Who is in the running for Player of the Year?

Take A Look At the Best Performances Around the Mountain West In Week Ten

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

Flynn pulls ahead, while Air Force and San Jose State find representation on the list, in a week full of upsets.

The staff at the Mountain West Wire wanted to do something a little different this year. We are going to keep track of the top performers from teams around the Mountain West throughout the year and vote on who had the best performances that week.

How it works description now at the bottom of the article

The order for the tenth week is as follows:

1. Seneca Knight, sophomore guard San Jose State (5 Points)

28 Points, 9 Rebounds and 3 Steals against Nevada

21 Points, 8 Rebounds and 2 Assists against Colorado State

Knight makes his debut on the list and does so with a bang with a first place finish after a week that featured handing the Nevada Wolfpack their first loss in conference play while averaging 24.5 PPG and 8.5 RPG for the Spartans. San Jose State has had a well known tough transition into the Mountain West, failing to finish above .500 in conference play, posting a 16-98 record since their move in 2014.

Knight has played well for a Spartan’s team that is enjoying 9th place in the conference standings after two wins against top half teams New Mexico and Nevada this season. Those two conference wins give head coach Jean Prioleau more wins in conference play than his previous two years in San Jose combined (which add up to two).

Knight is leading the team in scoring with 13.7 PPG but is averaging 16.6 PPG in conference play. The Spartans are a bit two sided and can bring an upset caliber team to the court (i.e. Hofstra, New Mexico, Nevada) or a team riding an eight game losing streak (Nov. 23rd-Dec. 22nd) any night.

To be fair the Spartans only have one loss to a team outside KenPom’s top-250, and have a strength of schedule rated 67th in the country. Either way this Spartan team may be a bit underrated (I know how it sounds but ask the Lobos or Wolfpack) and would have a “successful” or progressive season if they finish anywhere inside the top-10. And Knight’s play as of recent can get them there.

2. JaQuan Lyle, senior guard New Mexico (4 Points):

14 Points, 10 Assists and 3 Steals against Fresno State

20 Points, 4 Assists and 2 Rebounds against Air Force

3. Malachi Flynn, junior guard San Diego State (3 Points):

19 Points, 4 Assists and 3 Steals against Wyoming

19 Points, 6 Assists and 3 Rebounds against Boise State

4.  Jalen Harris, junior guard Nevada (2 Points):

20 Points, 5 Rebounds and 5 Assists against San Jose State

31 Points, 3 Assists, and 3 Rebounds against Utah State

5. Ryan Swan, senior center Air Force (1 Point):

31 Points, 11 Rebounds and 3 Assists against Utah State

10 Points, 7 Rebounds and 2 Assists against New Mexico

Past Weeks:

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3Week 4 | Week 5 | Week 6 | Week 7 | Week 8 | Week 9

Current Overall Point Totals:

Malachi Flynn, junior guard San Diego State (17 Points)

JaQuan Lyle, senior guard UNM (15 Points)

Derrick Alston Jr, junior guard BSU (14 Points)

Jalen Harris, junior guard Nevada (11 Points)

Sam Merrill, senior guard USU (11 Points)

Jazz Johnson, senior guard Nevada (9 Points)

Nico Carvacho, senior center CSU (7 Points)

Hunter Maldonado, sophomore guard Wyoming (7 Points)

Alphonso Anderson, junior guard USU (5 Points)

Carlton Bragg Jr., senior forward New Mexico (5 Points)

Lindsey Drew, senior guard Nevada (5 Points)

Justinian Jessup, senior guard Boise State (5 Points)

Seneca Knight, sophomore guard San Jose State (5 Points)

Justin Bean, sophomore forward USU (4 Points)

Amauri Hardy, junior guard UNLV (4 Points)

Orlando Robinson, freshman forward Fresno State (4 Points)

David Roddy, freshman guard Colorado State (4 Points)

Isaiah Stevens, freshman guard Colorado State (4 Points)

Roderick “RJ” Williamssenior forward Boise State (3 Points)

Bryce Hamilton, sophomore guard UNLV (2 Points)

Corey Manigault, senior forward New Mexico (2 Points)

Jordan Schakel, junior guard SDSU (2 Points)

Donnie Tillman, junior forward UNLV (2 Points)

Abu Kigab, junior forward Boise State (1 Point)

Ryan Swan, senior center Air Force (1 Point)

How It Works:

Each person will award 15 points in total to five players and should award it as so:

1st place (Player of the week): 5 pts

2nd place: 4 pts

3rd place: 3 pts

4th place: 2 pts

5th place: 1 pt

The player with the most points total will be our player of the week and we will keep track of the point totals every week so that the player who has the most at the end of the year will receive the Mountain West Wire Player of the Year award. Just copy the players below and type your names above it like we do for the pick them docs we get and award your points.

