2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

South Carolina Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Gamecocks miss from the SEC slate?

Any time you don’t have to play Alabama or LSU in the SEC your schedule isn’t that bad. The Gamecocks miss two of the West stars, and they don’t have to deal with Arkansas, Auburn, or Ole Miss.

That means they have to deal with Texas A&M and Mississippi State. The latter is manageable at home, but it’s a sandwich date between road trips to Georgia and Tennessee. The former is on the road after going to Missouri.

South Carolina Football Schedule What Really Matters

November is just fine. Get through the first part of the season, and there’s a chance to make a whole lot of noise.

Closing with Clemson is rough no matter what, but at least that’s in Columbia. That closes out a perfectly-timed month without having to leave home.

It’s a beauty of a way to end. There might be five games away from home in the first two months, but Jacksonville State, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky are all winnable home games before finishing with the Tigers.

South Carolina Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Not having to deal with Alabama and LSU is huge.

The Georgia game is on the road, and going to Tennessee is rough. However, Florida is a home game Missouri and Texas A&M are manageable road dates. Combine all of that with the never-leave-home November, and there’s a lot with this slate to like.

Of course it’s not all going to be easy – going to Texas A&M might be nasty this year, and you can all but forget about taking the East with those road games at Georgia and Tennessee – but the Gamecocks should be in for a big year with this schedule.

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl What Happened

In a wildly fun and wacky game, Notre Dame was finally able to push through with an 80-yard drive culminating in a 16-yard Tyler Buchner touchdown pass to Mitchell Evans for a 45-38 lead. South Carolina was able to march a little bit, but stalled after a 4th and 36 heave was knocked away. Before that …

South Carolina held a 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter helped by a fake field goal for a touchdown pass and a pick six of Buchner by DQ Smith. Buchner and the Irish offense were able to fight back – Buchner ran for two scores – but up 38-31 and about to put the game away, O’Donnell Fortune came up with the team’s second pick six 100 yards to tie it up. Buchner made up for it with the final scoring drive.

The South Carolina offense struggled with its consistency – it was missing way too many key players on both sides of the ball – but Spencer Rattler threw two touchdown passes to Xavier Legette, starting out the scoring with a 13-yard strike and with a 42-yarder to take the lead in the third.

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Player of the Game

Tyler Buchner, QB Notre Dame
For good and bad, he was the main man, hitting 18-of-33 passes for 274 yards and three scores with three picks, and he ran 12 times for 61 yards and two scores.

CFN Experts Picks CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Fun Stats

– Spencer Rattler completed 29-of-46 passes for 246 yards and two scores with a pick, and he ran seven times for 27 yards.

– Time of Possession: Notre Dame 36:39 – South Carolina 23:21

– Total Yards: Notre Dame 558 – South Carolina 352

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl What It All Means

Not that there’s any more pressure on Marcus Freeman than there’d be on any Notre Dame head coach, but after the way the team gacked away last year’s bowl loss to Oklahoma State, giving this one away would’ve hurt. But the Irish hung on, figured out how to get through a rocky performance, and closed going 6-1 with only a loss to USC.

This was the first bowl win since the 2019 Camping World, and now the program is 7-6 since 2008. Before that, the Irish lost nine straight bowl games.

Shane Beamer and the South Carolina staff did a great job considering how many key parts were lost. They pulled out all the stops, got a few big plays out of the defense, and if there’s such a thing as an acceptable bowl loss, this was it. The Gamecocks beat Tennessee, beat Clemson, and showed glimpses of how good they can potentially be.

Even with the loss, this was still the best season since 2017. It was the first bowl loss for Beamer – USC won the Duke’s Mayo last year – and the program is now6-3 in the last nine bowls since 2010.

Notre Dame vs South Carolina TaxSlayer Gator Bowl 5 Things To Know

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

– Notre Dame’s season started bad, got weird, and closes strong before the loss to USC. Call it the Marcus Freeman growing pain campaign. The team was able to figure it out rocked eventual ACC champion Clemson, and it got a nice bowl even though it lost to Marshall and Stanford along the way. After all the weird moments, getting to nine wins and closing out with a bowl would be terrific. There’s a problem, though …

The Irish are losing way too many important players. The pass rush took a major hit through the transfer portal and opt-outs, losing TE Michael Mayer to the NFL is big, and the quarterback situation is potentially a mess. On the flip side …

Spencer Rattler is still in place for South Carolina. But who will he throw to? Star WR Josh Vann is questionable, a ton of tight ends are gone, and lowing RB Marshawn Lloyd to the transfer portal is tough. Throw in the losses in the secondary, and both teams will be throwing way too many unknown starters out there.

