Navy Battles Air Force to the End

Air Force Clears the First Hurdle for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy

Contact/Follow @Sean or @MWCWire

It wasn’t pretty, but Air Force sends Navy back to Annapolis with an L. The Falcons jumped out to an early 10-0 lead on a big touchdown strike from Haaziq Daniels to David Cormier, and then a field goal from the steady leg of Matthew Dapore on their first two drives. Nothing came easy for Air Force from there as a game Mids defense showed why they feature one of the nations most stout run defenses.

The game itself was a microcosm of Haaziq Daniel’s day. A roller coaster with some fantastic highs and forgettable lows.  Sandwiched between a beautiful touchdown bomb to Cormier and a game winning engineered drive were multiple fumbles and an errant pitch.

Daniels and the offense were resilient though. Brad Roberts delivered another strong performance, saving his best for when they needed it most. Most notably though, the defense played four physical quarters that ultimately helped deliver on a 13-10 victory.

It may have been ugly, but that’s how a lot of the Academy football matchups go. Coming out on the winning end is all that matters in these contests. Singing second means the Falcons are still in the running for their primary objective: a shot at the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy. With this win against Navy, their November 5th game versus Army will present an opportunity to bring that CiC Trophy back to Colorado Springs for the holidays.

College Football Rankings: 1 To 131 After Week 4

College football rankings from CollegeFootballNews.com from 1 to 131 after Week 4

College Football News 2022 college football rankings after Week 4 for all 131 teams with results and who’s up next week.

It’s our motto with the college football rankings that we try to never stray from: respect the results.

That’s a problem now.

Really, Tulane should be ranked ahead of Kansas State, who should be ranked ahead of Oklahoma, but Tulane just lost to Southern Miss, who lost to …

It doesn’t work.

Just trust us when we say we get it. There are a lot of insane inconsistencies and wild moves, especially for some teams that were great this weekend and should’ve moved up.

All of the bizarre upsets and twists in a fun start to the college football season changed up everything.

For example, do we think Texas A&M and Oklahoma would beat James Madison? Almost certainly. Would we pick the Aggies and Sooners over the Dukes? Yeah.

Is James Madison unbeaten after beating the Appalachian State team that beat Texas A&M a few weeks ago in College Station? Yeah. Did it destroy the Middle Tennessee team that just trucked Miami? Yeah.

To get this ultra-pretentious ramble there faster, it’s simple. Some – not all – of the unbeatens get a ton of respect in the Week 4 college football rankings.

This will all get cleared up over the next few weeks as more results come in, so PLEASE don’t get into too much of a twist if your team was impressive on Saturday but dropped; that meant other parts of the overall puzzle changed.

With all of that in mind, here are the wacky and wild Week 4 college football rankings.

College Football Hot Seat Coaches Top 10 Ranking: Week 4

Which college football coaches are on the hot seat? Which ones have to win now, or else, after Week 4?

Now that Geoff Collins is reportedly out at Georgia Tech, who are ten other coaches on the hot seat after Week 4 of the college football season?

What 12-Team Playoff Would Look Like
AP Rankings | Coaches Poll

Herm Edwards was done after last week and Scott Frost was whacked after his team was pasted by Georgia Southern. To absolutely no one’s surprise, Georgia Tech’s Geoff Collins appears to be next …

He got the rare break of time. Everyone knew Georgia Tech needed a few years to undergo a giant pivot into the modern age of college football offenses – although, I’ll be the first to profess true and undying love for the triple option and its place in the world – but it never got going with a 10-28 run in just over three years.

So who’s next? Who are the coaches who desperately need a win?

We do College Football Coach Hot Seat a bit differently. First, there are the five who almost certainly won’t get fired, but could desperately use a big win soon. And then there are the five who are in big, big trouble if something doesn’t turn around fast.

Starting with five who could use something positive …

5 college football coaches who had better win now, or else

Five College Football Coaches Who Won’t Get Fired, But … WIN

5. Steve Sarkisian, Texas

Up Next: West Virginia

One wild 37-34 OT loss to Texas Tech shouldn’t mean the world – that’s a good Red Raider team and it was on the road – but there can’t be a slide.

And that’s the problem – everyone is expecting Texas to melt down just like it did last year after the Caleb Williams touchdown run to kickstart the Oklahoma comeback win.

