2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year

QB Grayson McCall, Jr. Coastal Carolina

The star in the emergence of Coastal Carolina football, McCall has been one of the nation’s most efficient and effective passers over the last two seasons hitting 71% of his throws for close to 5.400 yards with 53 touchdowns and six picks.

He’s able to run – 870 yards and 11 career touchdowns – hit the deep ball, and get the high-octane attack rolling at will. Coastal Carolina has some rebuilding to do, but McCall will make everyone around him better.

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year

LB Carlton Martial, Sr. Troy

The newly configured Sun Belt is loaded with do-it-all linebackers, but no one does-it-all more more than Martial. He’s not all that big, but the 5-9, 210-pound flash gets all over the field as a bit of a hybrid playmaker.

Going into his fifth season, he already has 443 tackles, ten sacks, 47.5 tackles for loss, and five picks with seven forced fumbles on the resumé.

ULM Warhawks Preview 2022

There was a moment.

No one was expecting anything coming off an 0-10 season and without a winning season since 2012, but all of a sudden ULM looked like it was on track to go bowling in Terry Bowden’s first year.

The Warhawks shocked Liberty and beat South Alabama for a 4-3 start, had two winnable games in the last five, and then …

4-8.

But to be fair, four of those last five were on the road and three of those were against LSU, Louisiana, and Appalachian State. The other two games – at Texas State and against Arkansas State – were close.

Now there are just enough veterans to make a push for those six wins, even if it’s going to take something miraculous against an even tougher schedule to make that happen.

ULM Warhawks Preview 2022: Offense

There were too many problems on third downs, the downfield passing attack wasn’t there, and the offensive line was a turnstile. However, the offense had a few decent moments and there’s just enough experience back to be better. However …

The offensive line has the be a LOT better, and it has to do it without left tackle Willie Tyler off to Rutgers. Two starters are back and there’s a little help from the transfer portal with Zarian McGill an important get at center.

The running game didn’t have any room to move, but the two main backs return. Andrew Henry led the team with 482 yards and four scores, and Malik Jackson ran for 451 yards and added more burst. Jackson, though, will likely work mostly at receiver after flirting with the transfer portal.

This should be Chandler Rogers’ show to run – he likely won’t be splitting time like he did last year. The sophomore was third on the team in rushing and led the was with 1,311 passing yards with nine touchdowns and three picks.

The delightfully-named Boogie Knight earned All-Sun Belt status as the team’s leading receiver, but he’s not alone with most of the top targets back for Rogers to spread it around. That includes TE Zach Rasmussen – three of his catches went for touchdowns.

ULM Warhawks Preview 2022: Defense

The offense struggled, and the defense didn’t do a whole lot to help. There wasn’t enough push into the backfield, and the pass defense was among the worst in the country, but the group did a decent job of taking the ball away and wasn’t totally awful against the run.

The linebacking corps in the 4-2-5 has a thumper in Zack Woodard. If he doesn’t lead the team in tackles, he’ll be close, Quae Drake adds some experience and hitting ability on the outside, and the hope is for Harding transfer Carl Glass to work in a hybrid role like another safety on the field.

The front four might be one of the teams earlier strengths. There’s good size, and what the depth lacks in experience it makes up for in bulk. Top end Ty Shelby is done. but the tackle combination of Caleb Thomas and Quincy Ledet should be able to hold up.

The secondary struggled, so losing corner Josh Newton to TCU and S Nick Roberts to SMU isn’t that massive. However, this group needs to find playmakers in a big hurry. It’s not a total do-over, but it’s not far off around third-leading tackler Jabari Johnson.

Sun Belt spring football rankings and predictions with best and worst case scenarios for every team

Sun Belt college football rankings and predictions with the realistic best and worst case records and quick analysis – the 2022 spring version.

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot bigger, cooler, and more interesting with a shocking expansion that should take the conference up another level.

FCS powerhouse James Madison gets to join in right away, and Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss were able to leave Conference USA and get in for the 2022 football season.

