The Sooners can play a little D, too.

They might not be able to clamp down like Texas Tech does, but the problems over a brutal second half of the season are more on the offensive side.

They’re not going to have any issues with keeping this game low scoring and about maximizing possessions.

Oklahoma can hit free throws, too. It’s great at slowing down the three, it’s second in the Big 12 in shooting percentage, and when it scores, it usually comes off the extra pass.

Texas Tech is way too strong defensively.

Oklahoma wants to play that game, but the other side does it better. However, the Red Raiders are just 2-4 in true road games and 15-0 at home. The defense travels, but it wasn’t able to come up big enough in winnable games against Iowa State and Kansas State.

But Oklahoma is 1-7 in its last eight games. Texas Tech isn’t the team you want to face when on a slide.

The Sooners might the having a whole slew of problems, but they can shoot.

They’re the best in the Big 12 from the field and among the best in the nation in field goal percentage, working for the right shot, being patient, and doing a great job of finding the open man.

This isn’t a high-octane offense that doesn’t do enough from the outside, but the defense clamps down well from the outside, it doesn’t allow games to get out to hand, and it should be able to grind this down to a stop.

Why Auburn Will Win

Auburn is phenomenal in the defensive interior. It blocks way too many shots for Oklahoma to get anything easy inside.

No one seems able to do enough from three against the Tiger D, and Oklahoma won’t come out and hit a ton from the outside.

The Tigers will have to get used to the Oklahoma style a bit, but if they’re able to go on an early run and rev up the game a bit, this should be over. Considering the turnover problem the Sooner offense has, Auburn should be off to the races.

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma might not be winning, but there are a few reasons.

Baylor, Texas, Kansas, and Baylor again.

It couldn’t get by against the TCU defense, and the style of play keeps both teams in the game, but it should be able to slow down and frustrate Auburn just enough to make this interesting.

However, Auburn can play a little D, too. Oklahoma won’t do enough on the offensive boards or on the inside to pull this off.

– At least as things projected out in mid-November, this could’ve been a College Football Playoff matchup. Even though a few key losses prevented that from happening, this had the potential to be one of the better bowl matchups between two top ten caliber teams.

Oregon will utilize Bryan McClendon before new head man Dan Lanning takes over whenever Georgia’s season is done – he’s currently the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator.

– The time off should do Oregon a whole lot of good. That was a beaten and banged up team in the Pac-12 Championship loss to Utah. It’ll be able to run the ball, the defense – even with star pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux off to the NFL – has plenty of talent around, and the team should look and play fresher than it was at the end of the year.

Two of the biggest college football head coaching questions were answered, but that just opens up more big jobs.

Forget Fight On at USC. It’s Game On with Lincoln Riley now about to be the highest-profile – and by a mile, the highest paid – head football coach in the city of Los Angeles.

The fan base wanted an A-lister of A-lister, and it just got it.

Here’s the guy who’s about to bring the high-octane offense, the resumé with four Big 12 championships in five seasons, four top six finishes, two Heisman Trophy winners and a finalist in Jalen Hurts, and three College Football Playoff appearances.

Now USC is a thing again. Not just because it’s USC, and not just because it’s supposed to be a Power Five conference. Now this ups the game in a huge way for recruiting, the overall profile of the football program, the conference, and what the Pac-12 is about to be.

It also says one very important thing – the prime SEC jobs aren’t quite what everyone thinks they are.

Of course the LSU job is huge, and of course the pressure is going to be National Title or Bust at USC, but the expectations are at a whole other level of insane in the SEC – you can never, ever, ever lose.

Who wants to beat their head against the SEC West wall when you can live life in the Pac-12 South?

Billy Napier wants to give it a try in the SEC East.

The Louisiana head coach was on every Next Coach Up list as the rising offensive coordinator coaching star at Arizona State before the head coaching job went to Herm Edwards.

Napier needed a head coaching job first, he guided Louisiana into a steadily-winning power in the Sun Belt with a national profile, and it became a question of just how big the jump up would be.

But now he has to win right away.

There’s not going to be any sort of a grace period at Florida.