There’s no easy out in the Big 12 this year, and it doesn’t get easier going forward.

West Virginia could absolutely win this weekend in Austin. No pressure, but if that happens, Oklahoma, Iowa State, at Oklahoma State, at Kansas State will seem very, very scary.

4. Mack Brown, North Carolina

Up Next: Virginia Tech

He’s been recruiting well, his teams have been interesting, and …

24-18 in just over three years. That’s not exactly setting the world on fire.

Obviously different circumstances – North Carolina isn’t under the NCAA cloud that Arizona State is – but Herm Edwards was sort of a similar outside-the-box older hire, and he went 25-17 in his first 42 games before going 1-3 to finish out his era.

The Tar Heels just suffered their first loss of the season in a 45-32 shootout with Notre Dame. They should’ve lost at Appalachian State, and they got pushed by Georgia State.

After a home game against Virginia Tech, UNC play four games in five on the road and still has to deal with NC State to close out the regular season.

Everything should be fine – there’s no Clemson to deal with – but losing to the Hokies this week would be a problem.

3. Mike MacIntyre, FIU

Up Next: at New Mexico State

There are no expectations in a rough situation, and there’s no concern about anything that happens in his first year of a massive turnaround.

FIU has a close-call win over Bryant from the FCS world, got rocked by Texas State, and last week lost to WKU 73-0.

However, at New Mexico State, UConn, at Charlotte are all up in the next month, and all would be seen as sure-thing wins for just about anyone else.

FIU doesn’t need to necessarily start winning – again, this is going to take time. It would be nice to get a few positives, though, considering where this season appears to be heading.

2. Michael Desormeaux, Louisiana

Up Next: South Alabama

The former star quarterback and current favorite son of the Ragin’ Cajuns had a huge task trying to keep everything going after what Billy Napier was able to put together. However, even with some big personnel losses, this was still expected to be a great team that could be in the Sun Belt title hunt.

Everything looked fine over the first two games, and then came the strange loss at Rice when everything stopped, and then came the ultimate sin – a 21-17 loss last week to ULM.

He’s just getting started, but there aren’t a slew of sure-thing wins left. It’s going to be tough to get four more and get bowl eligible.

1. Mel Tucker, Michigan State

Up Next: at Maryland

This might get ugly in a hurry.

After a fantastic 2021, the program made a massive commitment to Tucker, the needle was pointing up, and it seemed like the glitches were fixed. Everything started out well against Western Michigan and Akron, and then came two massive problems.

It’s not that Michigan State last to Washington and Minnesota, it’s that it didn’t look like it belonged on the same field with either one. A late rally made the 39-28 final score against the Huskies look better than it was, but the 34-7 loss to the Gophers wasn’t even that close.

Tucker and the Spartans had better win at Maryland with Ohio State, Wisconsin, at Michigan, and at Illinois to follow and at Penn State to close.

Six wins and a bowl game aren’t a given now.

NEXT: 5 College Football Hot Seat Coaches Who Need To Win Now, Or Else

<--nextpage-->

College Football Hot Seat Coaches: Win NOW, Or Else

These five coaches will likely hang on to their respective jobs with an okay final record, but they all need to put together a strong string of wins NOW.

5. Jeff Hafley, Boston College

Up Next: Louisville

Boston College fans were getting bored with seven-win seasons. They wanted more, they wanted to break through, they wanted to be a contender – all very reasonable.

Hafley went 6-5 in the COVID year – great. He went 6-6 last season – okay.

Now Boston College is on a rough 1-5 run since the end of last year, and here’s the really rough part – Boston College only has one win over a team that finished with a winning record since Hafley took over.

The Eagles got rocked by Florida State. They started with a loss to Rutgers, lost to a bad Virginia Tech squad, and got a win over Maine from the FCS.

Lose to Louisville this week, and with Clemson and at Wake Forest to follow – and with road games at NC State and Notre Dame ahead – there’s a problem.

4. Eliah Drinkwitz, Missouri

Up Next: Georgia

Welcome to life in the SEC.

If Nathaniel Peat is able to hang on to the ball for just a half-step longer, Mizzou beats Auburn on the road, it’s 3-1, and with Vanderbilt and New Mexico State still to play, a bowl game would’ve seemed close to being a lock.