Here’s the problem – several Sun Belt programs that made strides last year are going to have tougher schedules to deal with. Several teams should be better, but might not have the results to show it.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

19. James Madison, welcome to the show

The conference has only been doing football since 2001, and it was always the land of the paycheck programs – the ones the big boys scheduled for an easy 55-3 win on Homecoming.

In one of the shockers of the conference realignment changes over the last year, the Sun Belt wasn’t picked off in the expansion run. Instead, it added James Madison from the FCS and snagged Marshall, Southern Miss, and Old Dominion from Conference USA.

It was a battle to see if Conference USA could hold on to the Thundering Herd, the Golden Eagles, and the Monarchs through the football season, but the divorce is final, and those three are getting remarried right away to go along with a fun James Madison program.

How ugly did it get? Both Conference USA and the Sun Belt released their 2022 schedules including those three teams, but the Sun Belt has their teams.

The Sun Belt East will be made up of Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, James Madison, Marshall, and Old Dominion. The West will be Arkansas State, Louisiana, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas State, Troy, and ULM.

No, it’s not time for the SEC to start shaking, but it’s an amazing story that the Sun Belt is not only surviving, but it’s getting a whole lot stronger and more entertaining.

Louisiana vs ULM Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s a rivalry game and all that, but just how much is Louisiana going to want to crank out the energy?

It had the Sun Belt West title wrapped up almost right away, and now it’s all about next week’s showdown with Appalachian State for the Sun Belt title.

For all of the great things the Ragin’ Cajuns have done, and for all of the wins, the offense hasn’t cranked it up all that much – the running game hasn’t hit 170 yards in three of the last four games.

ULM doesn’t have a turnover problem, it doesn’t get flagged enough to matter, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Louisiana Will Win

Louisiana should be able to control the ball and the game as long as it wants to.

ULM was looking like a potential threat in the Sun Belt West race, and then came the four-game losing streak to end all of that.

There isn’t enough of a ground game to matter, the offense is the worst in the Sun Belt, and there aren’t enough long, sustained drives take Louisiana out of its game.

As long as Levi Lewis and the Ragin’ Cajun offense don’t take any big chances and keep it nice and conservative, the points will come. It also helps that …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana doesn’t turn the ball over.

It only gave it away eight times on the year, and it’s not going to start screwing up this week against the Warhawks.

Yeah, it’s a rivalry game and ULM will pull out all of the stops, but after the first half it won’t be enough.

Beating ULM and going 11-1 are important, too. The goal will be to put this away fast and be on to the Sun Belt title game.

LSU vs ULM Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

It’s a funky Warhawk team coached by Terry Bowden and an excellent staff that got extremely creating throughout the year just to get to four wins.

There isn’t any one thing this team does well, but it does a great job at not screwing up. It doesn’t have a huge turnover issue – outside of a few rough games – it takes the ball away, and it’s one of the best teams in the country at limiting penalties.

Just how much is LSU going to care?

This isn’t the final home game – that’s next week against Texas A&M. The program is playing out the string losing five of its last six games – with only the strange win over Florida as a brief respite of fun.

When ULM comes up with three takeaways, it usually wins. LSU might not be ultra-focused, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why LSU Will Win

ULM doesn’t have enough of an offense to keep up if LSU give even a decent effort here. The Warhawk offensive line gives up a ton of plays in the backfield, there isn’t a downfield passing game, and LSU should be able to take advantage of it all.

The Tigers are great at getting into the backfield, the pass rush should own the game for stretches, and when it comes to penalties, LSU is the best in the nation in fewest yards on flags.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

After such a painfully disappointing season, LSU is going to want to have some fun.

It’s been a rough run, but now there’s a break for the first time since beating Central Michigan back in mid-September.

The offense will be balanced against the ULM defense, the defense will come up with enough third down big plays to matter, and the team will keep alive bowl hopes with Texas A&M to close things out next week.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arkansas State vs ULM Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

Can the offense ramp it back up?

