Toledo (1-0) vs Western Michigan (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Toledo Will Win

The Rockets blew up early against Bowling Green and coasted from there, scoring 21 first quarter points in the 38-3 win.

This is exactly what the veteran Rockets are supposed to do on a regular basis, getting 310 rushing yards with a. good rotation of backs, Eli Peters threw four touchdown passes, and the secondary was a rock, allowing Bowling Green’s Matt McDonald to hit just eight of his 30 passes.

The offense will be terrific, however …

[lawrence-related id=522640]

Why Western Michigan Will Win

There’s no dogging Toledo’s layup win over Bowling Green, but there wasn’t any pass rush  and there weren’t enough plays behind the line overall. Akron couldn’t generate any pressure against Western Michigan, and it got hammered very, very hard.

Toledo isn’t Akron, but Western Michigan was able to tune up with a nearly flawless 58-13 performance. The Bronco run defense might get hit for a big dash or two this week, but overall, the D is just strong enough to a lot of bending, but not a lot of breaking.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not crazy to call this the MAC Championship – at least, the MAC West Championship. These two are very talented, very experienced, and very explosive.

Toledo has won three straight in the series, but the Broncos will just a little bit sharper at home in a fun firefight with a whole lot of big moments for both offenses.

Kent State (1-0) vs Bowling Green (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kent State Will Win

The Kent State team continues to play with confidence.

After the corner turned late last year, all of a sudden, it was as if the light went on. The offense started to click, the FlashFast style made sense, and it all started to roll. Against Eastern Michigan – a 27-23 win – the offense was almost perfectly balanced with 219 passing yards and 212 on the ground, and now it gets to go against a Bowling Green defense that got destroyed by Toledo for over 300 rushing yards and 200 through the air.

Kent State QB Dustin Crum will be sharp, and the running game should average over five yards per carry against a Falcon defensive front that didn’t do anything against the Rockets. So …

[lawrence-related id=522617]

Why Bowling Green Will Win

If Kent State was so great against Eastern Michigan, what went wrong? Why was it such a struggle in a four-point win?

Eastern Michigan isn’t bad, and it was able to come up with big stops on a whole lot of third downs. Kent State was flagged for nine penalties, it turned the ball over, and it did just enough wrong to stall way, way too often.

Bowling Green didn’t do much of anything right against Toledo, but QB Matt McDonald had a nice run – this is being generous with any love for the Falcons – and the line didn’t allow a ton of plays in the backfield.

What’s Going To Happen

Kent State will get out to the same type of hot start it did last week against EMU, but this time around it’ll be able to sustain it.

Bowling Green really does have enough good parts to be far, far stronger after doing nothing offensively against Toledo, but it was able to slow things down just a bit after a rough first quarter.

Kent State hung up 62 on the the Falcons last year. It won’t be that bad, but it’ll be the program’s first 2-0 start since 1988.

Toledo (0-0) vs Bowling Green (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The offense didn’t get going in the first year under head coach Scot Loeffler, but it has a strong line returning, there should be a good rotation of running backs, and Boston College transfer Matt McDonald is a good-sized passer with promise.

The Toledo defense is full of veterans, but can anyone play? It was 123rd in the nation overall, there wasn’t any production from the line in the backfield, and it all trickled down from there. If the Falcon offensive front can just be okay, there should be enough production to overcome …

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Why Toledo Will Win

The Bowling Green defense isn’t going to be anything special.

Most of the top tacklers are done from a mediocre group, there isn’t going to be a whole lot of pressure in the backfield, and Toledo should be able to run as much as it wants to.

The Rockets should be able to take over right away with their running game – Bryant Koback is a great back working behind a veteran line – and there’s enough speed in the receiving corps to keep pushing a Bowling Green secondary that’s experienced, but not anything special.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Toledo’s offense will come out hot. The team closed out last year with three straight losses, and dropped a midseason game to Bowling Green in a bizarre 20-7 clunker.

The Falcon offense will be fine, but it won’t be able to keep up after Toledo scores on its first few drives.

Big Ten Cancels Fall Season. What’s Next For College Football?

The Big Ten has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The Big Ten has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The Big Ten is going to do it. It’s going to cancel its 2020 college football season.

[jwplayer CKtYFVZx]

It was rumored to happen for the last few weeks, and now it’s actually happening the Big Ten is cancelling college football for the 2020 fall.

The details of what’s next are still sketchy, but commissioner Kevin Warren has been hinting at the idea of a spring football season. Forgetting that it would mean two college football seasons in ten months, and that college football in Minneapolis and Madison would be delightful in February, there aren’t any details yet on how that might work.

This all started rolling over the weekend with reports of a meeting among conference presidents about the viability of a college football season, and then Monday morning the Dan Patrick Show went with the story that the Big Ten was going to shut things down.

In the end, it was just too much. The Big Ten types have been hinting from the start that they didn’t believe they could safely make it all work. There were liability concerns, player safety issues, the lack of revenue from no fans in the stands, and then when it finally came time to practice and get it all going, the college presidents couldn’t make it work.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget the player movement side of things. Squashing the demands and the voices of players isn’t a bad thing for those who run the higher-levels of college athletics.

The Big Ten just gave the whole #WeWantToPlay movement one giant, “bless your heart.”

And now, very predictably, college football gets politicized. What could possibly go wrong?

What’s next for college football coming in a moment …

[protected-iframe id=”361699434b6d70baf15f631ed2408ac1-97672683-92922408″ info=”https://www.googletagservices.com/tag/js/gpt.js” ]

MAC Cancels Football Season. What Does It Mean For The Rest Of College Football?

