Travis Kelce hosting Amazon’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? reboot will be exhausting

Only this time, it’s ‘Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?’ And yes, probably.

When it comes to the saturation point of Travis Kelce content, the limit has yet to be found.

The future Hall of Fame tight end has seen his fame quotient multiply throughout the past year, most notably as the beefy beau of one-woman economy Taylor Swift. But his influence expanded beyond gossip rags and breathless fan Tweets. He won a Super Bowl, bombarded televisions with ads for State Farm and Pfizer and drove page views for websites thirsty enough to cover his Coachella appearance (it’s us, hi, we’re the problem, it’s us).

This led, naturally, to the demand for more Kelce. So, for the first time since E!’s non-beloved dating extravaganza Catching Kelce, he’ll be hosting a reality(ish) show. And since Jeff Foxworthy’s legacy cannot be approached, Kelce won’t be hosting Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?; he’ll be hosting Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?

“I grew up loving game shows, and I’m excited to be following in the footsteps of so many TV icons by hosting my very first one with Are you Smarter than a Celebrity,” Kelce said in the press release boasting Amazon’s newest avenue to funnel money toward the NFL’s next media rights deal. “The original show is a great success, so to be bringing a new format with everyone’s favorite celebrities to the screen, will definitely be entertaining. I’m just happy to be on the hosting side of the equation here and excited to see how these famous faces keep up.”

You know what? It’s … fine. I’m excited to see which celebrities show up to have their brains tacitly compared to an 11-year-old’s. It’s also a tried-and-true game show narrative, as Hollywood Squares was effectively tic-tac-toe that hinged on how stupid contestants thought various D-list celebs were. It’ll probably be inoffensive summer night viewing, the kind you watch at a family vacation before all the kids go to sleep.

And Kelce is a charismatic, likable person who’ll do just fine as host of a fairly basic quiz show. He’s not being asked to process Jeopardy! answers. The toughest thing he’ll have to do is explain the Pythagorean theorem to Logan Paul or whatever.

It’s just, hoooo buddy, this is so much Travis Kelce. Ah well. Can’t blame the guy.

The Knicks found a way to make The Sopranos uncool in unearthed LeBron James recruiting video

The Sopranos, the Knicks, LeBron James; everyone looks a little dumber thanks to this video.

The year is 2010. The Sopranos has been off the air for more than two years. LeBron James is approaching one of the biggest free agent decisions in NBA history. Somehow, these two things are intertwined.

We know this because Pablo Torre, ESPN scribe and host of Pablo Torre Finds Out, found the pitch video Sopranos stars Edie Falco and James Gandolfini made in the New York Knicks’ futile effort to land James. It is both surprising and awful, an effort that makes everything, from a storied NBA franchise to an all-time great basketball player to one of the greatest television shows ever made, a little dumber from being associated with it.

The video opens with The Sopranos’ iconic logo and a title card suggesting it’s two years after the show’s (initially divisive and currently appreciated) finale. Some extremely clunky dialogue informs us that Tony and Carmela have joined witness protection. The FBI has wisely placed them in New York City, where the mafia has never operated and this high profile informant could in no way be recognized.

Well, fine, whatever, David Chase didn’t write this. And that’s wildly obvious from the script basketball conjunctivitus/nepo baby/barely formed human/Knicks owner James Dolan possibly penned but definitely signed off on.

“Life’s good here, Carm,” Gandolfini says while smiling directly into the camera. “Even if we are in the witness protection program.”

“Now we’ve just gotta find a place for your friend LeBron to live,” replies Carmela, positing a world where the New Jersey gangster who once had a panic attack when he found out his daughter was dating a mixed-race classmate and the world’s most famous basketball player are friends. She eventually pulls up a stock photo of Madison Square Garden on her Macbook as Gandolfini and Falco mug for the camera. Despite being two of the most New Jersey people in the world, they’re now fully invested in the neighboring state with which they once warred because these characters are merely props in a billionaire bidding war and everything is terrible.

Thus, two Jersey icons sell themselves out in the name of New York basketball. Like most things Knicks, this was a high profile failure. James picked the Miami Heat in a televised special nearly as awkward as the video above.

An ode to Space Ghost Coast to Coast, the groundbreaking comedy show that just turned 30

Believe it or not, Space Ghost Coast to Coast just turned 30.