Now some guys made the list and others didn’t. A big thing to think about was consistency throughout the week. Something that hurt some guys was having a decent game one day and a bad one the other day. Guys who made the list had a great game one day and a good one on other days, or good games both days.

This column will come out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings depending on how late some games finish on Sundays.

The 17-0 Aztecs visit Fresno State, intent on staying perfect.

The red hot Aztecs have issued Fresno State one loss so far this season.  Will road play turn the tables? Doubtful…

Fresno State hosts the No. 7 San Diego State Aztecs at 11p.m. EST at Save Mart Center.  To be clear, that isn’t a grocery store, nor a food court.  It’s the Bulldogs’ home basketball court.

While most of this season’s games featuring the Aztecs have been on Stadium and ESPN 3 as well as ESPN 8 -“The Ocho,” this game is on actual television.

GAME DETAILS

WHO: #7 SDSU (17-0, 6-0 MWC) at Fresno State (5-11, 1-4 MWC)

WHEN: Tuesday, January 14, 2020 — 11:00 P.M. EST / 8:00 P.M. PST

WHERE: Save Mart Center, Fresno, CA

WATCH: ESPN 2

LISTEN: 1360-AM, 101.5-FM  |  940 ESPN Fresno

ALL-TIME RECORD: This is the 120th meeting, the most of any opponent in SDSU history. The Aztecs lead 63-56..

ODDS: San Diego State -7.5

OVER/UNDER: 127

San Diego State is 17-0 overall and 5-0 on the road. San Diego State has won every game this season by an average 18.9 points. Fresno State has given up four of its past five games, so they’ll be looking to turn that around.

The Aztecs are a venerable Swiss army knife of talent.  Malachi Flynn, Yanni Wetzell, Matt Mitchell, Jordan Schakel, or KJ Feagin can each take over during a game.

On the other hand, the Bulldogs lost to the Lobos 78-64 last Tuesday.  Jordan Campbell struggled for Fresno State ending with only eight points on 2-for-14 shooting and turned the ball over four times. Orlando Robinson and Jarred Hyder each scored 14 points.

Miracles can happen, but it’s highly probable that the Bulldogs are going to go down in this game by more than fifteen points.

GAME PREDICTION

Aztecs 79, Fresno State 62

2020 Way-Too-Early Mountain West Football Power Rankings

There are five teams that earned a first-place vote in our early 2020 Mountain West football power rankings.

Many first-place votes.

With college football officially in the books with the national title game it is always a fun exercise to take a stab at who will be the best teams next year. Our staff has put together their thoughts for an early 2020 Mountain West football power rankings.

Now, these were completed during the time between Rocky Long stepping down at San Diego State and Nick Rolovich leaving Hawaii for Washington State. So, these votes will not reflect that which is something to consider when looking over these.

These rankings are probably going to be way off as in last year’s 2019 first power rankings we had Fresno State and Boise State tied for first place, and the Bulldogs did not even make a bowl game. Plus, Air Force was eighth and the Falcons finished the season 12-2 and ranked in the final AP poll.

Here are some of the votes from our staff.

Matt also has a thread with a blurb on each team you can read here.

There is a lot to consider for voting teams where. Like new coaches which the West Division now has four new coaches, returning talent, players leaving to the NFL, transfers in and out, close games last year, reputation, returning talent, and sometimes just a gut feeling.

Three teams that have the most disparity in vote placement are San Jose State. Hawaii and Fresno State. Those three teams had votes that were spread about over eight places. There also are five teams with a first-place votes in Boise State, Air Force, Wyoming, Hawaii, and San Diego State.

Feel free to give us your thoughts on this over at our Facebook or Twitter accounts with your poll.

No doubt the conference balled out this fall.

College football’s national championship game will close the book on the 2019 season tomorrow. Before that happens, we wanted to look back at some of Mountain West football’s best individual plays, a lot of which reflected the unexpected twists and turns that the campaign took throughout the fall. From epic game-winning kicks to contested catches in traffic, the conference gave us everything you could ask for and then some.

Here are the ten best plays from 2019.

10. Wyoming’s Sean Chambers stiff-arms a defender into oblivion vs. Missouri

Welcome to 7220, you can see yourself to the door when you’ve had enough.

