East Carolina vs Tulane Game Preview

Why East Carolina Will Win

The Pirates are piling up wins. The passing game has been solid enough to overcome the shaky defense, there aren’t a lot of turnovers, and no one in the American Athletic Conference is better on third downs.

There’s a nice combination of things happening with their style – they’re explosive, but they’re also controlling the ball and the clock.

Tulane doesn’t come up with enough of a pass rush to be a problem, which is only part of the reason why the defense isn’t forcing takeaways, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Tulane Will Win

The Green Wave have their groove back.

After a 2021 when nothing seemed to go right, they managed to come up with a huge performance in a win over Kansas State and bounced back from a tough home loss to Southern Miss with a fantastic rally to beat Houston.

What’s going right? The offense has been balanced, the defense has been solid, the pass D leads the nation, and there aren’t a slew of mistakes – they’re keeping the penalties to a bare minimum.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

East Carolina is going to push the Tulane secondary that hasn’t faced a slew of passing teams.

Houston is the first offense that can push the ball a bit and Tulane gave up over 200 yards for the first time all year. The Pirate offense is going to wing it around enough to make this fun, but the Green Wave attack will do its part with enough balance to keep up.

Like it did against Houston, Tulane will pull this off late.

Houston vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

Okay, Tulane, who exactly are you?

Are you the team that’s fourth in the nation in total defense, fourth in the nation in pass defense, and eighth in the nation in scoring D?

Are you the team that stuffed the Kansas State team that went on to beat Oklahoma a week later, or are you the team that couldn’t get past Southern Miss despite playing better in almost every way?

The defense gets a Houston team that’s making every game an adventure. There isn’t a penalty the Cougars don’t like to commit – with ten or more in every game – the pass defense is non-existent, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Houston Will Win

The offense is working.

It struggled in the loss to Texas Tech, but the passing game was accurate over the last two weeks against Kansas and Rice, and the running game is starting to perk up.

The team might be a disappointment considering the high expectations to start the season, but there’s still plenty of time to get on a roll, win the American Athletic Conference, and possibly get the New Year’s Six bowl bid as long as the team can finally start playing consistently well.

Tulane might have a killer defense, but it’s not doing much to generate a pass rush and it’s not taking the ball away. Give the Houston skill parts time and big things happen.

With all that said, to be nice and polite about it …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

WAKE UP, HOUSTON.

The team has so many great parts, talent, and potential that it should be far better than it played over the first four weeks.

Tulane isn’t quite as weird, but the last two games have been confusing – Southern Miss shouldn’t have been a problem at home after the way the D played against Kansas State.

Houston’s offense will be just good enough when it has to be to get out of this alive, but like every other game it won’t be easy. The Tulane defense is the real deal and will keep it close throughout.

When the Cougar defensive line absolutely has to get into the backfield, it’ll do it. It just won’t play well enough early to not need the big stop late.

Southern Miss vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The Golden Eagles got on the board with a total destruction of Northwestern State, but they weren’t playing all that poorly before the 64-10 win.

The passing attack was okay against Miami, and the running game roared over Liberty, but there was one big problem – actually, there were eight.

The eight turnovers were a killer, but those might have been cleaned up last week. On the other side, Tulane force three takeaways against UMass to start the season but have just one over the last two games.

The USM downfield passing game is strong, the pass rush is fantastic, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Tulane Will Win

The Tulane pass defense has been incredible.

It’s No. 1 in the nation on a defense that’s fifth in the country. Granted, UMass, Alcorn State, and Kansas State won’t scare anyone through the air, but the Green Wave did what they were supposed to do against teams that can’t throw.

And they held up against a Kansas State team that can run.

The offensive line is playing great, the running game has been good enough, and the turnovers haven’t been that big of a problem.

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

Southern Miss has had problems getting the points when it has the chance.

The turnovers can’t be there, and the offensive line has to be ready to deal with a potentially dangerous pass rush.

This won’t be a breeze – Southern Miss is going to win some games this year – but at home, the Green Wave will push past two turnovers and a spotty game from the passing attack to get to 4-0.

Kansas State vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

That’s more like it.

Granted, the Green Wave haven’t played anyone fantastic so far, but there wasn’t the slightest blip against UMass and Alcorn State winning by a combined score of 94-10.

There’s decent balance so far, the run defense isn’t allowing any big gashes, and the pass defense hasn’t given up a thing.

Again, the competition has a lot to do with it, but allowing just 66 passing yards at a 36% completion rate in the first two games is good no matter what.

