GAME NOTES (PDF): Wyoming New Mexico

ODDS (via OddsShark): Utah State – 5

SP+ PROJECTION: Utah State by 2.2 (55% win probability)

One team that was projected to be competing for a Mountain West title and another that was supposed to be somewhere near the bottom. Despite just one loss in conference, Utah State seems to be under-achieving with projected NFL first-rounder Jordan Love not living up to the Heisman-hype and Wyoming is surprising others after a tough loss to Boise State last week.

One thing that both teams have in common for Saturday’s contest, is there is still a lot on the line. The Cowboys might be bowl-eligible, but six wins guarantee nothing like last year’s missing bowl invite shows. Meanwhile, the Aggies are one win away from technically being in that same boat with the next two contests being the biggest of the season playing the top-tier teams of the Mountain Division in back-to-back weeks.

Here’s a look at three keys to a Cowboys win:

Three Keys to a Wyoming Victory

1. Forget the last game

Cooper Rothe‘s missed field goal in overtime still stings, but it’s time to move on from Boise State to see if the Cowboys can build on a strong conference showing against the Broncos.

Wyoming has a lot of positives to build on from last week as most aspects of the Cowboys game plan was solid and produced results against a top-25 team. Xazavian Valladay proved can be consistent as the work-horse (37-124 yds) back and the defense held the Broncos to well over 100 yards less than their average.

So despite the loss, Wyoming is still on track to possibly surpass it’s projected win total of 7 wins at the start of the season with three games left.

2. TVW Revenge

Tyler Vander Waal‘s last start of the 2018 season was against the Aggies. He had an abysmal 38 yards in the air prior to being pulled for Sean Chambers. He even had a chance to come back late in the game with a chance to at least tie after Chambers led the team to that point. It didn’t happen and the Cowboys fell by eight points.

So, this game has Vander Waal’s name all over it with a chance to redeem that performance after a year of growth and a new mindset that has produced results.

The sophomore quarterback had 160 yards against Boise State and ran in for a score. More important than the numbers was his presence. He made throws consistently (15-23) and showed a versatile confidence from short to long passes.

3. Contain Love

In comparison to 2018, Love is not having a great year. But that’s just perspective because the junior quarterback still has over 2,000 yards passing and 11 touchdowns. A far cry from his 32 scores a year ago.

Wyoming will have to at the least contain the highly-profiled slinger if they want to bring home the Bridger Rifle. Stopping Love will be tricky as the Cowboys have been prone to give up the big plays, but the secondary has shown strides in recent weeks.

One thing that Wyoming did well at the beginning of the season was force turnovers and Love has actually thrown one more interception this year than a touchdown, so there’s that. Senior defensive backs Tyler Hall and Alijah Halliburton should get ready for the pick to help their cause.

Prediction

This game could be considered a toss-up, but the scale definitely leans toward the Cowboys as the big-deficit losses mount up for the Aggies. These next two weeks will be huge for both teams, but Wyoming just might have the advantage all-around in Saturday’s game. The Cowboys defense might give up yards, but they’ll also make the big plays when they count.

Wyoming 30, Utah State 28

What’s Going To Happen

Utah State just has to keep winning.

It needs a little help to take the Mountain Division, but it still gets Boise State – that’s next – and it needs to win this week to get bowl eligible. Lose, and then it’ll get scary if it can’t get by the Broncos.

Wyoming is already bowl eligible, and it’s still sort of in the Mountain title hunt, but for now, it’s about getting a few more wins just to be assured of a decent bowl slot.

Can the Aggies slow down the Wyoming running game?

They were ripped up by Air Force and allowed 200 yards or more in three of the last five games, and lost all three. They’re now 0-4 when giving up 160 yards or more on the ground, and 5-0 when they allow fewer.

The Wyoming style isn’t sexy, but it works. When it runs for more than 160 yards, it’s 6-0 – and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

Utah State will never have the ball – it’s last in the nation in time of possession – and it’s going to have a problem with the tremendous Wyoming pass rush.

The Cowboys get it done on the road.

Air Force at Colorado State

7 p.m. ET, TV: ESPN2 | Get Tickets
Line: Air Force -10 | Staff Picks

Final Score: Air Force 38, Colorado State 21

Recap:

The Rams let Air Force hang around for too long. While an Air Force fumble on their opening drive led to a 63 yard scoop and score for linebacker Mohamed Kamara, the Rams were unable to capitalize on solid defensive performance early.

