average well over four yards per carry, and everything else will be turned over to the run defense. The Bears are allowing fewer than 100 yards per game and they’re about to make West Virginia one-dimensional.

The Mountaineers are 2-0 when running for over 260 yards and 0-3 when going under. However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why West Virginia Will Win

Here comes JT Daniels.

The West Virginia ground game was a killer over the first month of the season, but it couldn’t get going in the 38-20 loss to Texas. Daniels threw for 253 yards in yet another steady performance.

This is when the air attack has to take a few more shots.

It’s a home game on a Thursday night, and it gets to go against a shaky Baylor secondary that isn’t getting enough help from the pass rush.

As long as Daniels isn’t turning the ball over and assuming he gets time, he can take on more of the workload.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Is West Virginia really the 10th-best team in the league?

Actually, it might be Oklahoma, but this is a chance for the Mountaineers to get back in the hunt for a bowl game after the 2-3 start.

Baylor is still talented enough to go on a run after the loss to Oklahoma State a few weeks ago, but the pass defense on the road will be a letdown. This is when a jacked up West Virginia team shows up and pulls off something big.

It’ll be tight until the end, but Daniels will come through with two fourth quarter scoring drives to get the desperately needed win.

LSU vs Florida Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

The Tigers are better than they showed in the 40-13 loss to Tennessee last week.

All of a sudden the run defense stopped working, the two turnovers didn’t help, and the game got away from the team fast. On the plus side, Jayden Daniels was solid. The former Arizona State quarterback bounced back from a bad day in the win over Auburn to throw for 300 yards against the Vols.

He should be able to bomb away on a Gator secondary that’s been relatively great considering it dealt with Utah’s Cameron Rising, Kentucky’s Will Levis, and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker. However, it allowed big yards to all of them, and now it’s Daniels’ turn.

Florida’s defense is the worst in the SEC in third down stops, the run defense isn’t getting anything done, and the offense has been way too inconsistent.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Florida Will Win

Here comes the Gator running game.

Tennessee has a solid ground attack, and LSU made it look next-level special last week allowing too many gashes and too much control as it ripped off 263 yards and two scores. In an ideal Florida world, that’s what it wants to do.

New head coach Billy Napier’s offense is designed to get the running backs on the move in open areas – yeah, everyone tries that, but Florida doesn’t really bash like it could – and it helps to have a quarterback who can run like Anthony Richardson.

The Gators have been resilient. They’ve been through a slew of tough battles and survived the short week of two games in six days with a workmanlike effort win over Missouri last Saturday.

Turnovers have been a wee bit of a problem, but the penalties haven’t been bad, the offensive line is giving everyone time to work, and unlike Daniels in his offensive system, Richardson is connecting on enough big downfield throws to matter.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Florida is starting to get that ground attack going. It averaged over seven yards per carry against Missouri, and it’s going to do just enough to offset the LSU offense that’s about to be a whole lot sharper than it was against the Vols.

LSU will do a far better job of controlling the clock, and it’ll bounce back big from the bad day, but the Gator combination of run, run, run and big pass play will overcome the rocky D.

Mississippi State vs Kentucky Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

He’s never going to get any Heisman love playing in a Mike Leach offense – no one seems to respect the stats like they should – and in a conference with Bryce Young, Hendon Hooker, Will Levis, and all the other star quarterbacks, but no one’s playing better than Will Rogers.

He’s winging it around 47 times a game, he hasn’t thrown an interception in the last three games and has 22 touchdown passes with just three picks on the season, and he’s making all the right decisions as the O seems to have slowed down for him.

Kentucky’s pass defense is fine, but South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler dinked dunked his way to a win last week hitting over 70% of his throws, and that cane a week after Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss threw for over 200 yards.

There isn’t any sort of a pass rush to bother Rogers, he’ll dink and dunk to his heart’s content, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Kentucky Will Win

Levis is pretty good, too.

He didn’t go against South Carolina with a foot problem, but he was able to practice enough this week and is ready to give it a go.

If the passing game isn’t clicking, this is when the running game has to finally step up.

The defense has been good enough, and the passing game is should be fine with Levis back, but the ground attack is averaging just 2.7 yards per carry and it hasn’t taken over like its should with the return of Chris Rodriguez a few weeks ago.

