2021 CFN Conference USA Preseason Rankings: East

1. Marshall Thundering Herd

Quick Take: It’s one of the most interesting Group of Five teams coming into the 2021 season – it’s Conference USA title or bust. New head man Charles Huff has to pull the Herd offense out of the nosedive that screwed up 2020, and he’s got the parts in place to do it – especially for the passing game. If the D isn’t the best in the conference, it’s second.

2. WKU Hilltoppers

Quick Take: The Hilltoppers will be deep in the hunt for the Conference USA title – at the very least, they’ll be among the top three teams. The pass rush will be a killer, but the real fun comes with an upgraded passing game. WKU took the parts from a big-time Houston Baptist air show to revamp the O.
WKU Preview | Schedule

3. Florida Atlantic Owls

Quick Take: Willie Taggart should have his Owls in the mix for the Conference USA title. The lines are among the best in the league, the special teams should be great, and if the quarterback play is fine, everything is there to come up with a big season.
FAU Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532444]

4. FIU Golden Panthers

Quick Take: After an ugly 2020, Butch Davis should have a whole lot more success in 2021. It starts with one of the league’s most talented secondaries, a good kicking game, and a promising ground game that should take more control of games.
FIU Preview | Schedule

5. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

Quick Take: The Blue Raiders will be in for a weird season. The team isn’t all that great, but it should push for a bowl game with a whole lot of winnable games built into the slate. The secondary is good thanks to the best group of safeties in the league, but can the offense keep up the pace?
MTSU Preview | Schedule

6. Charlotte 49ers

Quick Take: The 49ers should have a decent passing game, but can the defense hold up? There’s experience, and the coaching is solid, but the schedule doesn’t have a lot of breaks – the 49ers miss most of the easier teams from the West.
Charlotte Preview | Schedule

7. Old Dominion Monarchs

Quick Take: Welcome back, ODU football. After taking last year off, and with head coach Ricky Rahne having to wait a season to get his era going, this is Conference USA’s biggest wild-card team. What’s going to work right away? The offense should get going early on.

2021 Preseason CFN Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year

QB Carson Strong, Jr. Nevada

It’s going to be a huge year for Mountain West quarterbacks. Boise State’s Hank Bachmeier is going to be special if he can stay healthy, Fresno State’s Jake Heaner will put up massive numbers, San Jose State’s Nick Starkel is playing his 14th year of college football, and Kentucky transfer Terry Wilson should jumpstart New Mexico. But Nevada has a guy who’s about to rise up the NFL Draft charts in a hurry.

The 6-4, 215-pound Strong doesn’t run much, but he’s accurate – hitting 70% of his passes last year with just four picks – and he knows how to push the downfield passing game. The Wolf Pack are loaded, and Strong’s about to come up with a giant year.

2021 Preseason CFN Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year

DE Cade Hall, Sr. San Jose State

Take your pick of at least ten Mountain West defensive players who have a case to be here, and it’s hardly even a lock that Hall will be the best defensive end in a conference loaded with terrific pass rushers. Even the guy on the other side of Hall – Viliami Fehoko – might deserve this spot.

But going into the season, the 6-3, 270-pound force should once again be one of the nation’s best pass rushers after coming up with ten sacks and 12 tackles for loss in just seven games. With a loaded defense around him to take the heat off, Hall should dominate.

2021 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

RB Sincere McCormick, Jr.

He’s only 5-9 and 200 pounds, but he’s tough as nails as a workhorse, he can catch the ball enough to be a factor, and he’s got the burst and quickness to crank up big plays. He was second in the nation in rushing with 1,487 yards and 11 scores, coming up with two or more touchdowns four times. He’s once again going to be the focal point and offensive star of a rising team.

2021 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

S Rashad Wisdom, Jr.

The dangerous all-around defender made a big impact in his first season, but he took things to a whole other level as a sophomore. For the second straight season he came up with a pick six – and made four interceptions in all last year – and was one of the top tacklers in the league averaging close to eight stops per game. A great hitter who makes a whole lot of plays in the open field, he’s going to be even more of an intimidating force.

Rice Owls Football Schedule Analysis: The Owls live in the Southwest Conference world of yesteryear with Arkansas, Houston and Texas to start the season, but at least they don’t leave the great state of Texas until October 23rd at UAB.

That’s an issue – they have to play the Blazers on the road. However, they get Louisiana Tech, North Texas and Southern Miss at home as a wee bit of a payoff for a run of four road games in six weeks.

