What’s Going To Happen

Can the UNLV defense slow down the Hawaii passing attack?

The Rebels only have two wins on the year, and one was a strange victory over Vanderbilt on the road. They’ve been rocked by just about everyone else, but it comes down to whether or not the porous secondary can slow down the Rainbow Warrior air show that’s trying to lead the way to the team’s seventh win.

UNLV shut down the Vandy passing game cold, but it’s easy to put up at least 200 yards if anyone commits to it.
Hawaii commit to it.

The Rainbow Warrior defense will do its part, too, against a UNLV offense that can’t move the chains, isn’t consistent, and doesn’t have the ground game to slow things down when the defense is getting hit.

It doesn’t matter that it’s Chevan Cordeiro or Cole McDonald under center – Cordeiro threw for 309 yards and three scores against San Jose State, and he ran for 55 yards. The O will work without a problem as Hawaii rolls.

What’s Going To Happen

Houston has to win its final three games just to become bowl eligible, with at Tulsa and Navy to close. On a run of three losses in its last four games, it’s had problem, but it’s been feisty.

Now it has to deal with the firepower of a Memphis team looking to take a giant step forward to winning the West.

The Tigers have won three straight since losing to Temple, getting the key win over SMU two weeks ago and beating Navy in late September. It controls its own destiny in the race, but it still has to go to USF and host Cincinnati.

The Tiger passing game has been unstoppable at times, it’s among the nation’s most efficient attacks, and the ground game is balancing things out from time to time, too. Houston has been getting roasted through the air, allowing two touchdown passes or more in every game and over 200 yards against everyone but Tulane.

Clayton Tune and the Cougar passing attack will get its licks in. Memphis has a better defense than it’s being given credit for, but it’ll allow more than 300 yards as Houston comes up with a strong performance at home. However, the lack of a pass rush and inability to generate enough key stops will let Memphis to keep on firing.

It’ll be a battle for about 40 minutes, and then the Tigers will hit two home runs to pull away.

What’s Going To Happen

Will Notre Dame be able to sell-out at the last moment to keep the 273-game streak that goes back to 1973 alive?

It needs to, considering these are two top 23 teams according to the College Football Playoff committee.

Start with this – can Notre Dame slow down the run?

It got hammered on by Michigan for over 300 rushing yards, but that was more about a power game in bad weather. Navy isn’t going to blast away. Other than that, the Irish run defense has been a rock after tightening up over the first few weeks. The line is doing a better job at getting into the backfield, and the linebacking corps is in place to clamp down on the outside when Malcolm Perry gets going.

The running back-who-plays-quarterback is past the 1,000-yard mark with five straight 100-yard games. He’s also hitting the deep ball, averaging close to 24 yards per completion when he’s able to catch defenses cheating up.

The Navy running game is working at the highest level, but the Irish aren’t going to get popped in the interior, and expect several plays behind the line to force enough long third down plays to be a problem.

Ian Book and the Notre Dame offense will be more methodical than spectacular, but he’ll be just sharp enough and accurate enough to keep the Perry and company on the sidelines a bit. Navy will still dominate the time of possession battle, and it’ll push the Irish hard, but Book and the O will take over the fourth quarter with a few late scores to pull away and survive.

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are bowl eligible, so now it’s about who can get the better bowl slot, and who can stay alive in the American Athletic Conference title chase.

Temple came up with the win it absolutely needed to have over USF last week, and it still has a date against Cincinnati up next. For now, just getting by Tulane and its dangerous defensive front would be a good enough step to stay alive.

Tulane lost to Navy and Memphis, but it still gets to make some noise in the conference with UCF and SMU to go. The Green Wave have the rushing offense to take control of the game on the road against a Temple run defense that’s been good overall, but got hammered by UCF for almost 400 rushing yards a few weeks ago.

The Owls have been wildly inconsistent, while Tulane has had problems against the teams with elite offensive styles. Navy’s running game, SMU’s passing attack, and Auburn being Auburn were able to get by the Green Wave. That’s it.

However, after getting embarrassed by UCF a few weeks ago, Temple clamp down just enough with a tough defensive effort to go along with a sharp day from QB Antony Russo to survive a tough four quarter battle.

And now we’re here.

After the firing of Willie Taggart, and after missing out on a bowl game last year, and after all of the underwhelming performances and disappointing moments, this is when the Florida State program should be able to exhale and enjoy itself.

At least, it had better. The 5-5 Noles have to win this week with a trip to Florida to follow. This is when they have to get bowl eligible.

Alabama State isn’t bad. It pushed UAB really, really hard in a 24-19 loss to start the season, and it’ll be bring an aggressive defense that’s one of the best in the FCS against the pass.

The problem is the Hornet offense – it’s not good enough to throw any sort of a scare into a Nole defense that could use the break.

FSU will get this done early.

Coming of a 346-yard day against Boston College, James Blackman will throw two first quarter touchdown passes, and the bowl eligibility party will be on.

What’s Going To Happen

For all intents and purposes, Buffalo is now out of the MAC title hunt.

It needed Bowling Green to shock Miami University on Wednesday night – instead of getting blasted 44-3 – and now the only hope is to win out and pray for an all-timer of a college football miracle. MU has to lose to Akron next week – that’s not going to happen – and at Ball State.