Kansas State has the third-worst passing offense in the nation so far and averages a miserable eight yards per throw. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Kansas State Will Win

Who needs to throw when you can run like Kansas State does?

Deuce Vaughn is doing Deuce Vaughn things over the first two games – 271 yards and three scores – Adrian Martinez is taking off when he needs to, and the ground game is rolling averaging six yards per carry with four touchdowns in each game.

Ripping up South Dakota was nice, but having few problems against Missouri showed just how solid this offensive front is right out of the gate.

There can’t be any mistakes against this team. Tulane has turned it over three times so far, Kansas State has picked off five passes, and this could get bad fast if the turnovers start coming.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

UMass and Alcorn State. Now it’s time to deal with the upgrade.

Tulane is better, it’s got the talent to give Kansas State a bit of a fight, but the run defense isn’t going to hold up like it needs to, and passing attack will struggle against the Wildcat secondary.

It won’t be a total wipeout, but it’ll turn into a methodically effective win as Kansas State keeps on looking like a sleeper in the upcoming Big 12 chase.

Tulane vs Alcorn State Game Preview

Why Alcorn State Will Win

The Braves know how to control the tempo.

They struggled to convert third down chances in the 31-27 loss to Stephen F. Austin, and they were destroyed in the time of possession battle, but normal the offense is amazing at making teams play at its pace.

There won’t be a slew of mistakes and turnovers, the offense ran wild in the loss – it’ll hit a Tulane defense that gave up 200 rushing yards in the 42-10 win over UMass – with Jargon Howard a dangerous back who can break off yards in chunks.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Tulane Will Win

Yeah, the third down stops.

the Lumberjacks were able to convert third down after third down against Alcorn State, and now it’s up to Tulane to do the same.

The offense wasn’t razor sharp against Umass, but it was balanced, it didn’t take too many chances, and there weren’t issues capping off drives with points. Tyjae Spears ran for three touchdowns, QB Michael Pratt should continue his dual threat ways against the Brave defensive front, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

There won’t be a problem.

Tulane looked great in the opener, it’ll get through this without working too hard, and then it’s on to the date at Kansas State with a chance to make a big statement.

The running game will work better this week – it wasn’t bad against UMass – and the O won’t give away the turnovers Alcorn State will need.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year

QB Clayton Tune, Sr. Houston

Can Tune be for Houston what Desmond Ridder was for Cincinnati last year? The numbers should be strong – SMU QB Tanner Mordecai might have the better passing season, though – but it’s more than that. Tune is the veteran leader on what should be the best team in the American Athletic Conference – and the stats aren’t bad, either.

He hit 68% of his passes for 3,546 yards and 30 touchdowns and ten picks, ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns, and led the way to a terrific 12-win season with a bowl victory. Now Houston is looking for even more.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year

LB Deshawn Pace, Jr. Cincinnati

Call this a projection that Pace takes his game up a few notches and becomes an even bigger terror for offenses.

An underappreciated all-around hybrid linebacker – he only earned Honorable Mention All-AAC honors last year – the 6-2, 215-pounder was all over the field making 95 tackles with 9.5 tackles for loss and four picks, highlighted by a huge one against Indiana. It’s not really his role, but if he becomes more of a pass rusher, he’ll be a gamewrecker.

American Athletic Conference Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

American Athletic Conference predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The American Athletic Conference is about to go through its final season with a whole lot of fun before all the changes come.

If you want wacky, and if you want unpredictable, here you go.

The future Big 12 programs – Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF – should be the stars, but others are going to be just good enough to provide a push or even trip them up. Unfortunately, the Cougars don’t play the Bearcats or Knights.

Get ready for the inconsistencies with teams like East Carolina and Memphis being up and down, depending on the timing of the biggest games, SMU and Tulane will be interesting, and USF and Navy should be just improved enough to pull off a few interesting performances.

Remember, the American Athletic Conference doesn’t have divisions. The top two teams in the final standings will play for the title. It should come down to the last few games with the drama at a high level up until the very end.

Tulane vs UMass Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

Former head coach Don Brown has returned to try to revitalize the program.

It’s an experienced bunch with enough on offense to do a whole lot more – the running game has the potential to be a problem – and there’s enough through the transfer portal to upgrade the passing game a bit.

The defensive side had more problems than the offense, but that’s where Brown comes in. This should be a more aggressive bunch, that comes up with more big plays.

