WKU vs Rice Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

The passing game continues to be devastating.

It didn’t even go ballistic against Middle Tennessee last week and the Hilltoppers were still able to win easily. On a four-game winning streak, they’re a win away from being bowl eligible all while still being in the mix for the Conference USA championship.

They win this and beat Marshall next week, and they’re the East champs.

Does Rice have the passing game to keep up the pace? Not even close. They’re throwing reasonably well, but the pass defense has been rocky and the defense isn’t calming down hard enough – it’s not taking the ball away and has a tough time against midrange passing attacks.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Rice Will Win

SLOWWWWWWWWWW.

No, Rice doesn’t have the defense to keep up with Bailey Zappe and the WKU offense, but it’s putting up over 200 passing yards pre game without a problem lately and balanced things out on the ground in last week’s loss at Charlotte.

To do this, though, the O has to have the ball for close to 40 minutes and get this into the fourth quarter close. Rice leads Conference USA in time of possession, and WKU is among the worst in the nation at controlling the clock.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

The Hilltoppers will have a few more problems than it might like. Rice will be able to keep this relatively close for a while by grinding down the clock, but it’ll all burst open for a scoring stretch for a WKU attack that can’t be held down by this secondary.

Rice vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Will the real Rice finally show up?

It pulled off a shocker against UAB and looked like it actually had a path to getting to a bowl game, and then …

Pffffffft. The air went out of the balloon in a loss to an awful North Texas team. However, the offense has a passing attack, it should be able to run well against a porous Charlotte defense, and this is when the O should be in control of the game.

Rice is 11th in the nation in time of possession as it grinds games down, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Charlotte Will Win

Charlotte is 10th. It knows how to control games.

Rice doesn’t do nearly enough defensively to come up with big plays, and the offense isn’t explosive enough to pick up the slack. It has to win by control, shortening the game, and hoping to be around to take over in the end.

Charlotte might not have a great defense – it’s a big, big problem – but it can control games, too. In this case, it’s going against an O that’s not going come up with enough big moments to bust the 49ers out of their style.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte will get back after a rough run of three road games after the last four – all losses.

The home offense will be a bit more productive, the running game will be okay, and the Rice attack won’t be able to take advantage of the pours D on the other side.

North Texas vs Rice Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

The Rice offense isn’t good enough to keep up if North Texas can get out to a huge start.

Shocking win over UAB aside, the Owls still only came up with 346 yards of total O, there isn’t enough of a running game, and the passing attack isn’t built to bomb away to keep up in a firefight.

The 30 points scores last week against the Blazers were the most against any FBS team, with only one other game with over 17.

North Texas has its issues, but the offense is versatile, balanced, and it wouldn’t have a problem getting into a back-and-forth battle, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Rice Will Win

The North Texas defense isn’t good enough.

The offense might have enough parts to come up with over 200 yards both running and passing if everything goes right, but the line allows way too many plays behind the line. It’s that other side that’s the issue.

The run defense stuffed Liberty last week, but it allowed over 300 yards through the air for the second straight game in yet another loss. The Mean Green are allowing 35 points per game, they’re turning the ball over way too much, and Rice should be able to take control of all of that because …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Slower and steadier should win the race here.

Rice is terrific at owning the time of possession battle, and it should be able to grind a bit – even if the running game isn’t great – by converting on just about every important third down.

The Owls will show off decent balance with one of the most efficient and effective offensive days of the year. All of a sudden, Rice will win four of its last five games as it makes a sneaky push for a bowl game.

Rice vs UAB Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Can the offense work?

It’s a low bar to set, but Rice is now 2-0 when it gets to 315 yards and 0-4 when it doesn’t.

UAB’s offense has been fine, but it hasn’t hit 400 yards in any of the last three games with a passing attack that’s struggling to crank up the big production.

Rice doesn’t throw a ton of picks, and it has to avoid the big mistakes against a UAB that got most of its takeaways in two games. This is the week the Owl offense has to finally start establishing something on the ground against a team that loves to control the clock, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UAB Will Win

The UAB defense has been just that good.

