Looking at betting data from BetMGM for the most popular bets on the NFL futures markets. Who’s being bet for MVP and Super Bowl LV?

SportsbookWire.com got in touch with BetMGM ahead of the opening kickoff to see where the money is going on the NFL futures markets. Below, we’ll look at the most popular bets to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP and to win Super Bowl LV.

NFL futures betting: MVP favorites and long shots

Bettors are following a recent trend for second-year quarterbacks and backing Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray to win the 2020 NFL MVP Award. The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year has received 9.31% of the total bet count and 6.17% of all money placed on MVP futures bets.

Reigning Super Bowl LIV MVP, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has drawn the largest share of the betting handle at 12.75% of all money wagered on MVP futures. He’s the opening day favorite at +400 heading into the season.

Here are some other popular bets of note and their odds at BetMGM as of Thursday, Sept. 9:

NFL futures betting: Super Bowl LV betting

The Kansas City Chiefs are being heavily bet to be the first back-to-back Super Bowl champs since the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004. The Chiefs are the current Super Bowl LV co-favorites at +600, sharing the honor and price with the Baltimore Ravens.

Kansas City has drawn 8.68% of the total bet count and a whopping 18% of the handle ahead of opening night. The Dallas Cowboys ranked second by percent of handle at 9.31%, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have drawn the second-largest share of the bet count at 7.17%.

Murray’s Cardinals have received 1.69% of the total handle and 2.36% of the bet count.

2021 Super Bowl Odds: Cam Newton signing boosts Patriots

Looking at the updated betting odds to win the 2021 Super Bowl following the New England Patriots’ signing of QB Cam Newton.

Cam Newton finally has a home for the 2020 NFL season. The New England Patriots took a chance on the free agent and former MVP quarterback, by signing him to a zero-risk, one-year contract Sunday, June 28. The Patriots’ signing of Newton helped shift the betting odds to win Super Bowl LV, pulling the Pats even with the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks at +1800 – only five teams have lower odds, including Tom Brady’s new squad, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+1400).

How Cam Newton affects Patriots’ futures odds

The signing of Newton caused changes throughout the Patriots’ 2020 futures odds at BetMGM.

They went from +115 to +110 to win the AFC East, and from +900 to +800 to win the AFC.

Their 2020 win total now sits at 9.5 with +105 for the OVER and -125 for the UNDER. They are -223 to make the playoffs and +180 to miss the postseason.

Additionally, Newton has soared to +2500 to be named the 2020 NFL MVP. He is +4000 to be named Offensive Player of the Year and +450 to be the Comeback Player of the Year – ranking as the second favorite behind Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (+350).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Super Bowl odds sky-rocket after Rob Gronkowski trade

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are cruising up the oddsmakers board with the addition of Rob Gronkowski.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers — or is it now the Tompa Bay Patriots South? — did it again, significantly changing their odds of being in Super Bowl LV Tuesday with the trade for TE Rob Gronkowski.

Gronk, who was out of the NFL last season after retiring from the New England Patriots, said he wanted back and he wanted a trade to the Buccaneers to join his good friend Tom Brady. Fitting for the current Twilight Zone-like state of the world, New England head coach Bill Belichick actually allowed it to happen. Then again, only Belichick could land a fourth-round NFL Draft pick for a retired player.

And just like that, Brady + Gronk = Tampa Bay becomes a top-four team in the eyes of the BetMGM oddsmakers of winning the 2021 Super Bowl LV next January.

BetMGM has shortened the Bucs odds to +900, down from +1600. They were +5500 before the Brady acquisition! That’s some big offseason movement from a team rarely associated with being Super Bowl contenders.

New to sports betting? +900 represents 9/1 fractional odds, implying the Buccaneers have a 10.0% chance of winning Super Bowl LV. A $100 wager at +900 returns a profit of $900 — at the original +5500 odds, a $100 wager would return a profit of $5,500 should the Bucs go on to win this season’s championship.

You just know there are some of those +5500 tickets floating out there with the owners of them doing a little happy dance today.

Gronk has one year remaining on his $10 million contract. In nine seasons with the Pats, he had 521 receptions for 7,861 yards and 79 receiving touchdowns.