Peat fumbled, Missouri lost 17-14 in overtime, and up next is Georgia, then Florida on the road. then Vanderbilt and at South Carolina in a bit of a break, then Kentucky, then at Tennessee. NMSU is a breather before closing with Arkansas, but at this point, it’s going to take something special to get to six wins.

There’s a chance 12 of the 14 SEC teams are now eligible. It will be dicey if Mizzou joins Vanderbilt as the ones without an invite.

Speaking of that ending.

3. Bryan Harsin, Auburn

Up Next: LSU

Yeah, Auburn got the win, and yeah, the team is 3-1 now – you are what your record says you are. However, the offense isn’t moving, the Penn State loss was a disaster, and there’s a whole lot of pain and suffering on the horizon.

At 3-1 is seems like a bowl game is a lock, right? Find the three wins out of LSU, at Georgia, at Ole Miss, Arkansas, at Mississippi State, Texas A&M, WKU, at Alabama.

However, if Auburn is sick of him, there’s one place that might like him back …

2. Andy Avalos, Boise State

Up Next: San Diego State

Really? Losing to UTEP 27-10? Boise State?

This is the program that seemingly went decades without losing to anyone other than someone amazing, and now it’s losing to … UTEP?

Bryan Harsin went 69-19 during his seven years at Boise State. The program won three Mountain West championships, two other divisions titles, went 9-4 with a bowl win in a 2015 season when it didn’t take the division, and was 5-2 in the strange COVID year of 2020.

Former Boise State LB Andy Avalos stepped in and went 7-5 last season. Okay, but the 2-2 start to this year isn’t okay, especially after that loss to …

UTEP.

San Diego State, Fresno State, at Air Force. This is a critical three-game stretch. Win those, and all will be right with the world.

1. Karl Dorrell, Colorado

Up Next: at Arizona

The guy knows how to coach – he was the Pac-12 Coach of the Year just two seasons ago, and he won it back in 2005, too.

He was fine at UCLA. Not amazing, but the 35-27 run wasn’t bad. He was a strong assistant in the pros, he knows how to run an offense, and there’s one level of thought that this brutal 2022 is a step back to get the new parts time to potentially take a giant leap forward.

That, and the $11.4 million buyout is a bit too rich to get rid of him before the end of the season.

Colorado has’t even been close in the four losses to TCU, Air Force, Minnesota, and last week against UCLA. Making things worse is the lack of a true lightweight game the rest of the way.

Going to Arizona is close, maybe getting Cal at home is winnable, and hosting Arizona State on October 29th is a shot, but 0-12 is a real possibility with the way the team is playing after four weeks.

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 4

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 4 of the college football season?

The bowl projections get weirder than ever for three reasons.

First, who’s going to be there from the Group of Five who’ll be worthy of a New Year’s Six bowl spot? Second, there are going to be way too many eligible teams, and third, who the heck is that fourth team going to be in the College Football Playoff?

It’s a snapshot of what this all might be, along with an added bowl to handle the overflow.

Sorry if this take sucks, it’s not my fault …

I still haven’t recovered from the shocking and hurtful comments made by North Carolina QB Drake Maye.

(NSFW warning …)

“Whether you want to admit it or not, growing up in Carolina, you’re gonna be a Carolina fan. Some people may say (NC) State, but really people who go to State just can’t get into Carolina.”

Oh sure, he walked it back, and he was coached to say all the right things, but that bell can’t be unrung in just a tweet.

There needs to be grief counseling, there needs to be sensitivity training, there needs to be a total culture overhaul.

How this monster is still allowed to roam the streets, much less play college football – and how Mack Brown and University of North Carolina president Peter Hans are able to keep their jobs after bringing this filth to such a fine institution – is beyond me.

Fortunately, God punished the heathen by allowing those good Catholics from Notre Dame – who would never, ever spout anything disparaging about an opponent – to enjoy some semblance of an offense for a week.

You really think THAT was a rip? I’d like to introduce you to a certain Jumpman logo from that school who took trash talk to a legendary art form.

I think … dogging your rival is the entire point of being a college sports fan.

I know … after a lifetime of living and working in and around the college space, I’ve heard them all. I can do this forever.

If you can’t get into college, you can go to (insert rival here).

You went to (insert school unnecessarily mentioned in random conversation here)? Okay, I’ll speak slower.

