Northern Illinois vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

It wasn’t always pretty, and the team had to hold on, but Northern Illinois managed to get past Eastern Illinois 34-27 with a good offensive balance, no turnovers, and two takeaways.

The running game hasn’t been unleashed yet.

Tulsa didn’t do anything on the ground in the 40-37 double overtime loss at Wyoming, and now it’s up to the defense that bent but didn’t break until late to keep the big plays through the air to a minimum.

As long as the rotation of Huskie backs can keep the chains moving and the clock rolling, everything should work. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Tulsa Will Win

The Huskies have to get to Davis Brin.

There wasn’t any pass rush against Eastern Illinois, and now NIU has to deal with a quarterback who threw for 460 yards and three touchdowns in Laramie.

Brin was great, three receivers hit the 100-yard mark, and now it’s all going to hammer down on a secondary that came up with two picks last week, but struggled late.

The bigger problem for NIU? Third down defense. It couldn’t get off the field against EIU – it allowed 8-of-12 third down conversions – and Brin was terrific at moving the chains.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s still a bit puzzling how Tulsa lost to Wyoming. It was controlling the game, the passing attack was fantastic, and it couldn’t put it away.

That won’t be a problem this week.

The Northern Illinois ground attack will work better than it did against the Panthers, but it won’t be enough to keep up on the road.

Tulsa vs Wyoming Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

Let’s just say it’s going to take a little while for the Wyoming passing game to get going – if at all.

It was a rebuilding year after a slew of key personnel losses and changes, and it showed in the rough 38-6 loss to Illinois. The defense struggled, but the biggest problem was the passing attack with Andrew Peasley going 5-of-20 for 30 yards and a pick.

Tulsa’s biggest strength early on might be the secondary with a slew of great safeties and the corners helped by a potentially sold pass rush.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Wyoming Will Win

Illinois is going to be good.

It might not be Big Ten Championship good, but dealing with a fired up Big Ten team on its home turf is asking a lot for a Wyoming team going through so many big changes.

No, the passing attack isn’t going to light anyone up, but the ground attack hit the Illini for six yards per carry with Titus Swen and Peasley both finding room to move.

Tulsa is going through a rebuild of its own, and didn’t get the benefit of a Week 0 game to get some hitting out of the way. That, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Tulsa is undergoing a slew of changes, too.

There might not be as many drastic things happening as there are on the Wyoming side, but it’s going to take a little bit for the Golden Hurricane to be back to the level of last year.

Wyoming will run well, the passing game will be a bit more effective, and the defense will be far, far better against the run than it was against Illinois.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year

QB Clayton Tune, Sr. Houston

Can Tune be for Houston what Desmond Ridder was for Cincinnati last year? The numbers should be strong – SMU QB Tanner Mordecai might have the better passing season, though – but it’s more than that. Tune is the veteran leader on what should be the best team in the American Athletic Conference – and the stats aren’t bad, either.

He hit 68% of his passes for 3,546 yards and 30 touchdowns and ten picks, ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns, and led the way to a terrific 12-win season with a bowl victory. Now Houston is looking for even more.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year

LB Deshawn Pace, Jr. Cincinnati

Call this a projection that Pace takes his game up a few notches and becomes an even bigger terror for offenses.

An underappreciated all-around hybrid linebacker – he only earned Honorable Mention All-AAC honors last year – the 6-2, 215-pounder was all over the field making 95 tackles with 9.5 tackles for loss and four picks, highlighted by a huge one against Indiana. It’s not really his role, but if he becomes more of a pass rusher, he’ll be a gamewrecker.

American Athletic Conference Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

American Athletic Conference predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The American Athletic Conference is about to go through its final season with a whole lot of fun before all the changes come.

If you want wacky, and if you want unpredictable, here you go.

The future Big 12 programs – Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF – should be the stars, but others are going to be just good enough to provide a push or even trip them up. Unfortunately, the Cougars don’t play the Bearcats or Knights.

Get ready for the inconsistencies with teams like East Carolina and Memphis being up and down, depending on the timing of the biggest games, SMU and Tulane will be interesting, and USF and Navy should be just improved enough to pull off a few interesting performances.

Remember, the American Athletic Conference doesn’t have divisions. The top two teams in the final standings will play for the title. It should come down to the last few games with the drama at a high level up until the very end.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane Preview 2022

Just when it seemed like the Philip Montgomery era was coming to a close with a three-year run dip going 9-27, the Golden Hurricane picked it back up with a big 2020 with an appearance in the American Athletic Conference title game.

Just when it seemed like that was all a fluke with an 0-3 start as part of a 3-6 record – including losses to UC Davis and Navy and a struggle against USF – boom. Four straight wins and a bowl victory for a second straight winning season.

However, there were several close calls, it could’ve easily have been a 3-9 season with a few bad breaks, there’s plenty of rebuilding to do, and …

Whatever. Tulsa has found a way to be more than just competitive, and this year it has to get everything together fast to show that it’s going to make some noise in the new and far easier AAC next year when Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF bolt to the Big 12.

The schedule is manageable enough to get to six wins and a bowl game, but again, it’s going to take some reworking. It’s nothing Montgomery and this program haven’t dealt with before.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane Preview 2022: Offense

The offense all worked just fine. It might not have always been efficient, and there were way too many turnovers, but it finished second overall in the conference averaging 442 yards per game. Now the attack has to convert those yards into more points, failing to get to 24 on the board seven times in the first ten games.

There are a whole lot of lost parts, but there’s a decent returning base to work around as long as the Golden Hurricane can restock the …

Offensive line. It needs work. Great last year for the running game and good enough in pass protection, Tulsa loses two NFL starting-caliber tackles in Tyler Smith and Chris Paul and only returns one starter. There’s size, and there are options, but this is going to take fall camp to revamp.