The MAC has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The MAC has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The MAC becomes the first conference to cancel the college football season, at least for the fall.

[jwplayer muPr0F4N]

The MAC announced on Saturday that it’s cancelling/postponing all fall sports due to the COVD-19 concerns. There’s a thought the league will try to play in the spring, but that’s not a huge part of the discussion at the moment.

The MAC had several issues go against them. The main issue was the concern over keeping the players safe, and part of that came with the cost and the resources to adequately test as needed. The other big problem was the Big Ten’s decision to go to a conference-only schedule.

11 MAC games vs. the Big Ten were affected by the scheduling change. In all, the MAC was expected to lose the paychecks from as many as 21 non-conference games. Every conference is different, but the lost revenue side of those games was devastating.

It might be a bit of a cynical overstatement to say that the MAC would still have fall football if the non-conference games weren’t cancelled, but that certainly – at the very least – tipped the scales. Combine the lost revenue with the massive health concerns, and there was a “what are we doing here?” aspect to the MAC”s decision.

There’s the idea that the MAC will play in the spring. In a perfect world, the rest of college football is able to play and figure out how to do this, and the MAC has the spotlight to itself and gets back some of the lost revenue – and does it all safely – through March and April.

And now all eyes turn to the Power Five conferences. Remember, every conference is different, every conference has a different power structure, and every conference has a different revenue stream for football to work off of. However …

Watch out for the Big Ten. Its season has been hanging by a thread for the last several weeks, and while there seemed to be hope after a schedule was announced, the training camps have changed the dynamic. Many teams aren’t practicing full out over concerns for player safety.

Basically, college football doesn’t have a plan. It didn’t create a real plan over the last four months, it didn’t get creative in figuring out whether or not players could play safely, and the sport kicked the can down the road as far as it can go. Now the season is here, and now the sport is realizing how hard it is to ethically and practically play college football. With that said …

No, the college football season isn’t done yet. Even if the Big Ten decides to follow the MAC’s lead, no matter what the optics, the SEC, ACC and Big 12 will still likely do everything humanly possible to play. However, it’ll be a bad, bad look if other conferences try to push things to the spring and everyone else doesn’t follow suit.

So let’s say the other conferences do play. Get ready for the transfer portal to be loaded with top MAC players. Buffalo RBs Jaret Patterson and Kevin Marks, UB DE Malcolm Koonce and LB James Patterson, Toledo RB Bryant Koback, Western Michigan defensive front seven stars Treshaun Hayward and Ali Fayad, and Miami University OT Tommy Doyle are Power Five starters if they choose to leave.

Through all of this, just remember, this will go by in a hurry. There will be college football again, even if it’s not everywhere for right now.

2020 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Jaret Patterson, Jr. Buffalo

It’s not just Patterson.

Give junior Kevin Marks a little credit – a lot of credit, actually – for being more than just a No. 2 guy in the Buffalo offense with close to 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns over the last two seasons. Great in the rotation, he’s able to keep Patterson fresh.

The MAC is loaded with terrific backs this year, but the 5-9, 195-pound Patterson is the star of the bunch coming off a 1,799-yard, 19-touchdown season. He’ll catch a little bit, but one of the toughest pound-for-pound runners in college football – he carried the ball 181 times over the final six games with 15 touchdowns – is there to take over the offense and make it his.

2020 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Treshaun Hayward, Sr. Western Michigan

The guy found his stride after being an okay backup in his first two seasons.

The 6-1, 225-pounder turned into the best player on a solid Western Michigan defense, coming u with 142 tackles with 4.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss as he seemed to get in on every play.

Consistently great, he came up with ten tackles or more in nine games including an 18-stop performance against Eastern Michigan, and he turned into a rock in the open field.

Watch out for teammate Ali Fayad to be in the mix for the MAC Defensive Player of the Year with his pass rushing ability, but Hayward should be in for a special season again.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Toledo Rockets Offense 3 Things To Know

The 2016 Toledo offense ripped off over 6,700 yards. The 2017 attack flirted with 7,000 yards. 2018 was a down year with 5,770 yards and without the same pop, and then came 2019.

5,209 yards.

The Toledo O wasn’t all that bad by most standards – especially with the MAC’s second-best running game – but the passing attack wasn’t consistent or efficient enough, and the scoring wasn’t always there.

Two years ago, Toledo cranked up 525 points, scoring 24 or more in every game but two. Last year’s offense came up with 327 points and failed to get more than 14 in three of the last seven. With eight starters returning, there’s hope to be a whole lot better.

[jwplayer r19lG1ZP]

– Senior Eli Peters will still have to push for the job, but he has the inside track after getting work in half the season with 828 passing yards with six scores and three picks. Sophomore Carter Bradley is a bit of a bigger option, and a slew of underclassmen will get their shot.

The receivers are there to make the passing game a whole lot stronger. Senior Bryce Miller averaged over 19 yards per catch with a team-high 679 yards, and speedy Danzel McKinley-Lewis tied for the team lead with 36 grabs, averaging over 17 yards per catch. 6-4, 240-pound senior Drew Rosi is a nice tight end who can do a lot more than 18 catches.

The running game was strong. Bryant Koback led the way with 1,187 yards with 12 scores – averaging over six yards per carry – and 215-pound senior Shakif Seymour is back as a strong No. 2 back in the rotation.

Four starters are back on the offensive front after a rough year in pass protection, but they’ll once again be great for the ground game. Sophomore guard Nick Rosi is the best of the bunch, but the line should be a strength.
