Why Memphis Will Win

The Tigers are on fire with a six-game winning streak with a suffocating defense that hasn’t allowed more than 70 points since January – and only once in 2021 – and an O that’s been fine from the field.

There’s not a whole lot happening from three, but the Tigers are fantastic on the boards, force a ton of takeaways, and they’re second in the nation in three point defense. Cincinnati is the only team in the last five to hit more than 20% from three.

Why Houston Will Win

Memphis is fantastic defensively. Houston is better.

The Cougars are the second-best in the nation in scoring defense and fifth in the country on the boards. They attack, force a ton of mistakes, and they’re almost as good at defending the three as the Tigers are.

The three losses on the season were all on the road, they’ve been dominant at Fertitta, and they’ve been hitting everything from the field no matter where they’re playing. They get to the rim and can get on the move, but they’re also better from three.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s the first time these two have played with the winner – most likely – to finish second in the regular season American Athletic Conference race.

At home, Houston will be a wee bit stronger and more consistent, and they’ll be far, far better on the free throw line over the last five minutes. This is where the Cougars start to get into a stronger groove before the tournaments kick in.

The University of Memphis football program has paused all football activities after several people tested positive for COVID-19

The University of Memphis announced on Friday that it will pause all of its football activities after several people within the program tested positive for COVID-19.

According to an article from the Memphis Commercial Appeal, the outbreak might have come from players allegedly being on a party bus after last week’s 37-24 win over Arkansas State. From the report, players were tested three times before the game and then right after, but now upwards of 20 players have reportedly tested positive.

However, Memphis defensive tackle O’Bryan Goodson disputes the report.

But …

Now the American Athletic Conference opener against Houston for Friday night the 18th is in question, as is the following Friday game against UTSA on the road.

Arkansas State is expected to play at Kansas State this weekend.

If the Memphis date with Houston can’t go as scheduled, there would have to be some reworking to do to get it in. Houston doesn’t have any open dates the rest of the way outside of October 3rd.

If Memphis and SMU move their game – scheduled for October 3rd – to October 10th when both the Cougars and Tigers could move their game to the third.

Memphis at Houston: Three things you need to know

  1. Memphis picked up a narrow 60-59 victory Feb. 22 on their home floor against Houston. A win for the Tigers would give them the four-seed in the upcoming AAC Tournament.
  2. The Tigers lead the country with a 36.1 defensive field-goal percentage, and they rank third in the nation in blocked shots with 6.0 per game. Freshman Precious Achiuwa leads the team with 1.9 BPG, and he also leads the nation among freshmen with 10.6 rebounds per contest while posting 15.5 points per game.
  3. The Under has cashed in four straight for Memphis, and the streak was kicked off in their low-scoring win over Houston Feb. 22. The Cougs have hit the Under in three of their past four games, and 12 of their past 15.

Moneyline (ML)

The Houston moneyline (-500) is not a good play. This will be a defensive battle, and laying five times the return is just not good for the long-term health of your bankroll. If anything, Memphis (+360), who won the first meeting, would be a better option. But the best course of action is to AVOID.

Against the Spread (ATS)

MEMPHIS (+9, -110) won the first meeting and should be able to keep it close in what is expected to be a defensive grind like the first head-to-head contest. Houston (-9, -110) enters the game with a 2-4 ATS mark across the past six outings, and while the Cougars are 4-1 ATS in the past five at home, they have managed to cover just twice in the past five when favored by nine or more.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 135 (-110) is the best bet between these two defensive-minded clubs. Houston ranks 16th in the land with 62.3 PPG allowed, while limiting the opposition to a 38.3 field-goal percentage, good for ninth in the country, and a 28.8 3-pointer percentage, 11th in the nation. Memphis allows just 64.9 PPG, and it is fourth against the three while leading the country in defensive FG%.

What’s Going To Happen

Houston has to win its final three games just to become bowl eligible, with at Tulsa and Navy to close. On a run of three losses in its last four games, it’s had problem, but it’s been feisty.

Now it has to deal with the firepower of a Memphis team looking to take a giant step forward to winning the West.

The Tigers have won three straight since losing to Temple, getting the key win over SMU two weeks ago and beating Navy in late September. It controls its own destiny in the race, but it still has to go to USF and host Cincinnati.

The Tiger passing game has been unstoppable at times, it’s among the nation’s most efficient attacks, and the ground game is balancing things out from time to time, too. Houston has been getting roasted through the air, allowing two touchdown passes or more in every game and over 200 yards against everyone but Tulane.

Clayton Tune and the Cougar passing attack will get its licks in. Memphis has a better defense than it’s being given credit for, but it’ll allow more than 300 yards as Houston comes up with a strong performance at home. However, the lack of a pass rush and inability to generate enough key stops will let Memphis to keep on firing.

It’ll be a battle for about 40 minutes, and then the Tigers will hit two home runs to pull away.