Leading rusher Shamari Brooks is done, but Anthony Watkins averaged over seven yards per carry with 634 yards and four scores, and Demeric Prince is a potentially strong No. 1 back coming off a 524-yard, five-touchdown season.

The passing attack will need a little time to come up with new parts. It was great at pushing the ball down the field, and QB Davis Brin is back after throwing for 3,254 yards and 18 touchdowns. However, he threw 16 picks and has to be a bit more accurate.

The top seven yardage receivers last year were seniors, but two of them are back. JuanCarlos Santana was second on the team with 50 catches for 674 yards and there scores, and Keylon Stokes is a No. 1 caliber target who’s back after missing most of last year hurt. On the way is Isaiah Epps, a good-sized veteran from Kentucky.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane Preview 2022: Defense

The defense loses even more talent and parts than the offense does, but there’s help from the transfer portal and a few key top tacklers back after finishing fifth overall in the AAC in total and scoring defense, allowing 371 yards and 27 points per game.

The linebacking corps needs more options. Justin Wright led the team with 82 tackles in an all-star season, but the outside brings in two new starters and the depth isn’t quite there.

Leading pass rusher Anthony Goodlow is back at one end job after coming up with six sacks, but tackle Jaxon Player left for Baylor and there’s not a ton of size on the front threw with the massive Tyarise Stevenson done on the nose.

On the way is Ani Izuchukwu from Mississippi State and Jayden Simon from Colorado to try adding some options up front.

The secondary should be the early strength of the defense. It’s got a great all-around corner in Tyon Davis – he should be one of the statistical stars of the AAC – and the safety trio of Kendarin Ray, Tyree Carlisle, and Jaise Oliver is experienced and strong against the run.

As we get into the specifics and all the research coming out of spring football, here’s a first-look spring version of the rankings and thoughts about every American Athletic Conference team.

Cincinnati, UCF, Houston. All three are good enough to be considered the top team in the league coming into 2022, but there’s improvement among several other teams who’ll put up a fight.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

6-6 teams that had to win out to get to a bowl game tend to try harder.

There’s no lack of fight in a Tulsa squad that came this close to knocking Cincinnati out of the College Football Playoff picture, and then won its last three games to get here.

There’s nothing fancy about what the Golden Hurricane like to do. They want to run if possible, hit a few deep shots down the field to take a few chances, and then hope for the defense to take the ball away to make up for all the turnovers.

Tulsa has enough offensive firepower and balance to keep up any pace, but the attack was among the worst in the nation at turning the ball over. However, Old Dominion made almost as many mistakes.

This is a fun Monarch team that roared through the second half of the season with five straight wins after a 1-6 start to make this a wonderful first run – after not being able to play in 2020 – under head coach Ricky Rahne.

Turnovers are a big, big problem for Old Dominion – more on that later – but the downfield passing game is great, the special teams came up with a whole lot of big plays, and now the team is playing with house money.

SMU vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

Tulsa needs this to go bowling, while SMU is looking to move on.

The Mustangs had their shot at making something big happen last week against Cincinnati, and instead they got rocked 48-14 to lose their third game in four weeks.

Even so, head coach Sonny Dykes is reportedly going to become the new TCU head man.

SMU will go bowling, but will it have the intensity after the way the last few weeks went?

Tulsa has won its last two games, battled well against Cincinnati, and it’s got the right makeup to pull this off on the road. The defense hasn’t been a rock, but the running game has been great, there’s a good offensive balance, and for the most part, team has bene able to control games despite not owning the time of possession battle.

However …

Why SMU Will Win

SMU will want to make amends for the Cincinnati disaster in a big hurry.

The passing game that was so great throughout the year was held to just 66 yards and the offense failed to get to 200.

Tulsa’s pass defense has been okay at best, the offense turns it over way too much, and as good as the team has been, it doesn’t have the firepower to keep up if SMU gets going.

The Mustangs have the No. 1 offense in the American Athletic Conference, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Again, Tulsa needs this for the sixth win and bowl eligibility.

It might not be the type of team that makes its own breaks, but the running game is about to go off on the Mustang defensive front.

Cincinnati was the first team to run for 200 yards this season on the Mustangs, and Tulsa will be the second.

Temple vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

The Owls haven’t had a whole lot go their way since the win over Memphis five games ago, but it gets a Tulsa team that manages to play up or down to the competition.

The Golden Hurricane pushed Cincinnati to the brink, and then struggled with Tulane. It beat Memphis, and slipped past USF. All four wins were by a touchdown or less, and five of the losses were by eight points or fewer.

Temple has a decent enough pass defense to be a bother, and it’s able to get into the backfield from time to time, but the real key will be takeaways. Tulsa has a huge turnover problem, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Tulsa Will Win

Temple doesn’t score.

The offense has come to a dead stop – it can’t keep things moving.

It’s awful on the ground, there aren’t enough easy third down chances, and it’s not putting points on the board when it does get its shot. It hasn’t scored more than a touchdown in four of the last five games and hasn’t scored more than 14 points in seven of the ten.

Tulsa might have a slew of issues, but it’s got enough of an offense to put this away fast with a few good scoring drives.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

The Golden Hurricane are not only playing on Senior Day – the last home game of the year – but they’re still alive for a bowl game. Win this, stun SMU next week, and they’re in.

They’ll take care of Part One without much of a problem – after the first half. Tulsa will go Tulsa and make this difficult on itself with two turnovers, but it’ll pull away late.