Mississippi State’s run defense was okay against a KJ Jefferson-less Arkansas, but it still allowed 241 yards. LSU was able to run without a problem on the Bulldog D that’s allowing 4.5 yards per carry overall, and this week the commitment to grinding it out will be there.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Neither team will run particularly well, but Mississippi State is doing a decent job of it lately. That’s just to kill time before Rogers can throw another  midrange completion.

The Bulldogs are better at doing what they do than Kentucky is of doing what it does. Levis is still hobbling, the O will give it away two times, and the offensive front won’t be effective enough.

Rogers will have something to do with it, too. The time of possession will matter here. UK needs to own the clock, and it won’t.

Texas State vs Troy Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

One of the funkiest teams going, Texas State doesn’t do anything consistently well, it doesn’t have a downfield passing attack, and the scoring wildly fluctuates, but it’s got a way of rising up and rocking.

All of a sudden, QB Layne Hatcher – who really is good – turned into Patrick Mahomes and the defense became a brick wall in a stunning 36-24 win over Appalachian State to kick the season into high gear. Now there are real, legitimate expectations to scramble for three more wins and bowl eligibility.

That means the takeaways have to continue. The D has generated 11 in the last five games, the offense needs to capitalize on every opportunity, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Troy Will Win

The Trojans are rolling.

They’ve won three straight since losing to Appalachian State on a magical Hail Mary helped by a great run defense, solid passing game, and just enough of a running game to get by.

The pass rush is dangerous enough to get to Hatcher on a regular basis, the run defense isn’t going to allow more than 100 yards, and the offense should be able to control the clock.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can Troy avoid a slew of turnovers to give Texas State the breaks it’ll need?

The Bobcats will keep it close with a good first half, but the Trojan D will settle in, the pass rush will start to take over, and somewhat quietly, the home team will look like it really might be the best team in the Sun Belt – or close to it.

Central Michigan vs Akron Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

So what’s going wrong?

This is supposed to be one of the best teams in the MAC, and the season can’t get going with a wildly inconsistent offense, too many turnovers, and no breaks whatsoever.

However, the defense is holding up. It’s having a few issues against the run, but it’s been great in the secondary over the past few games, the pass rush is good, and there are a ton of plays generated behind the line.

The Akron offensive line is about to give up more than ten tackles for loss against this Chippewa group.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Akron Will Win

Central Michigan is 1-5 with the arrow pointing down. Akron is 1-5, but it’s more interesting under new head coach Joe Moorhead.

The passing game is coming off a 418-yard day in the 55-34 loss to Ohio, the running game worked in the loss to Bowling Green the week before, and there are signs that this could eventually start to turn to the positive.

Can the D do anything to take the ball away? Central Michigan has turned it over 11 times in the last four games, and Akron needs the help because …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Akron secondary is about to get picked apart.

Accurate quarterbacks who can spread it around roll against the Zips, and CMU’s Daniel Richardson should finally perk back up after a rough month. He’ll throw for close to 300 yards as the Chippewas finally get a win over an FBS team.

Arkansas State vs Southern Miss Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Red Wolves haven’t been able to do anything on the ground, but James Blackman and the passing game have been fine, they’ll hit at least 250 yards against the Southern Miss defense, and then they have to get the pass rush going.

The Golden Eagles aren’t going to control the clock – they’re awful on third downs – partly because the offensive front gives up too many plays in the backfield. The ASU pass rush isn’t anything special, but the line will come up with tackles for loss.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The Arkansas State offensive line is scuffling.

It’s having its moments, but the running game isn’t doing much on a consistent basis and it’s not great against good pass rushing fronts. Southern Miss it bringing it in the backfield – it’s second in the Sun Belt and seventh in the nation averaging 3.6 sacks per game.

This isn’t a power-blocking ASU bunch. You can hammer on this USM D, but get wide or have a slow developing play and it’ll pounce.

It’s this simple for the Golden Eagles, though …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers. USM turned it over 12 times in the three losses and didn’t give it away in the two wins. Arkansas State’s defense doesn’t force enough mistakes with just four takeaways on the year.

The offenses will struggle – the running games won’t do much of anything. At home, the Southern Miss defense will be better.

Old Dominion vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs are throwing well enough to keep up.

