Washington vs Cal Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The Huskies got a chance to reset.

The hot team a few weeks ago after a dominant performance over Michigan State, it beat Stanford – a better win than it might have seemed at the time – and then the wheels came off in losses to UCLA and Arizona State.

The passing attack never stopped working, though, and it all kicked in with a 516-yard day against Arizona in a must-have win.

Now it all has to work against a Cal team that’s been fine, but wildly inconsistent.

Your season isn’t going that great if you lose to Colorado.

All of a sudden the O stopped scoring, and the D that was so good against Notre Dame and looked promising early is getting hammered hard through the air.

Enter Michael Penix Jr. and the No. 1 passing attack in college football. It’s going to have some fun against a Cal defense that doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Cal Will Win

Is there really a road thing happening with Washington?

Cal might have suffered the bigger setback in the Pac-12 with the loss to Colorado, losing at Arizona State after losing at UCLA wasn’t a good look.

The Bears might not have the high-powered offense to keep up the pace, but they’re not screwing up. The penalties are kept to a minimum and the two costly giveaways against Colorado were an anomaly with just two turnovers in the first five games.

Washington’s defense hasn’t been forcing takeaways. The offense hasn’t had a big problem with mistakes, but the two interceptions against UCLA changed the tone of the game.

Cal has to be at least +2 in turnover margin, it has to keep Washington from owning the time of possession battle, and the offense has to do what Arizona State did and be balanced and score whenever it gets a shot.

What’s Going To Happen

Washington won’t be perfect, but it’ll be good enough.

Cal’s defense will be great against the Husky running game, but it’ll give up 300 passing yards with the offense not generating anything on the ground to control the clock.

The Huskies will start out hot and Cal won’t be able to make up the stagger.

Washington vs Cal Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

It’s not like Cal has been awful.

It struggled offensively to get that one score needed in the second half to lose to Nevada, and it couldn’t hold on in a fun 34-32 loss at TCU.

There are flaws. The defense isn’t the Cal defense of recent history when it comes to getting the big stop – the D is last among Pac-12 teams in yards allowed – and the punting game has to be far stronger, but the offense is getting the yards.

After a rough start, Chase Garbers and the passing game have settled in, there aren’t a slew of giveaways, and the team really is improving.

Now it gets a Washington team that sputtered out of the gate, but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington Will Win

Rolling Arkansas State 52-3 doesn’t mean the Huskies are now okay and this is the team everyone expected to be, but it’s a start.

Finally, the offensive line played well, the running game worked, and everyone could take a big breath for a moment. Defensively, this is still a strong group that should get better and better as the year goes on.

The run D melted down against Michigan, but overall the Dawgs have been great against the pass – allowing just 44 yards against the Wolverines; granted, because the run was working too well – they lead all Pac-12 teams on third down stops.

The defense has had to work extra hard because …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Washington has GOT to stop with the turnovers.

It lost to Montana mostly because it was -3 three in turnover margin. It came up with three takeaways against Arkansas State, but it gave up three times.

If the Huskies can somehow find a way to not turn the ball over multiple times, everything will be okay. But they’ll give it up twice and Cal will use the opportunities to stay in the game.

It’ll be tight throughout with Washington unable to put it away. It’ll hold on, but it won’t be a breeze.

Why Washington Will Win

Can the Cal offense be better?

It gets back QB Chase Garbers and a good offensive line, but it only scored 30 points or more twice, and Washington has the defense to keep the struggles going to start 2020.

New head coach Jimmy Lake got to this point as a star defensive mind, and his staff and team have had an entire offseason to prepare for this. Nine of the top 12 tacklers are back, there’s a lot of young talent waiting to roll, and the secondary is loaded around Elijah Molden, one of the nation’s top defensive backs.

But …

Why Cal Will Win

The Cal offense really might be better. It might not be a high-flying fun show, but it’ll be effective enough to go along with the great defense.

The offensive line is loaded with veterans and should be a whole lot stronger after struggling against decent pass rushes, and the running game should be just effective enough to allow Garbers several easy third down chances.

The Cal secondary will be terrific. It’s going to have to make up for a few key losses on the front seven, but this is a rock-solid group that should be able to keep a retooled Washington passing game from going off.

Week 10 College Football Schedule

What’s Going To Happen

Everyone is talking about USC and Oregon in the Pac-12 race, but the winner of this will be right there in the mix throughout the fast season.

Both teams can play D, both teams will be effective on the offensive side, and both teams are well coached. Cal has won the last two meetings in by a combined total of three points. This will be every bit as tight with the veteran quarterback and home field being the slightest difference.