Tulane has to prove it can stop with all of the turnover problems it had last year. UMass has to be at least +3 in turnover margin to stay in this – it’s possible.

However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Tulane Will Win

Tulane should be much, much, much better than the 2-10 version of last year.

The passing game will be stronger, the running backs are deep, the experience is there across the board, and the defense has the pass rushers to be more consistent at getting in the backfield after being ripped to shreds by the better offenses.

And it’s not like the UMass offense will have it all figured out right away.

The Minutemen never got past 28 points in any game last year, and it’s not about to happen right away. The offensive line didn’t get better that quickly, and there won’t be enough explosion to get back in the game in a hurry if …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Tulane will get up fast and stay there.

It was a rough 2021 on offense, a rougher 2021 on defense, and it’s all about to come together right away with a big performance and a great second quarter after UMass makes things interesting in the first.

The Minutemen will come up with two good scoring drives – the things the coaching staff worked on this offseason will click right away – and then things will settle in for the Green Wave.

The offense balance will be fine, but it’ll be the running game that goes on a roll with well over 200 yards.

Tulane Green Wave Preview 2022

Last year was weird.

This was a rock-solid .500 ball club over the previous four years under Willie Fritz with three bowl appearances and some good moments, but the 2021 version fall apart.

Lots of turnovers, too many misfires, bad defense, inefficient offense, poor caddying. Last year was when the program was supposed to be hitting its stride, and instead it totally flopped.

But Fritz is an excellent head coach, there’s too much experience and talent in place to have another off year, and there should be a bounce back into a winning season and bowl appearance as it prepares for a new world next year.

The school is sticking around the American Athletic Conference, and it’s about to be a whole lot easier without Houston, UCF, and Cincinnati around.

Seven years into the Fritz era the program isn’t exactly rebuilding, but this is the season to reestablish itself before looking to be more of a power player in 2023.

Tulane Green Wave Preview 2022: Offense

Turnovers. No, the passing offense wasn’t good enough, but it wasn’t awful. No, the rushing attack didn’t dominate, but it wasn’t bad. The offense averaged 387 yards and 28 points per game, and it needs to be far, far better after only hitting 30 points once in the last ten games.

The turnovers killed any and everything the team tried to do. More on that in a later blurb. On the plusside …

The offense gets nine starters back. The offensive line has four decent starters and enough depth to be okay. It has to be better at keeping defenses out of the backfield, but there’s experience around Sincere Haynesworth at center and Joey Claybrook at left tackle.

The running backs are deep. Tyjae Spears is a quick speedster who averaged 6.7 yards per carry with a team-high 863 yards and nine touchdowns, Cameron Carroll is more of a pounding option, and on the way is Ashaad Clayton from Colorado to potentially take over in the rotation.

Michael Pratt did what he could last year. The sophomore quarterback ran for five touchdowns and threw for close to 2,400 yards with 21 touchdowns and eight picks, but he struggled to keep the chains moving.

The receivers are there to do a lot more. Jha’Quan Jackson is a dangerous deep threat, Deuce Watts is a strong, reliable veteran, and Tyrick James is a solid tight end who led the team with 429 yards and four scores.

Tulane Green Wave Preview 2022: Defense

The defense didn’t do a whole lot to help out the offense. It was a disaster against the decent passing teams, struggled against the run, and allowed 34 points and 428 yards per game.

It got ripped to shreds by Ole Miss, Oklahoma, East Carolina, and SMU, but there were problems against just about everyone. The 5.81 yards per play allowed were the most since 2017, but with seven starters back and a slew of good pass rushers, things should be better. At least that’s the hope.

Darius Hodges led the team with 16.5 tackles for loss to go along with five sacks. The star defensive end flirted with the transfer portal, but he’s back. He’s the best of the bunch up front, but the linebackers are going to be the other main playmakers. Nick Anderson was a good tackler and made a whole lot of plays behind the line, and Dorian Williams is one of the AAC’s best middle linebackers.

The line needs 6-1, 300-pound Adonis Friloux to be more of an anchor on the nose. Losing Jeffery Johnson to Oklahoma stinks, but Patrick Jenkins if coming in from TCU to be a part of the rotation on the end.

The pass defense was a problem. It was helped by a great pass rush, but it still wasn’t enough to come up with enough stops against the great passing teams on the slate.

However, there’s talent in the secondary starting with Macon Clark, the leading tackler with 74 stops and four picks at one safety spot. The corners have to start taking the ball away, but everyone can tackle.
