Iowa vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

Well look at Air Iowa and it’s fun ‘n’ gun attack rolling up close to 400 yards and 33 points on Northwestern.

As was pointed out before last week’s game, yes, the Iowa offense is awful, but in the first seven games it went up against five of the best defenses in college football, one of the top three defenses in the FCS, and played Nevada in crazy rainstorm.

Northwestern’s defense is the cure for all offenses, and Purdue’s defense isn’t awful, but the Iowa O won’t be stopped cold and the D should be able to be the Iowa D – don’t expect much from the Purdue ground game.

This should be Iowa’s speed all the way around, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Purdue Will Win

Get that passing game going early and see what happens.

Yes, Iowa is fifth in the nation in total defense, and yes, you have to budget in a few turnovers, but it’s possible to throw on this bunch.

Ohio State didn’t have too many problems, and Rutgers was able to come up with enough through the air to make the game somewhat interesting. It’s mostly about completion percentage – just keep everything moving.

QB Aidan O’Connell had a rough run pianist Wisconsin two weeks ago, but he’s going to throw it at least 40 times, and he’s going to crank up close to 300 yards – that’s what the Purdue offense does.

As long as he gets time to keep hitting the midrange passes, the offense can work against this brick wall of a D.

And yes, the Iowa offense might be okay, but it’s still not great. Get up fast and that might be it.

What’s Going To Happen

The Purdue defense isn’t as good as most of the versions Iowa has seen so far, but it’s great at generating third down stops, the offense is terrific at controlling the clock, and that might be enough to pull this off at home.

Having two weeks off to rest up and get ready won’t hurt, either.

Iowa vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

There’s zero pressure on Purdue.

Of course, there’s always pressure on a team coming off a dull home loss to team like Minnesota, but this is one of those turn-it-loose games against an Iowa team that now has the No. 2 ranking spotlight shining very, very bright.

Is Iowa really the second-best team in college football?

It beat a mediocre Indiana, the O didn’t do much of anything in the win over Iowa State, beating Maryland now doesn’t seem like any big deal, and Penn State lost its starting quarterback to an undisclosed injury and couldn’t stall long enough to hang on.

Purdue has the passing game. No matter who’s under center, the yards are there, the team doesn’t get flagged enough to matter, and the defense has been shockingly amazing so far.

The Iowa offense is … fine. Actually, it’s not – we’re all just being nice here. It’s 119th in the nation and dead last in the Big Ten in total yards.

Don’t be shocked if Purdue turns out to be every bit as nasty to score on as Penn State was, however, there’s one very, very, very big problem …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Iowa Will Win

This Iowa defense is absolutely ridiculous when it comes to taking the ball away.

The running game is a bag of meh considering how good RB Tyler Goodson is. Give all credit to Spencer Petras for coming up with that throw to finally get over the Penn State hump, but … meh.

Who needs an offense when your defense forces a bazillion turnovers a game?

The Hawkeyes came up with four against Penn State, seven against Maryland, four against Iowa State, and three against Indiana. That’s it. That’s part of the No. 2-ranked baked cake. That’s what this team does.

Iowa has 20 takeaways on the year. Middle Tennessee is second with 17, three teams have 16, Cincinnati has 15, and the rest of America has 14 or fewer.

To put this into perspective, Georgia Southern led the nation last season with 26 – and it played 13 games.

Oh, by the way, Purdue is dead last in the nation in takeaways with just two. There’s no prayer of beating Iowa without winning the turnover margin, but …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue is going to make this a far bigger fight than you might think.

The defense really is just that good – DE George Karlaftis will be the best player on the field – but the offense will turn it over twice, and that will be more than enough.

The Hawkeyes will take advantage of the mistakes to overcome an offense that will get one big run, but that’s about it. With this defense, the Iowa O won’t need to take any chances.

Why Iowa Will Win

Power, power, power.

There are a whole ton of new starting parts on both sides of the ball for the Hawkeyes, but QB Spencer Petras has the arm and the receiving corps to bomb away from the start. To start, though, Iowa can keep this simple …

Power away with the running game behind a terrific offensive line.

Left tackle Aleric Jackson leads a strong veteran front with a good rotation of backs to blast away on a suspect Boilermaker defensive front. Get that going, and the Iowa receiving corps should be able to hit home runs.

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why Purdue Will Win

Does Iowa have the secondary to hold up against the passing game that’s showing up to Ross-Ade on Saturday afternoon? Sort of, but not really.

Iowa always has a standard on defense that it always plays up to, but three starters are gone from the secondary, and there are just enough wholesale changes on the front seven to be a concern.

With Rondale Moore opting back in to what would’ve been a strong receiving corps – even though he’s out this week – here comes the fun. Jack Plummer is a veteran passer, the O line is full of experience, and the passing game will be fantastic.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

How much does it matter that Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm is out after testing positive for the coronavirus? Brian Brohm will step in and be the acting head man – he’ll be just fine – but can the Boilermakers hold up against the Iowa fronts? Can Iowa hold down the high-powered Purdue passing game?

Purdue has won two of the last three in the series, but Iowa will come up with a sharp day with a good enough offensive balance to dominate the tempo and the time of possession battle. The Boilermakers won’t be on the field enough.
