Texas Tech vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas has to do everything possible to somehow maintain control early on. That has to come with finally starting to grind it out on third downs against a Texas Tech defense that’s struggling to get off the field.

The Red Raiders were fine early on, but they’re getting lit up on third downs in Big 12 play, with Texas and TCU converting a whopping 19-of-28 chances.

Keeping the chains moving has been rough for the Jayhawks – it’s only converting 32% of its chances – but it has to get the short passing game going right away. They don’t have to bomb away like the Longhorns did, but the Red Raider defense is getting destroyed through the air in the Big 12 so far.

Kansas QB Jason Bean showed he was able get the passing attack going a bit against Duke a few weeks ago. The O has to come out swinging.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Texas Tech secondary has been awful since the Big 12 season kicked in. The Kansas pass defense is holding the Red Raiders’ beer – and it’s not just in the Big 12 campaign.

It’s not just that KU is getting hit very, very hard on the midrange throws – allowing teams to connect on close to 75% of their passes – but they’re getting bombed on.

Throw in Coastal Carolina and Duke to the dates with Baylor and Iowa State, and the Jayhawk secondary is giving up over 11 yards per throw with just one interception on the year.

Texas Tech is hardly perfect, but the passing game is working. However …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech QB Henry Colombi threw three touchdown passes in the blowout loss to Texas, but that’s been it for the scoring passes. That changes this week.

Kansas will put up just enough points to make the Red Raiders press, but it won’t move the ball well enough. The Texas Tech offense will open it up late.

BYU vs Baylor Game Preview

Why BYU Will Win

So where did it all go so wrong?

BYU was 5-0 and with a schedule really and truly have a dream of the College Football Playoff – it plays seven Power Five teams, Cincinnati plays two – but it got tripped up by Boise State because of one reason. Actually, four …

Four turnovers. That was an anomaly.

The Cougars turned it over twice in the win over Arizona State, but that was it for the giveaways. Normally, they’re air-tight with the ball, making up for a few issues by dominating the turnover margin – they were +8 before Boise State.

The passing game has been strong – Jaren Hall was back last week and threw for over 300 yards, the running game is physical, and the D has a great way of not breaking after bending.

However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Baylor Will Win

The turnovers.

Yeah, that wasn’t how BYU normally rolls, but give Boise State credit for forcing the mistakes in last week’s 26-17 win. Baylor is okay at taking the ball away – it forced ten turnovers so far – but it has yet to throw an interception and lost just four fumbles so far.

The Bears aren’t going to make the big mistakes at home.

BYU’s defense is solid, but it’s struggling on third downs. On the flip side, Dave Aranda’s Baylor D gets off the field fast with the Big 12’s more efficient pass defense.

Hold up against the run, don’t make mistakes, and it should all be fine.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s an interesting dead-even matchup between two teams with a whole lot on the line for a midseason non-conference game.

They’re both going to get bowl eligible at some point, but Baylor doesn’t have a sure-thing win the rest of the way – Texas at TCU, Oklahoma, at Kansas State, Texas Tech.

BYU has Idaho State on the slate as a backstop, but it still has a nasty run – at Washington State, Virginia, at Georgia Southern, at USC – still to deal with.

The Cougars aren’t going to crank up the ground game like they’ll want to, but they’ll throw well enough to stay in the battle. Baylor will be just a little bit sharper in the second half – it’ll be better overall on third downs when needed.

It’ll be very, very entertaining.

Oklahoma State vs Texas Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Very, very, very, very quietly, Oklahoma State is still undefeated and doing just about everything right as it just keeps on winning.

There might not be a giant national splashy win, but the Cowboys won at Boise State. They beat a Kansas State team that pushed Oklahoma, and they just ran over a Baylor squad that’s been getting a whole lot of credit for being okay.

And now it gets a Texas team that won’t be able to put the collapse against Oklahoma in the rearview mirror, no matter how much everyone says they’re moving on.

What’s Oklahoma State doing that’s so right? The defensive line is getting its mail in opposing backfields. That’s leading to a ton of third down stops and a whole lot of control in key moments.

On the other side, the offensive line is doing a terrific job in pass protection, even if the running game isn’t all that great. However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense has yet to open it up, and it might have to this week.

Oklahoma had to make a dramatic shift in quarterbacks that might end up changing the entire program to beat Texas last week. That’s because the Longhorn offense was amazing, with Casey Thompson throwing for 388 yards and five scores.

Bijan Robinson tore off a Heisman-caliber run, the offensive line has been good enough to live everything work, and the Big 12’s No. 1 offense has been ultra-efficient outside of the rough go late against OU.

Get up early this week, and make Oklahoma State rally. The Cowboys might have the ability to pull off a big comeback, but it hasn’t needed to do it yet.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Just how quickly can Texas get it back?

There’s no time for a hangover here with three road trips in the next four games. A loss doesn’t end any hope of getting another shot at Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship, but it would be a severe blow.

