How Washington stunned the Buccaneers with the upset of the week

In a 29-19 upset over the Buccaneers, the Washington Football Team outfought and outthought the defending Super Bowl champs.

The Washington Football Team snapped their four-game losing streak in spectacular fashion as they put together their best performance of the season against the defending Super Bowl champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; winning 29-19.

Taylor Heinicke completed 26 of 32 passes for 256 yards, one touchdown, and a 110.4 pass rating. Unfortunately, despite the win, Washington lost their top defensive player, defensive end, Chase Young, as he left the game in the second quarter with a potential season-ending knee injury.

Washington’s defense came out on fire forcing a three-and-out on the Buccaneers’ first drive and going up early with a field goal. The first quarter was a shocking one as Tom Brady had interceptions on back-to-back drives.

Right as the Buccaneers needed an answer, safety Bobby McCain stepped up to pick off the overthrown ball by Brady.

As the game marched on, Brady bounced back in the second half throwing two touchdowns. A short touchdown pass to tight end Cameron Brate, and a 40-yard touchdown to Mike Evans.

After the Buccaneers cut the deficit to 23-19, Washington got the ball back, and the one thing you never want to do is give it back to Brady to win the game.

So they didn’t.

Washington marched down the field with a 19 play, 80-yard drive that lasted over ten minutes. Washington converted five third-downs on this last drive.

Then to put the game out of reach, Washington scored a touchdown putting them up by ten with only 30 seconds left on the clock; preventing Brady from a comeback win.

Washington had a fantastic game plan for Brady and that was to prevent anything from going over the top. Mike Evans was only targeted three times and the Buccaneers were held to a 40% third-down conversion percentage, only getting 4 out of 10 attempts. Washington’s usually vulnerable defense stepped up when it was necessary.

“They did a really good job playing two-high defense,” Evans said after the game. “We had a really good week of practice. We were prepared, we know what to do and we knew what to expect. We just didn’t make enough plays today. I tell the guys it’s just one game; it doesn’t define our season. We’ve got to come with it if we want to get where we want to go.”

What hurt the Buccaneers the most was the six penalties for 43 yards and the two turnovers that happened early, while only taking the ball away from Washington one time.

“It’s baffling to me after the week of practice I watched these guys have that we could play that poorly,” Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians concluded. “We’ve got to show up on Sundays. We’re doing a heck of a job on Monday through Friday, but we’re not showing up on Sundays.”

Chase Young has suffered an injured knee as Washington faces Tampa Bay

A rough season for the Washington Football Team took a brutal turn on Sunday when star defensive end Chase Young left the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a knee injury.

Young managed to walk off the field with help after suffering the injury.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting the NFC East team fears Young has a torn ACL.

The injury occurred in the second quarter.

Hall of Fame LB Sam Huff dies at 87

Former New York Giant and Washington HOF LB Sam Huff has died.

Sam Huff, who starred for the New York Giants and Washington Football Team as a linebacker from 1956-69, has died at the age of 87.

Huff had been diagnosed with dementia in 2013.

He was drafted in the third round out of West Virginia by the Giants. Huff played for New York from 1956-63. Part of his Big Blue story is he coach Jim Lee Howell could not come up with a position for him as a rookie and Huff was discouraged enough to leave camp.

He was stopped at the airport by assistant coach Vince Lombardi, who coaxed him back to camp.

In his rookie season, the Giants won the NFL championship and Huff became the first rookie middle linebacker to start an NFL championship game.

Huff played in four consecutive Pro Bowls with the Giants from 1959 through 1963. He was named MVP of the 1961 Pro Bowl.

He was the first NFL player to be featured on the cover of Time magazine

Per his Wikipedia page:

Huff joined the Redskins in 1964 and they agreed to pay him $30,000 in salary and $5,000 for scouting, compared to the $19,000 he would have made another year with New York. The impact Huff had was almost immediate and the Redskins’ defense was ranked second in the NFL in 1965.

After an ankle injury in 1967 ended his streak of 150 straight games played Huff retired in 1968.

Lombardi talked Huff out of retirement in 1969 when he was named Washington’s head coach. … Huff then retired for good after 14 seasons and 30 career interceptions. He spent one season coaching the Washington linebackers in 1970.

He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982.

He had been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1980.

After retiring, Huff spent three seasons as a color commentator for the Giants radio team and then moved on in the same capacity for the Washington Radio Network, where he remained until his retirement at the end of the 2012 season,

Arizona State vs Washington Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

Can Arizona State possibly win the Pac-12 South by winning out and hoping for Utah losses to Oregon and Colorado after being Arizona this weekend?