The insult to injury was the 99 yard pick six by Air Force defensive back Zane Lewis as O’Brien was trying to pull Colorado State within a score late in the fourth quarter.

After going up 14-0, the Rams were then outscored 38-7 and likely saw their slim bowl game chances disappear into the cold Fort Collins night.

New Mexico at Boise State

10:15 p.m. ET, TV: ESPN2 | Get Tickets
Line: Boise State -28 | Staff Picks

Final Score: Boise State 42, New Mexico 9

Recap:

On the Boise State front, this was a good game to try to get everything going right before playing traveling to take on Utah State and a rising Colorado State team. For New Mexico, this was a chance to just get back to some normalcy after tragedy struck the team a week ago.  The Broncos got off to a fast start with Chase Hatada striping the ball from New Mexico quarterback Tevaka Salanoa-Tuioti that was ran back by Sonatane Lui for a touchdown. Boise State followed that with three more in the first quarter to break out to a 28-0 lead. Issues with consistency arose in the second quarter when Jaylon Henderson, Boise State’s third starter at quarterback this season, struggled and threw an interception and fumbled on back to back drives. Once the Broncos scored two more times in the second half, preservation was the goal and most of the starters started to get phased out of the game.

Realizing it’s New Mexico’s defense, the Broncos moved the ball well with Henderson at quarterback, but there were some spots in the game where execution was lacking.  Henderson did well throwing for almost 300 yards and 3 touchdowns while having the 1 interception. Defensive lineman Sonatane Lui put on another great game recovering 2 fumbles, one of which he returned for a touchdown, while on offense Khalil Shakir caught and threw for a touchdown and tallied 100 total yards.

It wasn’t all good though as STUD Curtis Weaver left the field late in the second half and was later seen in a boot.  Also, Hank Bachmeier and Chase Cord didn’t see any action and George Holani and Robert Mahone saw limited action. Mahone had a knee brace on and didn’t look to be healthy on the few carries he had and Holani didn’t appear to have an issue so it was likely due to the game getting out of reach of New Mexico quickly.

While it could have been cleaner, this was the kind of performance that the Broncos were looking for from the game.  This should help the offense build its confidence going into a tough final two games of the season.

Who: Utah State University Aggies vs North Carolina A&T University Aggies

When: Friday, 11/15/2019, at 7:00 PM MST

Where: Dee Glen Smith Spectrum: Logan, Utah

TV: Available to stream: UtahStateAggies.com/watch

Radio: 1280 the Zone

Friday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum the Aggies will be facing… the Aggies?  That’s right, the Utah State University Aggies will be squaring off against the Aggies of North Carolina A&T.  Utah State will look to keep its unbeaten season alive while the other Aggies will be looking to pull off a major upset on their journey West to Utah.

After a slow start against Montana State, the Logan Aggies have been on fire.  Not only winning their last two games but absolutely demolishing their opponents.

Beating in-state rival, Weber State, 89-34; and Rocky Mountain neighbor, Denver University 97-56.  All eyes will be on Logan Aggie senior guard, Sam Merrill, as he continues an impressive final season.  Through 3 games he is averaging almost 19 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5 assists. All this while sitting out most of the second half against Denver and Weber State.

Another Logan Aggie to keep your eye on is starting sophomore forward, Justin Bean. After serving as a spark plug off the bench last year, Bean has started all three games for Utah State this season.

He suffered a fractured nose during preseason and has been wearing a facemask. During the first half of the season opener he was hit in the face breaking two teeth.  Tough as nails, he continued playing. After the final buzzer sounded, he underwent oral surgery to repair the broken teeth. Thus far he is averaging 13 points and 11 rebounds per game.

It is likely that Utah State will be without the reigning Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year, sophomore center Neemias Queta.  Queta is still recovering from a knee injury he suffered during U20 play this past summer. He has yet to appear in a game for Utah State this season.  Utah State fans eagerly await his return. Once he is back USU will feature three players over 7 feet tall (Neemias Queta, Kuba Karwowski, and Trevin Dorius).

The other Aggies are coming off a blowout loss to Western Carolina University, losing by a score of 90-64.  North Carolina A&T will feature 6’8” forward, Ronald Jackson, who is leading the way averaging just over 13 points a game this season.  Jackson, a senior, started off the season with a 17-point game in a loss to UNC Greensboro. He is very capable of getting buckets, but has struggled in their previous two games.

