Stanford vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

Which Stanford team shows up?

Is it the one that balled out late to get by Oregon, or is it the one that couldn’t run the ball a lick against Arizona State?

Is it the one that confidently ripped through USC, or is it the one that sputtered too much against UCLA?

While QB Tanner McKee is the new star of the show, the key is the Cardinal’s ability to run. They’re 3-0 when they’re at least okay, running for 124 yards or more, and they’re 0-3 when running for under 70 yards.

Washington State has allowed over 200 yards in half of its games, but …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars got blasted by Oregon State for 309 rushing yards last week and still run. Why?

The passing game has kicked in over the last few weeks with Jayden de Laura getting comfortable in the gig. He didn’t bomb away against Cal, and he gave up two picks, but he also threw three touchdown passes. Against the Beavers he was fantastic with close to 400 yards with three scores.

Stanford has the biggest issue against the good running teams, and that’s not what Wazzu does. However, as long as the defense keeps taking the ball away – it has a Pac-12 high 13 takeaways – then the team can overcome a few de Laura mistakes and he can still keep bombing away.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State is quickly trending up – it’s like the team needed September to get up to speed – and Stanford is quickly trending weird.

A win is a win is a win, but the Cardinal are a miraculous comeback against Oregon away from losing three straight and losing all the momentum from the USC and Vanderbilt wins.

It might be this simple – can Stanford avoid the turnovers?

Washington State will turn it over, and it’ll take it away. Stanford turned it over twice in the win loss to Kansas State and three times in the loss to Arizona State. That’s it.

The Cardinal offense will be careful with the ball, the running game will work, and the team will bounce back from the ASU debacle to pull off a suddenly nice-looking road win.

Arizona State vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

The Cardinal have the team that can go into Tempe, hang a bunch of points on the board in a fun shootout, and hang on at the end for the win.

Okay, so Oregon gagged away last week’s 31-24 overtime loss, but Cardinal QB Tanner McKee made a whole lot of key plays to help get the team back in the game, and he bounced up off the mat to come through in the extra time.

McKee isn’t making mistakes with 11 touchdown passes and no picks, the offensive front is giving him enough time to work, and the passing game is steadily good enough to keep pressing.

But …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arizona State Will Win

The Sun Devil defense has turned into a force.

QB Jayden Daniels might be the start, and the downfield passing game might be wonderful, but it’s the other side that’s holding firm with the Pac-12’s No. 1 D.

UCLA was able to come up with 200 rushing yards and 235 passing, but the offense couldn’t keep up the pace in the second half after a wild and fun first half.

It’s a good formula. Covert on third downs without a problem on offense with a passing game that completes just about everything, and the defense does its part with a secondary that’s allowing just 146 yards per game.

Stop Stanford from throwing well, you stop Stanford.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford will keep up the pace early on.

There won’t be anything happening on the ground, but McKee will be good enough to keep pressuring an Arizona State team that was fine defensively UCLA and BYU, but has slightly skewed numbers thanks to playing Southern Utah, UNLV, and Colorado.

Daniels and the Sun Devils will break through in the second half with two quick scoring drives out of the locker room, and unlike last week, the late Cardinal chances will stall.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oregon vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Can the offense continue to be consistently balanced?

It picked a great time to come up with its best running day of the season in the win over Ohio State, and there wasn’t a need to take a whole lot of big chances in the wins over Stony Brook and Arizona. It would’ve been nice to have played better against the Wildcats, but the Ducks were lousy and still managed to win 41-19.

Stanford is doing a lot of things right, but the run defense hasn’t been anything special, there aren’t enough defensive plays in the backfield, and Oregon should be able to take advantage of all of it.

The stats are a tad skewed after Arizona melted down late, but the Ducks lead the nation in takeaways with 13 overall and three or more in every game but the win over Ohio State. However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Stanford Will Win

Stanford doesn’t have a turnover problem.

The defense hasn’t been able to generate a ton of takeaways – only three so far – but the offense hasn’t given the ball away in the last three games after turning it over twice against Kansas State.

For all of the good things Oregon does, the defense isn’t great on third downs and the pass defense hasn’t been a rock – even beyond the stat-skewing 484 yards against Ohio State.

Last week against UCLA was a stumble, but Tanner McKee continues to product with a season-high 293 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. He’s been good, he’s not making mistakes, and he’s just the type of quarterback who can pull this off if the defense can be a bit tighter.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Oregon keep its focus and keep on winning?

It was able to get away with a loose performance against Arizona, but that’s not happening against Stanford – the Ducks have to be a whole lot sharper or else Mr. McKee will go off.

The Cardinal run defense won’t be good enough, and with no real pressure to keep Oregon QB Anthony Brown from relaxing and making the easy throws. It won’t be a breeze, but Brown will be effective enough to control the clock and the tempo.