2021 Conference USA Rankings: Pre-Spring

Conference USA East

1. Marshall Thundering Herd

Why To Be Happy: The offense won’t be as bad as it was at the end of the year. It can’t be. New head coach Charles Huff brings in a background of offense after coaching up the running backs at Alabama over the last few years. All of the top skill guys are expected to be back, but …

What To Work On: The loss of Darius Hodge early to the NFL hurts. The other losses to the next level hurt, but they were expected – Hodge was 50/50. Offensively, everything was fine throughout the season, and then everything crashed with fewer than 270 yards in each of the last three games – all losses.

Bottom Line: It was a strange move to lose Doc Holliday after all of his success and a 7-0 start, but the program is going in a new direction with a new energy in Huff. The talent is there to think Conference USA championship or bust.

2. Florida Atlantic Owls

Why To Be Happy: Willie Taggart is starting to get the offensive parts. The defense got the job done last season, but the O couldn’t get going. Bringing in RB Johnny Ford from USF is a good step, landing Penn State WR John Dunmore helps, and there’s a good group of young quarterbacks to work around.

What To Work On: The D is getting back CB Zyon Gilbert and LB Caliph Brice, but DE Leighton McCarthy is off to the NFL. The D should be okay, but the offense has to find a spark after having one of the nation’s least-efficient passing games and averaging just 325 yards of total offense.

Bottom Line: Taggart had to fight through rebuilding in the COVID year, and now it’s time to take off. The offense has to get more out of the line and more playmakers have to show up, but the D should be great again

3. WKU Hilltoppers

Why To Be Happy: Oh will this be fun. Does the name Bailey Zappe ring any sort of a bell? All he did was put up ridiculous numbers against North Texas, Texas Tech, and Louisiana Tech, finishing the four-game season with 1,833 passing yards – well over 400 yards per game – with 15 touchdowns. Now he’s the WKU quarterback to an offense that needs the help. As if getting Zappe isn’t enough, two of his targets are coming along – along with three other new targets from the transfer portal.

What To Work On: More points. Welcome to the fundamental shift in how WKU does business after finishing 120th in the nation in total offense and 115th in passing efficiency. There’s going to be scoring this year, but it might take a bit.

Bottom Line: WKU has been fine, but it’s making a big push to take a step to the next level. Few teams have been more active in the transfer portal, but that’s not necessarily a plus with over 20 players leaving.

4. FIU Golden Panthers

Why To Be Happy: This was a relatively young team after the front-line starters and now the hope is for the new guys to be ready to roll right away to go along with a good nucleus. Start with the all-star defensive back brother tandem of Richard and Rishard Dames coming back along with LB Jamal Gates for one side. The O has its back in D’vonte Price, and former Maryland QB Max Bortenschlarger returns.

What To Work On: There’s a long way to go to get back to respectability after a disastrous shortened season throwing the ball. The offensive line is Job One, doing nothing in pass protection and struggling to get the ground game working.

Bottom Line: There should be a quick turnaround after a rotten 2020, but a whole slew of reserves who were supposed to be part of the turnaround are transferring out. Unless the O line can be better fast, it’s going to be another long year.

5. Charlotte 49ers

Why To Be Happy: The team is getting in a few nice transfers in QB James Foster from Texas A&M and RB Shadrick Byrd from Iowa, and landing DE Kofi Wardlow from Notre Dame should help a big-time need area.

What To Work On: Losing star S Ben DeLuca and DE Romeo McKnight takes away two key starters off the D that didn’t do enough last year. The pass rush her to emerge and far more big things have to happen behind the line.

Bottom Line: The offense should be ahead of the defense throughout the offseason, but if all the key guys can stay healthy – and if the D line can be a whole lot better, the 49ers can bounce back into a factor in the East.

6. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

Why To Be Happy: Yeah, do-it-all QB Asher O’Hara entered the transfer portal, but the program made up for it by landing NC State’s Bailey Hockman to likely take over. It might have been an inconsistent season overall, but there were a whole lot of underclassmen playing key roles on O, and most of the starters are back on D, but …

What To Work On: The defense has to be night-and-day better. It struggles throughout the season allowing 446 yards per game, and it was. disaster on third downs.

Bottom Line: The program has been too solid for too long to be so lousy, but major changes are being made starting with a new offensive coordinator. Middle Tennessee played for the Conference USA title in 2018 and fell off a cliff. This is a make-or-break year.

7. Old Dominion Monarchs

Why To Be Happy: After a year off in the COVID season, the Monarchs return relatively loaded and whole lot stronger. Start with landing UCF QB Darriel Mack and Georgia WR Trey Blount from the transfer portal to boost up a veteran base that waited to get going.