Oklahoma State can certainly throw, and the offense has been more than fine – this teams plays up or down to its competition – but the Texas attack will get its balance back fast.

The Cowboy defensive front and the pass rush will keep this game in range, but in third straight Big 12 thriller for the Longhorns, they’ll rise up at home on two big late drives.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Wisconsin vs Army Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

Outside of the top teams with the elite talent, few teams are better suited to deal with the Wisconsin slow style.

The Black Knights certainly don’t have the Power Five-caliber guys, but they do what they do, they hold the ball for forever, and they do it all really, really well.

Wisconsin has to win games through control. When things are working like they’re supposed to, it dominates the time of possession battle – Army leads the nation, holding the ball for over 40 minutes a game.

Wisconsin has to win the turnover battle. It’s 130th in the nation in turnover margin and Army is third in turnovers lost.

Wisconsin has to run the ball well. Army is third in the nation in run defense – UConn is the only team to come up with more than 48 yards, and it ran for 116.

This is a Badger team hanging by a thread. It’s coming off a dominant win over Illinois, but this 2-3 group can’t pull through the slightest bit of in-game adversity. The last thing it needs to deal with the knuckleball of an Army O.

However, on the flip side …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Wisconsin Will Win

There’s no team better suited to handle Army.

For a Badger squad that’s struggling overall, it does one thing really, really, really well.

Army’s offense and style can surprisingly shock and produce against just about anyone, but its No. 3 run defense produced against Georgia State, WKU, UConn, Miami University, and Ball State.

Wisconsin’s run defense?

It’s No. 1 in America, and it went against Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, Illinois, and Eastern Michigan.

The Badgers just held Illinois to 93 yards of total offense and 26 on the ground. It’s an ultra-disciplined group that should be able to force several 3rd-and-long situations – a killer for this Army attack.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Size isn’t an issue for this Army defensive front seven. There’s just enough bulk to avoid being blasted early, but this is about to be a grind.

The little that Army uses its passing game won’t work at all outside of one deep shot out of the blue, and the running game will only have a few decent drives.

Over the long haul of the 60 minutes, the Badgers will pound and pound and pound, they’re not going to take any unnecessary chances, and they’ll rely on best run defense in college football to get out of this dangerous game alive.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Iowa vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

There’s zero pressure on Purdue.

Of course, there’s always pressure on a team coming off a dull home loss to team like Minnesota, but this is one of those turn-it-loose games against an Iowa team that now has the No. 2 ranking spotlight shining very, very bright.

Is Iowa really the second-best team in college football?

It beat a mediocre Indiana, the O didn’t do much of anything in the win over Iowa State, beating Maryland now doesn’t seem like any big deal, and Penn State lost its starting quarterback to an undisclosed injury and couldn’t stall long enough to hang on.

Purdue has the passing game. No matter who’s under center, the yards are there, the team doesn’t get flagged enough to matter, and the defense has been shockingly amazing so far.

The Iowa offense is … fine. Actually, it’s not – we’re all just being nice here. It’s 119th in the nation and dead last in the Big Ten in total yards.

Don’t be shocked if Purdue turns out to be every bit as nasty to score on as Penn State was, however, there’s one very, very, very big problem …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Iowa Will Win

This Iowa defense is absolutely ridiculous when it comes to taking the ball away.

The running game is a bag of meh considering how good RB Tyler Goodson is. Give all credit to Spencer Petras for coming up with that throw to finally get over the Penn State hump, but … meh.

Who needs an offense when your defense forces a bazillion turnovers a game?

The Hawkeyes came up with four against Penn State, seven against Maryland, four against Iowa State, and three against Indiana. That’s it. That’s part of the No. 2-ranked baked cake. That’s what this team does.

Iowa has 20 takeaways on the year. Middle Tennessee is second with 17, three teams have 16, Cincinnati has 15, and the rest of America has 14 or fewer.

To put this into perspective, Georgia Southern led the nation last season with 26 – and it played 13 games.

Oh, by the way, Purdue is dead last in the nation in takeaways with just two. There’s no prayer of beating Iowa without winning the turnover margin, but …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue is going to make this a far bigger fight than you might think.

The defense really is just that good – DE George Karlaftis will be the best player on the field – but the offense will turn it over twice, and that will be more than enough.

The Hawkeyes will take advantage of the mistakes to overcome an offense that will get one big run, but that’s about it. With this defense, the Iowa O won’t need to take any chances.

Rutgers vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

Rutgers is in desperate need of a breather after dealing with Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State.

Northwestern will be fresh air.

It’s all a work in progress for the Scarlet Knight team that’s got a whole lot of nice parts, but it doesn’t have the explosion to keep up when the other side gets into an offensive groove.

The defense is decent enough, it’s great on third downs, and overall, the team – usually – doesn’t beat itself, the Ohio State game aside.

Meanwhile, Northwestern did a complete about-face from its 2020 version.

