Why West Virginia Will Win

Rebounds. West Virginia can go get them, and Oklahoma can’t.

The Mountaineers are decent from the field, and they can’t shoot from the outside, but they dominate on the offensive boards and clean up a whole lot of messes. On the flip side, the Sooners are okay on the boards, but they’re dead last in the Big 12 in offensive rebounds.

For a team that struggles to score at times – it hasn’t hit 70 points in six of its last eight games – OU will have a whole slew of problems against this WVU D that doesn’t quit.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Oklahoma Will Win

If you believe in patterns, this is Sooners’ game.

They’ve followed up a loss with a win over the last seven games, and they’re due for a win again, partly because they’re at home. They’ve lost their last four games on the road, and won seven of the last eight at home – only losing to Kansas.

On the flip side, the Mountaineers have lost three of their last four road games. If the OU defense can hold its own on the defensive boards, and the offense can get up early and make WVU need to hit from the outside, it’ll keep the game at its tempo.

What’s Going To Happen

Being at home will mean everything for the Sooners.

This will be a low-scoring fight with just the right formula for OU to pull this off. West Virginia can’t hit free throws, but it leads the Big 12 in free throws made because it’s always on the line. Oklahoma is second in the nation in fewest personal fouls.

The Sooners will win on the line in the clutch.

Oklahoma (10-1) vs. Oklahoma State (6-3) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Oklahoma Will Win

This team has another gear when it’s time to turn it on.

It might not be all that consistently great lately, but thanks to Jalen Hurts, the offense is getting just enough to keep coming up with wins.

How brilliant has he been?

He’s not going to throw for the yards and touchdowns that Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield did during their respective Heisman-winning seasons, but he’s been more efficient than those two. Throw in the 1,156 yards and 17 scores, and he’s carrying a team that’s been in fight after fight after fight.

The Oklahoma State secondary hasn’t been all that miserable considering the years it’s been allowing – it had three straight games of three picks before not coming up with one against West Virginia – but it can be hit for the big plays when the receivers are on the move. That’s what Oklahoma does.

Sam Ehlinger, Brock Purdy, Charlie Brewer – they were able to blast away, and now it’ll be Hurts’ turn at bat.

Oklahoma’s offense leads the nation averaging 575 yards per game, and Oklahoma State doesn’t have its starting quarterback. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Dru Brown was good enough.

With Spencer Sanders out for the year, former Hawaii transfer Dru Brown stepped into the starting quarterback gig and hit 76% of his throws for almost 200 yards with two touchdowns. He might not have provided the rushing element that Sanders does, but that’s what Chuba Hubbard is for.

The nation’s leading rusher has been slowed down a wee bit – he was held without a touchdown run for the first time all year in last week’s win over West Virginia – but he still produced a 100-yard game when the Mountaineers forced Brown to try winning the game.

The key will be the other side of the ball, where Oklahoma State’s run defense has all of sudden become a force.

The stats are skewed because teams bomb away on the Cowboy secondary, but after a rough first part of the year with Baylor, Texas, and Oregon State able to rip off rushing yards in chunks, OSU’s D has held three of the last four teams to under 90 yards on the ground.

When teams are trying to run now, it’s not working. The Cowboys should do just enough to keep Hurts from going off when he gets an opening.

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma has won four straight and five of the last six in the Bedlam fun, but once in a while, Oklahoma State is able to screw things up.

It might seem like a million years ago now, but a bad 2001 OSU team handed  the 10-1 Sooners a shocking 16-13 loss. The year after when 10-1 OU needed the win to stay in the national title hunt, it lost in Stillwater 38-28, and …

Really? 2001? Most of the players in this year’s game were barely born then.

The 2011 powerhouse Cowboy team destroyed the Sooners, and Tyreek Hill broke Sooner hearts with a punt return for a score in the final moments of a 38-35 win in 2014, and …

In a long-winded way, let’s just say Oklahoma State, as a program, is due.

Oklahoma has been playing with fire way too often.

It’s been able to survive three straight close games – beating Iowa State, Baylor and TCU by a combined eight points – but the turnover problem will be a killer in Stillwater.

The Sooners are -10 in turnover margin over the last seven games, they’ll be a -2 in this one, and that will be just enough of a difference in a back-and-forth fight that comes down to one final drive that comes up just short.

(It’s been the call for almost ten months, and there’s no backing off now … ) Oklahoma State will ruin Oklahoma’s College Football Playoff dream.

Oklahoma (9-1) vs. TCU (5-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why TCU Will Win

There’s walking a high-wire, and there’s what Oklahoma is doing lately.

It lost to Kansas State after falling just short on a final drive, it almost collapsed against Iowa State in the second half of a 42-41 win – needing a tipped two-point conversion to survive – and overcame a 28-3 deficit on the road against Baylor to pull of the outstanding victory.

This Sooner team is fantastic, but it’s also struggling against the better teams on the slate.

TCU is just flaky enough to do this.

