Why New York Giants Will Win the NFC Divisional Round

This just might work.

Don’t turn the ball over. Rely on the run defense. Assume your running back might just be the best player on the field. Get your defense off the field with a slew of third down stops. Take the attitude that nobody believes in you because very few do.

All the pressure is on the other side of the field, and this is where not being the 1 seed might be a big plus. The Giants know they can win a playoff game.

Last year’s Eagle team was rudely pushed out by Tampa Bay in the Wild Card round, and the 2020 version only won four games. This might be a young team with a whole lot of talent, but there’s a sense of urgency, too, with a slew of key parts about to be very expensive, free agents, or both.

That, and the Eagles were hardly themselves over the finishing kick. Jalen Hurts was banged up, the team lost two of its last three games, and the win over the Giants in Week 18 wasn’t exactly a thing of beauty.

Considering it didn’t play all that well in the win over the miserable Bears, it’s going to be well over a month since Philly was operating at peak efficiency.

Granted, the last great performance was a blowout over the Giants, but this might just be a different and more confident team coming back from Minneapolis.

Win the turnover battle – New York is 7-2 when it doesn’t give it away. Run well – it’s 5-0 when it tears off over 170 rushing yards. Stay in this late, control the clock, and …

5 best predictions for the Divisional Round round of the NFL Playoffs. What appear to be the best bets and picks?

The Wild Card round is the buffet of various carbs and fillers. The Divisional Round has the prime rib and crab legs.

This is it. This is everything to the hardcore NFL types. The Super Bowl … your mom watches the Super Bowl. Championship Sunday is big, but this is the weekend we get the best bulk games. Four of them that all take on a life of their own.

I’ll try to find the five best picks against the spread – and point totals – out of them.

As I mentioned for the Wild Card round, with so few games to choose from, the reasonable goal is to bat .600, and I got that last week going 3-2 thanks to the obvious call of Dallas over Tampa Bay and Jacksonville’s easy-peasy walk in the park win – and the over – against the Chargers (yeeeeeeeeeeeeesh).

I overestimated Buffalo, underestimated San Francisco, and I might just do it again – at least with the latter – starting with …

5. NFL Playoffs: Dallas at San Francisco

LINE San Francisco -4
ATS PICK Dallas

Warning, I’m going to underestimate the guy yet again – it hasn’t been working well for me.

No, the definition of insanity is NOT doing the same thing over and over again and expecting the same result. However, picking against Brock Purdy hasn’t exactly shown sound judgement so far.

The guy has been absolutely magnificent.

If it was, say, Kenny Pickett, or Sam Howell, or even Trey Lance, he’d be hailed as the next big NFL thing. But because he’s Brock Purdy, and because he’s a third-string option, and because he was Mr. Irrelevant – that whole tag and bit annoys me for some reason; does that mean Travon Walker was Mr. Relevant? – it’s hard to fully buy in.

Every NFL quarterback has a clunker at some point, but seriously? 67%, 13 touchdown passes, four picks, unbeaten as a starter in these big games?

This is more about Dallas.

[lawrence-related id=557017]

Going along with the name recognition thing, if this wasn’t Dallas, and if it wasn’t carrying all this baggage and all of these expectation, it might be favored.

The one giant worry I have is time. San Francisco played on Saturday morning, Dallas played on Monday night, and Dallas had to travel. The 49ers are getting close to two days of extra time off. That’s a problem, but I’m going with talent.

Dallas has the combination of offensive firepower and defensive playmaking that the 49ers – and Purdy – haven’t had to deal with yet. I’d like to be getting a little more than four, but I’ll take it.

And I’ll probably pick against Purdy in the NFL Championship, too.

Speaking of digging the underdog on the road …

Why New York Giants Will Win the NFC Wild Card

The Vikings aren’t exactly ripping through the finishing kick here.

Yeah, they were able to gear down over the last month, and yeah, there were a ton of injuries, and yeah, they still won three of their last four and five of their last seven,

They were still struggling, and that included the 27-24 fight with the Giants just a few weeks ago.

New York’s offense was humming. The passing attack ripped through the porous and banged up secondary, the running game rumbled just fine, and everything worked except being +2 in turnover margin.

The Giants – at least when Daniel Jones is healthy – have started to figure out their passing game a bit with a slew of interesting receivers making a little noise. Saquon Barkley has been good, the defense has been okay – and great on third downs – and in general, turnovers aren’t the killer for them like they are for most teams.

On the flip side, the porous Viking defense has to come up with takeaways. The team is 12-1 when coming up with one and 1-3 when it doesn’t. That’s it. That’s the margin for this high-flying team.

The Giants have gone seven games this year without a turnover. That’s fine, but …

Why Philadelphia Eagles Will Win

The offense is getting even stronger.

With 953 yards over the last two weeks – including the shockingly easy win over a great Tennessee D – it’s all clicking.

The ground game rolled through the Packers, the passing attack ripped up the Titans, and the team is playing with all sorts of confidence to go along with the competence.

Once the turnovers slowed, everything was fine. The four giveaways against Washington were a killer, and the two against the Colts made it close. The Eagles haven’t turned it over multiple times in any other game, and the Giants need takeaways to win.

Week 14 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why New York Giants Will Win

It’s possible to run on the Eagle defense, and the Giants have to do it from the start.

It’s easy to get away from the ground attack when the Philly offense is cranking up yards and points in bunches, but New York will do whatever it can to control the clock and keep Jalen Hurts off the field.

Everything works when the rushing attack clicks, going 4-0 when coming up with 170 rushing yards or more. The Eagle defense was able to hold up against Derrick Henry, Dalvin Cook, and the Packer rotation, but the Giants have the ability to control the game if the O line can take over right away.

What’s Going To Happen

The Giants are going to make this interesting – at the very least.

The defense will hold up on third downs, and the offense will be just balanced enough to keep things moving, but the Eagle running game will eventually take over. The turnovers won’t be there to help the Giant cause.

It’s going to take at least 24 to hang with this Philadelphia offense, and New York won’t get there.

Why New York Giants Will Win

What did the Giants do wrong the first time around in the 23-16 loss in Week 3?

It was fine, and it could pull it off this time around if the running game keeps working.

The Dallas defense might be the best in the league in points allowed – it just stuffed the high-powered Minnesota attack in a 40-3 win last week – but it can be run on.

Chicago was able to crank up 240 yards on the ground, Green Bay barreled for 207, and the Giants came up with a solid 167. It wasn’t enough, and now it’s time to double down harder on the ground game.

New York is 4-0 when running for over 190 yards and 6-1 when running for over 100. The Dallas game was the outlier, but …

Week 12 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Dallas Cowboys Will Win

The defense has kicked it in.

The takeaways are there with eight in the last four games, the offense found something with Tony Pollard becoming the all-around explosive element for the attack, Dak Prescott is looking very, very comfortable.

Yeah, New York will come up with its rushing yards, but it’s not getting the passing game cranked up. As it it’s having a hard enough time getting everything moving through the air, and it’s not going to work this week against the No. 1 pass D in the league.

But …

CFN Week 13 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Everyone will be looking for the Dallas team that showed up in Minneapolis, but it’ll be New York that takes control right away.

After last week’s rough loss to Detroit, the New York offense will be far more careful with the ball, it’ll get back to grinding it out and not trying to wing it around, and the run defense will be far, far nastier.

It still won’t be enough.

Dallas will start fast, stall for a while, and then pick it up late to make the Thanksgiving crowd very, very happy.