Maybe a 9-3ish season is okay in Year One as long as the team looks like it’s about to be built up into a super-power again, but then it’s SEC Championship or Bust.

Dan Mullen got the team to the SEC title game. Jim McElwain got Florida there a few times. Napier now goes from battling with Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina for the Sun Belt title to needing to beat Georgia. Now.

Louisiana is a solid job at a program that’s a great stepping-stone gig. It’s going to attract a high-profile riser like Napier was. And now the Oklahoma gig is an A-list job opening, too.

It’s Oklahoma. It’s going to be in the SEC. It’s now as big of an opening – if not even stronger – than anything else that’s currently available.

It’ll have its pick of top coaches who’ll want to step into a turn-key situation and keep it all going.

But for now, Florida and USC have two of the best and hottest coaches in the game at two of the best and hottest programs when it comes to powerhouse potential.

No kidding around here.

These are the big games we’ve all been waiting for. This is the weekend that sets us up for Championship Week, and it’s when the biggest of the big rivalry games kick in.

No, I’m not touching the SEC showdowns – there’s too much happening with all of them. I will admit to liking Georgia Tech +35 over Georgia, but that’s too dangerous.

I will also admit to digging Auburn getting 20.5 at home against an Alabama team that has a bad habit of taking long naps, but again, that’s too volatile.

As I warned with the 5 Best Predictions piece for Friday, this is the toughest weekend of the year because it’s impossible to factor in the role desperation plays, especially when teams have no (bleeps) to give.

How long will coaches keep in their star players when the championship game next week means everything? How will players play and coaches coach when they know that this could be the last game of the season?

Flaky things happen on the last normal weekend of the regular season – like USF vs UCF yesterday, and don’t start on Nebraska and Iowa – so the idea here is to go mostly go with big games were both teams have something equally massive to lose

The doesn’t-matter theory worked on Friday taking Colorado -23.5 against Utah.

Ute head coach Kyle Whittingham inexplicably kept too many star players in for too long, but however it worked, it worked.

Utah didn’t need the win. It was already off to the Pac-12 Championship, the game had no playoff or bowl implications, and if anything, the last thing the team needed was to get banged up in any way.

Also, it wasn’t going to bring the high-end intensity and wasn’t going to open up the playbook considering the game that matters is a few days away.

It’s the exact same deal with Pitt and Syracuse, only better for the underdog. Utah was playing at home on Senior Day. Pitt is on the road.

The Panthers don’t need to do anything with this game. They’re off to the ACC Championship, and playing all of their backups and losing by 50 wouldn’t change a thing.

Of course, that’s not how football coaches think – they’re all about momentum, and players play, and blah blah blah. However, there will come a point when the Pitt coaching staff realizes it really doesn’t want QB Kenny Pickett getting blasted.

Even if everything was normal, Syracuse – even though the production has fallen off the map over the last few weeks – would be a good play, Throw in that it’s 5-6 and needs to win this to go bowling, and Pitt doesn’t need this at all, and it’s Senior Day, and the Orange running game is still good, and …

This isn’t a bad straight up play, much less with the 13.

The Oklahoma defense has shown up.

It was expected to be as good a D as any in the Lincoln Riley era, but the secondary got torched way too easily in the middle of the season, there were too many lapses, and the run defense went bye-bye in the loss to Oklahoma State.

The glitch was fixed as the Sooners swarmed all over Breece Hall and Iowa State in last week’s win, it held down Texas Tech enough to get the victory, and now it gets an Oklahoma State team that would prefer to make this all about the D.

The offensive side still works, too. After stalling out against Baylor, Caleb Williams and company got the running game going against Iowa State – the team has hit 200 rushing yards or more in four of their last six games.

Yeah, the Oklahoma State defense is amazing, but it also hasn’t seen a team with any explosion like OU will bring.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense has shown up.

This year’s it’s been all about the defense, the defense, the defense, but the Cowboy attack has kicked it all in at just the right time with 400 yards or more in three of the last four games with 682 against TCU and 535 against Kansas.

