Really? Last offseason you actually thought that Baylor was going to be a player in the College Football Playoff chase?

You thought Virginia could end up in the Orange Bowl, and Illinois actually had a shot at going bowling?

Okay … we had those last two in the 2019 version of this, but please cheerfully ignore just how off we were on everything else. (Arkansas … really?)

Of course the Alabamas, Oklahomas, Clemsons and Ohio States of the world are going to do what they do, but other Power Five fan bases want to have some fun, too.

It’s always fun when teams rise up and be a factor? Which Power Five programs could be this year’s Minnesota, Louisville or Tennessee?

ACC: NC State Wolfpack

It was a whole lot of ugly last season.

NC State had turned into a consistent rock under head coach Dave Doeren – going to five straight bowls and winning nine games two years in a row before 2019. But last year was supposed to be a bit of a rebuilding campaign.

That should’ve meant winning six games and fighting to get into a bowl, but instead, all of the wheels came off with a six-game losing streak to finish up the season against a relatively easy schedule.

Let’s try this again.

The schedule is still relatively easy.

There’s a trip to Clemson that’s as tough as it gets, and the regular season is bookended by road games at Louisville and North Carolina, but that’s about it.

Oh sure, Mississippi State is a tough non-conference game, but that’s at home. Outside of the trip to Death Valley, the two other road games in the middle ten are at Troy and Syracuse.

Fine, but is the team any better after having major quarterback issues, massive turnover problems, and with the defense not able to overcome the problems on the other side?

QB Matt McKay is transferring to Montana State, but there’s a great chance that almost all of the offensive two-deep depth chart will be back. The hope will be that last year was a big step back to potentially see a giant leap forward, and for the D to be far stronger with nine of the top 12 tacklers are expected to return.

SEC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which SEC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which SEC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which SEC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit, but football is football, especially in the SEC. Football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best SEC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

SEC Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

These schools suffered the indignity of failing to come up with a winning season in either of the two major sports. The fans didn’t get to have any fun.

14. Vanderbilt

Football: 3-9 overall, 1-7 in conference, 7th in SEC East

Basketball: 11-21 overall, 3-15 in conference, 14th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The football team never got anything going. There was a close win over a sleepy Missouri team, and that was about it with no offense and blowout loss after blowout loss.

Football was bad, but basketball was worse. At least the Commodores didn’t finish dead last in the conference in football. The hoops side finally won two SEC game in the final three, but overall it lost 17 of its last 20 games.

13. Ole Miss

Football: 4-8 overall, 2-6 in conference, 6th in SEC West

Basketball: 15-17 overall, 6-12 in conference, 12th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The basketball team started out well and crashed badly. Just when there was a chance to pivot – at 13-11 on a three-game winning streak – it all went wrong with six losses in the final eight games.

While the bad football season led to landing Lane Kiffin, getting there was rough. Losing five games in the last six was rough enough, but the way it dropped the Egg Bowl at Mississippi State – the peeing dog antics and missed extra point – made it uglier.

Texas A&M (7-4) vs. LSU (11-0) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Texas A&M Will Win

QB Kellen Mond, your table is ready.

As good as LSU might be – whether or not it’s No. 2 in the CFP rankings or in the to spot – it’s having problems defensively.

Who have the top five defenses in college football? Ohio State, Clemson, Utah, Michigan and Georgia. Four of those teams are deep in the College Football Playoff discussion, and the other is a not-that-bad team that’s probably going to finish up in the top 15 overall.

By the way, Minnesota is tenth in the nation in total D. Where is LSU?

43rd.

It’s been able to make up for the issues with its unstoppable offense, but it’s also been playing with fire.

Mond might have thrown six touchdown passes in last year’s epic 74-72 win over the Tigers, but he wasn’t exactly on – it was the only time all season long he failed to connect on half of his throws.

This year he’s been a bit erratic, he hasn’t been huge in the bigger games, and he hasn’t had the season the team needed out of him against one of the nation’s most brutal schedules.

This is the game to make up for it.

The Aggies are going bowling, they have nothing to lose, and they can just let it rip after putting up a nice fight in a 19-13 loss at Georgia. Considering the rain throughout the first half, Mond was solid.

LSU’s secondary has allowed 200 yard or more seven times, gave up over 400 passing yards to Tua Tagovailoa and Sam Ehlinger, and now it’s Mond’s turn to come up with a signature game.

On the other side, the A&M secondary has been brilliant over the second half of the year – it hasn’t allowed a quarterback to hit half of his passes over the last five games.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why LSU Will Win

Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

It’s Joe Burrow’s Heisman to lose, but it’s a 5-9, 209-pound pinball of a running back who’s been the closer.

