Super Bowl LV: ‘America the Beautiful,’ national anthem performances

The pregame to Super Bowl LV concluded with performances of America the Beautiful and the national anthem

The spectacle that is the Super Bowl starts long before the game. The crescendo builds and is almost at kickoff when “America the Beautiful” and the national anthem are performed.

Super Bowl LV was no different. “America the Beautiful” was performed by H.E.R., who did a fabulous job.

That was followed by the anthem, which was performed by Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church.

And, finally, the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers was on.

Kansas City Chiefs win coin toss, elect to defer

The Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce called heads and that is how the coin came up during the toss for Super Bowl LV. The Chiefs elected to defer.

The coin toss before the Super Bowl has become one of the more wagered upon prop bets.

On Sunday, prior to Super Bowl LV at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fl, the Kansas City Chiefs were represented by tight end Travis Kelce. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers sent out Lavonte David, a linebacker.

The Chiefs, as the visiting team, made the call and Kelce said, “Heads.”

 Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The coin came up heads and the Chiefs decided to defer their choice to the second half, meaning Tampa Bay would receive.

It is the 11th straight Super Bowl the team that won the coin toss opted to defer.

Out of the previous 54 Super Bowls, teams have won the coin flip and the game. In fact, there is a sizable streak currently going on as each team to win the coin toss the past six years has wound up losing. The last team to win the toss and hoist the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the night was the 2013-14 Seattle Seahawks against the Denver Broncos.

CBS scores with marvelous video feature to open Super Bowl LV

CBS set the stage for Super Bowl LV with a stirring video production saluting healthcare workers and families before the Chiefs faced the Buccaneers

The NFL season leading into Super Bowl LV was unlike any other. The COVID-19 pandemic turned the lives of everyone inside out, whether you were a player, owner, or a fan.

CBS built its Super Bowl opening Sunday around the song “Stand By Me.” Jennifer Hudson’s version accompanied a stirring video that paid tribute to frontline and healthcare workers — heroes.

And the network brought it home by tying family life and, the importance of it, to the players on the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tom Brady said his hero was his dad … Patrick Mahomes spoke of how his mom and dad supported him. Many other players offered tributes.

It was a stellar production that pulled together an impossible time in the lives of everyone and hit home. Big time.

Bettor places $1.16M wager on Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl LV

A bettor has placed a seven-figure wager on the Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl LV

One bettor thinks the Kansas City Chiefs are going to win Super Bowl LV but isn’t ready to commit to how by how many points.

So, the safe play — if there is such a thing when betting more than $1 million — is to go with the moneyline.

The wager through William Hill Nevada has been placed to the tune of $1.16M at minus-155.

If Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs repeat by downing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, that will be a nice profit.

If Tom Brady and the Buccaneers dethrone the Chiefs, that will be a seven-figure loss.

Donations pour in to benefit 5-year-old injured in crash involving Chiefs’ coach Britt Reid

A Gofundme to aid the family of the 5-year-old critically injured in the crash involving Chiefs assistant Britt Reid has seen a flood of donations

A Gofundme to aid the family of a 5-year-old injured in a crash Thursday involving Kansas City Chiefs LB coach Britt Reid has gone past the $150,000 mark as of Sunday morning.

The fund was set up Saturday and the donations poured in to help Ariel, who suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident that happened Thursday night with the son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

Per Chiefswire.com:

The family set up the page to help the girl’s mother pay for “the hospital bills and weeks of missed work that will come.”

The GoFundMe states that 5-year-old Ariel, “suffered swelling in and bleeding in and around the brain. She is in critical condition and hasn’t woken since the crash.”

The Kansas City Star and other news outlets have been able to verify the authenticity of the GoFundMe with a spokeswoman for the company:

Bruce Springsteen stars in stirring commercial during Super Bowl LV

Bruce Springsteen makes a stunning statement in a two-plus minute commercial that will air one-time only during the Super Bowl.

Bruce Springsteen has been a part of the Super Bowl. However, his halftime show at XLIII in Tampa on Feb. 1, 2009, doesn’t have the power of the appearance he will make in a commercial during Sunday’s Super Bowl LV.

The 2:10 “advertisement” is more of a mini-film/documentary starring Springsteen, who voices it, too. It will air one time on television during the game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs.

“We just have to remember the very soil we stand on is common ground,” Springsteen says from a chapel in Lebanon, Kansas, with his own 1980 Jeep CJ-5 in the picture. He adds: “Our light has always found its way through the darkness. And there’s hope up on the road ahead.” The ad ends with the tagline, “To The ReUnited States of America.” Springsteen and producer Ron Aniello scored the ad with original music.

The commercial came about after a 10-year pursuit of the rock star by Olivier Francois, chief marketing officer of Stellantis.

The story of how everything came together to put arguably the last person you would see in a Super Bowl commercial on air can be read at Variety.com.
