Week 4 2023 Mountain West Football: Best Bets

Getting closer to conference play. We’re 25-12 on our bets for the season so far. Here’s what to look for in MW play this week.

Week 4 2023 Mountain West Football: Best Bets

A look at the Mountain West betting odds for Week 4

Contact/Follow @J0shFr3d & @MWCwire

What are the oddsmakers saying about these match ups?

Late in the week we will look at odds and recent lines and make our best picks and bets. Odds courtesy of Vegas Insider.

We went 6-5 in week two and are 25-12 on the year. Continuing to come back down to Earth. Lets see if we can’t pick it back up.

Boise State @ San Diego State (+6.5, O/U 45.5)

Boise State is average. San Diego State is meh. Maybe once they both get to conference play, they’ll pick it up. I have more faith in Boise than I do the Aztecs even though this is in San Diego. The Aztecs haven’t inspired much confidence in them so far this season. Take the Broncos to cover.

Pick: Boise State -6.5

Air Force @ San Jose State (+5.5, O/U 46.5)

San Jose State lost on a pick six. Air Force looks to be a team even with replacing their skill positions. The Falcons are in the driver’s seat for a MW Championship berth at this moment. The Spartans seem like a team to play spoiler. Air Force covers on the road.

Pick: Air Force -5.5

New Mexico @ Massachusetts (-3.5, O/U 50.5)

If UMass wins, they get to claim New Mexico as a part of Massachusetts. They already beat New Mexico State earlier this season and now they get to play the Lobos who are coming off a loss to the Aggies in the Rio Grande Rivalry. Let down game is here, Minutemen cover.

Pick: UMass -3.5

Colorado State @ Middle Tennessee (-2.5, O/U 51.5)

Speaking of let down games, the Rams head to Tennessee after giving Deion Sanders and Co all they could handle. The Blue Raiders are coming off a victory and have a shot to put an arrow in CSU’s heart. CSU seems to have turn a corner and they look to be able to keep it up. Take the Rams outright.

Pick: Colorado State ML

Appalachian State @ Wyoming (-2.5, O/U 42.5)

If this was in North Carolina, I’d be taking App State. But since this is at altitude, I don’t want to touch the spread. The total seems low here. App State has had some high scoring games this season. And curiously, so have the Cowboys. The Texas game being the only one to be under the total here.

Pick: Over

Non-conference play is basically coming to an end for the Mountain West, and soon we can tell who is better with actual head-to-head matchups.

Before that happens there are eight non-conference matchups this week and they could impact the rankings despite none being against Power 5 opponents as there were seven last week.

It is still early and we are figuring out who is good and not so good. Right now it looks like Air Force and Fresno State are leading the way, as they are the top two teams this week.

Before we get to the rankings, here are a few ways our staff voted.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01g1kx1m9c8rz2mjgq player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Mountain West has been really good at getting more bowl bids than their allotment provides. This year probably will end up that same way with about seven, or even eight teams to make a bowl game.

Colorado State’s close loss to Colorado does not automatically put them in bowl contention. The Rams still need to win games. That goes the same for San Jose State and San Diego State. The latter two are in by a thread this week.

Utah State is going to barely make it in this week even though they loss to Air Force. The Aggies may have some hope as their second half showed a lot when McCae Hillstead took over at quarterback and showed well against the Falcons.

The James Madison will be a test for Utah State. Win and they are firmly in prime bowl position. Lose and there are issues.

The Mountain West had an interesting week with some big wins and very close losses.

There was a shutout of a Power 5 wins and two close defeats with Colorado State nearly upsetting Colorado, and the same for Kansas vs. Nevada which saw the Wolf Pack losing by just a touchdown.

Air Force: Falcons are legit conference contenders

Boise State: First win of the year

Colorado State: Inserts many loud screaming noises

Fresno State: Bounce back win over Arizona State

Hawaii: Oregon is just damn good

Nevada: Two chances couldn’t do it

New Mexico: Offense started to show life

San Diego State: The chainsaw was the winner

San Jose State: Can’t have a pick six

UNLV: A comeback that seemed unlikely

Utah State: McCae Hillstead is the guy

Wyoming: Gotta play all four quarters

Aztecs Chainsawed By Oregon State Beavers 26-9

The Aztecs aren’t looking like Power Five contenders after getting badly  hammered by Pac-12 opponents two weeks in a row.

Contact/Follow @tedmcgovern & @MWCwire

San Diego State’s back-to-back heavy losses have many fans asking whether Brady Hoke is serious about winning.

Corvallis, OR-  Opposing teams always take the San Diego State Aztecs very seriously when they step onto the gridiron. This because the Aztecs have waged formidable wins over the past decade- especially against many Pac-12 opponents.

Sadly, however, San Diego State did not appear to have the ability to defeat the Beavers on Saturday, or any other competent team for that matter. The Aztecs appear to be seriously out of sorts, for a second season in a row, and coaching needs to show the Aztec Nation that they can right the ship.

After a very impressive overall record against the Pac-12 for much of the past decade, now under coach Brady Hoke, the Aztecs have now gone 0-4 over the past two seasons against the doomed Power Five conference. To the Aztec Nation this is simply unacceptable.

