UAB (1-1) vs North Texas (1-1) Game Preview

Why UAB Will Win

Don’t take anything away from the 56-7 loss to Georgia. UAB is really, really good. It’s not national championship good.

This is still one of the most experienced Group of Five teams with the talent to take another Conference USA title. Now it gets to play someone more its own size, and it should be able to move the ball at will on a North Texas defense that’s been awful against the run and gives up 477 yards per game overall.

The Mean Green have firepower, and the D is a wee bit improved after last year’s disaster, but it’s all still going to be a work in progress.

UAB will be able to rumble at will on the ground. However …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why North Texas Will Win

UAB wasn’t great at converting on third downs against Jacksonville State.

Going 1-of-11 against Georgia is one thing, but the offense sputtered to keep things moving against the Gamecocks, converting just 3-of-9 tries for an offense that hasn’t been as sharp as it should be.

North Texas might not have the defense, but former North Carolina QB Jace Ruder threw for 366 yards against SMU with a whole lot of big plays down the field. At home, the Mean Green should come up with the offensive pop to set the pace – UAB still has to prove it can keep up.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UAB will keep up.

Give credit for a 31-0 win over the same Jacksonville State team that won at Florida State, and again, losing to Georgia is losing at Georgia.

North Texas will come up with a whole lot of yards, but it’ll have problems putting the biscuit in the basket. It only came up with 12 points against SMU despite rolling up over 500 yards.

Once again, turnovers will be a problem for the Mean Green.

SMU (1-0) vs North Texas (1-0) Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

The North Texas running game ripped through Northwestern State without a problem in a 44-14 win.

The defense is still the North Texas defense – more on that in a moment – but DeAndre Torrey ran for 244 yards and three scores, the offensive line got the job done, and it was a good all-around tune-up.

The passing attack will come around. North Carolina transfer Jace Ruder struggled, but he can move, the receivers are there, and the O is in place to keep up the pace. However …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why SMU Will Win

Again, the North Texas defense is still the North Texas defense.

A disaster last year, it couldn’t handle the Northwestern State ground attack allowing 261 yards and over five yards per carry. SMU got its warm-up game in a 56-9 victory over Abilene Christian, getting seven touchdown passes out of Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai. This week is about Ulysses Bentley and a ground game that’s about to eat.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Expect a whole lot of big plays and a whole lot of fireworks – with more coming from the SMU side.

North Texas has worked hard this offseason to improve the D, but it’s not there yet. The O will do what it can do keep up, but SMU will get the balance and production put keep the numbers rolling.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

North Texas (0-0) vs Northwestern State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Northwestern State Will Win

It was a tough 2021 spring FCS run for the Demons, going 1-5 without a lick of luck. However, they beat a ranked Incarnate Word team, and the five losses were all in close fights including a 24-16 defeat to eventual national champion Sam Houston State.

There’s a little work to be done with the passing game, but Scooter Adams and the ground attack should have a whole lot of fun against a North Texas defense that’s starting over.

The Mean Green gave up a college football-high 522 yards and 43 points per game. The run defense was non-existent, but …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why North Texas Will Win

At least there’s a whole lot of experience in place for the Mean Green to be a whole lot better, and it’s all helped by new defensive coordinator Phil Bennett.

It’s the offensive side that should be the difference-maker. The D will give up points and yards, but the O will get them back and then some against the Demon defense. The Mean Green led Conference USA in rushing, passing, and it’s all about to keep on going.

The Northwestern State defense allowed 473 yards per game, and it’ll give up at least that many to the Mean Green attack.

Week 1 College Football Schedule

What’s Going To Happen

It’s all about how much the North Texas defense has improved.

Everyone but Rice went off on the Mean Green, but if the D is anything but totally miserable, the offense will take care of the rest this season.

The points and yards will come in bunches from both sides, but North Texas will bomb away throughout with unstoppable balance.

2021 CFN Conference USA Preseason Rankings: East

1. Marshall Thundering Herd

Quick Take: It’s one of the most interesting Group of Five teams coming into the 2021 season – it’s Conference USA title or bust. New head man Charles Huff has to pull the Herd offense out of the nosedive that screwed up 2020, and he’s got the parts in place to do it – especially for the passing game. If the D isn’t the best in the conference, it’s second.
Marshall Preview | Schedule

2. WKU Hilltoppers

Quick Take: The Hilltoppers will be deep in the hunt for the Conference USA title – at the very least, they’ll be among the top three teams. The pass rush will be a killer, but the real fun comes with an upgraded passing game. WKU took the parts from a big-time Houston Baptist air show to revamp the O.
WKU Preview | Schedule

3. Florida Atlantic Owls

Quick Take: Willie Taggart should have his Owls in the mix for the Conference USA title. The lines are among the best in the league, the special teams should be great, and if the quarterback play is fine, everything is there to come up with a big season.
FAU Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532444]

4. FIU Golden Panthers

Quick Take: After an ugly 2020, Butch Davis should have a whole lot more success in 2021. It starts with one of the league’s most talented secondaries, a good kicking game, and a promising ground game that should take more control of games.
FIU Preview | Schedule

5. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

Quick Take: The Blue Raiders will be in for a weird season. The team isn’t all that great, but it should push for a bowl game with a whole lot of winnable games built into the slate. The secondary is good thanks to the best group of safeties in the league, but can the offense keep up the pace?
MTSU Preview | Schedule

6. Charlotte 49ers

Quick Take: The 49ers should have a decent passing game, but can the defense hold up? There’s experience, and the coaching is solid, but the schedule doesn’t have a lot of breaks – the 49ers miss most of the easier teams from the West.
Charlotte Preview | Schedule

7. Old Dominion Monarchs

Quick Take: Welcome back, ODU football. After taking last year off, and with head coach Ricky Rahne having to wait a season to get his era going, this is Conference USA’s biggest wild-card team. What’s going to work right away? The offense should get going early on.