There were problems against Liberty, but the D allowed 21 points or fewer in five of the other six games. The pass defense is a rock, and this isn’t the time when the Rice ground game is about to get going.

Rice is great at controlling the clock – and it needs to do it in this – but UAB is better at it. Best of all for the Blazers, the Owls just don’t know how to put the biscuit in the basket – they’re miserable at capitalizing on their drives into the red zone …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Rice even get enough drives to get inside the 20? It’s only been there once in the last two games.

UAB might not be cranking up the giant offensive numbers, but it’s efficient, it’s not making the giant mistakes lately, and the defense is taking care of the rest.

College Football Daily Cavalcade: The American Athletic Conference has expanded by adding Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, UTSA, and UAB. What does it all mean? What’s next?

College Football Daily Cavalcade: American Athletic Conference Expansion

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

Sorry if this take sucks, it’s not my fault …

It had a dream to get bigger with a slew of Big 12 takes, but it ended up expanding with thoughts on Conference USA.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01f1343a1wt7q817p7 player_id=none image=https://collegefootballnews.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Not that it applies to other areas of our world or anything, but sometimes, you take the win and move forward.

The American Athletic Conference expanded with UAB, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, and UTSA. What does it all mean? Here are 10 quick thoughts on the big move.

1. So now with these six, the American Athletic Conference, at least for football, will look like this when it all starts once they’re in – a specific date hasn’t been finalized.

Assume the league goes back to two divisions looking something like this …

East: Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Navy, Temple, UAB, USF

West: Memphis, North Texas, Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, UTSA

2. Beyond everything else, it’s a happy day – at least for everyone other than Conference USA.

It’s a good business move for the American Athletic Conference in a take-the-win sort of way, and for the schools, this is massive.

It’s a step up from C-USA for Rice and North Texas, and it’s a giant validation for the other four schools.

3. Remember, UAB football was in a self-induced coma in 2015 and 2016.

It’s a minor miracle that it still has a program, much less it getting to have a moment like this.

Florida Atlantic football started from scratch under the late Howard Schnellenberger and joined the FCS world back in 2004, UTSA has only been in the FCS since 2012, and Charlotte is still new to football, becoming a major college program in 2015. Now they’re all in the American Athletic Conference.

4. It might have been a necessary business move for the American Athletic Conference, but it’s a gigantic step back to what was potentially on the table a few months ago. No program-shaming here, but UAB, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, and UTSA doesn’t move the national needle even a little bit.

5. There’s no replacing new Big 12 members Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF.

Think of expansion as Moneyball – the American Athletic Conference couldn’t replace Damon and Giambi. It has to hope that the six newly-added schools can add up to overcome some of the revenue hit. It won’t, but it’s a needed move to strengthen the league’s membership. But …

6. Things are a whole lot different than they were a few months ago.

When the Big 12 appeared to be mortally wounded with Texas and Oklahoma leaving for the SEC, there was a real thought that the American Athletic Conference would go get Big 12 schools, not the other way around.

The AAC went from – at least in the sports media sewing circle – possibly pulling in West Virginia and maybe Iowa State and Oklahoma State to losing three of its biggest schools and adding five from Conference USA.

7. Again, not to dog the six programs coming in, but this cements the Mountain West as the sixth best conference in college football – at least until the Pac-12 wakes up.

The AAC landing Florida Atlantic gives USF a natural rival, and the state of Texas becomes more emphasized, but these six aren’t going to entice the big schools from the Mountain West to possibly flip leagues.

The AAC landing Big 12 schools wasn’t realistically going to work, but chatting up San Diego State – with the Pac-12 not claiming to be interested in expanding right now – and Boise State, and some of the others from the Mountain West in an attempt to become a giant national conference wasn’t crazy.

The six schools the AAC just landed don’t up the brand enough for the Mountain West schools to be interested.

