Celtics Lab 267: Boston on the precipice of Banner 18 after taking commanding 3-0 finals lead

Revel in the Celtics being on the cusp of the long-coveted Banner 18 with us as we try to soak it all in.

The Boston Celtics have taken a commanding 3-0 series lead vs. the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals, thanks to some clutch play from Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum as they combined for 61 points in Boston’s 106-99 Game 3 victory, and elite defense late in the game’s second half.

That the win came with star Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis having to sit out the game with an injury sustained n game 2 makes the outcome even more impressive given the haymakers Dallas threw early. Now, Boston finds themselves with a series lead that has never been overcome and a chance to close out the finals on the Mavericks’ home court.

Will they win this series in four or five games? Will Porzingis play again in the finals? Where are the haters who told us Boston has no bench and wilts under pressure? And most importantly, how many bouquets of flowers do we collectively need to give the Jays, Joe Mazzulla, and Brad Stevens?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast took it all in after Game 3 with an eye to what might be coming next. Revel in the Celtics being on the cusp of the long-coveted Banner 18 with us as we try to soak it all in.

The Boston Celtics now lead the 2024 NBA Finals 2-0 after defeating the Dallas Mavericks 105-98 at home. The action now swings to Dallas with Boston firmly in control of the series. Teams up 2-0 in the NBA finals have gone on to win the title 86% of the time

Boston had a difficult night shooting the ball, and went 10-for-39 from deep. This gave Dallas a small margin to work with, because the Celtics did just about everything else at a very high level. They had 29 assists for the game, they went 19-for-20 from the free throw line, and they defended with poise. Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic had 32 points to go with 11 rebounds and 11 assists, but like we saw in Game 1, this wasn’t enough to keep Dallas afloat for a full 48 minutes. Credit Jrue Holiday, who led the way for the Celtics with 26 points, piloting Boston to a dominant win.

Let’s jump in and see what went down in Game 2 of the 2024 NBA Finals, a 105-98 Celtics victory.

Kristaps Porzingis once again came off the bench for the Celtics, subbing into the game for Al Horford after a few minutes. In Game 1 this helped power Boston to a dominant opening period.

Here in Game 2, the same trick worked, and Boston went on a quick 8-2 run once Porzingis checked in. His unique blend of offense and defense was critical for the Celtics, and he logged 8 points in the first quarter alone. Porzingis ended the night with 12 points, but his rim protection was key.

This time around, Dallas countered, thanks in part to a much more physical approach overall. In Game 1, both teams combined for 5 fouls in the first quarter. In Game 2, that number was 13, punctuating how much more physical the action was Sunday night.

Cold shooting was a big issue for Boston. The Celtics shot 3-for-15 from deep in the first half, a major reason they weren’t able to pull away.

Everything else was clicking for the guys in green. They hit their free throws. They took care of the ball. The Celtics just couldn’t find a shooting touch. Jayson Tatum for example went 2-for-10 in the first two quarters, but had 3 rebounds and 8 assists, tying a career high for a half. He ended the night with 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 12 assists.

Dallas was the opposite. The Mavericks went 5-for-11 from the foul line with 8 turnovers in the first half. But thanks to 23 points from Doncic in the first half, Dallas kept things close. Boston led 54-51 after two.[

Jrue Holiday’s offense was crucial for keeping Boston afloat in an otherwise slow first half. His playmaking and shot creation was critical, as was his defensive intensity against Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Credit to the entire Celtics team for maintaining their composure even as they struggled to hit their shots into the second half. Instead, Boston continued to pound the paint. By meeting and exceeding Dallas’ early aggressiveness, the Celtics not only slowed the Mavericks down, but generated more looks on offense.

Doncic continued to manufacture buckets, but he slowed down considerably in the third. But as Boston continued to struggle from deep, the Celtics held only a slim lead with the final quarter on deck.

This was a game the Celtics won on the margins. They took care of business on the free throw line, they limited turnovers, and they weathered Dallas’ initial blitz of physicality. This was apparent in the fourth quarter. As the Mavericks began to fade, Boston held steady.

Boston also scored by committee. Five players scored 12 or more points, even if shots from deep weren’t falling. Dallas simply couldn’t keep pace with such an onslaught, even if Doncic had a monster night.

With two games in the books, Boston has twice looked like the more polished team to close games. Let’s see if they can maintain that level as the series shifts to Dallas.

Celtics Lab 265: On Boston’s statement Game 1 win, what to expect from the Mavs in Game 2

The Boston Celtics took Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals in emphatic fashion. How’d they do it, an dwhat happens in Game 2?

The Boston Celtics took Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals in emphatic fashion thanks to a surprisingly spry Kristaps Porzingis in his first game in the ’24 NBA Playoffs in over a month, and perhaps the best defensive game of Jaylen Brown‘s career.

Even on a night that saw Jayson Tatum go 6-of-16 from the floor, he still found ways to impact the game, and Boston as a whole limited Dallas to just 9 assists and 4 shot attempts between bigs Daniel Gafford and Derrick Lively II. The Celtics roared out to a 29-point lead only to see the Mavs cut it to 8 points in the third frame, but a healthy dose of the clamps coupled with a trademark Boston scoring barrage put Dallas away for good.

To talk over what they saw in Game 1 of the series, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast, Alex Goldberg, Cameron Tabatabaie, and Justin Quinn, convened postgame from TD Garden.

They also preview what might be coming in Game 2 of the series on Sunday evening, so if you want to gloat a bit or just need to get your bearings, this is the pod for you.