9. San Diego State’s Jesse Matthews snags the ball out of the air with three defenders around him vs. Utah State

Credit Ryan Agnew first for extending the play, but the Aztecs’ freshman receiver definitely upped the difficulty level on this one while making it look easy.

8. Fresno State’s Mykal Walker blows up a 4th down play vs. USC

The Bulldogs came up tantalizingly short against the Trojans, but it wasn’t from a lack of effort. This defensive play from Walker, who had moved from the defensive line to middle linebacker, gave them a chance to steal the win.

7. Nevada’s Brandon Talton leaves no doubt while crushing a game-winning field goal vs. Purdue

The Wolf Pack had one of the wildest overall seasons in the Mountain West and that started all the way back in Week 1, when a walk-on kicker from Vacaville, California made sure everyone in college football knew his name with his first memorable kick of the season.

6. Utah State’s David Woodward makes his own break vs. Colorado State

In case you’re wondering why the Mountain West made Woodward a first-team all-conference selection despite missing six games, this is Exhibit A.

“They just blitzkrieged us.” – Boise State coach Leon Rice

San Diego, CA-  San Diego State (17-0, 6-0 MW) easily defeated the Boise State Broncos (11-7, 3-3 MW) in front of a sold-out Viejas Arena crowd of 12,414 on Saturday night.

The Aztecs had this match locked up by halftime.

Boise State, like Utah State, Fresno State and others entered Viejas on a mission to hand the Aztecs their first loss of the season.  But, within the first five minutes of the game Leon Rice realized this Aztecs squad was playing on a whole different level as they went on a 23-9 opening run.

“They just blitzkrieged us,” said Rice.

“We tried to help on the post a little bit and Whack! Whack! Whack! Three (3-pointers). It all starts with Malachi though. He just gets going down hill, and he’s so shifty and smart with the ball. He’s a handful, and he’s the straw that stirs that drink.”

Worse yet: it wasn’t even Malachi Flynn, Yanni Wetzell or even Matt Mitchell who dominated.

It was KJ Feagin who made 16 of his season-high 23 points in the first half. Feagin was ON FIRE.

Rice then realized the Aztecs have more depth than a Chinese buffet.

Nonetheless, Wetzell did add 20, while Flynn deposited 19 and Mitchell put away 10 for the Aztecs.

Flynn dished out four of his six assists in the first half, making mincemeat of the Boise State defense with an agility that caught Leon Rice’s attention.

“One of those passes I was like, ‘Wow!’ The one where he wrapped it around our whole defense,” Rice said. “We were kind of in the right spot and it was like, ‘Wadda ya do?’ I mean, he threw it on the other side of our defenders and it was perfect. There’s not a lot of point guards that can do that.”

RJ Williams contributed 16 points for Boise State, despite the heavy SDSU defensive aggression

It was an onslaught nonetheless.  Feagin made three 3-pointers and Flynn had two in the first 7 minutes.  In fact, the Aztecs as a team made six of their first nine 3-point attempts.
Boise State did not once lead this game.  The Broncos came back within eight points on a Williams dunk during the first half, but the Aztecs replied with a crushing 18-2 run.

Feagin made consecutive shots to pull ahead 33-19; Jordan Schakel nailed a 3 and Wetzell had a layup. Flynn and Wetzell made sequential shots to push a 45-21 lead. Flynn then did a shake-and-bake, stepping back and pulling the trigger to sink a long- range 3.

Anybody not guarding Flynn out to 30 feet isn’t doing their job…

Feagin’s 16 first-half points helped SDSU take a 48-25 halftime lead.

In the second half, Boise State outscored San Diego State 40-35 with the help of a 5-for-11 effort from 3-point land. Redshirt freshman (and coach’s son) Max Rice and true freshman RayJ Dennis collectively sank four 3-pointers to finish with eight and 10 points, respectively.

Dennis made his second career start in place of senior Marcus Dickinson, who was sidelined with a strained quad.

Williams came a board short of his 7th career double-double.  He led the team with his 16 points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes.

The non-recoverable lead was established in the first half, and despite a strong Broncos effort this was a near 20-point Aztecs victory.

Nobably, SDSU defense curtailed Boise State’s top two scorers — Derrick Alston Jr. (20.3 ppg) and Justinian Jessup (15.5 ppg) to a combined 16 points on 6-for-21 shooting.