8. Don’t assume this is slowing down.

At some point, the Big 12 will realize that going after USF – Tampa, rivalry with UCF, massive enrollment – makes a whole lot of sense, and the AAC hanging on to Memphis is a mild upset.

Conference USA still has a few attractive schools – most notably Marshall and Southern Miss. The American Athletic Conference might keep moving here, and going after FIU – to have three schools in Florida – might make sense.

9. So now what for Conference USA?

It just lost five of its 12 members, and others wanted to go, too – UTEP isn’t all that happy right now. That leaves FIU, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Southern Miss, UTEP, and WKU.

Raiding the Sun Belt would be an instant reaction, but the easier move might be to entice a few of the independents to join in. Adding Army, UConn and UMass would at least give the conference some bulk, but the big get – even with a whole slew of issues – would be Liberty. However, the Sun Belt is about to go hard after all the independents, too. And …

10. Get ready for some schools from the FCS world to start becoming factors.

James Madison, North Dakota State, and Sam Houston State are among several schools on the verge of stepping up. There’s nowhere else for the Sun Belt and Conference USA to go, so we might see as many as ten new schools in the FBS world in the near future.

UTSA vs Rice Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Rice was supposed to be able to run the ball a bit – at least that was the hope as the Mike Bloomgren era rolls on – but the passing attack has been able to rise up over the last few weeks with a solid receiving corps and QB Jake Constantine rising up into a bigger role.

He’s hitting 77% of his throws, the passing game has pushed past the 200-yard mark in the last two games – both wins – and it all led to two wins to finally get the season going.

UTSA might be playing well, but Rice lost its first three games to Arkansas, Houston, and Texas – this could be a playing-team-its-own-size game and a breakout moment for a team building up to a game like this.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UTSA Will Win

The Roadrunners have been terrific.

They’re used to pulling off tight wins – four of the six were by seven points or fewer – they’re great at coming through in tough spots, and they’re doing it but not screwing up and a good passing attack that’s getting stronger.

UTSA is the best in Conference USA at avoiding getting flagged, turnovers aren’t a big issue, and the special teams haven’t been bad. They’re doing the little things right, all while veteran QB Frank Harris is starting to push the ball down the field a whole lot more, averaging over nine yards per pass over the last two games.

The Rice defense has been okay, but it got rolled for well over 300 yards in each of the last two games – the UTSA offense will be efficient.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Rice is starting to show what it can do, and it might be better than its 2-3 record, but UTSA is playing with confidence, it’s finding ways to win games, and it’s doing it all by – again – not screwing up.

Rice will battle, but UTSA will win the time of possession battle by at least five minutes and grind down the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Southern Miss vs Rice Game Preview

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The Golden Eagles might be having a few issues with their offense – at least against FBS teams – but all things considered, the run defense hasn’t been too bad.

Alabama ran for 211 yards last week, but no one else has been able to get to 60 yards on the ground. There’s a good pass rush and plenty of tackles for loss to get to the running games before they get started.

Rice wants and needs to run the ball to survive, but it’s only got moving against Texas Southern and hasn’t been able to do too much against anyone else.

Making things worse, Rice can’t do anything in the red zone. It has the nation’s worst D inside the 20 and the second-worst O, but …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Rice Will Win

Southern Miss doesn’t have the offense to take advantage of Rice’s defensive problems – and that includes when it has a shot to put points on the board in the red zone.

Like Rice, Southern Miss only produced on the ground against the FCS team on the schedule. It was stuffed for -1 yard on the ground against Troy and hasn’t pushed past 125 yards against anyone else.

The passing game isn’t helping – the Golden Eagles have yet to come up with more than 160 yards through the air.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams aren’t just looking for a real win, they’re looking to merely be productive.

Rice will be come up with more offensive balance and will do far more to control the clock. Both teams are even enough to keep this interesting, but the Owls will get a little more out of their offensive front in the second half.