It took just six carries or Edwards-Helaire to go 188 yards with three touchdowns last week against Arkansas to make it four straight 100-yard games, and now he has to be a difference-maker to at least make the A&M defense worry about the ground game.

The Aggies have been great against the run lately, but they had their problems against the teams that committed to the ground game – Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Auburn. That’s where Edwards-Helaire comes in.

Burrow will be Burrow. He’s been able to produce against the Florida secondary, the Alabama defense, and everyone else thrown at him – he’ll hit his normal share of big plays this week. But when the team has needed to put games away with a few grinding moments to move the chains, it’s been Edwards-Helaire.

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, good … luck.

How are we supposed to enjoy whatever is about to happen in Baton Rouge after the last game these two played?

The 74-72, seven-overtime thing that went on the last time these two played was a hoot, but this time around it’s even more important.

LSU can go from the nation’s absolute No. 1 team to out of the College Football Playoff if it loses this week and then gets dropped by Georgia in the SEC Championship.

On the other side, A&M is already bowl eligible, but after already having to play Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Auburn – and losing all four games – this would be the signature win in the Jimbo Fisher era.

Yes, even more than what happened last year.

But LSU’s defense will answer the call with one of its better performances, considering the circumstances.

Don’t be surprised if being dropped to No. 2 by the College Football Playoff committee lights a wee bit of a fire under a team that doesn’t exactly have a problem with motivation.

Burrow and the Tiger O will be fine, but they’ll have to battle to put the game away late – A&M’s style and pace will be a problem. The slightly-maligned D will rock against the run, and the secondary won’t let Mond do anything too special.

It’ll be fun. Just not seven-overtime fun.

Texas A&M (7-3) vs. Georgia (9-1) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Texas A&M Will Win

Georgia is the exact type of team that should be in Texas A&M’s wheelhouse.

The Aggie passing game has been fine, but it’s a team that likes to own the time of possession battle, keep the tempo down, and battle in low scoring fights. That’s Georgia.

The Bulldogs are fantastic. They have amazing lines, Jake Fromm is Jake Fromm, and the defense is getting the job done, but it’s not going go all LSU and put up 50 points on the board.

It likes to control the clock – that’s not going to be easy against the Aggie bunch that can grind drives out – and it needs to win third down battles on both sides. Texas A&M is terrific on the money downs, is terrific at keeping the big pass plays to a minimum, and it’s been locking down on the struggling passing games.

Over the last four games, the Aggies haven’t allowed a team to complete more than 46% of its passes, haven’t given up a touchdown throw in three of those four, and on the year, are allowing fewer than six yards per pass.

As good as Fromm is, he’s been under 47% over the last two games against Missouri and Auburn and hasn’t thrown for more than 175 yards in three of his last four dates. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Georgia Will Win

Fromm isn’t screwing up.

He threw three interceptions against South Carolina, and that’s been it. He might not be bombing away down the field, but his style is working with the overall scheme of what the team does. It might not be scintillating, but it’s awful effective.

No, he’s not bombing away, but he has thrown seven touchdown passes and no picks in his last three games.

On the other side, the run defense has been a bear.

Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Kentucky. Those are the only three teams to run for 100 yards or more against the nation’s third-best defense. The line isn’t doing a ton to get into the backfield, but eats up everything.

How good has this underappreciated group been? It hasn’t allowed more than five yards per carry in any game, only gave up more than four to Kentucky in a 21-0 win, and over the last three games when it’s been time to step it up, it held Florida, Missouri and Auburn to a combined 155 rushing yards and just over two yards per carry.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

Kellen Mond needs to be fantastic for A&M.

He was great against Auburn – throwing for 335 yards and two scores, but he struggled against Clemson and was just okay when the game was still on against Alabama.

He’ll be good enough to throw a scare into the Dawgs, but the lack of a running game is going to be a killer.

Back to the Georgia run defense, Texas A&M has rushed for 125 yards or fewer four times this season. Once was in the inexplicably close win against Arkansas, and the other three times were against Clemson, Alabama and Auburn – the three losses.

This is the first time the two teams have met since Texas A&M joined the SEC, and just the fifth time overall. Georgia won the 2009 Independence Bowl 44-20 – that was the last time they played. Before that, it was a 42-0 wipeout by the eventual national champion Bulldogs in 1980. Before that? 1954.

This one will be bigger than the other five – A&M leads the head-to-head matchup 3-2, starting with a win in the 1950 Presidential Cup – with Georgia evening the series.

SEC Quick Thoughts, Takes On Every Game: Week 12

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 SEC game.

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 SEC game.

