All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Utah (0-0) vs Weber State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Weber State Will Win

This was a good, strong FCS playoff team through the spring session, going unbeaten in the short regular season before dropping a 34-31 heartbreaker to Southern Illinois in the playoffs.

The Wildcats get the job done on defense. They’re terrific at getting into the backfield, they’re a rock against decent passing teams, and they’re great at taking the ball away.

On the other side, they run the ball, don’t make a slew of mistakes, and they’re able to control games by making teams play their pace and style.

However …

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

Why Utah Will Win

Weber State isn’t going to get physical with the Utah lines.

The Utes struggled to get going in 2020 – it was the last Power Five program to start the season – and they weren’t able to get the passing game going. However, the offensive line was built up and now should dominant with all five starters back.

This front five and running game will pound away, the linebacking corps will keep the Weber State running game from breaking off big runs, and with former Baylor QB Charlie Brewer in the mix now, everything should be a bit smoother.

What’s Going To Happen

The Utah defense will take over.

The Ute offense will score on its first drive, but it’ll struggle for a bit against a feisty and sharp Weber State defense. There won’t be too much drama – Utah’s offense will score when it needs to – but it won’t be over until midway through the third quarter.

Again, the Utah D will get the job done, and then the O will put it away late with a few good scoring drives.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UAB (0-0) vs Jacksonville State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Jacksonville State Will Win

This is a very, very dangerous Gamecock team that proved throughout the FCS spring session that it has the firepower and talent to more than just make this a game.

A playoff team earlier in 2021, it returns one of the best run defenses in the FCS, one of the most dangerous passing attacks, and with a D that’s able to bring the pass rush and to a great job at taking the ball away.

There’s talent here. DJ Coleman is a high-end edge rusher who’ll get a long look from the NFL, the ground game has the parts with Josh Samuel and Uraih West, and Zerrick Cooper is a terrific quarterback when healthy – and Zion Webb is able to fill in when needed.

UAB has to be on its game from the start.

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

Why UAB Will Win

It’s not a stretch to call this the best UAB team yet under head coach Bill Clark.

The defending Conference USA champion not only gets back almost all the key parts from the 2020 team, but it has longtime quarterback Tyler Johnston back after spending a bulk of last year banged up.

The offensive line is loaded, and the running game will follow. Jacksonville State might have the parts on the defensive front to shine, but late in the year it started giving up yards on the ground and the secondary was hit for 200 yards or more in four of the last five games.

UAB should have several ways to keep things moving.

What’s Going To Happen

UAB is going to be in for a fight.

It’ll pull it out – it has too much talent, depth, and experience – but Jacksonville State will be up in the first half and be just a drive away from getting right back in it in the second half.

The Blazer defense that was seventh in the nation last year and returns nine starters will come up big when it has to.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

San Jose State (0-0) vs Southern Utah (0-0) Game Preview

Why Southern Utah Will Win

The Thunderbirds got in a half-season worth of live games with the spring session, and while they went 1-5, that’s misleading. Four of the five losses were by three points or fewer – there are a whole lot of positives for San Jose State to worry about.

Southern Utah has a terrific pass rush, the offensive line is outstanding in pass protection – a must against the Spartan defensive front – and the passing game is good enough to keep up. However …

Why San Jose State Will Win

Southern Utah doesn’t bomb away. It’s a mid-range throwing team that wasn’t great in the clutch and couldn’t run the ball enough to matter.

The Spartan defense should once again be among the best in the Mountain West with ten starters returning. Points are going to be hard to come by, the secondary should be able to keep the downfield plays from happening, and the pass rush really should be solid even against the good Thunderbird offensive front.

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

What’s Going To Happen

Southern Utah needs takeaways and San Jose State mistakes to pull this off, but it’s not going to happen. The Spartan defense will have a few rough drives, but it’ll clamp down in the second half, the offensive side will be balanced and efficient, and it’ll be a strong warm-up performance to ease back into the end of 2020 regular season groove.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UConn (0-0) vs Fresno State (0-0) Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

Give the Huskies this – they’re rested.

They’ve had a year off – the program opted out on the 2020 season – and didn’t get a chance to do a whole lot this spring, but the running game should work right away.

Fresno State might return a whole slew of defensive parts, but it was miserable last year against the run – the pressure is on the linebacking corps to produce right away.

UConn’s Kevin Mensah is a strong, quick back who should be able to handle the work behind a line that was very young – and very bad – in 2019 and, again, had plenty of time over the last year to work.

However …

Why Fresno State Will Win

The Fresno State defense should be better, and it starts with former Boise State Bronco Tyson Maeva, a 6-0, 240-pound thumper of a linebacker who should fix the glitch. It’s the other side of the ball that should make the most noise.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer might have had a few ups and downs in his first season, but his offense rocked. Former Washington star recruit Jake Haener ripped it up late last year – he turned into a 300-yard machine – and he shouldn’t have any issues against the spotty UConn secondary.

The Huskies should be even rougher against the run, and that’s where veteran Ronnie Rivers should come in with a huge opener along with the rest of the deep Bulldog backfield.

What’s Going To Happen

Fresno State’s offense is going to do whatever it wants.

The defense will be what makes the coaching staff happy – it’ll show a big improvement from 2020 – but that’s because UConn will struggle. Fresno State will get off to a great early start and won’t have any problem putting this away before the fourth quarter.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Nebraska (0-0) vs Illinois (0-0) Game Preview

Why Nebraska Will Win

The ground game should be able to take over right away.

The passing attack might be a tad iffy until a few new playmakers emerge, but the Huskers have a good group of backs around QB Adrian Martinez, and the offensive front will be fine despite losing the two top parts from last year’s line. This isn’t going to be a top Illinois defense quite yet – if at all.

