Digimon Survive sales pass major milestone after less than half a year

Sales of the Digimon visual novel have passed half a million, making it one of the more popular Digimon games in recent years

Global Digimon Survive sales have surpassed 500,000 copies, Bandai Namco and developer Hive announced on Twitter. The Digimon visual novel first launched in July 2022, less than six months ago, making this one of the more popular and successful Digimon games in recent years.

For reference, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and its sequel sold 1.5 million copies worldwide as of October 2020. Both games originally launched in Japan in 2015 before seeing staggered releases in Europe and North America on PS4 and the PS Vita and then on Nintendo Switch in 2019. Digimon Survive launched simultaneously worldwide on all platforms.

As a tactical RPG and visual novel hybrid, Digimon Survive was a departure for the series, which usually alternates between games focused on monster taming and more traditional JRPGs like the Cyber Sleuth games. It also adopted a darker tone than most Digimon games, delving into the tortured psyches of its main cast as they struggled to return from the digital world alive.

Whether Hive will get to make another game in the same style is uncertain. The next brand-new Digimon game will return to the series’ taming-and-breeding roots as a Digimon World game, though Bandai is also porting Digimon World: Next Order to Nintendo Switch and PC in February 2023.

A new(ish) Digimon World game is coming in 2023

Digimon World: Next Order is headed to Switch and PC in early 2023, six years after the RPG first launched on PS4

Digimon World: Next Order is the next Digimon World game headed to Nintendo Switch and PC, and it’s coming up fast. Bandai Namco announced Digimon World: Next Order will release Feb. 22, 2023, for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, after it first launches on PS4 in 2017.

“Between its gripping narrative, enticing world, and of course, its lovable Digimon, Digimon World: Next Order represents the very essence of the Digimon World franchise,” Summer Nguyen, Bandai Namco Entertainment America brand manager, said.

Where Digimon Survive, the most recent Digimon game, took the series in a new direction with its tactical battles and visual novel-style story, Digimon World: Next Order hearkens back to the monster-catching RPG’s early days of taming, raising, and evolving.

You set out as one of the DigiDestined, a special monster tamer, in plain speak, and try to stop the monstrous Machinedramon and the chaotic forces it unleashed.

Digimon World: Next Order includes over 200 Digimon to befriend, but unlike recent outings in the Digi-world, you have to put a bit more effort into these relationships. As a tamer, you tend to your Digimon’s needs, feeding and training them to help them reach their full potential. That potential includes spectacular evolutions in combat, so it’s well worth the investment.

Digimon Survive: All Digimon locations

Here are some of the earliest locations for each Digimon that you can find in each chapter via Free Battles.

Digimon Survive is a unique twist on the monster collection formula — a visual novel with strategy game elements, players will often find themselves wanting a specific enemy that they come across. Survive has a “negotiation” system, similar to a Shin Megami Tensei title. Players talk to a Digimon they want, and are asked a question — they can then respond with any of four answers, each with different effects.

A correct response will increase your affection for that Digimon by one or two pips, but an incorrect response will decrease it by one or two pips. If you fail to reach three pips after three questions, the Digimon will not talk with you any longer and the battle will continue. However, finding specific Digimon can be a hassle, because there is no in-game location tracker.

Encounters are split into two types — Free Battles, which can be fought at any time in a chapter, and Shadow Battles, which are randomized and have to be located via the Camera. Some Digimon can only be found on certain routes, so you may have to do several playthroughs to find the specific Digimon you want.

There are three categories of Digimon: Vaccine, Data, and Virus. Vaccine Digimon respond well to Moral choices, while Data Digimon respond well to Harmonious choices, and Virus Digimon like Wrathful choices.

July 2022 game releases: Upcoming titles being released this month

Cyberpunk, playing as an animal protagonist, and faithful sports sims are the main themes this month.

The summer months are always busy when it comes to new game announcements but not so much if we look at actual releases. In the last few weeks, we had the Summer Game Fest 2022, an Xbox & Bethesda Games showcase, and a Nintendo Direct Mini, all packed with games to look forward to until the end of this year. All of these are months away though, while in this list, we’ll focus on what’s coming this month. And there are still quite a few titles to be excited about.

Sports fans are getting the latest official F1 game and Matchpoint Tennis Championships is finally releasing to all platforms. There’s plenty of brand-new games coming, a few existing series are getting their next chapter and a cyberpunk stray cat adventure seems poised to steal the show.
