Titans’ best and worst PFF grades on defense through 6 games

A look the Titans’ best and worst Pro Football Focus grades on defense at the bye week.

With the Tennessee Titans in the midst of their much-needed bye week, it’s time to reflect on how the team has performed through the first six contests of the season.

We already covered the offensive side of the ball in a previous article, so this will focus on the Titans’ defensive players and rank them based on the individual overall grades they were given by Pro Football Focus.

The highest-graded player on defense is surprisingly linebacker Jack Gibbens, who has taken the opportunity he was given and ran with it by earning an impressive grade of 75.8.

On the contrary, Tennessee’s lowest-graded player on defense is outside linebacker Rashad Weaver (44.0), who just narrowly beat out Harold Landry (44.2).

It’s hard to argue against Landry being the one who has been much more of a disappointment given his contract, expectations, and how much he’s played in comparison to Weaver.

As for the rest of the defense, scroll down below to take a look for yourself at the top-10 players based on overall PFF grade (minimum 60 snaps), along with how other notables who didn’t make the group are fairing after six weeks.

Titans’ 53-man roster, practice squad, IR for Week 6

What the Titans have to work with on their 53-man roster going into Week 6.

With less than one day to go before the Tennessee Titans take on the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6 in London, it’s time to take a look at the roster to see what they have to work with for the upcoming contest.

Tennessee made a handful of moves on Saturday, with the team promoting defensive back Shyheim Carter and defensive lineman Taylor Stallworth from the practice squad to the active roster.

To make room, the Titans waived offensive lineman Justin Murray and cornerback Kindle Vildor.

In addition, the Titans elevated two players from the practice squad in defensive back Dane Cruikshank and defensive lineman Jaleel Johnson.

The two moves involving defensive linemen are significant, as they could be a sign that defensive lineman Teair Tart, who is questionable with a toe injury, won’t suit up.

Now, a look at the Titans’ 53-man roster, practice squad, injured reserve and PUP list for Week 6. We’ve also included player designations where applicable, along with any related stories at each position group.

Titans make 6 roster moves ahead of Week 6 game vs. Ravens

The Titans made six roster moves ahead of their Week 6 game against the Ravens.

The Tennessee Titans have made a slew of roster moves ahead of their Week 6 contest against the Baltimore Ravens in London on Sunday.

The team announced it has promoted two to the active roster in defensive back Shyheim Carter and defensive lineman Taylor Stallworth. Stallworth was signed to the practice squad earlier this week while Carter was with Tennessee throughout the offseason before landing on the practice squad.

The move with the latter might indicate fellow defensive lineman Teair Tart, who is questionable with a toe injury, will sit once again. Tennessee’s run defense struggled mightily without Tart in the lineup last week.

Carter was elevated from the practice squad in Week 4 and made his NFL debut in that game, playing 11 snaps on defense and special teams.

In order to fit Carter and Stallworth onto the active roster, the Titans had to part ways with two players. Check out those moves as well as the team’s practice squad elevations for Week 6 by scrolling below.

Titans’ 53-man roster, practice squad, IR for Week 5

A look at what the Titans are working with going into Week 5.

With the Tennessee Titans’ Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts less than 24 hours away, it’s time to take a look at what the Titans are working with in Week 5.

Tennessee has a total of four players ruled out ahead of Sunday in wide receiver Treylon Burks, defensive lineman Teair Tart, linebacker Luke Gifford and right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere.

Petit-Frere is the only one of those four who is healthy, but clearly the Titans felt he needed another week to get acclimated, thus he remains on the exempt list and doesn’t count against the 53-man roster.

The Titans will be getting back wide receiver Kyle Philips this week, as the UCLA product has been activated off injured reserve. Philips’ return is even more welcomed with Burks ruled out.

Now, a look at the Titans’ 53-man roster, practice squad and injured reserve for Week 5, which includes any and all game statuses for players and the practice squad guys who have been elevated.

Titans promote TE Kevin Rader to active roster

The Titans made a pair of moves on Monday, one of which included the promotion of TE Kevin Rader.

The Tennessee Titans made a pair of roster moves on Wednesday, one of which included the promotion of a player from the practice squad to the active roster.

That player is tight end Kevin Rader, who played his first snaps of the season in Week 4 after being elevated. Rader saw nine snaps on offense and 13 on defense.

Rader gives the Titans more help on special teams and an extra blocker at tight end. Tennessee now has four players on the roster at the position in Rader, Chig Okonkwo, Josh Whyle and Trevon Wesco.