What To Work On: There’s a big turnover factor after missing 2020. The program’s last win over an FBS team was in early November of 2018, and there’s going to be a whole lot of new parts to work with on both sides of the ball.

Bottom Line: A massive disappointment in 2019, now Old Dominion is starting over. Head coach Ricky Rahne didn’t get his chance to get things going last year, and now comes a renewed energy and an X factor team for 2021.

Why UAB Will Win

UAB has the run defense to hold up.

The secondary has had a few issues, and Miami was able to run wild early in the year, but the Blazers have been great at preventing the big play through the air and force takeaways, and the defensive front is good enough to get into the backfield and be a problem.

No one other than Miami has been able to run for 200 yards on the UAB front, and the line did a decent job of holding up over the last three weeks before missing a whole lot of time.

How much does the time off matter? In a COVID era, obviously it isn’t all about resting up, and of course there’s going to be rust, but it’s been almost since weeks since the team has been able to play. It’ll be ready.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Rice Will Win

Rice just shut down Marshall.

The Thundering Herd still might be the best team in Conference USA by far, but they couldn’t do anything lsat week with five interceptions given away in a 20-0 loss to Rice.

The Owl defense allowed plenty of passing yards in the loss to Middle Tennessee and too many running yards against North Texas, but it stuffed Marshall for 245 yards of total offense.

Rice is 2-0 when allowing fewer than 385 yards and 0-2 when giving up more.

UAB hasn’t hit 360 yards in two of its last three games and has had a big problem with turnovers, giving it up twice or more in each of the last four games.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Can Rice build off that?

It’s not like the offense did much of anything against the amazing Herd defense, but Rice has a passing attack to bother the rarely-tested UAB secondary, and the run defense will keep Spencer Brown in check, and …

The Blazers will pull this off.

They’ve had enough time off to be ready, the offense will be balanced enough, and they’re not going to turn it over five times like Marshall did.

Marshall (7-0) vs Rice (1-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Rice Will Win

Mike Collins and the passing game continue to be ultra-efficient.

This is one of the few teams on the Marshall schedule with he receiving corps to be a problem, and Collins has been hot with ten touchdown passes and just one pick to get the good targets the ball.

Rice has the passing game, but its key is to be deliberate, control the clock, and keep the defense off the field. The Owls have kept the ball for way over 35 minutes per game, and they need to grind this down to a halt in what should be a relatively low-scoring game.

Slow it down. hope Marshall screws up, and take advantage of every opportunity.

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Marshall Will Win

Marshall won’t have any problems with a low-scoring slugfest. It has the defense, it has the running game, and it has the ability to keep the Owl offense from doing anything interesting.

The Owls don’t have the pass rush to be any sort of a bother for QB Grant Wells, but it’ll be the ground game that takes over and owns the game.

Rice hasn’t faced any real running game, and yet last week it got hit by North Texas for 269 yards.

This is an easy formula for the Herd – keep it conservative and expect the nation’s second-best defense and No. 1 scoring D to do the rest.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Marshall keeps on rolling through its schedule with ease, and it’s about to do it again.

Will the College Football Playoff top 25 rankings listen?

The Herd defense will stuff the Owls on third down after third down, and the offensive side won’t get cheated in the time of possession battle.

UTPE might not be winning, but that’s partly because it’s been on the road for the last four games.

Okay, so this is a fifth-straight road trip, but the passing game has been fine, the offense is moving the chains better than it has in years, and the defense is doing a decent job of keeping games in range – the UTSA blowout loss a few weeks ago notwithstanding.

Rice doesn’t have enough of a running game to worry about, there’s zero pass rush whatsoever and no pressure from the defensive front, and there are way too many turnovers. The Miners will create their own breaks.

Why Rice Will Win

The Rice passing game is going to be a problem. Michael Collins is a solid veteran quarterback, and he’s getting good seasons out of his underappreciated receiving corps.

Austin Trammell is one of the best deep threats in Conference USA, Jake Bailey is dangerous, and now the whole group just needs the ball a bit more.

For all the good things UTEP has been able to do – at least compared to past seasons – it’s coming off a rough day against a UTSA passing game that’s hardly Alabama’s. The Miners gave up over 300 yards and couldn’t stop anything, and now …

What’s Going To Happen

The Rice passing game will take over.

The Owls somehow managed to score just 17 points against a horrendous North Texas defense, and they’re not going to blow up on the Miners, but they’ll have enough of a deep passing game and do a strong enough job controlling the clock to get out with the second win of a rough and shortened season.
