No. 19 Aztecs Return To The Top 25 With A Vengeance

After besting #13 Gonzaga at the Kennel on December 29th, fans were surprised to see the Aztecs outside of the Top 25 last week.

Brian Dutcher’s Aztecs fire on all cylinders entering Mountain West conference play.

After a 5-week break, the San Diego State Aztecs (13-2, 2-0 MW) are back in the Associated Press Top 25, advancing seven spots from #26 last week to #19 in both the Associated Press and the Coaches Poll.

Gonzaga’s home court, the McCarthey Athletic Center a.k.a. “The Kennel” is a very hard place to win. How difficult? When the Aztecs defeated the Bulldogs, a.k.a. Zags, it was their first home loss to a non-conference opponent since 2015. As well, coach Mark Few and the Zags have been in the AP Top 25 since the end of the 2015-16 season. The Aztecs managed to close with a ten-point victory, leaving Zags fans stunned.

After New Year’s Day, the Aztecs opened up conference play on Wednesday, January 3rd, against another Bulldogs squad. This time it was the Bulldogs of Fresno State. Aside from an early lead in the opening minute of the game, SDSU thumped coach Justin Hutson’s crew 74-47.

Then, on Saturday, January 6th, the Aztecs led wire to wire against a dazzling, dangerous UNLV Runnin’ Rebels team with a 72-61 win.

The Aztecs have simply become impossible to ignore.

In light of this season’s Mountain West Conference play being as formidable as it has ever been, also including #17 Colorado State and #20 Utah State, and five spots removed Nevada Wolfpack, the Aztecs will be tested intensely. They will also have potential ranked team wins in conference, for once.

The Aztecs are back in the Top 25, and this time they might stick around.

SDSU plays at San Jose State on Tuesday, January 9th (8 p.m. PST CBS Sports Network) and at New Mexico on Saturday, January 13th at 11 a.m. PST on CBS.

The Fresno State Bulldogs start conference play tonight against the defending Mountain West Championship and currently the 11-win San Diego State Aztecs.

The Bulldogs are coming off their first win over a team with a winning record, beating the San Diego Toreros 71-67. The Dogs got the win without their Senior Point Guard Isaiah Hill who leads the team in points at 13.3 ppg and assist at just 6.0 apg. Filling in for Hill was the Utah Tech Transfer Isaiah Pope who led the way with 13 points. The Arizona State Transfer Enoch Boakye had a very solid game with eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The Bulldogs never trailed in this game, which is a testament to their dominance on the court.

Now the Bulldogs will shift their focus to conference play and look to take down San Diego State something they haven’t done since 2019. Losing eight straight to the Aztecs. As for San Diego State, they are off to another strong start and are coming off their best win of the season so far beating No.13 the Gonzaga Bulldogs on the road. The Aztecs are coming into tonight’s game on a four-game win streak.

Keys to an upset:

It is no easy task when your first conference game is against a team that is coming off a final-four appearance and then coming off its best win of the season against No.13 Gonzaga. San Diego State has won eight straight against the Bulldogs and has won 12 straight home games. So how can the Bulldogs change that?

[lawrence-auto-related count=2 category=1361]

Xaiver Dusell:

If the Bulldogs are going to have any chance tonight they have to make threes. You have to space the floor and make the Aztecs guard the perimeter. In the two losses that San Diego State has this year both opponents made eight threes or more. Xaiver Dusell, the Bulldog’s best three-point shooter will have to have a big shooting night. Fresno State is 6-2 when DuSell scores in double digits. Dusell did have a game this season when he made six threes which resulted in being the highest-scoring game so far this season for the Bulldogs

Can the Bulldogs crack 70 points:

Fresno State is 6-1 this season when they score 70 or more points. Their one loss came in OT when the Bulldogs lost at the Buzzer to Portland State. Also, the Bulldog’s last win against the Aztecs scored 70 points since then the Dogs have only scored more than 60 points once which they also needed overtime for. So how can the Dogs score 70 points?

It starts with the two-star players being aggressive with Hill and Eduardo Andre. If these two can work, the pick-and-roll game and create offense out of double teams help open up the floor that will allow guys like Dusell, Pope, and Yap Jr to get going. If the Bulldogs are going to have any chance tonight at least four to five players have to be in double figures.

The Bulldogs need some consistency on offense. I do believe bench play will play a big factor in that. Pope and Boakye have been really coming into a groove lately. The question will be can other Bulldogs like Jalen Weaver, Donavan Yap and Isaac Taveras consistently bring that extra scoring off the bench.