Why is it THE Ohio State University? Because THE America’s Safety School doesn’t fit as well on a t-shirt (or, the alternative dig, because Ohio State students need to constantly be reminded they were accepted into a college).

How do you spot someone who went to Michigan? By the trail of Ivy League rejection letters. What do all Michigan alumni have in the closet? 157 things that say Michigan and a wistful Northwestern sweatshirt tucked in the back.

Why do people go to USC? Because the University of Spoiled Children are too lazy to spell UCLA.

What does UCLA stand for? University of Common Little Adults.

What does Texas A&M stand for? A 17-14 loss to Appalachian State. (Rim shot. Or insert the latest home loss, playing on the tradition of the students standing at the ready in case they need to enter the game. I’ve heard it used by a Longhorn to an Aggie, and bad things happened from there.)

I believe … being able to set off a Texas fan by turning a hand sign upside down might be the funniest thing in all of American society.

I think … if you’re actually offended by any of that, or especially what Drake Maye said …

I know … that’s on you, and …

I believe … you’re too boring to be a part of a functional planet, much less the fun of college sports.

I think … Drake Maye has been terrific so far completing 69% of his passes for 1,231 yards and 16 touchdowns with a pick and a rushing score. He hit Notre Dame for five touchdowns.

I know … North Carolina once again seems like it has a strong team under Mack Brown, but it sort of doesn’t.

I believe … North Carolina continues to be an underappreciated college football quarterback factory.

I think … I’m going to miss the edit on his name at about a 32% clip as my computer continues to want to change Drake Maye into Drake May.

I know … I’m annoyed, because I can’t really ask my computer to learn the spelling since I’ll need to use the word May, too.

I believe … if you have the Curb Your Enthusiasm music going through your head on a constant loop, all stupid daily problems become whimsical.

[lawrence-related id=551704]

I think … James Madison has to be ranked ahead of Texas A&M.

I know … Texas A&M was ranked 17th in the latest polls. James Madison received 11 votes from the Coaches and 4 from the AP.

I believe … if Team A is unbeaten and it beat Team B on the road, and Team B beat Team C – and Team A TRUCKED Team D that blew out Team E that Team C just barely got past – then of course you put Team A over Team C in the rankings. It’s just not that hard.

I think … people’s brains melt when they have to actually think about how to rank things properly.

I know … people will do anything and will buy into anything that conforms to their familiar beliefs, even when they’re probably wrong.

I believe … very few people who vote in college football polls take the time to try putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. There needs to be a way this crazy sports takes its playoff system out of the hands of a panel of judges. Which is why …

What 12-Team Playoff Would Look Like
Hot Seat Coach Rankings | AP Rankings | Coaches Poll

I think … the 12-team College Football Playoff idea would make this season a whole lot more fun than it already is with more teams, more bases, and more casual fans involved.

I know … it wouldn’t diminish the rivalry games and big matchups like the old timers think it would. On the flip side, an expanded College Football Playoff will make them bigger.

I believe … 15 minutes after the expanded College Football Playoff is in place, everyone will wonder why it wasn’t done a gajillion years sooner.

I think … the Ohio State all-black uniforms were sad. It looked like Utah was playing Wisconsin.

I know … the Ohio State normal kits are fantastic.

I believe … in 99% of all cases – Ohio State being in the 1% – if you need an outfit change to make your team better at a sport, you already know your answer.

I think … DJ Uiagalelei has – potentially, and with work – No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick upside and talent.

I know … I’m in a room by myself with people who agree with that assessment.

I believe … he’s going to be one of those quarterbacks who rises up and rocks with one more year of seasoning. Some guys just need the time and the live reps for everything to slow down to a stop. EVERY senior college quarterback remarks about how night-and-day easier the game becomes at 22 than it was at 19.

I think … a quarterback mistakenly stepping out of the back of the end zone for a safety isn’t particularly interesting or embarrassing.

I know … I’m in a DJ Uiagalelei Is Great lonely place with that.

I believe … field position and tactics-wise, it’s not necessarily the worst thing in the world to suck up the 2 and flip the field back around. Obviously you don’t want that, but it’s not necessarily a killer unless you lose by one like San Francisco did.

I think … Kansas being 4-0 is one of the best college football stories in a long time.

I know … Lance Leipold is one of those head coaches who, if all things were equal, could take his and beat your and yours and beat his.