That’s probably not happening, but there’s still one of the Pac-12’s bigger bowls to play for as the possible No. 3 team from the league by coming up with a few more wins. It starts with getting by a sluggish Washington team that’s playing hard, but isn’t putting enough points.

Scoring points has been like pulling teeth for the Huskies, only busting out against an Arkansas State defense that’s among the worst in the country.

Washington can’t run, can’t stop the run, and Arizona State is coming off a big day on the ground against USC. Oregon’s Travis Dye went off on Washington last weekend, and now it’s Rachaad White’s turn after cranking out 202 yards and three scores on USC.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Washington Will Win

The Washington run defense might be having problems, but the D as a whole allowed 275 yards or fewer in two of the last three games and fewer than 300 yards in three of the last five games.

Yeah, part of the reason is because everyone is running at will, but Washington leads the nation in pass defense allowing fewer than 100 yards in three of the last five games.

There might be a whole slew of problems, but there aren’t a whole lot of penalties and massive mistakes. Washington is among the best in the nation in fewest flags thrown against them, and Arizona State is getting walloped with penalties, committing an average of close to nine per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Things aren’t going well for Washington.

It’s struggling on the field, it won’t go bowling unless it wins two of its last three games, and head coach Jimmy Lake is suspended for a knocking one of his players in the helmet.

Now the talk is about whether or not he’ll keep his job after a wildly disappointing season, but the team isn’t playing that poorly – it won two games in a row and pushed Oregon in last week’s loss.

Arizona State will keep with the gameplan by running and running some more.

It’s not going to take a whole lot of chances, getting past a sluggish first half by controlling the lines and the tempo in the second.

Oregon vs Washington Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Alright, Oregon. It’s on.

Yeah, getting the No. 4 slot in the first round of College Football Playoff rankings was strong, but they need to start winning and winning impressively considering the rest of the schedule isn’t that amazing – no Pac-12 teams in the CFP top 25 – and with Ohio State’s slate about the ramp up.

Oregon likes to make things interesting, but QB Anthony Brown is playing well enough – he threw for over 600 yards in the last two games with three touchdown passes last week against Colorado – his accuracy has improved, and he’s been able to rebuild from the loss to Stanford.

Washington doesn’t have an explosive enough offense – a comeback against Arizona aside – to keep up if the Ducks can get out fast.

Scoring is an issue for the Dawgs – they haven’t been above 24 points in any of the last four games – and the run D has been sketchy, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Washington Will Win

The Washington defense is the best in the nation against the pass.

That’s partly because teams spend so much time running on the UW defensive front, but but it gave up two touchdown passes to Cal, two more to UCLA, and that’s been it.

In the four wins, the D has come up with seven interceptions and just one in the four losses.

Oregon has been. to be nice about it – inconsistent.

It’s winning, but there have been a few too many defensive lapses, there aren’t enough big plays on third downs, and its own pass defense has been hit for more than 220 yards by everyone but Stony Brook.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Is this when Washington makes a gigantic statement in the Pac-12 title chase?

It might have been a disappointing year so far, but one win in this and the Ducks are back in the back in what would be a log jam in the hunt for the North.

It would also end the Pac-12 dream of getting a team into the College Football Playoff.

Oregon hasn’t always been smooth, but it has the offense that Washington doesn’t. The Huskies will keep this close for more than a half, but the Duck D will rise up with stop after stop in the fourth quarter to get out alive.

Washington vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The pass defense continues to be terrific.

There are a whole lot of issues with the Huskies in their maddeningly disappointing season, but but the secondary has stepped up after giving up over 300 yards against Cal. Oregon State, UCLA, and Arizona were all able to run well, but none of them were able to get their passing games going.

The Huskies have the biggest issue against teams that can run. Stanford can’t run.

The Cardinal passing game has been solid, but they ran for 13 yards against Arizona State and 76 against Washington State. That made it four times on the year with under 100 yards on the ground, and the production won’t suddenly crank up this week.

On the other side, Washington’s offense might be hit-or-miss, but when the team needed something big, the downfield passes were there to get out alive against Arizona. However

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Stanford Will Win

Washington needed to work really, really, really hard to get out alive against a miserable Arizona team.

Washington hasn’t been bad – the losses to Oregon State and UCLA were close – but the offense just isn’t consistent enough with no ground game to rely on and under 330 yards of total O in each of the last four games.

Stanford’s D has hardly been a rock, but it has the biggest issues against the run. That’s not going to be a concern with the Dawgs failing to get to 100 yards on the ground in three of the last four games.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Will having two weeks off rejuvenate a banged up Stanford team that hasn’t won since beating Oregon at the beginning of the month and has just that won win since beating Vanderbilt on September 18th.

Neither team does everything quite right, and they both have massive flaws to expose, but Washington’s lack of a consistent offense will shine through in the fourth quarter.