Florida 23, Missouri 6

It wasn’t anything pretty, and the Gators didn’t get the Georgia loss they needed to take the SEC East, but it was still a strong road win by double-digits. Kyle Trask threw for 282 yards and two scores, the offense was able to open it up a bit in the third quarter, and it was the win needed to keep hope alive for a New Year’s Six bowl game.

Missouri can’t score touchdowns. It managed two field goals, making it the second straight game without a touchdown and with just 27 points over the last four games. The passing game didn’t go anywhere, the running game finished with 52 yards, and the O wasted a strong effort from the D.

The Tigers aren’t going bowling no matter what – thanks to NCAA violations – but it would nice to come up with a winning season. They get Tennessee up next before closing out at Arkansas.

Florida gets a week off before facing Florida State. The Sugar Bowl might be out with LSU, Alabama and Georgia all in the mix for the CFP and the top SEC bowl spots, but Orange is a possibility with a convincing win against the Noles and a 10-2 record.

Alabama 38, Mississippi State 7

Of course the season-ending injury to Tua Tagovailoa overshadowed everything else – a whole lot more on that coming over the next few days – but Mac Jones stepped in and was fine. The Tide only scored three points in the second half, but Jones hit 7-of-11 passes for 94 yards, the defense was great, and the shell-shocked team got through the rest of the game and got out. It was still a 31-point win on the road, even after all of that.

Najee Harris has picked a fantastic time to become amazing. He ran for 88 yards and three scores – and caught 51 yards worth of passes with a. score –  the offensive line blasted away, and the receiving corps was its typical fantastic self. Everything was great except for that, and …

Tagovailoa’s injury also pushed out of the spotlight a leg injury to DT Raekwon Davis. The D was just fine against the Bulldogs, but Davis the guy the line couldn’t afford to lose.

Mississippi State was able to run for just enough big dashes to average over five yards per carry. After a good early scoring drive, though, that was it. Tommy Stevens threw for 82 yards and a score, and he tore off a 46-yard run, but the O didn’t do much of anything with its 270 yards.

Alabama got a week against Arkansas to get Mac Jones up to speed in case he was needed against LSU. Now he gets a practice week against Western Carolina to get ready for the trip to Auburn. All is hardly lost in the CFP race – blow out the Tigers, and everything will be still on the table.

At 4-6, Mississippi State has to beat Abilene Christian and Ole Miss to get to six wins and bowl eligibility.

South Carolina (4-6) vs. Texas &M (6-3) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why South Carolina Will Win

It’s desperation time for the Gamecocks.

The team has been able to play just well enough at times to shock Georgia, provide a push to Florida, and roll past Kentucky – let’s just look past the issues against the Tennessees and Appalachian States of the world, for now – with a decent enough defense to keep games close.

The pass rush isn’t consistent, but the line is just good enough to be a problem for the Aggie backfield.

Texas A&M plays a style that helps the Gamecocks. This isn’t some high-flying up-tempo team that can turn the lights out in three drives. A&M is methodical, cares about moving the chains and time of possession, and manages to to do just enough to keep both teams in the game.

A&M won, but it struggled against Arkansas and Ole Miss, with a rushing offense that’s just okay and without a whole lot of downfield pop to the passing game. The O line hasn’t been awful, but it’s beatable in pass protection.

South Carolina should have its opportunities in the second half – A&M won’t run away with this game. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Texas A&M Will Win

South Carolina really doesn’t have a downfall passing game.

Ryan Hilinski has been excellent, and he’s thrown for 300 yards in two of the last three games, but he has only thrown more than one touchdown pass in one of the last seven games, and the team is averaging just 6.1 yards per pass.

There’s no enough explosion, and the running game isn’t doing enough to take over when the big plays aren’t there. The biggest problem with the O is the lack of third down conversions, and it all flows from there.

The offense doesn’t have the big plays, it sets itself up in too many third-and-long plays, and it’s only converting on 34% of its chances. That ties into the time of possession problems for a team that’s keeping the ball for only 28 minutes per game.

The Aggies have started rolling offensively a bit more lately, but this week, all they have to do is what they do – control the clock, play at their tempo, and have the ball for over 35 minutes.

Score a little bit early, and South Carolina won’t be able to keep up as long as the Aggies don’t start tuning the ball over.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

A&M has been ignored because of its 6-3 record, but who are those losses to?

CFP No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Alabama, and No. 13 Auburn. It’s been able to handle the teams that aren’t among the season’s elite.

It’ll be a relatively low-scoring game with both teams keeping things relatively conservative, but Texas A&M does this a whole lot better. The Gamecock offense will barely hit the 300-yard mark.