The rushing attack has a slew of options, the passing game is steadily hitting 200 yards, and it’s all working in concert with a defense that’s been every bit as good as Georgia’s and Wisconsin’s.

The D pitched a perfect game against Texas Tech – allowing just 108 yards of offense in the 23-0 win – it’s No. 1 in the nation in third down stops, No. 1 in sacks and tackles for loss, No. 2 in scoring, and No. 3 in total defense.

It’s Round One … maybe.

Oklahoma State is in the Big 12 Championship no matter what, and Oklahoma is in with a win. It’s also in with a win and a Baylor loss to Texas Tech – it’ll know what it needs to do with Baylor playing early in the day.

The Cowboy defense will give up two huge plays scoring plays – Williams won’t be that bad – but it won’t be enough.

The Sooner running game will be bottled up, the Oklahoma State offense will be balanced, and about two weeks behind reality, the world will start to realize that the Big 12 really might get a team into the College Football Playoff.

Well that went well.

If it’s possible to pitch a perfect first half, Ohio State did it.

CJ Stroud is now the leader in the Heisman race, the NFL receiving corps played like its should leave right now and step on a field on Sunday, and even the defense was able to dominate.

There was no big day from Michigan State RB Kenneth Walker – six carries for 25 yards.

There was no picking apart of the Ohio State secondary – it allowed 158 yards and a late score.

It was as good a day as the Buckeyes could’ve asked for going into the Michigan game, and it all started with an offensive line that gave Stroud 19 days to throw.

He wasn’t bad early on, but now he looks comfortable, his decision-making is faster, and it sure helps when you have those guys running free and easy.

And it doesn’t hurt to play the nation’s worst pass defense.

It doesn’t matter if you’re throwing against air – 32-of-35 for 432 yards and six touchdowns with no picks is pretty good.

It was the perfect performance that should push the Buckeyes up in the College Football Playoff rankings, even though that doesn’t matter too much. Beat Michigan, win the Big Ten Championship, and get in.

It’s not going to be nearly as easy as it looked against the beleaguered Spartan D, but it’s there. The offense looked like it’s ready to not just get back to the mini-tournament, but do some damage.

For all of the talk about not playing anyone who was any good before going to Baylor, everything is still on the table.

Beat Iowa State, beat Oklahoma State, beat – most likely – Oklahoma State again in the Big 12 Championship, be 12-1 as a Power Five champion, get into the College Football Playoff … maybe.

Taking down the Cyclones on the road would be a strong first step into respectability, and it starts by getting the running game going again.

Baylor bottled up Caleb Williams, the line didn’t generate a push, and it’s been two games in a row without hitting 100 yards on the ground.

The O rolled for 525 yards or more in three of the four games before last week. Now it gets a Cyclone defense that got rocked by Texas Tech for over 500 yards, allowed close to 500 yards against West Virginia, and suddenly it looked beatable.

Why Iowa State Will Win

Iowa State might have bowed out of the Big 12 title race with last week’s loss to Texas Tech, but it should be able to do a whole lot of the same things Baylor was able to do to Oklahoma last week.

Breece Hall and the Cyclone running game stalled in the loss to the Red Raiders, but he’s still a Doak Walker Award-level back, the ground attack is still great, and OU just gave up almost 300 yards to the Baylor running game.

Yeah, the defense has had problems stopping teams from throwing over the second half of the season, but the run D remains a rock and the pass defense is the second-best in the Big 12.

This is a veteran team that’s not going to beat itself on the road. It doesn’t have turnover problems, the lines are terrific, and there aren’t a slew of penalties.

What’s Going To Happen

Caleb Williams and the passing game will bounce back fast.

Williams might be a bit banged up, but he’s still the playmaker who hit over 75% of his passes over the three games as a starter before Baylor, he ripped Texas Tech off over 400 yards and six touchdowns in a near-perfect game, and he’s going to get some help.

It’s the home finale before going up the road a few miles to deal with Oklahoma State. The Sooners are going to do what they do – they’ll be too sleepy for about 20 minutes – but the lines are about to come up with a big day and the run defense will show up after last week’s embarrassment.