Predictions:

Isaiah Hill is expected to be back tonight for the Bulldogs. History shows that this isn’t a game the Bulldogs can win, but history also shows that these Dogs can make it a game against the Aztecs. I anticipate this game to be physical and slow, with the Bulldogs putting up a good fight, but ultimately, the Aztecs pulling away late in the second half.

Bulldogs 55-68 Aztecs.

Mountain West Football’s Updated 2024 Matchups Released

What’s new?

The vagaries of college football realignment didn’t directly impact the Mountain West Conference over the last calendar year, but the shockwaves of moves across the country resulted today in a revised slate of matchups that includes the Oregon State Beavers and Washington State Cougars, the two Pac-12 programs left behind by their conference mates’ exodus.

When it was announced that the conference would do away with the Mountain and West divisions in 2022, the conference announced a rotation that would protect two games for each team and extend through the 2025 season. A multitude of Power 5 programs had other plans, however, and when the Big 12, Big Ten, and ACC raided the Pac-12 for ten of its teams throughout 2023, it left Oregon State and Washington State standing alone.

Here are the home and away games that the Mountain West had previously unveiled for 2024:

Air Force, Nevada, and San Diego State will host the Beavers while Boise State, Fresno State, and New Mexico will do the same for the Cougars. Conversely, Colorado State, San Jose State, and UNLV will travel to Corvallis; Hawaii, Utah State, and Wyoming will head to Pullman. None of the games will count as part of the conference standings, however, meaning that each Mountain West team will have seven conference games rather than the usual eight.

The changes, as you might expect, have differing impacts on every Mountain West team’s pre-existing schedule. Air Force, for instance, will get to face Oregon State at home instead of Hawaii, but Colorado State now travels to Oregon State and Nevada rather than Boise and San Diego. As DNVR Sports’s Justin Michael noted, it will be the first time since 2010 that the Rams and Broncos do not face each other. Similarly, Wyoming will now host San Diego State and Utah State rather than Nevada and UNLV.

One interesting twist is that the two teams who played in the Mountain West championship game this month, Boise State and UNLV, are now set to square off at Allegiant Stadium rather than Albertsons Stadium next year. Exact dates for the Mountain West schedule will be released at a later time, but next year’s title game is slated for Saturday, December 7, 2024.

No. 13 Colorado State Achieves Highest Top-25 Ranking Ever

Colorado State is unbeaten and ready to take on anyone.

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

The Rams and Aztecs make this week’s AP Top-25 after strong finishes to the month of November.

The fourth week of college basketball is here and with it, a newly released Associated Press Top-25 poll. And while fans around the Mountain West have had their share of Top-25 appearances over years. Monday’s edition was special for many reasons in Fort Collins particularly.

Colorado State make the Top-25 for the second straight week, rising from 20th to a program best 13th. The Rams also made the Coaches poll at No. 12 and a very impressive first NET ranking of 7th in the nation on Monday.

San Diego State rejoined the Top-25 after making the preseason rankings at No. 17 to start the season.

How they got here

No. 13 Colorado State was picked to finish 5th in the Mountain West preseason poll. Now, this feels rather low one month into the college hoops season. Though folks in the industry needed to see how head coach Niko Medved would put a decent sized freshman class, three transfers & arguably the best point guard the Rams have ever had together.

In short, they fit together rather well. Well enough to begin the season undefeated at 8-0, with four high major wins and a win over in-state rival Colorado (their first since 2017).

The No. 25 Aztecs make their return to the AP Top-25 since opening the season at No. 17. Brian Dutcher’s squad had a bit of a setback in week one of the season when they fell to Brigham Young in Provo.

That loss saw them knocked out of the Top-25 entirely, but still receiving votes each week. Since, they’ve won six straight games (four on the road), including wins over Pac-12 foes California & Washington.

Some Perspective

For the Colorado State program this is huge. Niko Medved’s best years in Fort Collins have come with floor general Isaiah Stevens healthy and locked in. Last season was a bit of a setback within the program, but injuries can do that. Though it appears last season is far in the rear view of the Rams at the moment.

It seemed as though the last time the Rams were consecutively ranked in the Top-25 may have been the peak of Medved’s squad building potential in Fort Collins. That was the 2021-2022 season, when Colorado State graced the Top-25 for a grand total of six weeks, made the NCAA Tournament as a No. 6 seed and had a first round NBA Draft pick in David Roddy.