It hit a wall over the last month against the stars of the Sun Belt – at least the teams with the great defenses – but the offense is still dangerous. There’s still a passing game there, and it should bust out this week against a ULM defense that’s among the worst in the country at stopping teams from throwing.

ULM doesn’t have a consistent offense, either, it’s awful on this downs, and again, the defense has issues against teams that can throw, allowing 249 yards or more against everyone by Liberty.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why ULM Will Win

The Arkansas State defense continues to be a tad sketchy.

Just as the offense has stalled out, the defense hasn’t been able to pick up the slack. It continues to be the worst in America allowing 548 yards per game having the roughest time against the run.

ULM has been able to throw well over the second half of the season, but it needs the balance to do what it wants. The offense is good when it gets its chances, it doesn’t have a big problem with turnovers, and Arkansas State – along with everything else – struggles in the turnover margin.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

ULM will stay in the hunt for a bowl game.

It has four wins, it’ll get the fifth by rolling well early against the porous Arkansas State D, and then it’ll come down to the road games at LSU and Louisiana.

So, basically, ULM has to enjoy the home finale. It’s going to be a shootout, but ULM will control the game a bit more.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

ULM vs Texas State Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

There’s still a possible bowl game to play for, but it’s almost certainly not happening without a win here.

The Warhawks hit a snag with a blowout loss to Appalachian State, but that doesn’t stop all the positives for a team that has a whole lot of problems.

Forget about third downs on both sides of the ball, and the pass defense is a rumor, but the team doesn’t beat itself. There aren’t a lot of flags – there aren’t any – and winning the turnover margin cures a lot of ills.

Texas State is almost as bad on third downs and it screws up a whole lot with turnovers and flags.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Texas State Will Win

The Bobcats are struggling more and more offensively, but they need to run well to pull up fast.

ULM has been hammered by teams that commit to the ground game. It allowed 250 rushing yards or more in four of the last five games, and Texas State has to give it a shot.

It only got to 200 yards once, and it was the win over an okay South Alabama team.

They ran the ball 48 times against the Jaguars, and won. They ran 44 times against FIU, and won. They ran 44 times against Incarnate Word, and lost, but it was a fun fight.

Offenses have run on ULM 42 times or more in four of the last five games.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

No, really. How is ULM doing this?

It absolutely has to come up with takeaways to make everything else easier. It came up with three turnovers against South Alabama, Liberty and Jackson State and won. It came up with three in the opener against Kentucky and lost – but that was Kentucky – and it generated a total of two in the other four games and lost.

Texas State is -7 in turnover margin with 12 giveaways in the last four games.

ULM vs Appalachian State Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

Where did this come from?

In one of the best stories of the 2021 season, ULM went from nothing to being in the mix for a bowl game by winning four of its last six games.

How?

Eliminating mistakes has meant everything. The team doesn’t beat itself – there aren’t a lot of penalties or turnovers, and that’s combining with an offense that’s ramping things up as the season has gone on.

The Warhawk O has produced progressively more over the last four games, highlighted by a shocking upset over Liberty and a 555-yard day against South Alabama.

Freshman QB Chandler Rogers stepped in and has been amazing, throwing eight touchdown passes and just one pick over the last three games. For all of the great things Appalachian State has done, it’s allowed 200 passing yards or more in every game, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The ULM run defense is about to be hammered.

The team has been sharp enough and good enough to overcome a slew of problems, but Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, and Liberty all ran well on the Warhawk D, combining for over 850 yards and ten touchdowns over a three week span before the South Alabama game.

Appalachian State won’t do anything crazy here. Hand the ball off, hand it off again, and get out of the way. The team is 5-0 when running for 160 yards or more.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can Appalachian State keep the turnovers to a minimum?

ULM isn’t going to screw up – it’s +8 in turnover margin on the year and +4 over the last two games – and Appalachian State has turned it over 13 times and is a -5 over the last two games.

It’s going to be a good fight with a whole lot of offense, but Appalachian State will keep the production going from the win over Coastal Carolina to continue to push for a spot in the Sun Belt Championship.
