Washington vs Cal Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

It’s not like Cal has been awful.

It struggled offensively to get that one score needed in the second half to lose to Nevada, and it couldn’t hold on in a fun 34-32 loss at TCU.

There are flaws. The defense isn’t the Cal defense of recent history when it comes to getting the big stop – the D is last among Pac-12 teams in yards allowed – and the punting game has to be far stronger, but the offense is getting the yards.

After a rough start, Chase Garbers and the passing game have settled in, there aren’t a slew of giveaways, and the team really is improving.

Now it gets a Washington team that sputtered out of the gate, but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington Will Win

Rolling Arkansas State 52-3 doesn’t mean the Huskies are now okay and this is the team everyone expected to be, but it’s a start.

Finally, the offensive line played well, the running game worked, and everyone could take a big breath for a moment. Defensively, this is still a strong group that should get better and better as the year goes on.

The run D melted down against Michigan, but overall the Dawgs have been great against the pass – allowing just 44 yards against the Wolverines; granted, because the run was working too well – they lead all Pac-12 teams on third down stops.

The defense has had to work extra hard because …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Washington has GOT to stop with the turnovers.

It lost to Montana mostly because it was -3 three in turnover margin. It came up with three takeaways against Arkansas State, but it gave up three times.

If the Huskies can somehow find a way to not turn the ball over multiple times, everything will be okay. But they’ll give it up twice and Cal will use the opportunities to stay in the game.

It’ll be tight throughout with Washington unable to put it away. It’ll hold on, but it won’t be a breeze.

Washington downs Giants as Dustin Hopkins makes good on second chance

Dustin Hopkins’ second chance lifted Washington over the Giants

The Washington Football Team had lost.

Then, it hadn’t.

Thanks to an offside penalty called on New York Giants defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, Dustin Hopkins got another chance after missing a 48-yard field goal as time expired Thursday.

Hopkins tried again, this time from 43 yards, and the kick snuck inside the upright and the Washington Football Team stole a 30-29 victory from the Giants as time expired.

The offside penalty was the second on New York on Washington’s game-winning drive.

Taylor Heinicke directed the march that wound up good for 50 yards on 11 plays in the final two minutes.

New York had taken the lead on a 35-yard field goal before Washington went on its game-winning march.

Washington is 1-1 and the Giants are 0-2.

Taylor Heinicke to Ricky Seals-Jones for spectacular Washington touchdown

Washington scores on a pass from Taylor Heinicke to Ricky Seals-Jones

Taylor Heinicke made the start Thursday against the New York Giants for the Washington Football team and delivered a spectacular pass to Ricky Seals-Jones in the fourth quarter.

Heinicke threw a strike to the tight end who made a great grab in the end zone for six points.

Watch as Seals-Jones, who made his first catch for the WFT on the play, goes up to get the football and comes down with both feet inbounds.

After the PAT, Washington held a 27-26 lead.

Heinicke was starting because Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered a hip injury in the WFT opener and will be lost for more than a month.

The play before the touchdown saw Heinicke hit J.D. McKissic on another nice play that wound up going for 56 yards.

Heinicke hit the 300-yard mark on the touchdown throw to Seals-Jones.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Washington (0-2) vs Arkansas State (1-1) Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The offense has been a whole lot of fun so far.

The Red Wolves have always had a good attack, but last week they blew up for 582 passing yards in the 55-50 loss to Memphis. They’re going to bring the big plays against a Washington team that desperately needs anything to work offensively.

This isn’t how it was supposed to go for the Huskies.

The defense was miserable against the Michigan running game, but it held Cade McNamara to 44 passing yards with 33 of those coming on one play. However, that happened because the Wolverine offense didn’t have to press – the UW offense wasn’t going anywhere.

This week, former Florida State QB James Blackman and veteran Layne Hatcher will each get their turns trying to keep the pressure on Washington to crank up the O.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington Will Win

Enough is enough, Washington.

The offensive line hasn’t even been close. This was supposed to be a tough running team that controlled games and then relied on the defense to do the rest.

