July 2022 game releases: Upcoming titles being released this month

Cyberpunk, playing as an animal protagonist, and faithful sports sims are the main themes this month.

The summer months are always busy when it comes to new game announcements but not so much if we look at actual releases. In the last few weeks, we had the Summer Game Fest 2022, an Xbox & Bethesda Games showcase, and a Nintendo Direct Mini, all packed with games to look forward to until the end of this year. All of these are months away though, while in this list, we’ll focus on what’s coming this month. And there are still quite a few titles to be excited about.

Sports fans are getting the latest official F1 game and Matchpoint Tennis Championships is finally releasing to all platforms. There’s plenty of brand-new games coming, a few existing series are getting their next chapter and a cyberpunk stray cat adventure seems poised to steal the show.

All in all, cyberpunk, playing as an animal protagonist, and faithful sports sims are the themes of the month. Here are the best video games releasing in July 2022.

Final Fantasy 14’s mom, Ameliance, gets player-led makeovers

She even requests in dialogue that something to make her husband “blush” would be excellent.

This week’s Final Fantasy 14 weekly reset allowed players to finally play dress-up with Ameliance, one of the game’s most popular NPCs. As part of a quest-line which sees you delivering items to her to assist in the education of refugees, Ameliance eventually requests clothing. This is the in-universe reasoning for something that has been true in the majority of these sorts of quests in the past – allowing for the equipping of NPCs in player gear.

As you can imagine, the fiends of the FF14 community were immediately excited upon finding out this would be the case for the mother of Alphinaud and Alisaie, two of the game’s most popular characters. She even requests in dialogue that something to make her husband “blush” would be excellent.

This has, of course, led to plenty of bunny girl outfits, summer dresses and the like, as well as a few funnier and sometimes even less lewd options. Let’s take a look.

Here’s the standard which everyone expected and received. There were plenty of responses to that too. This isn’t real but it should be. There’s lots (and lots, and lots, and lots) on the same theme, if you’re, ahem, intrigued.

There are also those who chose to get Ameliance a little more battle-ready. Here she is in the recently-added PvP only armor set. Another with her ready to protect her family at all costs, and yet more where ‘red’ was the theme of the day.

There is then the remaining two sub-genres of FF14 glamors – comfy and weird. On the former there’s also sorts of mom-drip and the latter is mostly horse costumes and fish. There’s even the odd wedding dress.

It takes all sorts to make an MMO.

Activision Blizzard acquires new studio to help on World of Warcraft

Activision Blizzard has announced its purchase of the studio Proletariat.

Activision Blizzard has announced its purchase of the studio Proletariat, confirming that the employees will be helping the development of one of the publisher’s most popular IPs, World of Warcraft.

Proletariat is the studio which released Spellbreak, a free-to-play FPS battle royale based around the theme of magic. Unlike other battle royale games, such as Fortnite, there are no guns. Instead, players can fire elemental spells, levitate, teleport, or turn invisible. Following the acquisition, Proletariat announced that the game would be closed down sometime in early 2023.

As reported by VentureBeat, the 100 employees currently at the studio will become part of Blizzard and will work on World of Warcraft including the Dragonflight expansion. This is the largest acquisition Blizzard has made within the last decade, as the company tries to increase its workforce in order to improve the expansion’s quality, while sticking to previously decided developmental deadlines.

[mm-video type=video id=01fvcry25cq61pfnqdt3 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fvcry25cq61pfnqdt3/01fvcry25cq61pfnqdt3-b73fc5e6702ea85f00519f9e585e04e2.jpg]

Activision Blizzard’s stock and player base has plummeted over the past few years due to numerous abuse allegations levied against the company. The publisher itself blamed the loss in profits on recent Call of Duty titles failing to meet its standards of quality, and delays in Blizzard’s release schedule. The only studio under the publisher which has met its predicted targets was King, creator of Candy Crush Saga.

In order to improve the company’s prospects, Activision folded studio Vicarious Visions, developer of the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, into Blizzard, in order to increase progress on the Diablo franchise. Within this series, the studio is currently developing Diablo 4, and free-to-play Diablo Immortal, a mobile game which has been heavily criticized for its predatory microtransaction practices.

Blizzard usually releases a large expansion for World of Warcraft every two years, in order to maintain the interest of its online player base. As the last expansion, Shadowlands, was released in 2020, Blizzard is expected to release Dragonflight by the end of this year. However, currently there is no release date announced for the additional content.

This is a Rare-tier weapon, but with a bit of luck and our instructions below, you’ll be tearing apart players with the Ripsaw Launcher in no time.

The Day Before developer defends its use of unpaid labor

Speaking to Eurogamer, Fntastic clarified its position.

The Day Before, the most wishlisted game on Steam with over 3 million users interested in the zombie MMO, recently revealed that it is created with the help of unpaid workers.