Boy was I wrong, and in the world of the transfer portal, Medved has shown the ability to utilize every avenue available to build a quality roster in 2023. The Rams’ success has also given fans a great story to endorse when other programs have fallen short of expectations.

San Diego State is still nationally recognized as a dangerous team and still have challenging games ahead. Two road games against Grand Canyon & No. 7 Gonzaga and playing host to Stanford in between are all great opportunities to boost their resume.

With the Aztecs regaining their place, it gives the Mountain West two teams in the AP Top-25 simultaneously for the first time since the 2021-2022 season. Arguably more impressive is that it’s the first time two Mountain West schools have been in the AP Top-25 together in non-conference play since 2012-2013.

The non-conference momentum is trending completely upwards for the Mountain West. Which has solidified itself as the best mid-major conference in the country, at least according to KenPom ($). Schools across the conference need to attack December with the same energy they did in November to begin the 5+ bid-league conversations.

Our staff has made its selections for the best of Mountain West football as we close out the 2023 season.

Only the best of the best make the cut.

Mountain West Wire’s 2023 postseason honors:

All-Conference Teams | Offensive Player of the Year | Defensive Player of the Year | Special Teams Player of the YearFreshman of the Year | Newcomer of the Year | Coach of the Year | Coordinator of the Year

With the Mountain West’s regular season in the books and the conference championship game just one day away, our staff here at Mountain West Wire has once again put its collective heads together to create our fifth annual postseason all-Mountain West football team.

If you’re interested in seeing how these selections stack up against our preseason picks, click here. Alternatively, you can click the following links to find our postseason honorees from 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2018.

As always, our all-conference roster goes four deep and attempts to best reflect the variety of offenses and defenses we see week in and week out throughout the conference:

  • We vote for a Defensive Flex player to better reflect that some units — like Boise State, San Diego State, and Wyoming — often operate with five defensive backs or a nickelback/linebacker hybrid in their 3-3-5 or 4-2-5.
  • We split our linebacker selections into two, inside and outside, as we’d previously differentiated between centers, guards, and tackles on the offensive lines and between interior linemen and edge rushers on defense.
  • We vote for three wide receivers instead of two.

If you disagree with our choices, feel free to let us know what you’d have done differently on Twitter or Facebook.

San Diego State seems to have found its next head coach to replace Brady Hoke who announced he would be retiring.

The choice is Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel first had the news lf Lewis being the top target. Then the San Diego-Union Tribune has confirmed that Lewis could be introduced as the 20th Aztecs coach on Wednesday morning.

Prior to running the offense at Colorado, Lewis was running a high-octane offense at Kent State in the MAC. He took a gamble to join Deion Sanders staff to up his profile.

While with the Golden Flash, Lewis’ offense was up pace and moved the ball at a fast past. During his time in the MAC, his Kent State offenses did take two years to get going. His first two years they were sixth in total offense but then they were first in two of the next three years.

At Colorado, it was up and down for Lewis. He started off hot by putting an offense out on the field that was lighting up opponents and even had Heisman buzz surrounding quarterback Shedeur Sanders. In five of the first seven games there was 36 or more points scored and four above 40.

Then Lewis’ offense started to take a hit and he was demoted from play calling duties. The writing was there for Lewis to find a new job. The drop in production and subsequent demotion did not hurt the former Kent State head coaches chances at another top job.

Going to San Diego State he can become a legend. This Aztecs team has been stagnant on offense for years as a complete offense. There have been elite running back like Donnel Pumphrey and Rashaad Penny, but ever since the first half of the 2020 season, the running game has been bad.

The Aztecs now have a chance to reinvent itself with an elite offensive mind that could attract the elite local talent that is nearby. Good quarterbacks and wide receivers don’t want to play for a defensive-minded game plan even if there are wins attached to it.

The weather is superb in San Diego and that can help a lot in recruiting, then mix in an offense that will just sling it, hurry up and go huddle? There will be plenty of great players who will want to play their Saturday’s at Snapdragon Stadium.

It was clear that athletics director J.D. Wicker was leaning toward an offensive coach. Reportedly others who were linked or interviewed were Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grub and UNLV offensive coordinator Brennan Marion. Plus, former Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo would have brought a different style of offense to the city.

If Lewis can get this offense going with the advantages that San Diego has to offer, and can have the defense even close to what it is known for. Then just maybe, this San Diego State can live up to its potential.

