With this being the first power rankings of the year and only three teams playing on Week 0, these will be pretty similar to our preseason staff rankings.

12. Nevada

The Wolf Pack will get a rude awakening as they take on USC in Los Angeles.

11. New Mexico

Lobos have a very tough game at Texas A&M but they gotta cash that check.

10. UNLV

Give me the Go-Go offense. This is what excites me this week. IF that offense stands out then the Rebels should move up this list quickly.

9. Hawaii

Loved what the passing offense and the rushing defense, yet it was against Vanderbilt. They host the Stanford Cardinal which is winnable.

Stream a ton of football with a free trial of FuboTV

8. Colorado State

All eyes will be on the offensive line and if QB Clay Millen can take the next step.

7. Utah State

Facing Iowa will be difficult for this Aggies team. It will not be as bad as the Alabama game last year but it will be interesting to see what the Aggies offense will do against an elite defense.

6. Wyoming

Running back depth is a question but the defense will be tested as they host Texas Tech.

5. San Jose State

The Spartans are 0-1 but had a good showing against USC with its offense making lots of plays.

4. San Diego State (2 first-place votes)

To be honest, this seemed like the same old San Diego State in its win over Ohio. Running game showed signs of life, defense more than held its own, and the offense settled for field goals

3. Air Force

Can’t want to see what John Lee Eldridge III will be as the main back in Colorado Springs.

2. Fresno State (2 first-place votes)

Mikey Keene was officially named the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs. The defense should be elite.

1. Boise State (8 first-place votes)

Opening the season at Washington will set the tone for the Broncos.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01g1kx1m9c8rz2mjgq player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Mountain West Week 1 is in full swing with all 12 teams in action and we have the early lines for this games and our off the cuff picks. These are not my official predictions but me thinking what will happen before a ton of research goes into these games.

I will also include FPI as well for more context than just the line.

FRIDAY

Stanford at Hawaii (+3.5)

Hawaii showed a good amount against Vanderbilt and while home underdogs, can easily upset Stanford in its opener. Taking the Warriors to cover and win this one.

SATURDAY

Robert Morris at Air Force (NL)

An FCS game, easy win for the Falcons and expect a big game for John Lee Eldridge III.

Boise State at Washington (-14.5)

This seems like an easy cover and for the initial pick, I will fall for it and take the Broncos to cover. This will clearly by a huge test for Taylen Green.

Mountain West Football: The Top 50 Players Of 2023

Washington State at Colorado State (-12)

This feels like an upset to me. RB Avery Morrow available is huge and the Rams will have the best player on the field in WR Tory Horton. Colorado State outright at home in a huge home win at Canvas Stadium.

Fresno State at Purdue (-3.5)

Yes, Fresno State has a new quarterback and lost a lot of offensive playmakers. Take the Bulldogs to upset the Boilermakers with new head coach Jeff Brohm, and led by the defense.

Nevada at USC (-38)

Sigh… take the Trojans to cover.

New Mexico at Texas A&M (-38)

See pick above.

Stream a ton of football with a free trial of FuboTV

Idaho State at San Diego State (NL)

San Diego State please give us some fun offense.

Bryant at UNLV (NL)

The premiere of the Go-Go offense. LETS GOOOOOOO!!

Utah State at Iowa (-25)

The Brian Ferentz drive for 25 KPI to keep his job starts this week against Utah State. The Aggies lost a lot to the portal but QB Cooper Legas can keep them around. Give me Utah State to cover.

Texas Tech at Wyoming (+14)

If Wyoming had its full stable or running backs they miiiiiight get the upset win. Texas Tech should cover and be a bit too much for a likely lethargic Cowboys offense.

SUNDAY

Oregon State at San Jose State (+16.5)

These are two of my dark horse teams I love this year and hate that they play each other. This 16.5 points seems like a lot for Oregon State. The Spartans will cover and maybe just pull the upset and ruin my stupid +4000 bet for the Beavers to win the national title.

Week 0 is in the books

Jeremy is back solo once again to recap the three Mountain West games in Week 0. The result was 1-2 for these games but there is plenty of optimistic for the teams that loss with San Jose State who was doubled up against USC but still scored 28 points. Hawaii came from behind to hang and nearly beat Vanderbilt on the road.

San Diego State won but it seems like the same old Aztecs which isn’t a bad thing. They do need a better running game and that would go a long way in helping the offense. It is early but winning over Ohio to start 1-0 is good way to start.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01g1kx1m9c8rz2mjgq player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

There are three teams in action this week but that does not mean we are not going to hand out some winner and loser this week.

No need for a fancy introduction or anything so let’s dive into Week 0 action.