There’s no running game, so the offense relies on Hayden Wolff to keep the offense going, and the defense takes care of the rest – it has to throw Coastal Carolina off of its rhythm.

As long as the takeaways are coming – five in the opener against Virginia Tech and nine in the last three games – and if the pass rush can bother Grayson McCall, this should be a fight.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Old Dominion really doesn’t have a running game, and that’s just part of the reason why it’s unable to control the clock.

The offense is miserable on third downs, it’s coming up with the second-fewest first downs in college football, and Coastal Carolina will take advantage of all of it.

The Chanticleers will own the clock, they won’t turn the ball over enough to matter, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Old Dominion will battle.

It’ll seem like Coastal Carolina is dominating the game, but the Monarchs will hang around and keep this close into the fourth quarter. They won’t be effective enough to take advantage of the opportunities, but they’ll make it fun.

Coastal Carolina will be too brutally efficient.

New Mexico vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

The defense is playing well enough to keep the New Mexico State offense from doing much of anything.

The Lobos might not have a brick wall up front, but they’re great at getting to the quarterback at forcing takeaways. Biggest of all, they can stop the run.

New Mexico State hasn’t thrown for 140 yards since the opener against Nevada, and the running game that worked so well against Hawaii a few weeks ago didn’t work against a miserable FIU D.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why New Mexico State Will Win

It’s not like New Mexico’s offense is humming.

It hasn’t pushed past 170 yards so far, it hasn’t hit 200 rushing yards against an FBS team, and overall it’s averaging just 260 yards per game. The big problem is a line that can’t keep defenses out of the backfield and isn’t generating enough of a push for the ground game.

The Lobos also have a turnover problem with five in the last two games and multiple giveaways in four of the six games. However …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico State doesn’t force enough mistakes to overcome the other problems.

Weird things sometimes happen in this in-state rivalry, but New Mexico has won three straight, the defense will be far better, and it’ll come up with a wee bit more offensive balance.

Points will be at a premium. Neither side can hit field goals, but New Mexico will get a few in the second half to get comfortable.

Kent State vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The Golden Flash offense has stated to perk up.

It wasn’t its normal FlashFast self against a nasty schedule, but it kicked back in once MAC play started with the passing game rolling for over 700 yards in the last two weeks. The O still goes 100 miles per hour, no one in the MAC is better at hitting the downfield passes, and everything is there to keep up with the Rocket attack.

Toledo does a lot of things right, but the passing attack is hit or miss, there aren’t a ton of plays happening behind the line, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Toledo Will Win

The Rockets are finally rolling.

There’s no dogging the blowout loss at Ohio State, but the missed putt against San Diego State and its awful offense was unforgivable. Even so, everything is working once MAC play started with the offense taking advantage of everything in easy wins over Central Michigan and Northern Illinois.

The O is just fine on its own, but it’s the defense that stepped up with seven takeaways in the last two games. It’ll give up a whole bunch of yards, but as long as the D is making plays, everything is fine.

Kent State has chilled on the turnovers, but it’s not above giving them up in bunches.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Really, who wants to have some fun?

Both defenses are a bit better than they get credit for, but that’s about to go out the window in this with both offenses going off right out of the gate.

Toledo can’t stop anyone from throwing, and Kent State will throw well. Kent State’s defense isn’t going to stop Toledo from doing what it wants with a good balance to go along with the explosion.

The Rockets will be just a wee bit better and more efficient at home.

Why North Texas Will Win

Louisiana Tech doesn’t run well enough to matter.

It had one big explosion in the win over Stephen F Austin, but that’s been it. It’ll try running on the soft Mean Green defensive front, but it needs to throw to win.

The passing yards will be there, but getting into a shootout with North Texas is a problem. The Mean Green ran on Florida Atlantic for 300 yards, threw for close to 700 yards in the previous two games, and they’ll find a way to get everything going.

As long as the running game works – and it should be able to on the Bulldog front – they’ll control this.

What’s Going To Happen

Both offenses will have some fun.

Louisiana Tech will wing it around for close to 300 yards, but North Texas will be a bit more balanced. When it runs well, it does better – it doesn’t want to make this about who can be more effective through the air.

Both teams will turn the ball over a few times, but at home the North Texas offense will be more effective and consistent.