Early this season the Logan Aggies have established their style of play; it consists of gritty defense and a high-powered offense.  If they continue this brand of play it is likely North Carolina A&T will not be able to keep pace with the No. 17 team in the nation

If the other Aggies want to keep it close, they will have to be firing on all cylinders offensively and defensively.  It appears that Utah State will walk away with an easy victory as long as they don’t overlook their opponent.

 May the best Aggie win.

Boise State and Air Force are at the top

The top two spots are non-negotiable this week and they both come from the same division. Boise State sits at the top with all of the first-place votes and then Air Force comes in next with all voters choosing those two teams as their first and second choice.

The Falcons moved up from three to two and the Broncos took the top spot all to themselves after defeating Wyoming and also San Diego State dropping a game to Nevada.

The Aztecs drop from two to the fourth spot with Wyoming moving up one spot to No. 3 despite losing in overtime to Boise State. The rest of the rankings see a mishmash of teams jumping up or down one spot.

Teams are fighting for bowl eligibility

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 12th week of Mountain West football in what we are dubbing “trophy week” as so many games have a trophy on the line this weekend. Things get started with the Old Oil Can as Fresno State takes on San Diego State on a Friday night game. The Bulldogs need two wins to become bowl eligible and this a game that might be close than some think.
On Saturday the UNLV Rebels host the Hawaii Warriors for what we call the “Golden Pineapple” which is far superior compared to the “Ninth Island Showdown.” Wyoming and Utah State battle for Bridger’s rifle in what could be a defensive showdown, Colorado State is fighting for bowl eligibility vs. Air Force for the Ram-Falcon trophy. The final game of the day does not have a trophy on the line as Boise State takes on New Mexico.

Aggies set to terminate an old rival Tuesday night before returning to Disney+ binge

WHO: No. 17 Utah State (2-0) vs Denver (1-1)

WHEN: Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 7pm (MST)

WHERE: Logan, Utah • Dee Glen Smith Spectrum (10,270)

TV: MW Network

RADIO: Aggie Sports Network

SERIES RECORD: USU leads the all-time series 54-37, including a 19-5 advantage at home.

ODDS: Utah State -23.5

Preview

A pair of throwback rivals will face off tonight in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum for the 92nd time in series history. The Denver Pioneers, winners of three straight against the Aggies, are fresh off a double-digit win over UVU. The Aggies, still ranked no. 17 in the country, were last seen discarding Weber State like a used dryer sheet.

The name to know heading into this Tuesday night matchup is Ade Murkey, a four-year starter and leader of an otherwise young rotation reaching at least nine players deep. Murkey averaged 11.5 ppg last season and boasts a blazing hot start this fall with 48% fg shooting against Denver’s first two opponents (Colorado State, Utah Valley).

Joseph Lanzi and Jase Townsend are expected to handle the bulk of the non-Murkey points scored for the Pioneers, combining for 38 against the Wolverines last week.

With some familiarity between USU’s coach Craig Smith and Summit League opponents from his days at South Dakota, this should prove to be a matchup full of rich storylines for fans to explore while the Aggies run another team out of the building by halftime.

Utah State is off to a healthy 2-0 start to justify its preseason ranking, albeit one that included a scare against Montana State in the season opener. Paraphrasing coach Smith in this week’s press conference, a handful of games every year seem to showcase a team’s floor and potential ceiling — and it appears USU has already given fans a peek at both.

The Aggies average 85 points per game through two games this season while shooting over 47% from the field and holding opponents to just 33% shooting. Also worthy of note — after only 13 assists against Montana State, coach Smith’s increased emphasis on ball movement and exploiting open backdoor cuts produced 26 assists on 37 made shots against Weber State.

Saturday’s matchup against the Wildcats also produced several opportunities for the USU supporting cast to really shine. Abel Porter recorded his first double-double, Justin Bean lead all scorers with 18 mere days after oral surgery corrected his front teeth getting bashed in and Utah State captured its largest margin of victory over a D-I opponent in nearly 50 years.

Sam Merrill’s continued excellence and starts from regulars Porter, Bean and Brock Miller should serve up an easy win tonight as the Aggies continue their five-game home-stand to kick off the year. Expect also to see big man Kuba Karwowski in the starting lineup while Neemias Queta nurses a knee injury still without a timetable.

Prediction:

Utah State 86, Denver 57
