Before the start of the 2023 college football season, there were two games on the calendar Ohio State fans — and likely players and coaches — circled. One was, of course, the Michigan game, but the other was against Penn State in October. That week is here and there’s a sea of hype surrounding what’ll take place in the ‘Shoe at high noon ET on Saturday.

This is — as they say — a “matchup” game, meaning the athleticism and skill will be fairly equal. That means execution, emotion, timely plays and intangibles will come into play to determine the winner.

There’s some worry with Ohio State fans over this one, and for good reason. The Nittany Lions have looked like one of the best teams in the country this year. But there are also reasons to believe OSU, the favored and higher ranked team (No. 3 to No. 6), will come out on top.

We’re a Buckeye homer site but do try to keep things as honest and unbiased as possible. If you’ve already read some of our preview stuff this week, you know not everyone on the site is picking the Buckeyes in this one.

Take that for what it’s worth.

However, the large majority of us do believe Ohio State will come out victorious on the banks of the Olentangy on Saturday, and we’re here to give you five reasons OSU has the victory bell ringing in late afternoon.

We’re on the doorstep of one of the biggest college football games of the year and involves YOUR Ohio State Buckeyes against a top ten opponent, the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Both teams have some pretty lofty dreams and goals that involve an East division title, Big Ten Championship, and College Football Playoff berth, and this game is a significant mile marker along that journey. The winner goes on to keep pace with Michigan, while the loser will have to get out the pom poms and voodoo dolls to try and stay in the conversation for all of those things.

We’re lucky here on the USA TODAY SMG network to have sister sites that cover some of the Ohio State opponents, and it just so happens there’s one that does a fantastic job of pumping out some Penn State content.

If you haven’t heard, there’s a fairly sizeable matchup in the Big Ten on Saturday. Two top-10 teams are set to rumble this weekend when Penn State travels to Columbus to take on Ohio State in the ‘Shoe at high noon.

Since it’s easily the biggest game on the college football schedule for Week 8, there’s going to be some visitors coming to the banks of the Olentangy. Not only will Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” be there, but so will ESPN’s “College GameDay.”

As it tradition, the show that’s been a staple of Saturday mornings for the college football season will have a guest picker with ties to the home team, and the crew has been to Ohio Stadium so much, you’d think that the ideas are running dry.

Not so.

ESPN announced the guest picker for this Saturday, and it will be a guy who is still of college age and could have easily been slinging the rock around for Ohio State this season. Instead, he’s doing some pretty solid work as the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans. That’s right, the celebrity guest picker that’s going to be waiving the scarlet and gray flag on the set is none other than former Heisman finalist, C.J. Stroud.

This is some pretty fantastic news and something that I’m not sure we saw coming. Either way, you can bet Ryan Day will embrace having Stroud on campus and so will OSU fans and ESPN.

The gap between the top four and the rest is rather large but that’s not an insult all three players on the below list are potential first-round picks or All-Americans.