Rice vs Texas Southern Game Preview

Why Texas Southern Will Win

Rice is having an impossible time stopping the run. If you can hand the ball off and block with any sort of competence, you’re going to gain  yards on this group.

The Owls have the nation’s second-worst run defense, and that goes along with an offense that put up just 24 points in the first three games. But …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Rice Will Win

Texas Southern isn’t Arkansas, Houston, or Texas.

Rice should’ve been more competitive in those three games, but now it gets a Texas Southern team that got ripped in its first two games – including 66-7 against Baylor – and also has problems on defense.

The Tigers have allowed a whopping 1,200 yards in their first few games and also can’t stop the run.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is where Rice gets to have a little fun.

It’s been playing around with its quarterback situation, but in this it’ll just hand off, gain yards, repeat. Texas Southern doesn’t have the O to keep up after getting down early.

Texas (1-1) vs Rice (0-2) Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Rice hasn’t been able to get the offense going, and there hasn’t been much fun in losses to Arkansas and Houston, but it really is a decent team that should be far more dangerous as the season goes on.

It also helps to be catching Texas before the Big 12 season starts.

Yeah, the Longhorns will be fired up after getting whacked by Arkansas, but the game exposed a slew of issues. The run defense struggled to come up with a big stop, the offense was inconsistent, and Rice somehow has to run the ball and and come up with third down stops to take advantage of both issues.

The pass rush hasn’t been bad, and the pieces are there to start running better and do more to control the clock. Generate pressure, don’t turn the ball over, hope Texas presses and makes mistakes – Rice has to do that, but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Will Win

Rice hasn’t had a lick of luck so far offensively.

The ground attack is supposed to be a factor after years of trying to put it all together under head coach Mike Bloomgren, QB Luke McCaffrey threw three picks in last week’s 44-7 loss to Houston, and there isn’t enough happening to move the chains.

Worse yet, the defense isn’t getting off the field. Arkansas and Houston combined to convert 46% of their third down tries, the D isn’t generating enough takeaways to make up for the problems, and the special teams are screwing up, too.

Rice just isn’t tight enough to put together the perfect performance needed to pull this off.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

No, Texas, there’s no need to panic quite yet.

The Arkansas game was a disaster defensively, and it showed how far there is to go to get from good to elite, but there’s enough talent to roll though this and go into the Big 12 season with some momentum.

The quarterback juggling of Casey Thompson and Hudson Card will get all of the attention, but the defense is the real story. It needs to pitch a good game after getting ripped through by the Hogs, and it will.

Rice will continue to have problems moving the ball, it won’t do enough on third downs, and Texas will start to look the part again with ease.

Arkansas (0-0) vs Rice (0-0) Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

The Owls have to control the clock and keep the chains moving, and it all starts on the offensive front.

They don’t have a dominant group returning, but it’s going to be one of the best in Conference USA with all five starters back to go along with a nice mix of depth and size to keep everyone fresh. The line has to be better at keeping defenses out of the backfield, but the ground game should work around a quick young group of backs.

On the other side, can the Rice run defense keep it all going? With eight of the top nine tacklers back, yeah.

Why Arkansas Will Win

After years of building and rebuilding, and after a year of getting things in place under head coach Sam Pittman, the guys are there to be a whole lot better defensively.

Barry Odom is a whale of a defensive coordinator, and he’s got the guys to step up right away with a terrific linebacking corps, a whole lot of defensive backs who took their lumps in 2020, and in all, ten players with regular starting experience back.

As long as the Hogs can get up early – the passing game should take a few shots with a good-looking receiving corps and TE Hudson Henry – the D will take care of the rest. This isn’t enough Rice firepower to keep up.

What’s Going To Happen

Rice is going to be plucky.

Arkansas will get up in the first quarter, but it’ll struggle to push ahead as a few first half drives stall and a couple of turnovers lead to Owl points.

The production will kick in as the second half goes on. The Hog defense will settle in, QB KJ Jefferson will get into a rhythm, and there won’t be a whole lot of drama with the final score looking worse than the actual game.