I believe … Nebraska, Arizona State, Georgia Tech, and others will come calling soon.

I think … the Arizona State job is better than the Nebraska job.

I know … recruiting area, market size in an NIL world, and overall expectations with time to build will matter.

I believe … I can’t get there with Georgia Tech being as big of a sleeping giant as Arizona State, but there are a whole lot of positives about that gig to flip it around sooner than Geoff Collins was able to.

I think … I have no freaking clue how to make Nebraska amazing again.

I know … Notre Dame, USC, Texas, Tennessee, Miami, Florida State, Michigan – it’s next to impossible to recapture the magic like fans remember.

I believe … it takes a whole lot of dumb luck to hit the perfect blend of the right coach, the right administration, and the right infrastructure. There was a time when it was hardly a given that Alabama and Ohio State would become this.

I think … I’m loving this start to the 2022 season. Bring on more upsets, more twists, and more zaniness.

I know … how this all ends, though.

I believe … SEC powerhouse vs Ohio State for the national championship. And America yawns.

I think … I know it’s all going to be okay.

I know … I believe it’s all going to be okay.

I believe … I think it’s all going to be okay.

The expanded College Football Playoff is coming. It’s not quite sure when, but we could really use it this year.

When it gets going, the top four teams get a bye, the higher seeds get the home campus advantage in the first round, and the ensuing rounds go to the bowls – scroll down to the bottom of this for the ins and outs of how it will all work.

Here’s how it would likely project as things stand right now and if they expanded this year – which they’re not.

Top Four Projected Seeds After Week 3
 (top four conference champions)

1. Georgia (SEC): Sugar Bowl
2. Ohio State (Big Ten): Rose Bowl
3. Clemson (ACC): Orange Bowl
4. USC (Pac-12): Cotton Bowl

At-Large Seeds

12. Cincinnati (AAC Champion) at
5. Alabama (SEC)

11. Penn State (Big Ten) at
6. Michigan (Big Ten)

10. NC State (ACC) at
7. Kentucky (SEC)

9. Tennessee (SEC) at
8. Oklahoma State (Big 12 Champion)

Top Three Teams That Would Be Left Out
Ole Miss (SEC), Utah (Pac-12), Oregon (Pac-12)

Here’s how it’s going to work (this comes from the College Football Playoff):

1. The 12 teams will be the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee (no minimum ranking requirement), plus the six highest-ranked teams not included among the six highest-ranked conference champions.

2. The ranking of the teams will continue to be done by a selection committee whose size, composition, and method of selection will remain substantially unchanged.

3. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye.

4. The other eight teams will play in the first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8.

5. The model allows for first-round games to be played on either the second or third weekend in December in a way that best accommodates the format and the participating teams, with at least 12 days between the conference championship games and the first-round games. The Management Committee would make the final determination of the calendar.

6. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four quarterfinal games and two Playoff Semifinal games would be played in bowls on a rotating basis.

7. The national championship game will continue to be played at a neutral site.

8. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be assigned to quarterfinals bowls on selection day in ranking order, and in consideration of current contract bowl relationships if those bowls are selected for the rotation. For example, if the Pac-12 champion were ranked #1, the Big Ten champion were ranked #3, and the Rose Bowl were a quarterfinal site, the Pac-12 champion would be assigned to the Rose Bowl and the Big Ten champion would be assigned elsewhere.

9. With the four highest-ranked champions assigned to quarterfinal games in bowls, the opponent from first-round game winners will be assigned by the selection committee based on the bracket.

10. The higher seeds would receive preferential placement in the Playoff Semifinal games.

SP+ PROJECTION: Air Force by 19.9

FEI PROJECTION: Air Force by 14.8

PARKER FLEMMING PROJECTIONAir Force win probability 87.90% (38.95-22.80)

It’s Navy week! While Air Force grabbed their first win in Conference play last week, it won’t matter much if they stumble against their rivals from Annapolis. Saturdays game against Navy marks the first of two games that Troy Calhoun’s squad will have to navigate if they want to facilitate the long awaited return of the Commander-in-Chief’s trophy back to Colorado Springs.

With Wyoming in the drivers seat for the Mountain division, there is still a lot of football to be played that could change that landscape. Conversely, should Air Force lose to Navy this week, their season takes a very devastating blow very early, as it would eliminate them from contention for the coveted CiC Trophy. Suffice to say, there is a lot of pressure on Air Force to deliver in Saturday mornings tilt with the Mids.