There’s talent on the Illini side, but after finishing dead last in the Big Ten in total defense, there’s an overhaul being done. However …

Why Illinois Will Win

New head coach Bret Bielema and new defensive coordinator Ryan Walters should be able to crank up the pass rush and the pressure into the backfield.

Nebraska has some good offensive parts, but most of them are untested and Martinez has yet to show any real consistency. The Illinois linebacking corps will be a massive plus and the line should be far, far stronger.

On the other side, Illinois has a few good receiving transfers to bother the Husker secondary, and it should have a decent enough running game to at least keep things moving.

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska might be having its issues under Scott Frost, but it won four straight over the Illini before last year’s 41-23 shocker in Lincoln.

Both teams are going to come up with an ultra-intense effort in what should a game full of plenty of energy. It’s going to be ragged, full of mistakes, and there won’t be too much coming from the respective passing games, but it’s going to be a fun opener to the season and the Bielema era.

Can the Nebraska passing game come up with the big plays needed to overcome a solid effort from the Illinois balanced attack?

Martinez will have a hard time breaking free from the Illini linebacking corps, but Nebraska will be good enough on the ground in the second half to come up with the program’s first season-opening road win since rocking Iowa 42-7 in 1999.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UCLA (0-0) vs Hawaii (0-0) Game Preview

Why Hawaii Will Win

Everyone might think offense when it comes to Hawaii, but the defensive side was mostly the star in the first season under Todd Graham, and it should be even stronger right out of the gate.

Just about everyone is back.

The offensive side isn’t bad – it’ll be more balanced than sensational – but with just about all of the 2020 tackles made by Rainbow Warrior defenders accounted for, it really is about the D.

The bulk is there for the Hawaii defensive front, there’s speed in the back eight, and there should be just enough generated pressure to be a problem for the Bruin backfield.

UCLA’s quarterback situation should be fine no matter what, but not having Dorian Thompson-Robinson for the first few fall practices – out for an undisclosed reason – isn’t a plus. However …

Why UCLA Will Win

Again, the quarterback situation is fine. Thompson-Robinson is the veteran who knows what he’s doing, but the Bruins are deep at the position.

The offense is loaded with veterans – the receiving corps should be UCLA’s best in a long, long time – and the ground attack should take over early on behind a veteran line with everyone back. However, just like it is for Hawaii, the offense gets the headlines, but it’s the defense that should be the star.

The Bruin defensive front should take over against a line that was way too leaky last season. Even with a few personnel losses, UCLA has the parts to press throughout and turn Hawaii into more of a passing team – it sounds strange for that program, but it really does want to run well.

If the Bruin secondary can keep the momentum going from the end of 2020 when it was picking off just about everything, it should come up big. The chances will be there if the pass rush does what it’s supposed to.

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA has only won one of its last five season-openers – and it took a Josh Rosen epic performance/Texas A&M epic collapse for that to happen in 2017.

Hawaii will be plucky.

It’ll come out great on the defensive front with several big stops and plays in the backfield, and then the Bruin passing game will settle in. It’s not going to be a dominant performance, but UCLA will take over in the second half, win the turnover battle, and pull away late.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UTEP (0-0) vs New Mexico State (0-0) Game Preview

Why UTEP Will Win

The running game should be just good enough to control the game.

New Mexico State’s defense was a disaster in 2019, the team didn’t play in 2020, and the D struggled against FCS teams in its modified spring season, allowing over five yards per carry with five touchdowns in the two games. UTEP isn’t exactly going to be all ground-and-pound, but Deion Hankins is a solid back in a good rotation working behind a veteran offensive front.

The passing attack should be just good enough to keep things moving. The experienced receiving corps should be able to take over once the NMSU defense starts to pay more attention to the ground attack.

On the flip side …

Week 1 College Football Schedule

Why New Mexico State Will Win

The spring games really should matter.

The Aggies might not have played all that well, but considering them live scrimmages for the coaching staff to see what it had to work with.

The offensive line has a few nice parts to build around – Sage Doxtater is a fringe-flier NFL left tackle prospect and former Ole Miss Rebel Eli Johnson is a veteran center who knows what he’s doing.

The quarterback situation will be interesting all throughout the first part of the season, but the JUCO transfer Jonah Johnson has size and upside, and Weston Eget got in some work this spring. They’re not coming in cold.

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico State might have the experience from spring ball, but the two performance against FCS teams were hardly inspiring.

UTEP has more experience, enough depth to matter, and more playmakers and offensive options. The Miners won’t dominate, but they should be able to control the game throughout.

New Mexico State has won three straight in the series, but the O won’t get going in this until it’s too late.

Why Indianapolis Will Win

Does Jacksonville have any players left?

In a true Tank for Trevor (Lawrence) campaign, the Jaguars are dumping players left and right for future draft picks in a developmental season that appears to be destined to finish with the No. 1 overall selection. The focus might be on the Colt offense with Philip Rivers under center, but the improved defensive front should take over early on.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 1

Why Jacksonville Will Win

So what on this thing works? The defensive line should be a positive as the season goes on, with a few terrific young players to built the entire franchise around. Drafting K’Lavon Chaisson to go along with Josh Allen from last year’s class gives the Jaguars a dynamic pair to get excited about, and they’re going to be turned loose to get to Rivers.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis
This is going to be interesting. Marlon Mack is a proven fantasy talent, but Taylor is the special type of back to work the entire offense around. However, at Wisconsin, Taylor had issues with fumbling around the goal line. Will he get the short-yardage chances early on?

What’s Going To Happen

Jacksonville is still a professional football franchise with professional football players. On the plus side, this group can truly do the Nobody Believes In Us thing, and the next men up are going to be extra motivated. They’ll be plucky, but the Indianapolis offense will take over in the second half.
