Why Memphis Will Win

Score just a little bit and it should be enough.

USF has been better at times, and the offense was able to push East Carolina and Temple, but the overall talent and pop aren’t there to keep up if Memphis goes Memphis.

The Tigers were stuffed by Cincinnati last week and the still mangled 316 passing yards. USF gives up yards however you want to take them. It has given up 200 rushing yards or more for times in the six games and has been awful in the secondary over the last three games.

Why USF Will Win

Can the Bulls take the ball away enough to matter?

The didn’t generate a takeaway in the first two games, and then the team started to get more aggressive and forced a ton of mistakes with 13 takeaways in the last four games.

The defense all the way around hasn’t been strong enough, but the secondary hasn’t been bad at times. It needs to generate just enough third down stops to keep the game from getting out of hand, and the line has to generate the type of pressure that Cincinnati did last week to stuff Memphis for just five yards on the ground.

What’s Going To Happen

Memphis will quickly bounce back from debacle against the Bearcats. The team is 3-0 at home, 0-2 on the road, and now it gets to enjoy the Liberty Bowl again.

Yeah, USF managed to come up with two more more takeaways in the last four games, and they still lost three of the dates by double-digits.

The Tigers will get up fast, USF will start making mistakes, and it’ll all spiral out of control from there.

Why SMU Will Win

The Temple defense hasn’t been good enough.

The offense has its issues, but it’s the defensive side that’s been the bigger disappointment with a clunker against Tulane last week. The Green Wave were able to run and throw equally well, and now SMU should be able to do the same.

The Mustangs got past the loss to Cincinnati with 300 passing yards and 255 on the ground in the win over Navy. Everyone is getting trucked by the Bearcats at the moment – SMU is doing that to everyone else.

Why Temple Will Win

There are way too many good parts to this to be this mediocre.

The Owl secondary is fine, the passing game is good, and the offensive line isn’t bad, but the run defense has to be better and the downfield passing attack has to be sharper. SMU’s defense can be thrown on enough to stay in the game.

With Anthony Russo out with a shoulder injury, it’s up to Trad Beatty and Re-al Mitchell to take their turns, and they should combine for at least 200 yards.

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much does being in Philadelphia matter?

The Owls are finally off the road, going 0-3 on away from Lincoln Financial and 1-0 at home. SMU has only left Texas once, and that was to go over to Tulane.

The absence of Russo matters for a team that will need the offense to blow up to keep up. The Owls will be better than they were against Tulane, but it won’t be enough.

Why Tulane Will Win

The Green Wave pass rush continues to be among the best in the conference.

The defense overall might have its issues against the better passing teams, but at least there’s enough pressure into the backfield to be a bother. East Carolina’s offensive front is able to pound away a bit, but it’s not good in pass protection and there are way too many negative plays.

Offensively, Tulane came up with one of its best performances of the year in a good 38-3 win over Temple. It was balanced, the passing game has been okay, and when the running game rolls, the team wins.

Tulane is 3-1 when grinding out 200 yards or more, and ECU gives up 205 rushing yards per game.

Why East Carolina Will Win

The Pirate passing game is working.

The wins might not be there, but it’s a hard-luck team with two straight close-call losses to Navy and Tulsa when the O was just fine. The Pirates are great at controlling the clock and the tempo, and now it gets to roll against a Green Wave offense that doesn’t really care about time of possession.

ECU should have the ball for 35 minutes and should be able to put the pressure if Holton Ahlers ca get hot again. He hit a strong Tulsa team for 330 yards through the air with his third three-touchdown day of the season.

What’s Going To Happen

East Carolina just can’t break through, but it’s not playing poorly. After a rough first two games to start the season the team is starting to play a whole lot better. The wins aren’t there, but the team is just so close.

Tulane and QB Michael Pratt will hit enough deep plays to turn this into a shootout, but the defense will led the team down again. It’ll be a close, fun game with the Pirates finally getting its second win.

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Houston is a bit banged up, with the biggest loss star WR Marquez Stevenson, who’s out with an ankle injury. The bigger problem is a Cougar run D that’s also hurting.

This isn’t a high-flying Bearcat team through the air, but the passing game works. It’s the ground attack that’s the biggest plus with over 550 yards in the last two weeks with the key blowout wins over SMU and Memphis.

BYU didn’t bother to run on the Cougars – the passing attack worked too well – and Navy couldn’t get going, but UCF ripped off big dash after big dash with 353 yards on the ground.

RB Gerrid Doaks has been great, but QB Desmond Ridder has taken his game up a few notches. He ran for 179 yards and three scores against SMU, hit 80% of his passes against Memphis – and ran for two touchdowns – and now Houston has to deal with all of it.

Why Houston Will Win

The Cougar pass rush is a killer.

Cincinnati has been outstanding on third downs, and the offensive line has been good at keeping teams out of the backfield, but it’s about to be under more pressure than it has seen all year.

The UH D might have had huge problems against UCF, but the Cougars generated six sacks and seven tackles for loss. There’s still a high-powered offense even the loss of Stevenson – the passing game will be great, and the ability is there to keep up.

What’s Going To Happen

Cincinnati is a machine.

The defense has been a rock throughout, the offense keeps everything moving with brute force, and there’s surprising explain with the running game to go along with the overall toughness.