On Saturday, the Aztecs’ offense showed little ability to complete plays or to protect quarterback Jalen Mayden. Two fourth-quarter interceptions by the SDSU defense were not enough to turn the corner in a 26-9 loss to No. 16 Oregon State at Reser Stadium.

SDSU crossed midfield four of its five first-half possessions, but had only Jack Browning’s 52-yard field goal to show for it as the Beavers built a 12-3 halftime lead.

The Aztecs finally found the end zone on a 6-yard run by Jaylon Armstead with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Oregon State responded in turn with a 75-yard touchdown pass on the very next play.

Oregon State came into the game as a 24 1/2-point favorite. SDSU was more competitive than that, although the Aztecs trailed by at least two scores for most of the game, and coach Hoke at times appeared moderately engaged.

Oregon State defenders repeatedly swarmed Mayden in the backfield. The Beavers had four sacks in the first half and six for the game. Many sacks came on big third-down plays with Mayden looking for anybody to open up and receive the ball.

Mayden (20-for-32, 256 yards, INT) would have led the Aztecs in rushing had the sacks not been taken off his total.  This is also abnormal for San Diego State, often referred to as Running Back University.

In fact, SDSU has failed to establish its running game, rushing 34 times for 24 net yards. The Aztecs finished the game with 326 yards in total offense, which is very concerning.  The Aztecs have an army of talented running backs, so it calls into question what exactly is going on with Aztecs offense.

On the other hand, Oregon State’s offense produced 475 yards of offense, much of it supplied by quarterback DJ Uiagalelei (14-for-30, 284 yards, TD/ 2 INTs). The week prior, UCLA produced 550 yards of offense at Snapdragon Stadium.

After the back-to-back losses to Pac-12 teams, SDSU (2-2) turns its attention to the Mountain West conference play.

The Aztecs host the Boise State Broncos on Friday night at Snapdragon Stadium. The Broncos (1-2) earned their first win of the season with a 42-18 victory Saturday over North Dakota.

Without question, the Aztecs will have to carefully analyze the status quo, and make some major adjustments to prevent additional embarrassing losses and to resume capitalizing on its core competencies.

If the Aztecs continue to struggle, it is possible that SDSU Athletic Director J.D. Wicker will have to assess whether the current coaching squad is performing at the level San Diego State expects.  The stakes are high: SDSU just built a $300M stadium and the Aztecs were a heartbeat away from ascending to Power Five play.

The university is too deeply invested to settle for descending status and fan disappointment while asking fans to invest even more.

Week 3 2023 Mountain West Football: Best Bets

We got some conference action plus more chances for a ranked upset. Here’s how the MW shakes out in Week 3.

Week 3 2023 Mountain West Football: Best Bets

A look at the Mountain West betting odds for Week 3

Contact/Follow @J0shFr3d & @MWCwire

What are the oddsmakers saying about these match ups?

Late in the week we will look at odds and recent lines and make our best picks and bets. Odds courtesy of Vegas Insider.

We went 7-4 in week two and are 19-7 on the year. Slowly coming back down to earth. Let’s see if we can’t reverse the trend this week.

Utah State @ Air Force (-9.5, O/U 46.5)

The over in an academy game? Yes. This matchup has gone over the 46 points mark in every matchup bar one. And that one was a 42 point total. Air Force gets their first true defensive test of the year. Utah State meanwhile gets a chance to show everyone they are for real.

Pick: Over

North Dakota @ Boise State (No Line)

It’s the start of the Boise State revenge tour. The Broncos have looked oddly pedestrian the first two weeks of the year. North Dakota is running into a potential buzzsaw. Or we could see North Dakota give Boise State a scare. Doubtful, but anything is possible.

Pick: Boise State

San Diego state @ #16 Oregon sTate (-24.5, O/U 48.5)

There looked to be good things coming for the Aztecs this year. They thought they had found their QB in Jalen Mayden, but the San Diego State offense hasn’t looked as good as advertised. The defense hasn’t been great either, though it has kept them in games. The Beavers are looking to add another check mark to their resume.

Pick: Over

Vanderbilt @ UNLV (+4.5, O/U 59.5)

This is the trap game of the week for the Mountain West. We don’t actually know what the Rebels are going to bring to the table this season. And Vanderbilt’s performance against Hawai’i doesn’t inspire confidence in them to cover either. Under all the way.

Pick: Under

San Jose State @ Toldeo (-7.5, O/U 57.5)

I don’t know man. This just feel disrespectful to the Spartans. Yeah, Toldeo barely lost to Illinois, but Illinois laid an egg against Kansas. San Jose State has had to run through two Pac-12 schools that are on one so far this year. This should be a better indicator of where they stand and the cover seems real.

Pick: San Jose State +7.5

Wyoming @ #4 Texas (-29.5, O/U 49.5)

Whelp, good luck Wyoming. This is probably somewhat of a let down game for Texas after their win over Alabama last week. But it still won’t be close. The over feels safer because we could see Texas just relax and run their offense and keep everything in front of them on defense.

Pick: Over