RJ Williams said after the game, “It’s very frustrating, because we worked very hard the last three days on how to guard and what we’re supposed to do.  We just didn’t execute it and when we don’t do that, things like this happen.”

Leon Rice had a clearer conclusion.  “Give credit to San Diego State, they’re undefeated for a reason.”

SDSU plays at Fresno State on Tuesday, January 14th at 8 p.m. PST.

Boise State plays at Air Force on Wednesday, January 15th at 7 p.m. MST.

San Diego State is sparking something in the city of San Diego.

Over the last 4 seasons, the Aztecs and the Broncos have split their matchups. At home, the Aztecs have only lost one game to the over the 19 game history.

The Aztecs are on a roll. The focus, the stats, and numbers are for real. The Aztecs and the fan base are believing once again, that they’re watching something special unfold in Viejas arena and their streams.

With all the coaching changes and assistant talk at San Diego State,
one person who doesn’t get enough credit for this upswing is former Boise State assistant Chris Acker.

Acker assumed the defensive void Rod Palmer and Justin Hutson before him. On paper, yes he is an assistant coach, but he carries the weight of coaching up the defense of the Aztecs.

Acker was key in developing guard Justinian Jessup who the Aztecs will see on Saturday. In 2018-2019 Jessup lead Boise St in scoring and rebounds. On Wednesday night against UNLV, he became Boise State’s all-time leading 3-point shooter. The 4-year senior is 16 3-pointers away from claiming the Mountain West All-time 3-point record currently held by BYU alum Jimmer Fredette.

Acker has done an amazing job of coaching up his transfers and getting the team ready for this season. He now has had the extra time to prepare his current team against his former team.

For San Diego State to win this game is to make sure Nolan Narain is game-time ready if the Mensahs aren’t available. And we’ll see from there. Narain is making an impact, despite disappearing for a few years.

WHO: San Diego State (16-0, 5-0 MWC) vs Boise State (11-6, 3-2 MWC)

There is no unanimous top team.

2019 season is in the books

The Mountain West football season is over and with the season completed we have one final power rankings. These power rankings are much different compared to the final regular-season poll.

Boise State was a unanimous pick but after its bowl loss that is no longer the case after they lost to Washington in the Las Vegas Bowl. Also, the Mountain West had one of its best seasons over with four teams win double-digit games.

Those teams are the Broncos, San Diego State, Hawaii, and Air Force; those teams are also the ones that all took home a first-place vote. Despite the first-place votes getting spread around, the top four teams remain exactly the same.

In fact, the entire poll order remained the same which is not all that surprising but the Boise State loss had some people lose confidence after its loss but going undefeated in league play and finishing 12-2 was still considered the best team in the Mountain West.

Malachi Flynn Leads Aztecs Over Wyoming

I do not know if it was the altitude or the lack of big men, or just playing down to competition, but early in the game the Aztecs came out sloppy and allowed the Wyoming Cowboys to keep it close against San Diego State. After shaking off the early daze, the Aztecs pushed the pedal and jumped out to a lead that they would not relinquish to win 72-52.

Early on the Aztecs wre not hitting from three, but found themselves scoring from within the arc. They moved the ball and got everyone involved, taking an 11 point lead into the half with five players scoring at least five points. The Cowboys tried to stay in the game from beyond the three-point line, and did so somewhat.

After scoring the first basket in the second half Wyoming hoped to mount a run, however, it was not to be as the Aztecs pushed the lead up to 20 at the halfway point of the second half. Every time the Cowboys looked like they might mount a run, the Aztecs answered and run up the score more to deflate the young Cowboys. In the end San Diego State outscored

Wyoming in each half and ended with a dominating 72-52 victory.

The San Diego State defense was relentless on this day, deflecting passes and racking up eight steals against the listless Cowboys. Even though Wyoming grabbed eight offensive rebounds in the game, they could not do much with them as the Aztecs stifled the Cowboy offensive attack. Wyoming shot 33.3% for the day, compared to the Aztecs who shot 52.1%, and were doomed to finish with a loss.

Malachi Flynn led the Aztecs with a game-high 19 points and four assists. Yanni Wetzell was perfect from the field (7-7 from the field; 3-3 from the free throw line) and finished with 17 points. Jordan Schakel was the last double-digit scorer on the Aztecs and finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Wyoming was led by Hunter Maldonado who had 18 points and seven rebounds. Hunter Thompson scored 15 points in the contest and had five rebounds.

San Diego State hosts Boise State on Saturday. Wyoming stays in Laramie and will take on UNLV.