Winners:

San Diego State got a nice win over Ohio under new offensive coordinator Ryan Lindley calling the show. One stand out player was tight end Mark Redman who became the first Aztecs tight end to have two touchdowns since 2018.

For the game, he had 5 catches for 62 yards to lead San Diego State’s receiving group that is needing to find a few more playmakers after losing their top two wide outs from last year.

Nick Nash, SJSU, WR

The converted wide receiver from quarterback had a huge game against USC. Buuuut…. it is a not an elite Trojans defense. However, Nash had a huge game with three touchdowns on six catches for 89 yards.

He averaged 14.8 yards per catch which is quite good and he could be a sleeper big time player coming into league play, and when they take on Oregon State later in this year.

Take a look at this touchdown that Nash had against USC. If Nash is going to be this important to the San Jose State offense, then opposing teams need to take notice.

New SJSU RB Quali Conley

The San Jose State ground game has been inconsistent the past few seasons with Kairee Robinson. Now, the Spartans may have that one-two punch with the addition of Utah Tech transfer Quali Conley who rushed for 108 yards on just six carries with a long of 57. He also had a pair of receptions as well.

Hawaii’s front-seven

The Warriors had a tough loss to Vanderbilt but the defensive front seven can’t be blamed. Hawaii held the Commodores to just 1.9 yards per rush and only two carries were over 10 yards.

This unit had nine tackles for loss with Isaiah Tufaga and Andrew Choi getting into the backfield with three and two TFLs, respectively. This duo also combined for three sacks on the day.

Losers:

Poor INTs:

This might be picking on Hawaii QB Brayden Schrager who had 351 passing yards and three touchdowns. However, a big time interception might have cost them the game, looking back in hindsight.

Hawaii was at the 6-yard line with 6:12 left in the first quarter, and he threw a poorly under thrown fade that was picked off in the end zone Plus, another one late in the game that sealed the victory for Vanderbilt.

Maybe this is nitpicking but the interceptions were a big difference in game that the Warriors lost by a touchdown.

Vanderbilt’s stadium, angles, and views:

This was a wild situation in Nashville on Saturday night. We get it, the team is upgrading its stadium but this is crazy.

The camera angles on TV were bad and the most odd ones was kicking extra points or field goals with basically an up high view. Plus, it was sorta funny to see the ball be kicked off the makeshift scoreboard that was being held by cranes.

San Diego State’s offense

A win is a win but those expecting to see Ryan Lindley to open up the playbook and have Jalen Mayden throw the ball a lot was not to be the case. Being in shotgun more was a nice surprise in an effort to show off maybe a potential passing game.

The ground game was better but does not seem to be solved to what it was just a few years ago. The offense wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad either. The team settled for field goals and missed one as well.

Perhaps the expectation of a new OC taking over and one that threw the ball a lot while at San Diego State is still a work in progress.

The college football season is here! There were three Week 0 games that happened within the Mountain West, and also some conferences that have matchups for the bowl season.

There will be weekly bowl projections throughout the year and Week 0 is no different, despite the small sample size.

The MAC and Pac-12 are bowl matchups for the league and while it would take a big downfall for USC to be in the Los Angeles Bowl, there is a chance they could end up in a New Year’s Six game to face a Mountain West team.

Changes are minimal this week but we will keep updating these matchups after every game week.

– Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs MAC
– Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl vs Pac-12
– New Mexico Bowl vs Conference USA
– Barstool Arizona Bowl vs MAC
– EasyPost Hawai’i Bowl vs American Athletic

Mountain West has an affiliation to fill if needed …
– Guaranteed Rate Bowl vs Big Ten or Big 12

To be determined among the Group of Five conferences … as other options
– Duluth Trading Co. Cure Bowl vs Group of Five
– Frisco Bowl vs Group of Five
– RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl vs Group of Five
– SERVPRO First Responder Bowl vs Group of Five

Recap of the game

[mm-video type=playlist id=01g1kx1m9c8rz2mjgq player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

San Diego State edged out Ohio, 20-13, on Saturday evening at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. This was San Diego State’s first season-opening win since 2021.

It was a defensive game that saw the Aztecs outlast the Bobcats. The Bobcats attempted to erase a 14-point deficit in the final three minutes of the game. The Aztecs needed its defense to stand tall with an interception that capped off the win.

San Diego State and Ohio traded field goals in the first quarter. Ohio kicker Gianni Spetic put the Bobcats ahead, 6-3, with a 40-yard field goal at the 4:44 mark in the second quarter.

The Bobcats earned another offensive possession before halftime, but San Diego State’s defense closed the door on another scoring opportunity for Ohio. Ohio quarterback CJ Harris threw an interception to San Diego State safety Cedarious Barfield.

