UCLA vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

The Cardinal defense is able to keep games close and tight.

It did the job against Oregon State until a fateful late play in a tough loss, but bounced back with great performances in wins over Notre Dame and Arizona State. Neither win was beautiful, but Stanford has started to force takeaways, the passing game has been good, and there’s real hope now for a bowl game.

UCLA is coming off the tough battles against Washington, Utah, and Oregon. There’s no time for a letdown, but this might be a tough game to push through after playing in three straight high-powered emotional battles.

Stanford should control the clock, it will bring the defensive pressure, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why UCLA Will Win

UCLA will keep this simple. It will run, and then run some more.

The Cardinal haven’t been totally awful against everyone’s ground game – Oregon is the only team to go off – but they’ve been steadily mediocre and should get hit for at least 160 yards.

It’s part of how this all works. Stanford allowed fewer than 160 rushing yards three times and went 3-0. It allowed more in the other four games and lost all four.

UCLA has only been under 160 rushing once – the too-close call against South Alabama – and now it’s going to get the good offensive line going and take control of the game from the start.

Even more than Stanford problems against the run are the issues against teams with strong balance. UCLA won’t have a problem throwing, either.

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford will be tough enough throughout to keep this from getting out of hand – Tanner McKee and the passing game will keep pushing – but the defense that’s been so good over the last few weeks will struggle.

It’ll be good on third downs, but UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson will be sharp on two second half drives to finally start to pull away.

UCLA vs Stanford Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

It’s been a rough last few games against Arizona and Arizona State, but that was coming off a dominant 66-43 win over Stanford early last week.

The Bruins didn’t shoot all that well inside, couldn’t hit from outside, and they still won in a walk because the Cardinal couldn’t make a thing.

Everything has to be prefect from the field for Stanford. It’s just 2-6 when it shoots under 42% – it made just 37% from the field in the first game and was a disastrous 4-of-29 from three.

The Cardinal don’t do enough on the free throw line and turn it over way too much to not shoot well, but …

Why Stanford Will Win

If UCLA could lose to Arizona State, could it continue to have problems on the road?

It allowed a normally mediocre ASU offense to play relatively well, the Arizona game was an emotional fight, and now comes a third road game in a row.

On the flip side, Stanford has been home for three games since the loss to UCLA on January 29th.

The Bruin defense hasn’t been as good as it needs to be at dealing with the three. Turnovers haven’t been an issue, but the team isn’t rebounding quite as well as it should.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford should be a bit peppier than UCLA at home, and it should be able to hold its own on the boards. Can it shoot well enough to pull this off?

Not in the second half.

UCLA won’t do anything amazing, but it’ll get past the tough grind of the last two games by busting out of an awful funk from three and doing a better job on the line.

UCLA vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

Okay, Stanford, now do that to the other team in Los Angeles.

The Cardinal pulled off a mini-shocker with a 64-61 win over USC on Thursday night. They shot well enough from the field, were good from three, and they clamped down when they absolutely had to.

They don’t have the offensive burst to keep up in a shootout, but UCLA will be without Johnny Juzang (COVID) and it’s about to play its third game in five games and its fourth in seven.

Stanford has to keep this simple. Control the possessions, continue to be good from the field, and own the rebounding margin. UCLA isn’t all that great on the boards, but …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why UCLA Will Win

Stanford makes a TON of mistakes.

It kept the turnovers to a minimum with just six against USC to go almost with only 13 fouls. It was by far the team’s cleanest all-around game of the year, and it was a total aberration.

Stanford is usually good for at least 15-to-20 turnovers a game, and the normally has a massive fouling problem.

UCLA doesn’t have to overextend itself. It doesn’t normally turn the ball over for easy points, it should have enough scoring pop to be okay, and it shouldn’t have a problem hitting from three on the Cardinal D.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

How tired is UCLA?

This is a different-style of team than USC, and it’s going to give Stanford a whole lot of problems with plenty of forced errors and a whole lot more scoring. As long as the legs and interest are both there, the Bruins won’t have a whole lot of problems.

They’re going to be too good from the outside.

It takes at least 80 points to beat UCLA, and Stanford won’t get there.

UCLA vs Stanford Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Stanford’s defense isn’t doing enough to get into the backfield.

It didn’t have to do too much to get by Vanderbilt, but overall it’s an issue that the pass rush isn’t there and there’s not enough disruption to matter. It also doesn’t help for a run defense that’s giving up yards in chunks.

The Bruins might be the best in the Pac-12 at generating a pass rush, but Vanderbilt ran for 247 yards last week and averaged 5.6 yards per carry. That came a week after USC averaged 5.6 yards per run, and that came a week after Kansas State rolled for 6.5 yards per carry with three scores.

UCLA RB Zach Charbonnet is averaging 10.5 yards per carry with six scores. He and Brittain Brown will take over for big, big yards.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Stanford Will Win

So what went wrong? How did UCLA go from being America’s darling after beating LSU to being totally unable to lock down late in the loss to Fresno State?

The pass defense is a problem.

It got hit hard by LSU, and two weeks later it was Jake Haener who went off, throwing for 455 yards including the amazing game-winning comeback drive in the final moments.

Stanford’s offense struggled in the opener against Kansas State, and then Tanner McKee took over the full-time quarterbacking gig. Now on the year he has hit 71% of his throws averaging over eight yards per pass with five scores and no picks.

He’s going to bomb away against the Bruins as long as the line can give him the time.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

So what do you like better, the Stanford passing game or the UCLA ground attack?

UCLA’s defense might have a whole slew of flaws, but credit Haener and Fresno State for getting the win last week with brilliant play – the Bruins should be far stronger in this.

The offense still worked last week, and it’ll do just enough on the ground to overcome a massive day from McKee and the Cardinal passing game.

It’ll be fun.