No matter what, it was an outstanding season for the Gamecocks. The ruined Clemson’s hope for the College Football Playoff. They ruined Tennessee’s hope for the College Football Playoff. They won seven of their last nine, had a tremendous passing game, but again, someone has to catch the ball.

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer won last year’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl over North Carolina. That made it six bowl wins in the last eight tries for the program going back to 2010. This doesn’t matter that much one way or another to take away from the season, but beating the Fighting Irish would still be a big deal.

– Notre Dame started going to bowl games in 1925. It took a while off and went back in 1970, and it’s been a mixed bag ever since – to be nice.

After beating Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl at the end of the 1993 season, the Irish are just 6-15 in bowls including losing the last two, three of the last four, and four of the last six. After the way they collapsed in the Fiesta last year against Oklahoma State, winning this would be a huge deal for Freeman.

The historic game that started in 1946 has been hit-or-miss lately. Rutgers was a late fill-in last year, and it showed in an ugly 38-10 loss to Wake Forest. Texas A&M annihilated NC State in 2018.

Between those two games, the Tennessee 23-22 win over Indiana at the end of the 2019 season and Kentucky’s 23-21 win over NC State at the end of the 2020 campaign were two of the best bowls of the respective seasons.

CFN Experts CFP, NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Notre Dame Will Win The TaxSlayer Gator Bowl

The Notre Dame personnel losses are huge, but South Carolina’s should be a tad more crippling if this turns into a low-scoring defensive battle.

Yes, the quarterback situation is a bit sketchy, and yes, losing Mayer and a few receivers is a problem, but the running game should still work.

Keep this extremely simple. Line up and pound away with an offense that got better and stronger on the ground as the season wore on, and try to control the clock throughout. The Irish weren’t always great at pounding away – Navy and USC were able to hold up just fine – but good things happened when the O line got into a groove.

They were 6-0 when running for over 150 yards and 7-1 when running for over 130. The South Carolina run defense hasn’t been bad and it shouldn’t be that big of a problem, but it got run on by Florida and Arkansas in losses and is 2-3 when allowing over 200 yards.

However …

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why South Carolina Will Win The TaxSlayer Gator Bowl

The Gamecocks will be able to load up against the run.

As is the Notre Dame passing game was hardly cranking up big things, and it can all but forget about anything amazing in this through the air. South Carolina won’t have to do anything funky in the secondary, and its lack of any sort of a pass rush or playmaking ability in the backfield won’t be a problem here.

Offensively, Spencer Rattler has to simply be careful.

Again, a slew of parts might be missing, but there’s a huge advantage at quarterback The Gamecock attack bakes at least two turnovers into the cake every game out, but the Notre Dame defense is hit-or-miss on takeaways. It destroyed Boston College with five of them, but it only forced multiple turnovers three times this season.

Rattler has to be the best offensive player on the field, and he’s got to make everyone around him better.

Why South Carolina Will Win

Can we all get that Spencer Rattler again?

The arm talent is undeniable and the next-level skills are all there, but he was a tad too tentative at Oklahoma and there have been too many misfires and picks and South Carolina so far. And then he got a hold of the Tennessee secondary, and … BOOM.

438 yards, six touchdown passes, no interceptions, 63-38 win.

It’s not like the pressure is off now going against Clemson in the big rivalry game, but that was a sigh of relief performance for the program. It knows it can win, it knows big things should be coming under head coach Shane Beamer, and it knows it has the passing game in this.

Clemson’s pass defense isn’t as rocky as Tennessee’s, but it’s been hit by teams that can throw – there haven’t been too many of them on the slate.

Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman went off for 337, and cranking up 200 yards hasn’t been a problem for just about everyone else who tried. But if that Rattler shows up, he’s the best quarterback the Tiger secondary has faced so far.