The interception set up an offensive drive for Jalen Mayden and the Aztecs. San Diego State tight end Mark Redman caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Mayden in the final seconds of the first half. San Diego State entered the intermission with a 10-6 lead.

In the first half, Ohio’s offense received a significant blow after quarterback Kurtis Rourke left the game with an injury. Ohio’s offense struggled to garner any traction in Rourke’s absence.

After a scoreless third quarter, San Diego State orchestrated a drive that culminated in Redman’s second receiving touchdown in the red zone with 5:39 left in the game. San Diego State led Ohio by two touchdowns, 20-6. The Bobcats scored its first touchdown of the game when Harris connected with Miles Cross in the red zone in the final two minutes.

Mayden finished the evening with 164 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. San Diego State registered 309 yards of total offense.

The Aztecs return to action against Idaho State next Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PT.

Week 0 2023 Mountain West Football: Best Bets

A look at the Mountain West betting odds for Week 0

Contact/Follow @J0shFr3d & @MWCwire

What are the oddsmakers saying about these match ups?

Late in the week we will look at odds and recent lines and make our best picks and bets. Odds courtesy of Vegas Insider.

It’s time for College Football to start again. We’ve reached week zero and it’s time to get your wallets ready. There are three Mountain West games to look at this week and let’s see if we can get off to a good start this year.

Ohio @ San Diego State (-3, O/U 48.5)

Ohio is looking to make an impact in the MAC. San Diego State looks to have found a QB in Jalen Mayden, but it remains to be seen what they can do. Ohio is coming off a 10-4 season, while San Diego State is coming off a 7-6 year. Teams change every year, but I’m sticking with my pick this week and going with Ohio to win outright.

Pick: Ohio ML

Hawai’i @ Vanderbilt (-17.5, O/U 55.5)

The spread feels like a trap game for college football bettors. Last year’s line of 9.5 was obliterated as Vanderbilt won 63-10. Hawai’i head coach Timmy Chang got the Warriors to calm down as the year went on, but they could go either direction this year. The Commodores lose a decent amount of experience, so the over feels the safe bet here.

Pick: Over

San Jose State @ USC (-30.5, O/U 66.5)

This spread seems almost insulting to the Spartans. Yes, the Trojans has transfer talent coming in, but San Jose State isn’t a team to look past. They’ve put a scare into a few teams these past few years. The Spartans aren’t going to win this game, but a backdoor cover against the Trojans backups isn’t out of the question.

Pick: San Jose State +30.5

Keys to the game.

When you go against a team with a high-scoring offense, you must run the ball well to keep that offense off the field. With three returning offensive linemen, San Diego State must run the ball successfully. Several options earned a handful of carries in 2022, including Kenan Christon (71 rushes, 261 yards), Jaylon Armstead (52 rushes, 213 yards), and Cam Davis (46 rushes, 151 yards).

Hawaii at Vanderbilt (-17), 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network or stream with a free trial on FuboTV | Preview

Keys to the game

Hawaii will look to capitalize on an unproven Commodore secondary when they unveil Coach Timmy Chang’s version of the Run and Shoot. The Warriors started the transition to the beloved offense midway through last season and spent the offseason fine tuning the playbook and getting the quarterbacks and receivers on the same page. As Hawaii fans know, in this scheme, the offense goes where the quarterback goes and Junior Brayden Schager will get the nod for the Bows.

San Jose State at No. 6 USC (-31), 8 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network or stream with a free trial on FuboTV | Preview

Keys to the game

San Jose State will be in for a long day. The Spartans likely and should make some plays early on and give USC a bit of a wake up call with a few big plays.

The Spartans need to do their best to keep momentum on offense and hope a bit that defensive coordinator Alex Grinch does not figure out. If — a big one — the Trojans defense gives up yards and thus points then this game could be fun.

The real key beyond the offense trying to go toe-to-toe with future No. 1 pick in USC QB Caleb Williams, and that is the defense forcing enough pressure. San Jose State lost key defenders so it is mostly a new bunch and they will need to play over their heads to get to the backfield to make Williams uncomfortable. It will be tough but this is the way that San Jose State can maybe hang with USC.

Week 0 is here

Jeremy is going solo to preview the three Mountain West games this week. There is Ohio traveling to San Diego State, Hawaii going way East to face Vanderbilt, and San Jose State traveling down the coast to face USC.

This will be a tough week for the conference, especially with the USC and Vanderbilt games. Both have high double-digit betting lines. One seems more likely to cover than not. Then there is going to be a sneaky good game with the Aztecs about a field goal favorite over the Bobcats.

It is Week 0 and football is back!!