The Boston Celtics are headed back to the NBA Finals after defeating the Indiana Pacers 105-102 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals. With the win, Boston sweeps the series and will now look to earn an 18th title in franchise history.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown led the way for the Celtics. They combined for 55 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 assists. In fact, Boston got strong contributions up and down the roster, but this wasn’t enough to keep up with the Pacers. Indiana shot the lights out in the first half, and looked a step ahead of the Celtics defense from the opening tip. Boston hung tough, however. The tightened up on defense in the last period, recapturing the lead in the final moments of the fourth quarter. Derrick White put the Celtics ahead with a corner 3-pointer, and a Jrue Holiday offensive rebound secured the win.

Let’s take a closer look at Game 4 and recap a 105-102 Celtics win against the Pacers.

Boston stuck with their usual defensive strategy to open the game. All series long, the Celtics have prioritized locking down the perimeter and otherwise relied on individual efforts to protect the rim. As one of the best offenses in NBA history, Indiana has been able to score in bunches in the painted area as a result, though they have taken far fewer 3-pointers. This trade-off has been a key part of Boston’s defense all series and all postseason

Indeed here in the first quarter, the formula looked like it would pay off once again, however narrowly. Boston won the period 29-27 after shooting 5-for-10 from deep in the period.

For the game, the Celtics went 14-for-44 on 3-pointers, a good but not great outing, and the Pacers looked ready to upend this shooting imbalance in Game 4. Though they cooled off in the second half, Indiana’s prowess from deep was a big theme early in the game.

The second quarter saw more of the same. Indiana scored with relative ease around the rim, and but the Pacers were more willing to shoot from distance. The tandem of Ben Shephard and Andrew Nembhard were crucial in this effort, and they hit a number of big 3-pointers in the first half.

On the Celtics side of the equation, scoring was a no-nonsense affair. The ball could have moved a bit more, and Boston didn’t really force the issue in transition. Still, the guys in green scored consistently enough, and stayed one step ahead of the Pacers.

The close to the quarter saw the Celtics miss a number of open 3-pointers, and as a result, Boston took a slim 58-57 lead into the second half.

The Pacers connected on a flurry of 3-pointers to open the frame, despite pretty good defensive pressure from Boston. Celtics fans know well enough what happens when an opponent gets hot in the postseason.

The action got a bit more physical as the period progressed, a welcome sign for Boston. The Pacers were among the fastest teams in the NBA this year, and much of their scoring prowess is predicated on pace and being quicker than the other team. Derrick White and Al Horford were both instrumental in slowing Indiana down.

The Celtics couldn’t take advantage. Turnovers were an issue in the period, while Indiana continued to make shots. Boston only scored 22 points in the quarter, and trailed 83-80 at the end of the third.

Indiana led for much of the fourth quarter, although Boston hung tough. Brown and Tatum each hit a number of critical shots that kept the Pacers from pulling away.

Things remained chippy in this period, and both teams looked exhausted. This is where Boston’s experience appear to come into play. In the final minutes of the quarter, the Celtics seemed to tighten their focus, save a few lapses. By settling in, Boston slowly marched back, capturing and holding the lead in the final minute.

The Boston Celtics grabbed a 114-111 win against the Indiana Pacers in Game 3 of the East finals Saturday night on the road. Boston trailed big time for much of the night, but ultimately moved ahead to earn a 3-0 series lead.

Indiana had a historic open to the game. They scored 69 points across the first two quarters, shooting 63.6% from the field in the process. PHOTOS: Boston vs. Indiana – Brown and Celtics cruise to 126-110 Game 2 win

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics’ Game 2 of their East finals series vs. the Pacers.

The Boston Celtics defeated the Indiana Pacers 126-110, taking a 2-0 series lead in the 2024 East finals. The next two games will be played in Indiana over the weekend, with the Celtics two wins away from a trip to the NBA Finals.

Jaylen Brown was the key for Boston tonight. He finished the game with 40 points on an efficient 14-for-27 shooting performance. Even during the stretches where the Celtics defense looked a little flat, Brown was able to manufacture offense. On the Indiana side of the equation, Pascal Siakam was also excellent. He had 28 points of his own. Indiana didn’t have enough firepower to keep pace otherwise, however, especially as All-NBA guard Tyrese Haliburton left the game early with a leg injury. The Pacers kept things moderately close thanks to a couple of second half 3-pointers, but it was an easy victory for the Celtics Thursday night.

PHOTOS: Boston vs. Cleveland – Cavs blitz Celtics with 118-94 Game 2 win

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics’ Game 1 of their second round series vs. the Cavs. xx

The Boston Celtics fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers 118-94 at TD Garden Thursday night. The series now stands at 1-1, and the next two games will be played in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers were the more aggressive team from the jump. They used their speed to press the Celtics offense, resulting in a ton of open looks at the rim. For the game, Cleveland logged 60 points in the paint. To make matters worse for Boston, the Cavs shot a blistering13-for-28 on 3-pointers, while the Celtics were ice-cold from deep. Cleveland was simply the more polished and focused team, as evidenced by the final score. Much like Game 2 of the opening round of the postseason, the road team took care of business while Boston never found the right gear.

PHOTOS: Boston vs. Miami – Celtics obliterate Heat 118-84 in Game 5

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics’ Game 5 of their first round series vs. the Heat.

The Boston Celtics defeated the Miami Heat 118-84 in Game 5 Wednesday night. With the win, Boston advances to the second round of the postseason and will face either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Orlando Magic. This is the seventh time in eight seasons, Boston has won at least one series in the playoffs.

Tonight’s outcome was never in question. Boston was red-hot from offense from the jump, especially from deep. The Celtics ended the game 16-for-30 from deep. On the other side of the action, Miami couldn’t generate enough offense to keep pace, and their defense lacked the intensity and physicality we saw in earlier games. A 34-point final margin is tied for the third-biggest victory in franchise postseason history.

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics’ Game 5 of their first round series vs. the Heat.