2021 Preseason CFN Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year

QB Carson Strong, Jr. Nevada

It’s going to be a huge year for Mountain West quarterbacks. Boise State’s Hank Bachmeier is going to be special if he can stay healthy, Fresno State’s Jake Heaner will put up massive numbers, San Jose State’s Nick Starkel is playing his 14th year of college football, and Kentucky transfer Terry Wilson should jumpstart New Mexico. But Nevada has a guy who’s about to rise up the NFL Draft charts in a hurry.

The 6-4, 215-pound Strong doesn’t run much, but he’s accurate – hitting 70% of his passes last year with just four picks – and he knows how to push the downfield passing game. The Wolf Pack are loaded, and Strong’s about to come up with a giant year.

2021 Preseason CFN Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year

DE Cade Hall, Sr. San Jose State

Take your pick of at least ten Mountain West defensive players who have a case to be here, and it’s hardly even a lock that Hall will be the best defensive end in a conference loaded with terrific pass rushers. Even the guy on the other side of Hall – Viliami Fehoko – might deserve this spot.

But going into the season, the 6-3, 270-pound force should once again be one of the nation’s best pass rushers after coming up with ten sacks and 12 tackles for loss in just seven games. With a loaded defense around him to take the heat off, Hall should dominate.

2021 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

RB Sincere McCormick, Jr.

He’s only 5-9 and 200 pounds, but he’s tough as nails as a workhorse, he can catch the ball enough to be a factor, and he’s got the burst and quickness to crank up big plays. He was second in the nation in rushing with 1,487 yards and 11 scores, coming up with two or more touchdowns four times. He’s once again going to be the focal point and offensive star of a rising team.

2021 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

S Rashad Wisdom, Jr.

The dangerous all-around defender made a big impact in his first season, but he took things to a whole other level as a sophomore. For the second straight season he came up with a pick six – and made four interceptions in all last year – and was one of the top tacklers in the league averaging close to eight stops per game. A great hitter who makes a whole lot of plays in the open field, he’s going to be even more of an intimidating force.

Why North Texas Will Win

The Mean Green was tied for fifth in Conference USA’s regular season, but it went on a four game run in the conference tournament to push its way into the fun.

This is a good shooting team that did what it had to do. It proved it’s tournament tough with the OT win over WKU, and it really is dangerous enough to pull this off.

There’s not a lot of size, and the team kept winning even though the shooting wasn’t great over the last few games of the conference tournament, but the D is solid and aggressive and the O led Conference USA making 48% of its shots.

Purdue turns it over a ton, it doesn’t force a lot of mistakes, and North Texas has the veteran guards for a balanced offense that won’t get rattled.

However …

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why Purdue Will Win

Arkansas, Mississippi State, West Virginia, Loyola. North Texas lost to all four of them, and failed to get to 55 points against everyone but MSU in a 69-63 loss.

Again, there’s not a ton of Mean Green bulk outside of Zachary Simmons, and Purdue is big, tough, and should have no problems owning the boards. Be shocked if the Boilermakers aren’t at least a +10 in rebounding margin.

North Texas doesn’t crank up the O. It can shoot, but it’s a measured team that won’t bomb away from outside. One big Purdue burst might be enough to put this away.

College Basketball Experts Picks For Purdue vs North Texas

What’s Going To Happen

North Texas has just enough of a defense to be a bother, but Purdue should own the inside as it keeps on pounding away for points.

This is hardly a perfect Boilermaker team, but it’s going to have problems – most likely – against teams that can get up and down the floor quickly and can make games a shootout. That’s not North Texas.

North Texas (16-9) vs WKU (20-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why North Texas Will Win

The Mean Green had issues over the end of the regular season – the shooting was there but the defense wasn’t – and then they got on a run at the right time in the Conference USA Tournament. They pulled of a brilliant defensive performance in a 54-48 win over Louisiana Tech, and now they’ve got their shot at the title.

Defense, defense, defense – the football team could’ve only wished to be this strong defensively. The Mean Green are great from three and decent on the boards, but they’re here with that D that allowed more than 70 points just once in the last 12 games.

However …

Why WKU Will Win

WKU can play a little defense, too.

The Hilltoppers stopped UAB in a 64-60 win that – with some due respect to North Texas – might have been for the Conference USA championship.

The Hilltoppers were great at making the key shots in the second half and held firm on the boards in the low-scoring fight. They’re better than North Texas on the boards and have a bit more scoring pop.

It’s a team built to handle a low-scoring game like this should be.

What’s Going To Happen

North Texas doesn’t take a ton of shots, but it’s ultra-efficient offensively to go along with that great defense. There’s one massive problem, though …

Free throws.

WKU is the best team in Conference USA on the line, and North Texas struggles to get there. It’s going to be a battle with the Hilltoppers coming up with at least three more made free throws.