Houston is good enough to hang the most point that anyone has against the UC D, but the injuries on both sides of the ball are too important. – not having Stevenson really hurts.

Why New Mexico Will Win

The New Mexico offense should work as long as the parts are healthy.

Tevaka Tuioti is a dangerous playmaker who can make things happen on the ground – he ran for a team-high 69 yards and a score in the loss to San Jose State – and threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns.

Hawaii should be able to crank up the offense how ever it wants to, but as long as Tuioti can get room to move, and if the offense can move the chains and control the clock better than it did against the Spartans, there’s enough explosion to keep up.

Why Hawaii Will Win

Can Hawaii summon up the passing game we’re all used to?

This isn’t the normal Rainbow Warrior team under new head coach Todd Graham. It’s more physical, it’s got enough of a defense to at least be okay, and it’s going to try running the ball as much as possible.

However, Chevan Cordeiro has the ability to start throwing more to go along with his running skills. New Mexico’s secondary is going to be a big, big problem throughout the season, and that showed with the 481 yards allowed to San Jose State in the opener.

What’s Going To Happen

Hawaii finally gets the home opener, and it’ll play up to the moment. The offense will still rely on grinding it out a bit, but the chains will keep moving with enough big pass plays to take control early on.

New Mexico’s offense will be fine, but it won’t be able to stop the Rainbow Warrior attack.

Why Fresno State Will Win

It wasn’t perfect, but Fresno State played far better in its second game.

It lost to Hawaii in the opener because the defense didn’t do anything against the ground game. Against Colorado State, the passing game worked with Washington transfer Jake Haener going off with three touchdown passes, 311 yards, and after the problems in the opener, no picks.

UNLV just can’t move the ball. It didn’t do anything in the first half against San Diego State, and it couldn’t keep up against Nevada. The O line hasn’t been good enough, and there aren’t any third down conversions, hitting just 19% of its chances.

Why UNLV Will Win

There was hope with the passing game under QB Max Gilliam against Nevada.

The passing game didn’t go anywhere against San Diego State, but Gilliam threw for 207 yards against Nevada with two touchdown passes. The Fresno State secondary hasn’t been anything special, the Rebels should be able to push for at least 250 yards, and at home, there should be an even more consistent effort.

The Bulldog D isn’t doing much on third downs, the run defense hasn’t been special, and the four turnovers in two games have been a problem. UNLV needs the help.

What’s Going To Happen

Fresno State has a good enough downfield passing attack that’s about to start clicking.

New head coach Kalen DeBoer has needed to tweak some things and it’s going to take a while to be more consistent, but his team will have the offense that UNLV won’t.

Why BYU Will Win

America, welcome to Zach Wilson.

You might have heard about the BYU quarterback as part of the Heisman race, or maybe as a first round draft pick, and here he is with a national audience to make his case for both things.

He’s hitting 75% of his passes for 2,152 yards with 19 yards and two interceptions to go along with seven touchdown passes. He’s got a good enough arm, great mobility, and the deep ball ability to stretch the field. But it also helps that he’s got the running game to take the pressure off.

Wilson and the passing game have been so good that the ground attack doesn’t get noticed. The offensive line keeps Wilson clean, the pass rush has been great, and the run D has allowed fewer than 100 yards per game.

This is a tested, jelled team with seven games under its belt.

Why Boise State Will Win

Boise State hasn’t been perfection its first two games, but it hasn’t been far off.

It’s not getting flagged, there’s only been one giveaway, and the passing game has been close to flawless no matter who’s been under center.

The D might have had issues with Air Force and its running game – it gave up 415 yards – but that’s Air Force. This is a better defensive front than it showed, the pass rush on the outside will be there to at least bother Wilson, and the offensive parts are good enough to keep up the pace.

For all the amazing things BYU has done it beat … UTSA? Texas State? WKU? Crushing Navy was nice, but whatever. Beating Houston on the road was great, but the secondary had issues.

This is by far the toughest game yet for the Cougars, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Will it be Hank Bachmeier or Jack Sears at quarterback for Boise State? They’ve both been great, but the coaching staff has been mum on Bachmeier who missed the Air Force game. With or without him, this will be the game for the Boise State running game.

This will be more of a grinding game than anything high-flying. Wilson will be more steady than sensational, but he’ll be good enough to show what all the fuss is about.

Why San Jose State Will Win

The Spartans are throwing the ball well enough to potentially hang around with anyone in the conference.

Nick Starkel has stepped in right away and rocked, the senior receiving tandem of Bailey Gaither and Tre Walker have been explosive, and it’s all working because the offensive line has been great so far.

San Diego State has been great so far, but it hasn’t faced anyone who can throw well – UNLV and Utah State are both offensively challenged. And that goes for everything else – the Aztecs haven’t been pressed yet. However …

Why San Diego State Will Win

Under new head coach Brady Hoke, San Diego State has more of an offense to go along with the always great defense.

Playing UNLV and Utah State has made things easier, but there hasn’t been so much as a blip in either game. The Aztecs are No. 1 in the nation in total defense, No. 1 in plays in the backfield, No. 1 in third down D, No. 2 in scoring D, and the running game is rolling, too.

San Diego State’s top rushing performance last year was 281 yards. This year? 287 yards and three touchdowns against UNLV, and 407 yards and three scores against Utah State, and averaging over seven yards per carry.