Thirty years ago, television changed forever, one awkward, fake late-night interview at a time.

The groundbreaking adult cartoon series Space Ghost Coast to Coast premiered on Cartoon Network 30 years ago on April 15, 1994, pioneering an entire generation of alternative comedy and opening the possibility for so many of the very strange, very funny television comedies we love today.

Mike Lazzo’s seminal talk show comedy featuring a twist on Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning superhero Space Ghost (featuring George Lowe’s iconic voice performance) and all of his very odd co-workers (the late, great C. Martin Croker’s Zorak and Moltar, the stellar Andy Merrill’s Brak etc.) broke the mold on what people expected out of existing intellectual property.

It took the gleeful irreverence for existing characters from Who Framed Roger Rabbit and spliced it together with the dry, silly 1990s slacker energy for people who stayed up late to watch David Letterman and Conan O’Brien, worked with MTV on in the background and could recite the scripts to their favorite Simpsons episodes.

It parodied the funky dynamics of late-night talk shows and perfectly captured the wacky comedic moment of its decade. That weird, wonderful lightning in a bottle still powers so much all these decades later. If you watched cartoons as a kid in the Nineties, you came across this one at some point, and it absolutely shook up your equilibrium for what was possible for the medium.

Without Space Ghost interviewing various celebrities in his space-set studio with sassy interruptions from Zorak in the band pit and Moltar working the broadcast tech, we probably wouldn’t have gotten basically anything on Adult Swim or have quite gotten the entire class of alt-comedy that dominates after hours television.

This excellent, bizarre show was just a game-changer for the way people created television for adults, the way we interact with past pop culture and the lengths we can stretch the most beautifully stupid ideas and most ludicrous sight gags into something delightful and lasting. Happy 30th birthday, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and thanks for the memories.

And always remember: Nobody cares, Moby!

Jason Sudeikis did a ‘you can’t see me’ celebration during epic LSU-Iowa March Madness clash

Ted Lasso was loving what he saw in Albany.

Comedian Jason Sudeikis was in attendance for one of the best games of the year as the Ted Lasso star took in the Elite Eight matchup between the LSU and Iowa women’s basketball teams. Monday night’s highly anticipated game was a rematch of the 2023 National Championship game, which was won by Angel Reese and the Tigers.

MORE: Ryan Ruocco delivered the funniest call of a thrilling Caitlin Clark 3-pointer during LSU vs. Iowa

Sudeikis is no stranger to supporting women’s hoops, with the Horrible Bosses actor frequenting games on both the pro and college level. Late in the fourth quarter, Sudeikis could be seen replicating the “you can’t see me” celebration made famous by wrestler John Cena and adopted by a lot of athletes, including Iowa’s incredible star Caitlin Clark.

The celebration was the same as the one Reese used to taunt Clark in last year’s loss, but the record-setting Hawkeye got revenge in 2024 with a 94-87 victory to make the Final Four.

The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White could play Bruce Springsteen in a new A24 biopic and that’s so fun

Jeremy Allen White would actually make a fantastic Bruce Springsteen.

Jeremy Allen White has become one of the biggest stars in television and could soon play one of the biggest stars in rock-and-roll history.

White, who received a Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards for his role on FX’s The Bear, is reportedly in talks to portray Bruce Springsteen in an upcoming film.

He is considered the “top choice” for the role, according to Deadline, and “talks are underway” for the entertainment company A24 to make the movie.

RELATED: Bruce Springsteen filmmaker Thom Zimny goes behind the scenes of ‘No Nukes’ concert film

The movie is called Deliver Me from Nowhere and it is a “narrative feature” about Springsteen’s album Nebraska (1982). It is based on the recent book by Warren Zanes, which published in 2023.

According to Deadline, meanwhile, negotiations with White for this biopic have not yet begun. But it is worth noting that Springsteen and his longtime manager, Jon Landau, are both “actively involved” in the project.

Scott Cooper, the writer and director of Crazy Heart (2009) starring Jeff Bridges, will reportedly write and direct Deliver Me from Nowhere.

If it works out between all parties, White (who is from Brooklyn) would begin filming the movie in New Jersey after he wraps production on the forthcoming season of The Bear.
