The FSU quarterback might not be throwing it all over the yard, but he’s running well, and the ground attack overall hasn’t been bad. It’s averaging close to five yards per carry, and it was rolling over the previous few weeks before stalling against the Pitt defensive front.

If Travis could get the O going, this would be the week against the horrible NC State pass defense that got ripped apart by Miami’s D’Eriq King last week and hasn’t done much of anything over the last month.

NC State has the ACC’s worst defense – allowing 472 yards per game – but …

Why NC State Will Win

Florida State doesn’t have the ability to take advantage of the easier D to go against.

The Noles don’t have any sort of a downfield passing game, they have the least efficient air attack in the ACC, and it’s all hamstrung by a team that’s getting destroyed by penalties in game after game, sinning an ACC-high 9.7 times per game.

Yes, the Wolfpack defense has been a disaster, but overall the team has been able to get by the okay-to-bad teams, and couldn’t beat Virginia Tech or North Carolina on the road or Miami last week at home.

Florida State is an okay-to-bad team.

What’s Going To Happen

So how’s your week going?

Florida State lost its star DT Marvin Wilson for the year, QB James Blackman is opting out, OT Devontay Love-Taylor is done for the season, and top WR Tamorrion Terry is no longer with the team.

NC State doesn’t do anything particularly well, but it’s finding ways to win games. The Wolfpack defense will keep Florida State in the game, but the offense will be just methodical enough to get through with the win on a good day through the air.

NC State will take advantage of its opportunities. FSU won’t.

Why Miami Will Win

Can the NC State defense show up?

The pass defense has had a rough time all season long, and a few weeks ago, the D got ripped apart by the North Carolina running game. The Tar Heels joined Virginia Tech in the 300-yard rushing club against the Wolfpack, and now it’s up to Miami to get grinding again.

The Hurricanes have been winning – the only loss is to Clemson – but the offense hasn’t been smooth. They weren’t able to do much against the fantastic Pitt run D, and they couldn’t get going against Virginia. This week, the gameplan will be to run early, run often, and get D’Eriq King on the move.

Why NC State Will Win

NC State is throwing well enough to provide a push.

The Hurricanes have only played a few good downfield passing games, and they went off. The secondary is allowing 240 yards per game, has allowed two touchdowns or more in three games, and other than the three picks against Florida State, there’s only been one interception in the last five games.

Offensively, it’s mostly because King is trying to make something happen, but Miami gives up a ton of tackles for loss and too many sacks. NC State has enough of a pass rush to be a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

This is actually one of the better indicators for Miami. It won’t four games against overmatched/okay teams, and NC State is back at home after playing four road games in five weeks before getting time off.

Miami won’t get too quirky here. It’ll run and keep running, and King will be enough to stay ahead in a surprisingly tough fight.

Why NC State Will Win

(In whisper voice) Shhhhhhhhh. We’re not supposed to say anything but warm fuzzy glowing things about North Carolina, but as the loss to Florida State showed … the team is just okay.

I know, I know, this goes completely against the fawning narrative over the Tar Heels – and Mack Brown really is doing a great job at cranking up the talent level – but they’re not forcing any takeaways, they’re not getting into the backfield enough, and for all the offensive fun, they’re not making things all that easy on themselves.

NC State’s offense has been wildly inconsistent, but the special teams are fine, the pass rush has been fantastic, and outside of the issues against a Virginia Tech team that’s ripping up everyone on the ground, the run D has been terrific.

Why North Carolina Will Win

NC State starting quarterback Devin Leary is out for at least a month with a broken leg.

He hasn’t been perfect, but he’s been able to move the offense and he’s 3-0 over his last three games as the caretaker of the attack.

Okay, okay, so North Carolina is really talented and really good – maybe just not top-five good – with Sam Howell and the passing game able to get hot and light up just about anyone. There might have been too many late dropped passes against FSU, but the offense roared back late and lost pulled it off.

The offense can score in bunches, the downfield attack has been dangerous, and the passing game should be able to bomb away on an NC State secondary that got hit for well over ten yards per pass in the loss to Virginia Tech and the close call win over Pitt.

What’s Going To Happen

NC State won three straight in the series before getting rolled 41-10 last year. It’s not going to get destroyed without Leary at the helm, but it won’t have the offensive punch to keep up.

Howell and the North Carolina passing game will get up early, and despite a mid-game lull that allows the Wolfpack back in the battle, there won’t be a ton of drama.

Why Duke Will Win

For the love of Krzyzewski, stop turning the ball over and everything will be fine.

The pass rush has been terrific, the passing game is uneven but it puts up yards, and the scoring is there, but a nation-high 19 turnovers and a -11 turnover margin screw up everything else.

It’s a bit of a reach to suggest that the record would be night-and-day without the mistakes – besides the turnovers, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play? – but Duke would probably be 3-2 right now if it wasn’t so quick to give it up.

Fortunately, NC State doesn’t take away the ball in bunches. If has five takeaways so far, and it generates pressure, but if Duke can just settle down and not force things, it has a shot to pull this off.

Why NC State Will Win

Turnovers.

Yeah, they’re a thing with Duke, and they don’t appear to be stopping. It managed to beat Syracuse last week despite the four give-ups because the Orange offensive line is really, really bad at blocking, but NC State doesn’t need any extra help.

Very, very quietly, the Wolfpack have been good enough. The secondary will give up yards and every game is a fight, but Devin Leary has settled in at quarterback, the rushing attack is good enough, and the team seems to have figured out how to win.

What’s Going To Happen

It took a really, really, really bad game from Syracuse for Duke to win last week. There’s enough talent in place to be better than it has been, but NC State is playing well despite all the flaws.

Best of all, now NC State is back at home after surviving a three-game road trip going 2-1. It’ll be another shootout fr the Wolfpack, and Duke will have its chances, but three turnovers will be the difference.