But …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Clemson Will Win

Here comes the Clemson pass rush.

The defensive line has hardly been a disappointment this year, but considering the NFL talent and skill up and down the line – even with some injury issues – it hasn’t been quite as dominant as it should’ve been. Now it gets to eat against a Gamecock offensive front that allows way too many plays in the backfield and way too much pressure on Rattler.

Forget where the expectations were set, it’s hard to argue with a defense that leads the ACC in tackles for loss and allows 104 rushing yards per game.

The offensive side should be okay. DJ Uiagalelei doesn’t have to force anything, the running game can take over – South Carolina was hammered against the run over the last three games allowing close to six yards per pop – and the defense will take care of the rest.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Which South Carolina shows up?

It’s not like it’s not fully focused and isn’t going to bust it, but this team has a way of occasionally falling very, very flat.

The turnovers that weren’t there against Tennessee will show up this week. The Tigers will come up with two takeaways – to offset their own offense’s two mistakes – the home crowd atmosphere and energy will be a big boost, and they’ll make it seven in a row in the series.

Why Tennessee Will Win

The Vols are putting games away fast.

Missouri has a solid defense – it gave up 28 points in the first half.

Kentucky was supposed to have the right style to be a problem – it was down 27-6 at halftime.

Tennessee was up 21-7 on Alabama in the first quarter, and 23-7 on LSU in the first half.

South Carolina has a big-time passer in Spencer Rattler, but he doesn’t exactly make the offense click on a consistent basis. Nothing seemed to work last week in the 38-7 loss to Florida.

The wins come when the O runs well and keeps the games under control. That’s a problem against the Vols.

The Gamecocks are 0-3 when allowing more than 27 points, and only Georgia allowed Tennessee to score fewer than 34.

Bowl Projections

Why South Carolina Will Win

The running game has to work. That’s where the defense has to come into play by not giving up the big plays early on to keep this within range.

South Carolina has to control the clock, convert on third downs, and dominate the game with the ground attack as much as it can.

Tennessee’s run defense has been great, but that’s mostly because everyone tries throwing to keep up the pace. Alabama was relatively effective and Georgia was okay against a D that allowed more than 110 rushing yards five times.

South Carolina is 5-0 when it runs for over 110 yards.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Every time you think Tennessee is about to stall and have problems it hangs a gajillion points on the board and wins easily.

Nothing stops.

South Carolina might be playing its final home game of the year, and Senior Day always matters, but the Vols need style points now. They have to look the part to the College Football Playoff committee will eye-test up on the 11-1 record.

South Carolina doesn’t have the pass rush to bother Hendon Hooker and slow down the machine.

Florida vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Florida Will Win

The Gators are taking the ball away.

The defense has been a disaster at times. It’s one of the worst in the nation third down stops, allows too many first downs, and it’s getting hammered through the air allowing 220 yards or more in each of the last six games.

It’s a problem, but it’s forcing takeaways with two or more in six of the last seven games. South Carolina might have limited the turnovers to one in the win over Vanderbilt, but it gave the way multiple times in every other game.

There’s not going to be any defensive pressure on red hot Gator QB Anthony Richardson, the secondary is getting hit hard, and …

Why South Carolina Will Win

Again, the Florida defense is struggling.

On a roll, the Gamecocks have quietly been fantastic over the last six weeks going 5-1 over the last six with a fun finishing kick facing Tennessee and Clemson to close. Already bowl eligible, now the team gets to have some fun.

This is where Spencer Rattler has to rise and shine by pressing the deep shots over and over to stress test a secondary that’s allowing close to 13 yards per completion. He’ll get picked once or twice, but he has to keep pressing.

As much attention as Spencer Rattler and the passing game receive, and as bad as the Florida secondary has been, this is about the rushing attack.

South Carolina is 5-0 when it runs for over 100 yards, 1-3 when it doesn’t, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Florida has allowed 134 or more rushing yards in every game but the loss to Kentucky.

The South Carolina defense will do a whole lot of bending without breaking, the pass defense will allow plenty of yards, and Richardson will have a nice day, but the offense will get grinding.

Rattler won’t bomb away, but he’ll connect on a few good deep passes and the running game will take over just enough to keep the momentum rolling.