This week, a win is a win is a win no matter how it happens, and it has to start with the passing game. Dylan Morris hasn’t been anything special so far, but he’s going against a secondary that struggled against Central Arkansas and got ripped to shreds by Memphis.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

As bad as the start has been, Washington has all of its realistic goals still on the table.

The College Football Playoff is gone, but the Pac-12 season hasn’t started yet. This is too good a team with too much strength on the lines to be this bad.

Arkansas State won’t be able to do enough with the passing game to overcome a breakout day from a Washington offense that’s going to do everything it can to establish the ground attack. When that doesn’t work, it’ll throw for over 300 yards.

Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick likely to miss several weeks with hip injury

Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick likely to miss several weeks with hip injury:

The Washington Football Team is going to be without quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for several weeks.

In the Football Team’s season-opening 20-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Fitzpatrick suffered a hip injury. The QB was hit on a pass rush from the Chargers’ Uchenna Nwosu on the play.

A Monday update from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says that Fitzpatrick is now likely to miss a few games, at least. If it’s the worst-case scenario, the veteran could miss extensive time.

Here’s RapSheet’s explanation of the injury on Good Morning Football:

After leaving the game in the second quarter, Fitzpatrick was replaced by Taylor Heinicke.

Prior to injury, the 38-year-old was 3-for-6 passing for 13 yards. In relief, Heinicke was 11-for-15 for 112 yards with a touchdown.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera will further update Fitzpatrick’s status later on Monday after the referenced MRI by Rapoport.

Controversy on fumble, touchback call against Justin Herbert and Chargers

Montez Sweat hits Justin Herbert, the ball flies 15 yards to the end zone and officials call it a fumble and touchback

It won’t take long to figure out what one of the top controversial calls of Week 1 will be.

Watch as Justin Herbert is hit by Montez Sweat as he seemingly was releasing a pass intended for Jared Cook.

Incomplete pass, right? Wrong.

The officiating crew ruled Sweat’s hit forced Herbert to fumble the ball 15 yards forward, no less.

The turnover was reviewed and the call on the field was confirmed.

Instead of heading for what seemed to be at least a chance at a game-tying field goal, the Chargers had to send the defense on the field to try and stop Washington.

Fumble and touchback? Incompletion? What do you think?

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Michigan (1-0) vs Washington (0-1) Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

Washington is better than that.

No, really. It is.

There’s no excuse for a team with the talent to challenge for the Pac-12 title to lose to any FCS team, but to be a wee bit fair, Montana 1) has a killer D and 2) is coached by Bobby Hauck, a fantastic head coach who’s been dominant with the program.

Yeah, whatever – you don’t lose to the FCS team 13-7.

If there’s any silver lining in that, now Washington is really, really, really, really mad – and desperate.

The O line is better than it played, the D did its job allowing under 250 yards of total Grizzly offense, and Dylan Morris is a better quarterback than he showed.

Michigan’s top WR Ronnie Bell is out for the year with a knee injury, and there’s no chance the Wolverine ground game averages close to eight yards per carry like it did against Western Michigan, but …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Michigan Will Win

Don’t just blow off Michigan’s 47-14 performance as a victory over a MAC team.

More people than you might think thought Western Michigan was going to easily cover, if not pull off the upset.

Cade McNamara didn’t have to push himself, but he hit 9-of-11 passes for 136 yards and two scores. It’s not time to put him in the Tom Brady category quite yet, but that’s exactly what the everyone needed to see out of a Michigan quarterback.

No, the Wolverines aren’t running for 335 yards on this U-Dub D, but it will blast away and put the focus on stopping all the options in the rotation. Even with out Bell, as long as McNamara can hit the throws that are there, the O will move.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This will be the Washington we all thought we were getting – if it had done what it was supposed to do against Montana.

Points and yards are going to be impossible to come by with both defenses taking over. The Washington D will be stronger than the Michigan version, but the Washington O will turn the ball over that one extra time to be the difference in a stressful, tough battle.