Only the best of the best.

The Mountain West football season is nearly complete, but before Saturday’s championship tilt between Boise State and UNLV and bowl games after that, the conference media announced its selections for the all-Mountain West two-deep and individual awards.

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty earned the nod as the Mountain West’s offensive player of the year, becoming the first sophomore to do so since Nevada’s Carson Strong in 2020. Though he was limited to just ten games because of injury, the Broncos’ super sophomore led the conference with 110.9 rushing yards per game and 164.6 all-purpose yards per game and finished second with 18 total touchdowns. According to Pro Football Focus, Jeanty’s 92.4 overall grade also led the Mountain West and ranked third among all FBS running backs.

Colorado State’s Mohamed Kamara was tabbed as the Mountain West’s defensive player of the year, the first Ram to be decorated as such since Shaquil Barrett in 2013. His 13 sacks and 17 tackles for loss both paced the conference, as did the 35 quarterback hurries for which he was credited by PFF, while his 83.2 overall grade is third-best among all Mountain West defenders.

Meanwhile, UNLV kicker Jose Pizano stepped up to win the conference’s special teams player of the year award. After transferring in from Missouri State, Pizano led the Mountain West in connecting on 23-of-25 field goals, including a perfect 16-of-16 inside of 40 yards, and finished second overall with 119 total points. That made him just the second Rebel to crack the century mark dating back to 2009.

UNLV quarterback Jayden Maiava was named the conference’s freshman of the year, becoming the fourth Rebel in the last seven seasons to earn the honor. He stepped into a difficult situation when incumbent starter Doug Brumfield was sidelined by injury in September, but the Vegas native stepped up and finished the regular season with a 64.1% completion rate, 2,626 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and a 2.1% interception rate. More than any of the other individual awards, this one may have been a foregone conclusion after Maiava had already earned freshman of the week five times throughout 2023, a conference first.

Lastly, UNLV’s Barry Odom became the first Rebels head coach since John Robinson in 2000 to be named the Mountain West’s coach of the year. After taking over from Marcus Arroyo, Odom shepherded the Rebels to a 9-3 record, the team’s highest single-season win total since 1984, engineering an offense that led the conference with 35.5 points per game and a defense that tied for first with 22 total giveaways and led the way in allowing a 34.6% third-down conversion rate.

As for the all-conference teams, every program has at least one player on this year’s postseason honor roll. UNLV leads the way with six first-team selections, while three players — Wyoming’s Easton Gibbs and Colorado State’s Jack Howell and Tory Horton — each earned their second postseason first-team appearance.

Jeremy and Josh are back to take a look back at the final regular season games of the Mountain West season. The championship game is decided by computers but it didn’t really have to if one or two things went a different way this year.

Colorado State is not bowl eligible after its loss to Hawaii, there is a firing in New Mexico, and Fresno State keeps free falling.

Reese Waters was named event MVP, scoring a career-high 24 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 on free throws.

The San Diego State Aztecs (5-1) took the game into overtime for a second straight game, this time for a 76-67 win against the California Golden Bears (2-5) at the SoCal Showcase.

Jaedon LeDee had 19 points and Darrion Trammell scored nine on the night, but someone else led the Aztecs in scoring against Cal.

Reese Waters was named MVP of the event, after scoring a career-high 24 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 on free throws. Impressively, Waters hasn’t missed a free throw yet this season.

Waters was 4-for-4 from the line in overtime and SDSU collectively made 9 of 10 free-throw attempts in overtime to clinch the 76-67 victory.

The Aztecs were fresh off of winning the title belt at the 2023 Continental Main Event tournament, while Cal lost both of its games at the SoCal Classic tournament.

Jaedon Ledee made two free throws with 6:15 left to take a 63-54 lead, however SDSU did not score again in regulation. On Cal, Rodney Brown Jr. hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Fardaws Aimaq put down 3 of 4 from the line to tie the game with 1:42 left and forced overtime.

Waters made 6 of 11 shots from the field, including 2 of 3 from long range, along with his 10-for-10 from the line to lead the Aztecs with 24 points. Ledee’s 19 points included 7 of 10 from the line. The Aztecs collectively made 31 of 37 from the line.

Cal’s Jaylon Tyson made 9 of 21 from the field, including 2 of 10 from the arc to lead the Golden Bears with 23 points before fouling out. Fardaws Aimaq had a double-double, with a commanding 14 points and 18 boards.