Despite the game’s success, developer Fntastic recently added a page to its website asking for help from ‘volunteers’ to help complete the project. This caused backlash from many, as the studio revealed tasks including localization, and programming features would be carried out by volunteers.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Fntastic clarified its position. In response to the use of the term ‘volunteer’ for both unpaid and salaried worker the company said, “Essentially, the word ‘volunteer’ comes from the Latin word ‘voluntarius’, meaning ‘willing’ or ‘of one’s own choice’, anyone who is open to life can become a volunteer with Fntastic.”

[mm-video type=video id=01fzny9t0h257ghn2b6c playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fzny9t0h257ghn2b6c/01fzny9t0h257ghn2b6c-c8683d079f320c479f289e7dcf2319e3.jpg]

However, when the studio went on to describe its employees it became clear that roughly 30% of work completed for the studio is carried out by unpaid workers. There are 100 salaried employees currently at the company working as “engineers, artists, and HR professionals”. However, work which is usually also done by paid workers, whether internally or by contracted teams, is being completed by “40 external US and worldwide volunteers,”.

Defending its decision to use volunteers over hiring employees for highly-skilled positions, Fntastic went on to explain, “We ordered localization for Propnight from a well-known large studio specializing in translation,” it continued “ As practice has shown, the result of their work was not so perfect. Most of it had to be redone with the help of our enthusiastic volunteers.”

While some of the work mentioned such as “organizing our Discord communities” can be done by unpaid volunteers, in popular games, and at large studios it is usually the tasks of hired community managers. The studio also claims that Propnight’s volunteers also “found bugs,”, and “dealt with cheaters”,  which is usually the task of paid QA testers and customer support.

Defending the decision to use unpaid staff for roles such as QA, localization, community management, and customer support, Fntastic said that one of its unpaid volunteers is now a salaried employee. However, with 40 volunteers currently working for the team this is an exceedingly low transferral rate.

Half-Life 2 is playable on Nintendo Switch via Portal

Portal: The Companion Collection was recently released on Switch and modders have already found a way to run Half-Life 2 through the game.

Portal: The Companion Collection was recently released on Nintendo Switch and already the modding community has found a way to run Half-Life 2 through the game.

As posted on Twitter, modder OatmealDome has discovered a way to get the sequel to Valve’s popular Half-Life running on the Switch. Using the copy of the original Portal included in Portal: The Companion Collection, they were able to edit in a playable version of Half-Life 2 using assets from NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios.

According to Oatmeal, the reason they could get the game working so quickly is that “Portal 1 is basically a glorified mod of Half-Life 2”. They went on to give the example that the Portal player code is based directly on the player code of Half-Life 2.

[mm-video type=video id=01fnp5g2j69gbjtbnsav playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fnp5g2j69gbjtbnsav/01fnp5g2j69gbjtbnsav-8a38f9e6b09f1d12cccb7df9934477f4.jpg]

The mod is by no means perfect. It crashes occasionally, not all of the maps are playable, NPC animations and world cameras don’t work, and most devastatingly, the mod lacks the ability to save. However, as it has been less than 24 hours since the game’s launch, what has been achieved so far is incredibly impressive.

Watching their gameplay footage it seems to play very smoothly when it’s not crashing. In the three-minute video we see our silent protagonist, Gordon Freeman, running around shooting down head crabs and driving in his buggy just like we remember. While the modder admits to having edited out the loading screens, it seems to play at a very stable frame rate.

It should be noted that this is definitely not intended by neither Valve nor Nintendo. In order to play something like this you require a modded Switch. Messing with the software on your console invalidates your warranty, and Nintendo won’t help you if it breaks.

It’s unclear whether Oatmeal will continue on with their project or if it was just a proof of concept. However, it shows that if Valve were to sell a Half-Life collection for Switch, it would be surprisingly easy given that the Portal architecture is already complete. Promising news for fans of alien shooters.

Bandai Namco Japan is selling swanky samurai teacups for $50

Bandai Namco is partnering with a high-end Japanese ceramics maker for the tie-in cups.

Bandai Namco has announced its collaboration with Arita Porcelain, a high end ceramics manufacturer, to release four limited edition teacups to tie in with its game Touken Ranbu -ONLINE-.

Touken Ranbu -ONLINE- is a musou style mobile game – think any game which has ‘warriors’ in the title – which is aimed towards women. The way it attracts women to play is by being absolutely stacked with achingly gorgeous, half-naked samurai lads. What pairs well with playing with your favorite sexy samurai other than sipping elegantly on some tea emblazoned with his crest?

[mm-video type=video id=01g0gx1hsamqtwyp18d8 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g0gx1hsamqtwyp18d8/01g0gx1hsamqtwyp18d8-12eab5d70711803d5201aadf63e244b8.jpg]

As spotted by Famitsu, the range features four different designs based on the characters Ishikirimaru, Akashi Kuniyuki, Buzene, and Nikkari Aoe. Each cup is also tied to a traditional Japanese plant, bamboo, plum blossom, chrysanthemum, or orchid. The cups are in fact remarkably similar. With each design, only the color palette changes and the golden crest at the bottom of the cup.