UCLA vs Stanford Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Stanford’s defense isn’t doing enough to get into the backfield.

It didn’t have to do too much to get by Vanderbilt, but overall it’s an issue that the pass rush isn’t there and there’s not enough disruption to matter. It also doesn’t help for a run defense that’s giving up yards in chunks.

The Bruins might be the best in the Pac-12 at generating a pass rush, but Vanderbilt ran for 247 yards last week and averaged 5.6 yards per carry. That came a week after USC averaged 5.6 yards per run, and that came a week after Kansas State rolled for 6.5 yards per carry with three scores.

UCLA RB Zach Charbonnet is averaging 10.5 yards per carry with six scores. He and Brittain Brown will take over for big, big yards.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Stanford Will Win

So what went wrong? How did UCLA go from being America’s darling after beating LSU to being totally unable to lock down late in the loss to Fresno State?

The pass defense is a problem.

It got hit hard by LSU, and two weeks later it was Jake Haener who went off, throwing for 455 yards including the amazing game-winning comeback drive in the final moments.

Stanford’s offense struggled in the opener against Kansas State, and then Tanner McKee took over the full-time quarterbacking gig. Now on the year he has hit 71% of his throws averaging over eight yards per pass with five scores and no picks.

He’s going to bomb away against the Bruins as long as the line can give him the time.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

So what do you like better, the Stanford passing game or the UCLA ground attack?

UCLA’s defense might have a whole slew of flaws, but credit Haener and Fresno State for getting the win last week with brilliant play – the Bruins should be far stronger in this.

The offense still worked last week, and it’ll do just enough on the ground to overcome a massive day from McKee and the Cardinal passing game.

It’ll be fun.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Stanford (1-1) vs Vanderbilt (1-1) Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

Apparently, losing to Stanford is a problem.

The Cardinal not only beat USC, it ended the Clay Helton era with the 42-28 win.

Now that’s what this team was supposed to do, and not clunk like it did in the loss to Kansas State in the opener.

Tanner McKee took over the quarterbacking duties and got the offense going, throwing for over ten yards per pass with an effective 234-yard day. The running game actually worked – fine, so there was just the one big run – and the O line stepped up its game in a big, big way.

Vanderbilt might have beaten Colorado State, but the offense is still a work in progress, there’s no downfield passing game, and scoring is like pulling teeth. Get up fast, and Stanford should have this without too much of a problem.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

How much will the fish-out-of-water thing matter for the team from Palo Alto?

It’s a night game, so the time change aspect doesn’t matter, but it’s an interesting road game on a schedule full of all Power Five teams.

It might not have been a scintillating performance by the Commodores against Colorado State, but … baby steps. It was a much-needed moment of fun after the disastrous loss to East Tennessee State to start the season, with QB Ken Seals playing well, the defense coming up with key stops, and … it was a win.

It might just be the confidence boost to take the pressure off as the Clark Lea era just gets started.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Vanderbilt running game still didn’t work against Colorado State.

Overall, the Rams came up with over 100 more yards than the Commodores, but they didn’t control the clock, got flagged way too many times, and they couldn’t get the big plays to take over the game. Stanford won’t have that problem.

The Cardinal will keep the downfield passing game going, and the defense will take care of the rest against the punchless Vandy O.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

USC (1-0) vs Stanford (0-1) Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

And here we go with the Tanner McKee era.

Jack West was supposed to be the quarterback who took Stanford back to prominence, and he wasn’t totally miserable in the 24-7 loss to Kansas State. However, he threw two picks, McKee hit 15-of-18 passes, and here comes the change.

The Cardinal have enough talent and enough potential to be far better than it showed against the Wildcats, and it starts with a defensive front that generated decent pressure and helped keep the game close until late.

USC needed a great fourth quarter to get by San Jose State 30-7, giving up over 300 yards to QB Nick Starkel and struggling to close with scores until late. McKee has to let it fly.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why USC Will Win

Didn’t you used to be the Stanford running game?

The program that became known for its great line play and elite production from the backs managed just 39 yards. There wasn’t any room to move, the line couldn’t handle the K-State pass rush, and the O didn’t put any points on the board until the fourth.

Yeah, it took a bit for USC to get going, but that seems to be the way the team works over the last few years. It takes a little while, and then everything starts to click.

Kedon Slovis didn’t make any major mistakes against the Spartans, Drake London was unstoppable with 12 catches, and the defensive front didn’t allow much of anything on the ground.

If McKee isn’t great and if Stanford isn’t hitting big plays through the air, forget it.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford will keep relying on its defense to keep the team in games, but once again the inability to power away with the ground attack will be an issue.

Once again, USC will need time to wake up – even in the late start – but Slovis will come up with two good scoring drives, the defense will generate stops, and it’ll be another rough day for the Cardinal.
