Tulsa Golden Hurricane: Key To The 2022 Offense

Chill out the turnovers.

The defense was able to do enough keep the turnover margin from getting out of hand, but the offense made things way too hard on itself with too many giveaways.

Tulsa turned it over 24 times last year with two or more in nine games and multiple giveaways in six straight games to close out the regular season.

The wins were still there, but the three turnovers were a killer in the season opening stunner of a loss to UC Davis, and the two lost fumbles were devastating in the loss to Cincinnati.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane: Key To The 2022 Defense

Be better on third down conversions.

The defense was able to improve at getting off the field as the season went on, and it was able to still beat Memphis and get by Old Dominion in the Myrtle Beach Bowl despite having third down problems, but in general, the team had problems when offenses kept the chains moving.

Tulsa started the season 0-3 after allowing teams to combine to hit half of their third down tries, Cincinnati was able to settle things down by converting 58% of its changes, and Navy pulled out the upset by keeping everything moving.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane: Key Player To The 2022 Season

OT Jaden Muskrat, Soph.
Is he ready to step in and star? Tulsa had a pair of NFL tackles to work around last year with Tyler Smith and Chris Paul two fantastic pounders – you don’t just replace talents like that.

The 6-3, 303-pound Muskrat has to step in for Smith, the 24th overall pick in the draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He spent last year as the understudy, but he could kick inside if the Golden Hurricane get big production in fall camp from …

Tulsa Golden Hurricane: Key Transfer

OT Darrell Simpson, Sr.
And go ahead and throw in Brody Wisecarver from Illinois. Tulsa needs to do some shuffling up front, and if Simpson – a 6-8, 348-pound former big recruit for Oklahoma – and/or Wisecarver can make a push for a starting tackle job, that changes things up and gives the staff a slew of options to try working on the guard situation.

Tulsa Key Game To The 2022 Season

Cincinnati, Oct. 1
Tulsa had them. It had the shot to knock off Cincinnati, and it couldn’t close in last year’s 28-20 thriller. It also gave the Bearcats a push in the 27-24 loss in the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championship, and has now lost eight of the last nine in the series going back to the season-opener in 1980.

It’s the Golden Hurricane’s AAC opener, it’s at home, and it’s coming before going away from home for three weeks and coming off a trip to Ole Miss.