But just getting bowl eligible with a win here would be a plus. There will likely be more eligible MAC teams than spots, so getting to seven wins would be huge, eight would cement another game.

First, UB has to take care of its last road game of the season just to get to six wins.

Kent State can still get bowl eligible, but that would require winning out against UB, Ball State and at Eastern Michigan. Even at 3-6, the team has been far more competitive in Year Two under Sean Lewis, with the offensive style starting to kick in just enough to be dangerous.

The problem is a Buffalo offense that’s become unstoppable over the last few weeks.

The Bull lines will be the difference. The pass rush will own a Kent State offensive front that’s not stopping anyone, the O that put up 43 points in each of its last two games will be balanced, and on the road, the D will be on the sidelines for most of the game.

Kent State is next-to-last in college football in time of possession, and Buffalo is sixth. The Bulls will hold on to the ball for well over 35 minutes, grinding out scoring drives late to overcome another strong outing from Golden Flash QB Dustin Crum.

The big problem for Kent State? It’s not going to come close to getting 100 yards on the ground – a must to pull this off.

Why North Carolina Will Win

North Carolina will go bowling.

Mercer is up next and a date at NC State is right after – the Tar Heels should be good enough to roll through those two – but at 4-5, getting a win against Pitt to muddy up the Coastal is a must.

The offensive production is there – at least enough to deal with this Panther team – there aren’t a slew of mistakes, and Sam Howell and the passing game are getting it done enough to stretch the field.

Somewhat quietly, Howell has thrown for 348 yards or more in three of his last four games with 15 touchdown passes and just three picks. Pitt’s secondary has been excellent statistically, but it hasn’t dealt with a passing attack like this since slipping past UCF.

The Panthers don’t score in bunches and don’t have the juice to come back if the Tar Heels get up fast, but …

Why Pitt Will Win

The defense really has been terrific.

Again, the secondary isn’t exactly dealing with Patrick Mahomes on a regular basis, but it’s been effective enough to get the job done against the mediocre offenses. The run defense has been the brick wall, helped by a fantastic pass rush to pad the stats.

Pitt has allowed just one team – Duke – to run for over 90 yards in the last six games, and it hasn’t given up more than 167 yards to anyone all year. Howell might be ripping it up, but the Tar Heels have to tun the ball effectively to win.

They’re 3-0 this season when rushing for 200 yards or more, 1-5 when being held to fewer. Again, this Pitt defensive front isn’t giving up much of anything, and it sure isn’t about to get hit for 200, so …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s unbelievable how North Carolina plays close game after close game after close game. Eight of the nine games have been decided by six points or fewer, and it has come out on the wrong side in five of them.

The Panthers need to win out – at Virginia Tech and Boston College close out the regular season – and need a Virginia loss along the way to take the Coastal for the second straight season. They’ll get Part One of all that in a low-scoring game owned by their defense.

And, of course, it’ll be tight.

Michigan State Basketball is a 6.5-point favorite over Seton Hall

MSU will be the favorite on the road against Seton Hall on Thursday.

Michigan State Men’s Basketball is heading on the road to face Seton Hall and they will be a 6.5-point favorite to win that match-up. Seton Hall will be without star Myles Powell. They will be looking to Sandro Mamukelashvili, Shavar Reynolds, and Quincy McKnight to fill that void for the Pirates.

Why Indiana Will Win

Indiana has the offense to not only keep up with the Penn State offense, but to all but duplicate what Minnesota was able to do.

It’ll be asking too much for IU QB Peyton Ramsey to complete 18-of-20 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns like Tanner Morgan did last weekend in Minneapolis, but … it’s actually not. Ramsey is hitting 72% of his throws and averaging over eight yards per attempt.

The Hoosiers won’t be afraid to take their shots down the field and take a few chances – when they have to.

The offense is fantastic at controlling the clock, the offensive line has held up well against the better pass rushes, and the defense has quietly been doing its part allowing 310 yards per game.

As good and as effective as Penn State might be, its offense isn’t built to go off and put 45 on the board. This should stay in range all game long for IU to have a shot deep into the second half.

Why Penn State Will Win

The running game is a big part of what makes Indiana go.

It’s not Wisconsin when it comes to pounding away, but it’s just effective enough to make defenses worry a wee bit, running for eight touchdowns over its last three games.

Of course, there were plenty of issues and problems against Ohio State besides just the lack of a ground game, but so far IU is 7-0 when running for 100 yards or more, and 0-2 – Michigan State being the other loss – when it doesn’t.

Penn State has allowed 100 rushing yards or more just three times and it’s giving up a mere two yards per carry.

On the other side, QB Sean Clifford has to build on his big-yard day against Minnesota – throwing for 340 yards as he did a wonderful job of keeping things moving – but after throwing three picks all year, he gave up three including the game-sealer. The Indiana secondary is solid, but it’s only been able to come up with three interceptions on the season and just one in the last five games.

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana is going to provide a whole lot more of a fight than Penn State might like.

The Hoosiers will move the ball well, but they’ll struggle to close off drives with points. The running game won’t work, there will be a few red zone misfires, and the Nittany Lions will be able to pull away after after the offense hits two second half home runs to get past the doldrums from Minneapolis.
