Ohio vs Akron Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

The Zips are playing better.

The coaching under Joe Moorhead has been stronger than it’s been in years, and it’s showing as the passing game is steady and the team is far more competitive. It’s not winning, but it’s hanging around.

Ohio’s defense is the worst in America allowing 577 yards per game. Everyone has moved the ball at will on the Bobcats, and Akron should be able to hang around for a while, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Ohio Will Win

The Ohio offense is bombing away. That’s partly because the defense is giving up way too many yards and the other side has to keep up, but QB Kurtis Rourke has been terrific.

The Bobcats lead the MAC in passing yards, but they’re not going to need to go off in this – the Akron offense won’t do enough.

The Zips are awful on third downs, they’re hurting themselves with penalties, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Akron is having too many problems scoring.

It’ll crank up the passing yards with at least 250, and there will be moments in the first quarter when it looks like something amazing might happen.

Ohio will settle in, the offense will be balanced, and it’ll have its first relatively easy win of the year.

Ohio vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

Will the Ohio offense show up?

It was great against Florida Atlantic and Fordham, bad against Penn State and Iowa State, and it has the passing game to bother a Kent State defense that’s far better this season, but not amazing.

The Bobcats need to QB Kurtis Rourke to stay in a groove. He bombed away for 537 yards against Fordham, is averaging close to 300 yards per game, he’s able to hit the big plays down the field.

The attack is there to keep up, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Kent State Will Win

The Ohio defense is getting picked clean.

Again, playing Penn State and Iowa State was a problem, but Fordham was able to complete 77% of its passes for over 500 yards and six touchdowns in the 59-52 Bobcat win.

And now the Kent State offense gets to eat.

No, it hasn’t taken off yet, but there are three key reasons: at Washington, at Oklahoma, and at Georgia.

On the plus side, the defense was able to hold up relatively well – at least for the Kent State D. The parts are there to finally get this going, especially with the ground attack.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Apparently, Kent State is so good that America is starting to question whether or not Georgia can play college football anymore.

The Golden Flashes lost 39-22 – it wasn’t as close as the final score, even though Georgia never pulled away until late – but again, now the offense will show up in what should be a fun and wild shootout.

Ohio vs Fordham Game Preview

Why Fordham Will Win

The Rams have started strong.

The defense has been a tad lacking, but the offense has more than made up for it with the best passing game in the FCS. It’s averaging 320 yards per game, Tim DeMorat has thrown 16 touchdowns in three games, and the veteran receivers are all getting a taste.

Let’s just say the Ohio defense is having problems against the pass.

Florida Atlantic, Penn State, and Iowa State all went for 300 yards against the third-worst pass defense in college football.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Ohio Will Win

Yeah, Ohio gives up 334 passing yards per game. Fordham gives up 320.

The Rams are winning because they can crank out an FCS best 620 yards of total O a game, but Ohio has the ability to move the ball, too.

No, it couldn’t get going on the road against Penn State or Iowa State, but it rolled against Florida Atlantic.

And no, Ohio’s defense – as mediocre as it is – isn’t Wagner, Monmouth, or Albany.

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

This should be a fun firefight.

Fordham will keep on firing, but it’ll give up yards and points just as fast.

The Bobcats will be able to do just a bit more offensively, the running game will work this week, and the defense will come up with the second half stops the the Rams won’t.

Iowa State vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

Can the Week 1 Bobcats return?

The offense rolled against a decent Florida Atlantic team, and then it ran into a Penn State brick wall in a 46-10 loss last week. The defense is having a few issues, but QB Kurtis Rourke is a solid veteran who isn’t making mistakes, the running game is okay, and the pass rush has been terrific.

Can Iowa State play a mistake free game? Ohio isn’t turning the ball over, Iowa State has given it up four times in the first two games, and the ability is there from the MAC team to pull off something funky if the full focus isn’t there on the other side.

From the win over Iowa, to the Big 12 showdown against Baylor up next, to the rumors about whether or not head coach Matt Campbell might be courted by Nebraska, there’s a lot going on with the Cyclones.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Iowa State passing game is about to eat.

The offense survived the weirdness of Iowa with a 10-7 win against that defense on the road in lousy weather, but QB Hunter Dekkers was good in the opener against SE Missouri State, there’s talent among the skill spots, and it should all work against the Bobcat secondary.

Ohio has done a lot of things right over the first two weeks, but Florida Atlantic’s N’Kosi Perry and Penn State’s Sean Clifford went off – Ohio has allowed over 700 passing yards and eight touchdowns so far.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State isn’t necessarily built to roll offensively, but it shouldn’t have a problem moving the ball, and the run defense should keep the Ohio ground attack from taking control.

Ohio is a sound team with enough talent to make this interesting for a while, but Iowa State will rise up and roll after halftime. The attack will be great on third downs as it controls the tempo of the game throughout.

Penn State vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

That was more like it.

After struggling in a strange 2021, Ohio came out roaring with a strong 41-38 win over Florida Atlantic. There weren’t any turnovers, the offense cranked up the passing game, and the defense was able to weather the storm.

QB Kurtis Rourke is a dangerous all-around playmaker who can hit the big play, run around a bit, and potentially pick apart a Penn State secondary that had plenty of issues with the Purdue passing game in a thrilling 35-31 win.

The defense that did a great job of getting behind the line against FAU should be able to hold up a bit, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Penn State Will Win

Penn State was able to survive and advance.

The win over Purdue was one of those moments that sets the tone for an entire season.