Navy struggled out of the gates, losing to Delaware from the FCS, before getting pummeled by Memphis in their second game. Week three proved to be the charm though, Navy battled to earn a very nice victory over a tough East Carolina team last week.

Both teams want their respective matchups with Army later in the schedule to be for all the marbles. Unfortunately, one of these teams will be playing for second. Here are a few critical factors that could go a long way in ensuring the Falcons are still in the hunt for the CiC.

Three Keys to an Air Force Victory

1. DISABLE THE PROP

No different than Army and Air Force, Navy wants to establish an inside run game with the fullback to open up the offense. Of their running backs, three of Navy’s top four ball carriers by yards and carries are all fullbacks. Daba Fofana (2.7), Logan Point (3.3) and Anton Hall (3.4) have a cumulative average of 3.13 yards per carry, with a single touchdown between the three of them.

This is a really important point for the Falcons defense to focus, because the slot-backs and conventional “tail-back” for the Midshipmen are much more effective averaging more than five yards per carry. That said, an inability to get the ball outside can be widely contributed by an ineffective inside run game. If the Air Force front seven can clog up the inside, that Naval ship will struggle mightily to go anywhere.

2. DAMAGE THE HULL

With an offense that has underwhelmed, it’s easy to overlook a Navy defense that has played well most of this young season. The surrendering of 37 points to a very dangerous pass attack of Memphis contributes to some misleading statistics. Entering halftime, the Tigers only led by a single score, 13-7. As offense completely stalled in the second half, Memphis wore down the Navy defense pulling away with 14 fourth quarter points.

Against Delaware the Mids only surrendered 14 points, and it took a very esteemed East Carolina offense two overtimes to reach 20. So it’s not as if the defense hasn’t been doing their part. In fact, surrendering under 70 yards per game on the ground, Brian Newberry’s defense ranks 5th nationally against the run. Taking this a step further, Navy has amassed 22 tackles for loss in just three games. This is good for 20th nationally.

The Falcons have proven over the past few seasons against Navy in particular that they can wear the Mids down. Big runs may not come early and often, but persistence should pay off against a defense that will likely be spending a lot of time on the field. If the front seven from Annapolis wears or relents, the ship will quickly take on water.

3. SINK THE SHIP

We’ve spent a lot of time talking about the big play potential of Air Force. This has been largely in part due to the expectation that Haaziq Daniels could expose a defense that loads the box. Outside of an 80 yard strike to Dane Kinamon early this year, that has not been the case. Ben Brittain actually came in for a quick strike to David Cormier on his first pass attempt last week that went for 80 yards.

Other than these two passes, most of their big plays have come on the ground. And there have been plenty of that variety. If the Falcons start making gains on the ground with any regularity, look out; a big pass may loom. If these splash plays start to rear, it’s only a short time to follow that Navy’s chances at winning will rest sunken and wrecked.

Prediction

Navy head coach, Ken Niumatalolo and his team have taken a lot of heat the past few seasons for underperforming. Aside from a memorable upset of Army last December, there’s not been a lot to celebrate in Annapolis. A win last week against East Carolina may have put some wind in their sails, but they’d need gale force gusts to really reverse fortunes.

For the Mids to return to form, they have got to rediscover an effective run game. We noted the need for an effective inside run game earlier to match the success that their military brethren have largely experienced. One big problem is that Navy doesn’t have an all conference standout like Brad Roberts, or a stable of relentless pounders like Army. Probably more notable, they simply don’t have the horses in front. As hard as it may be to believe, Navy is leagues behind at offensive line, and that is a major reason for their struggles.

Since the loss to Wyoming, Air Force has gone to a heavier three man front on the defensive line, featuring Kalawai’a Pescaia, Christopher Herrera and Payton Zdroik and it’s proven impactful. Consider the return of a starter in Jayden Thiergood and emerging depth from P.J. Ramsey, this front is starting to look formidable. Combine this unit with a loaded linebacker group, and yards will not come easy for Navy.

I expect a first half fist fight on Saturday. But the Falcons will throw more punches, have more endurance and ultimately have much heavier fists for the duration of the bout. The second half of this game might get away from the Midshipmen.

Air Force sings second.

Air Force 31, Navy 13