The teacups are very very much a set, however, those who want to own them all will have to purchase them separately, and that doesn’t come cheap. Each cup costs ¥4,950 (roughly $50) meaning that the set will be an eye-watering ¥19,800 (or almost $200).

Still, it’s a small price to pay to elegantly sip your tea, sitting across from your lifesize samurai cutout and/or body pillow. Looking deeply into your husbando’s eyes and remarking on how beautiful his family crest is as you reach the leaves at the bottom of the bowl.

The set was expected to sell out quickly due to limited numbers, and a quick look at the website feels like that is the case. It’s no longer listed there despite pre-orders only opening a few hours ago. However, it could be that as a niche product it is not being advertised outside of Japan, despite Bandai Namco’s usual policy of offering international shipping.

It’s okay though. The marketing team missed a trick by not including the seductive swordsman friends right there on the side of the cup, in all of their half-dressed glory.

Sony is moving into the PC gaming hardware market

Sony has announced a new line of PC gaming hardware.

Sony has announced a new line of PC gaming hardware, which is compatible with the PS5, in the hopes of moving into the PC gaming market.

The new brand of hardware is called Inzone and currently includes two kinds of 27” monitor and three types of gaming headset. According to a report by The Washington Post, this hardware line has been in the works since 2019, with Sony attempting to break into the lucrative esports community. The name is said to refer to gamers being “in the zone”.

Speaking to the Post, Sony’s president of home entertainment and sound, Kazuo Kii, explained Sony’s decision, “We are entering the gaming gear industry with monitors and headsets at an exciting time, since gaming and esports have gotten even more popular over the last few years.”

[mm-video type=video id=01fqmkvpe72fy4fkr7z8 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fqmkvpe72fy4fkr7z8/01fqmkvpe72fy4fkr7z8-77d3a7140e2cf62f623d83d655c12e49.jpg]

Sony has historically stuck to the console gaming market, often doing little to promote playing its games on PC. Customers used to be able to stream Sony games to PC via the PlayStation Now service. However, since the rebrand of its subscription services, players now have to pay out for the most expensive Premium service to do the same.

Despite this, Sony has slowly been seeing the advantages of courting the PC gaming market. In January, the PC port of Sony’s exclusive God Of War became its most popular game on Steam. It quickly overtook the 2020 PC port of Horizon Zero Dawn, which previously held the title of Sony’s most popular port.

Kii explained that he hopes that the quality of Sony’s products will encourage gamers to see the company as a key figure in the PC gaming market, despite historically shunning this section. “We are not saying we are not focusing on the PS5 users,” he said. “But because we are latecomers to monitors and headphones for [the] gaming segment, we believe we have a chance to catch up.”

Sony’s monitors start at $529 for HD and $899 for 4K, while the headsets range from $99 for wired, and go up to $299 for a set of wireless noise-canceling cans.

Pokémon Go studio Niantic announces NBA All-World, pre-register now

The Pokémon Go developer is making a brand new NBA AR game for mobile devices, and you can pre-register today.

NBA fans will probably be slightly confused but nonetheless enthusiastic about the latest NBA game announced today. NBA All-World comes from Pokémon Go developer Niantic, and looks set to introduce the NBA to a global audience.

Niantic is known for augmented reality, or AR, games, which take into account your real-world location when playing. Pokémon Go is the best example of this, with local landmarks becoming PokéStops or Gyms for players to gather at and interact with.

[mm-video type=video id=01g5b72qw7zqp1fyfsw1 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g5b72qw7zqp1fyfsw1/01g5b72qw7zqp1fyfsw1-08004c870c55a2646bf6e51f15c21fb8.jpg]

NBA All-World is likely to replicate this formula, though how it will do so is unclear at this time. The only footage we’ve seen of All-World so far is a teaser trailer that depicts the planet turning into a giant basketball.

The tagline on the video reads “unleash a new era of hoop,” which is about as vague as the teaser itself. There’s some more information of the NBA All-World website:

NBA All-World unleashes the new era of Hoops. Get outside, step into the sneakers of today’s NBA stars & go 1v1 against the best players in the world. Explore your neighborhood while competing in mini-games to become King of the Court. Be on the lookout for sneaker & gear drops to flex your style & increase the performance of your squad. Represent where you’re from along with the best ballers in the world.”

In the site’s FAQ section it’s confirmed that the game will be entering soft launch soon and will initially be available in limited markets for beta testing as they improve the game for an eventual global launch. Hopefully this means the US is included in the soft launch territories.

You can now pre-register on the NBA All-World website. We’ll have more information on the game for you as we get it.