The defensive front can’t do anything to get into the backfield, there are too many turnovers, there’s NOTHING happening against the run – at least against the decent teams – overall, the team can’t control the clock or the tempo like it needs to. However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Northwestern Will Win

Rutgers isn’t getting enough out of its offensive line.

The offense isn’t going to get on the field and put up 21 in a blink, and it’s going to have to manufacture ways to generate points.

After two weeks off to contemplate its place in the Big Ten world after getting annihilated by Nebraska, Northwestern has to start by not turning the ball over.

To be fair to the run defense, it couldn’t stop Michigan State or Nebraska – at all – and it was still in the Duke game late despite the overall defensive struggles. Again, Rutgers doesn’t have the offense to hit the 500-yard mark to run away with this, but …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Northwestern really, really doesn’t have the offense to do this.

Rutgers got down fast against Ohio State, and Michigan State kept hitting bombs last week – that’s not the Wildcat offense at all.

Basically, both teams need to play a low-scoring game that comes down to defense, doing the little things right, and manufacturing a few key plays and then taking advantage of the opportunities.

Rutgers does that better.

Nebraska vs Minnesota Game Preview

Why Nebraska Will Win

Now what do the Gophers do?

Mohamed Ibrahim was one of the Big Ten’s best backs, but he went down in the Ohio State game with an Achilles tendon injury. In came Trey Potts, he ran for 552 yards and six touchdowns in five games, and now he’s out for the year.

Minnesota doesn’t have the passing game to make up the running game if the freshman backs aren’t able to fill the void, and it doesn’t have the explosion to keep up if and when the Huskers start hitting the home runs with the passing game and when QB Adrian Martinez gets free in the second left.

The offense is working, and the team has been really, really close to a wonderful season, but …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Minnesota Will Win

Forgive the complete lack of substantive research and analysis on this, but …

Nebraska just doesn’t seem to know how to win when it has the chance.

You could see it on head coach Scott Frost’s face right as the Michigan game was ending. His team had the monster W right there for the taking, and once again, it couldn’t get it done.

It’s good enough to roll in a few blowouts here and there, but it screwed up just enough to matter against Illinois. It couldn’t quite rise up when the chances were there against Oklahoma, the Michigan State game came down to who blinked first late, and it was all there for the taking against Michigan, and …

Loss, loss, loss, loss.

There are a whole lot of strong parts to the improving Huskers, but the special teams are just okay – to be kind – the O doesn’t move well enough when Martinez isn’t doing something amazing, and there isn’t enough of a pass rush to get through the giant Minnesota offensive front.

However …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

YOU try to guess which Minnesota team shows up.

Is it the one that fought through its worst day of the season running the ball to beat Purdue, or is it the one that didn’t get off the bus in a stunning loss to Bowling Green, or is it the one that totally stoned Colorado on the road?

The Gopher defensive stats are great, but it also helps that there weren’t any teams on the slate after Ohio State that could run the ball.

There won’t be anything spectacular about it, but Nebraska will come up with a very good, very measured, and very business-like performance.

It will get two big pass plays to open things up a bit, the run defense will be just fine, and the season that desperately needs a win at this point to keep bowl hopes alive will march on.

Nebraska will have the chance in a close game, and finally,  it will win.

Michigan State vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

It’s been a struggle for Indiana.

QB Michael Penix hasn’t been healthy – and he’s banged up and questionable coming in to this week – the team hasn’t been able to find the same magic, and it’s had the rough luck play facing Iowa, Cincinnati, and Penn State.

The offense not only hasn’t been great against the better teams, but turnovers have been a massive problem with nine in the three losses – and none in the two wins.

Michigan State hasn’t been a takeaway machine, but it’s been able to come up with eight over the last four games. More importantly, the offense has found its explosion.

Kenneth Walker might be the best running back in college football over the first half of the season, WR Jalen Nailor is coming off a monster performance against Rutgers, and overall, this isn’t your normal Michigan State.

However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Indiana Will Win

Give IU a little credit.

Maybe Iowa really is the No. 2 team in America. Maybe Cincinnati really is the No. 3 team. Maybe Michigan State is just a notch below the elite and about to deal with a rested team that’s a lot stronger than it showed so far.

Even with the issues of a 2-3 start, the Hoosiers might catch a couple of breaks here. Again, it had two weeks off, and Michigan State gets its time off next week with one eye possibly on the Michigan showdown.

The other is the potential to grind this down. IU isn’t Wisconsin when it comes to the time of possession battle, but it holds the ball for an eternity compared to Michigan State.

If the Hoosier defense can limit the big plays and do a decent job on third downs – the D is third in the Big Ten in third down stops – it has a shot.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Michigan State keep the focus for one more week before getting a little time off?

This is hardly a perfect Spartan team, and it’s going to sputter a bit more offensively than it might like – it’s desperation time for a Hoosier team that gets Ohio State, at Maryland, and at Michigan next – but the lines will take over.

The Michigan State pass rush will be overwhelming. Indiana won’t be able to run the ball well enough to make a difference, and too many sacks and tackles for loss will crush promising drives.