In addition to promoting Rader, the Titans also re-signed wide receiver Mason Kinsey to the practice squad, which was reported earlier in the day by Justin Melo of The Draft Network.

Kinsey was waived on Monday, along with offensive lineman Xavier Newman. The Berry college product appeared in two games and served as the team’s punt returner, averaging 12.5 yards per.

Report: Titans re-signing Mason Kinsey to practice squad

The Titans are reportedly re-signing WR Mason Kinsey to the practice squad.

After the Tennessee Titans waived him on Monday, wide receiver Mason Kinsey reportedly won’t be going anywhere.

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, the Titans are re-signing the Berry College product to the practice squad in what is just his latest stint there.

Tennessee promoted Kinsey after Week 2 in the wake of fellow wideout and returner Kearis Jackson landing on injured reserve. The 25-year-old didn’t catch any passes in two games but averaged 12.5 yards per punt return, including a long of 21 in Week 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Kinsey was waived earlier this week in tandem with offensive lineman Xavier Newman as the Titans are set to welcome back both wide receiver Kyle Philips and right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere.

Philips figures to take over the returner role Kinsey was holding down but it remains to be seen if NPF will go back to his old role as the starting right tackle.

Titans’ 53-man roster, practice squad, IR for Week 4

A look at what the Titans are working with on their 53-man roster and practice squad going into Week 4.

With the Tennessee Titans’ Week 4 battle against the Cincinnati Bengals less than 24 hours away, it’s time to take a look at what the team is working with on its 53-man roster and practice squad.

The Titans actually have one open spot on their 53-man roster as of this writing, which will likely be filled prior to gameday (this article will be updated if that or practice squad elevations happen).

One position where the Titans could use a little insurance is at running back, where the team only sports two on the active roster as of right now after Julius Chestnut was placed on injured reserve this week.

Tennessee does have a running back on its practice squad in Jacques Patrick, so he could be elevated or promoted ahead of Sunday’s game.

Here’s a full look at the Titans’ 53-man roster, practice squad, injured reserve and more, and we’ve included links to some related stories and/or Week 4 game statuses for players, where applicable.

Biggest takeaways from Titans’ updated unofficial depth chart

The Titans released their latest unofficial depth chart on Monday. Here are the biggest takeaways from it.

The Tennessee Titans released their latest unofficial depth chart on Monday ahead of their Week 1 game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, September 10.

While the latest version did answer some questions we still had, others went unanswered, like the backup quarterback situation, for example, something head coach Mike Vrabel said is still up in the air.

“I think a lot of it is based on game plan, about who we feel who would step in there and help us,” Vrabel said, per Jim Wyatt. “Will has been out a little bit (injured), but we’re excited to get him back this week and (we’ll) continue with Malik’s maturity and kind of see where it goes at the end of the week.”

Two other spots that remain mysteries are CB2 and kick returner, as those positions were separated by slashes, also. We’ll go into detail about those situations and more below.

But first, here’s a look at the depth chart.

Now, the takeaways:

Projecting Titans’ starting defense heading into Week 1

A look at the Titans’ projected starting defense going into Week 1.

The Tennessee Titans are less than one week away from opening their season against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Sept. 10.

While we haven’t been given official depth charts just yet, most of the starting spots are rather predictable at this point of the year.

It should go without saying that the players who accumulate eight-figure salaries annually are in the starting lineup, such as defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, safety Kevin Byard and outside linebacker Harold Landry.

However, when it comes to the defensive side of the ball, there are a few spots that are somewhat up in the air, so those are the ones that we’ve provided a brief explanation for.

Also, it should be noted that there are 12 players listed below instead of the 11 since Tennessee will obviously run its fair share of nickel packages throughout the year (five defensive backs).

Without further adieu, let’s take a look at the Titans’ projected starting defenses heading into Week 1.

Titans’ projected starting offense going into Week 1

A look at a starting offense projection for the Titans going into their Week 1 matchup against the Saints.

The Tennessee Titans whittled their roster down to 53 players last week and are now focused on their Week 1 matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Sept. 10.

The Titans have made some changes to their roster since cutdown day, but the biggest one on offense came when the team placed wide receiver Kyle Philips on injured reserve.

Philips hurt his knee during preseason Week 2 and the unspecified MCL injury will force him to miss at least the first four games of the season.

As a result, that has caused a change in the team’s projected starting offense, as Philips was expected to be the team’s third receiver, working out of the slot.

So, who will serve as Tennessee’s third receiver now? We’ll take a look at that and the rest of Tennessee’s starting offense going into Week 1.

Just a note: the projection includes a WR3 and TE2 to account for three-receivers sets and 12 personnel.