Unlike the Sooners in close games, the Horned Frogs have had a slew of issues – they were on a run of four losses in five games before beating Texas Tech last week.

The offense is still deliberate enough to dominate the time of possession battle, the secondary continues to be among the best in the Big 12 – for whatever that’s worth – and the makeup is there to explode for the big plays needed to keep up in a shootout.

It’s a better team than it’s 5-5 record.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Jalen Hurts might just be the best player in college football.

It’s going to take something otherworldly to get past Joe Burrow and win the Heisman, but on the year he’s hitting 73% of his passes for 3,039 yards and 28 touchdowns with five picks, and he’s about to go over the 1,000-yard rushing mark to go along with his 15 scores.

There have been a few bad turnovers lately, but he’s been able to keep taking shots, keep making plays, and he’s leading the way to wins even when everything else seems to be breaking down.

Yeah, TCU is good, but can QB Max Duggan be more accurate and consistent? He was brilliant against Texas Tech, but he threw three interceptions in the losses to Oklahoma State and Baylor the weeks before.

Can the Horned Frog secondary hold up against what’s coming?

It’s allowed two touchdown passes or more in each of the last six games, and it’s been bombed on for ten yards or more per pass in three of the last seven games. It’s been getting hit hard against the teams that can throw, and Hurts is averaging over 12 yards per attempt.

However …

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

Is CeeDee Lamb able to go? Hurt against Baylor, the Sooner star receiver is questionable. The OU passing game is more than good enough to keep on rolling, but the attack isn’t the same if the No. 1 guy isn’t hitting home runs.

It’ll be yet another battle for Oklahoma. The defense is starting to sputter a bit – it’s fallen off over the last three weeks – and get ready for the Horned Frogs to go through stretches when its defense stalls the Sooner attack.

But once again, Oklahoma football will be fantastic theater.

It’ll be another uneven game, there will be moments when it looks like TCU has the thing won, and it’ll be another game when Jalen Hurts goes Jalen Hurts.

The Sooners will cement a spot in their third straight Big 12 Championship appearance.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

No, really. Have you seen what Jalen Hurts is doing?

America might have handed Joe Burrow the Heisman already, but with the national spotlight back on the Sooners, don’t be so fast to count out No. 1 once he gets a chance to reintroduce himself to the college football public.

Shhhhhhhhh, but he’s been better than Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield.

He’s hitting 73% of his passes with 24 touchdowns and four picks, and he’s already up to a seemingly effortless 869 rushing yards and 15 scores. In full control of the attack, he’s about to hit a Baylor defense that’s been great, but struggled against the Texas Tech quick-hitting offense and hasn’t needed to get into too many firefights.

The Sooners might be a bit inconsistent lately, but when they’ve been on, they can turn the lights out in a flash. It helps that the O isn’t screwing things up along the way.

Baylor hasn’t been living on turnover margin, but it’s been a massive plus. The Oklahoma offensive style should negate the fantastic Bear pass rush, and Hurts isn’t going to make enough massive mistakes to matter – the Sooners have only lost the ball ten times so far. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Baylor Will Win

You’re dead against the Sooners if you can’t at least make Hurts move around a bit, and Baylor has the ability to get behind the line and not let him get too comfortable.

Of course Hurts is deadly when he’s in the open field or getting to improvise, but he doesn’t get enough credit for being able to simply go through his progressions and make the solid throw to spring the big play. Baylor can take that away.

There’s also the issue of a defense that’s starting to creep back into its old, ugly self.

For two games in a row, the Sooners were lit up by a solid Big 12 quarterback. Kansas State’s Skylar Thompson threw or over 200 yards and ran for four touchdowns in the win. Last week, it was Iowa State’s Brock Purdy who went off for five touchdown passes, a rushing score, and came within a two-point conversion of pulling off the massive comeback win.

This is Charlie Brewer’s moment.

Steady, he threw three picks against Texas Tech, one interception last week, and that’s been it for the turnovers. He’s cool under fire, can run enough to be a problem, and he’s got the weapons around him to let others do the work.

This might not be an explosive offense like Oklahoma has, but it’s been able to answer the call in tight battle after tight battle.

Oh, and by the way – looking at you, College Football Playoff committee – Baylor actually beat Kansas State. Oklahoma didn’t.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t be totally stunned if we’re about to see Minnesota-Penn State II here.

Baylor doesn’t have a chance … it hasn’t beaten anyone … it doesn’t have the weapons and talent Oklahoma has …

All the talking points were used last week against the Gophers.

Oklahoma has only beaten two teams certain to go bowling – Texas and Iowa State – and both were massive battles. It lost to the other team on the slate that’s a lock for a swag bag game.

Baylor won’t have quite enough to pull this one out, but it’ll get a huge day out of Brewer and an offense that will slow it down just enough to keep Hurts on the sidelines. But Hurts will be the star of the show as he has enough highlight moments to cement him in the No. 2 spot in the Heisman chase.