It was down and in big trouble, and then the offense got the ball back and Sean Clifford went to work with a late drive and his fourth touchdown pass of the game to get the win.

Ohio is a lot better this season, but the secondary is questionable – it got ripped apart by FAU’s N’Kosi Perry. Penn State should be able to throw well and dink and dunk as much as it wants, but …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This is about the ground game for Penn State.

It struggled to get anything consistently going against Purdue and there weren’t any big, gashing dashes. Ohio didn’t allow much of anything against the FAU running game, but in this, Penn State has to let the O line eat.

When that doesn’t happen, Clifford will go back to work. This will be more dangerous than Penn State might like for a little while, but it’ll pull away in the second half.

Florida Atlantic vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Owls were dominant in their opener against Charlotte.

The offense couldn’t be stopped in any way, the defense was a wall against the run, and it was the perfect was to kick things off. N’Kosi Perry hit 16-of-22 passes for 256 yards, Larry McCammon ran wild on his 14 carries, and the team was in total control.

Ohio has to prove it can hold up.

The Bobcat passing game struggled last season, the defense has to show it can get into the backfield on a regular basis, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Ohio Will Win

The Ohio running game is going to be solid.

For all of the problems the Bobcats had last season, the running game was okay, the line should be a plus, and there’s too much talent across the board to be so mediocre.

Florida Atlantic was able to dominate the lines against Charlotte, but that’s not going to happen here.

The running game should also have a more difficult time with an Ohio linebacking corps that will be among the best in the MAC. Don’t expect close to 500 yards of total offense from the Owls this week.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Can Florida Atlantic keep the Ohio offensive scoring woes going?

It was a strange 2021 for the Bobcats. The team wasn’t that bad, but scoring was a big, big issue. The team was 3-0 when it hit 30 points, and 0-9 when it it didn’t.

Ohio is 7-1 as a program in its last eight games when getting to 30, and 2-13 over the last three seasons when it doesn’t.

The Florida Atlantic defense – while not perfect – isn’t going to give up 30 points.

Ohio Bobcats Preview 2022

Well that’s not how it’s supposed to work.

Ohio was the model of consistency under Frank Solich – 2008 was the last losing season – with bowl games and fights for the MAC Championship part of the norm. There might not have been conference titles, but the program was always on the preseason short list of contenders.

Solich retired, and the team looked and played directionless in a 3-9 season – the worst campaign since 2003.

But head coach and everyone was able to take a deep breath, there were some good parts in an otherwise ugly season, and with four of the losses by a touchdown or less, there might not be as much work to do as it seems, starting with …

Ohio Bobcats Preview 2022: Offense

The offense wasn’t miserable. It ran well, but the passing attack struggled, it wasn’t efficient, and the 22.6 points per game weren’t going to get it done. But with a decent offensive line and a slew of good skill parts back, this could bounce back fast, starting with …

The running game should be even stronger. O’Shaan Allison is a good veteran back, but leading rusher De’Montre Tuggle is done. The attack that averaged over five yards per game should hit the mark again, but more parts are needed to help out Allison.

The offensive line should do the job. The pass protection was great, and with three starters back this group will be a plus as soon as the left side is settled.

Kurtis Rourke continues the tradition of Rourke owning the quarterback gig. Nathan Rourke had the job from 2017 to 2019, and Kurtis has been the guy for the last two years going into his third. He’s a decent enough passer – he’s accurate – and is used to getting out on the move as a key part of the running game. UCF’s Parker Navarro is coming in to push for time.

Isiah Cox left for Alabama A&M, and leading receiver Cameron Odom is done, but Tyler Walton led the team with 32 catches and on the way is August Pitre from Rice to add more downfield pop.

Ohio Bobcats Preview 2022: Defense

The defense needs more work than the offense, but the defense has more veteran parts back and should be a tad more settled. There weren’t any takeaways, the run defense wasn’t great, and the pass rush was nothing more than an interesting rumor. After allowing 431 yards and 30 points per game,

The linebackers are the stars. There might have been issues with the Bobcat defense, but Bryce Houston led the team with 104 tackles and Cannon Blauser at everything up inside with 86 stops. They should be among the best 1-2 linebacking punches in the MAC.

The secondary has a young playmaker in corner Roman Parodie, and Taiq Drake led the team with three interceptions to go along with 49 tackles from his strong safety spot. Alvin Floyd is a keeper, too, who’ll freelance a bit. However, the depth at safety is a problem.

A whole lot more has to come from the pass rush. There wasn’t a ton of production with just 17 sacks, and top sacker Will Evans is done on the line. The bulk is missing, but Kylen McCracken is a veteran on the nose and Purdue’s Dontay Hunter is on the way to help. Now the stops have to be there against the run.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Lew Nichols, Soph. Central Michigan

Coming off a strong 2020 averaging close to seven yards per carry with over 500 rushing yards, he was all but unstoppable in 2021.

The 5-10, 220-pounder led the nation with 1,848 rushing yards and over 142 per game with 16 rushing scores and two receiving touchdowns. Steady, he came up with over 130 yards in each of the last eight games, and once again he’s going to be the featured star of the attack.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Jamal Hines, Sr. Toledo

The three-time All-MAC defender – First Team last season – is a true hybrid who can do a little of everything right. He’s an outside linebacker, but he’s really an edge rushing defensive end who’ll live behind the line for stretches.

The 6-3, 250-pounder made 88 tackles with ten sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and broke up eight passes. With all his experience and all his skill, he’s about to be an all-star gamewrecker again.
